Heart disease refers to a group of conditions that directly affect the heart muscle, or the surrounding arteries, which supply the heart with blood. Multiple types of heart disease can occur together, and having one can increase your risk for developing another.

An arrhythmia is when there are irregularities with your heart rate or rhythm. Your heart rate is controlled by the sinus node a group of cells located on top of your heart that send electrical signals to keep the heart beating properly.

Usually, a normal resting heart rate is around 60 bpm to 100 bpm. If it's consistently higher or lower, it may indicate that your heart's electrical system is malfunctioning.

These are the two main types of arrhythmias:

Coronary heart disease, also known as ischemic heart disease, is when your coronary arteries become damaged over time. It is the most common type of heart disease, and according to the CDC, it led to more than 365,000 deaths in 2017.

Usually, the coronary arteries bring blood to your heart, providing it with oxygen and vital nutrients. But coronary heart disease occurs when cholesterol builds up and narrows these arteries a process called atherosclerosis and blocks blood flow to the heart.

A heart attack, or myocardial infarction, occurs when blood flow to the heart is interrupted, damaging the heart muscle. According to the CDC, someone has a heart attack every 40 seconds in the US.

However, about 20% of heart attacks don't have any clear symptoms this is called a silent heart attack and may go entirely unnoticed.

Congenital heart disease is when you are born with a heart defect. While there are many different types, it is mainly the result of poor heart valve or blood vessel development while in the womb.

According to the CDC, about 1.4 million US adults and 1 million children are living with congenital heart disease. While people with congenital heart disease don't always show symptoms, doctors look for signs like a heart murmur, or abnormal blood flow through the heart for a diagnosis.

Heart failure, or congestive heart failure, is when your heart function deteriorates over time and no longer pumps blood efficiently. It often occurs in people with coronary heart disease who have ignored treatment for years.

However, heart failure does not mean that your heart has stopped beating. According to the CDC, about 6.5 million US adults live with the condition.

Most of the time, heart disease develops without any obvious symptoms. That's why it's important to visit your doctor for routine check-ups, as they'd be able to determine whether you might be at risk.

In fact, the signs of a heart attack are sometimes the only symptoms of heart disease. But some people may feel less oppressive chest pain at other times. This is called angina, and it often occurs after physical exertion, getting worse over time as your heart disease develops.

But it can be difficult to know if your chest pains are serious and symptomatic of heart disease. For example, indigestion or heartburn, as well as anxiety, can produce chest pain that may be mistaken for angina or a heart attack.

Researchers and psychologists have been saying that getting into nature every day is a great way to boost your mood, and that includes a nice walk on the beach. A new study from researchers at the Barcelona Institute for Global Health has found that even a short walk on the beach can benefit your overall mental health and fight depression, Metro reported.

It has been previously reported that these so-called blue spaces are sometimes the key to a higher quality of life, noting that many people who live near a coast are actually happier. So, it comes as no surprise that taking a long walk on the beach is more than just a dating profile clich, its actually a good way to maintain a healthy lifestyle.

According to Metro, the researchers studied 60 people before, during, and after spending 20 minutes a day in different environments. The study itself ran over the course of three weeks, with participants spending time walking on the beach during the first week, walking on city streets during the second, and resting indoors during the third.

The researchers measured participants blood pressure and heart rate alongside a series of questions about their overall mood. Walks on the beach didnt yield major heart benefits, but the participants did note that they had a better mood overall, according to Metro.

The team also noted that their study was a fairly small, contained sample that would warrant further study. Our results show that the psychological benefits of physical activity vary according to the type of environment where it is carried out, and that blue spaces are better than urban spaces in this regard, said research coordinator Dr. Mark Nieuwenhuijsen in a statement to Metro. Specifically, after taking a short walk on the beach in Barcelona, participants reported improvements in their mood, vitality and mental health.

According to Metro, about 55 percent of the worlds population now live in cities, so the benefits of blue spaces might be integral to overall well being of people across the globe.

When I pull into the MERA Owsley Canyon parking lot, there is a single car, so physical distancing isnt a problem. I check my watch, consider my trail options, then kick into a slow, easy pace. Ive been running at MERA for five or six years, and before that the roads around La Grande and elsewhere for more than 40 years. Running is an efficient way to stay in shape, and a path to setting and achieving goals and challenging your abilities. But running isnt for everyone. I recently read an article about the benefits of walking, and how 20-30 minutes of walking a day can improve your physical and mental well-being. So, on days when the weather isnt cooperating, or Im feeling less energetic, a walk around town is a viable alternative. In either case, run or walk, physical exercise of some sort can give you a daily focus that contributes to an overall healthy lifestyle.

Healthy lifestyle habits can slow or even reverse the damage from high cholesterol or high blood sugar, says lifestyle medicine specialist Mladen Golubic, MD, PhD. You can reverse diabetes, obesity, hypertension, high cholesterol and heart disease.

Here, he sifts through the noise to help you choose the best lifestyle habits to prevent chronic diseases.

The leading causes of death worldwide are chronic diseases, Dr. Golubic says. And they include the usual suspects:

But you can prevent many of these chronic conditions by addressing their root cause: daily habits. About 80% of chronic diseases are driven by lifestyle factors such as diet and exercise, he says.

To prevent chronic disease, Dr. Golubic recommends adjusting your habits in these five areas:

His advice is straightforward: Eat plants that are whole, unrefined and minimally processed. Eating plant-based foods helps reduce diabetes, heart disease and cancer risk.

There is evidence that the Mediterranean diet can reduce the risk of developing cardiovascular disease and other chronic diseases. This diet is rich in vegetables, fruits, legumes, whole grains fish, olive oil and nuts.

Other evidence suggests that consuming a fully plant-based diet can even reverse chronic, diet-related conditions, including advanced heart disease. This diet eliminates meat, dairy and eggs and includes whole foods such as vegetables, whole grains, legumes and fruits. It is the most compassionate and the most sustainable diet, Dr. Golubic says, and the one he recommends most.

I suggest you experiment. You dont have to go fully vegan tomorrow, he says.

Avoid refined and processed plant foods. Start by preparing one new plant-based meal a week.

Moving helps all your bodys systems. Experts recommend 150 minutes of moderate-intensity activity each week.

If that seems daunting, Dr. Golubic recommends starting small. Most of us can walk. So start with a 10-minute walk. Repeat this two or three times a day, he says. Then try to walk faster, have a minute of more intense walking or climb a flight of stairs. If walking is not an option, any physical activity will do. Simply move more and sit less.

Shoot for seven to nine hours of restful sleep each night. But if you just cant help burning the midnight oil, try to:

Chronic stress is not your immune systems friend. Try mindfulness, meditation and gratitude to relieve stress and improve your physical and mental health.

We tend to self-medicate with food, but there are healthier ways to relieve our stress, worries and concerns, Dr. Golubic says.

Mindfulness: Mindfulness is the state of being more present and aware of what you sense, feel and experience. Its a great way to cope with stress and relax.

Dr. Golubic suggests two ways to master mindfulness:

Meditation: If youre new to the practice, 44 breathing, or box breathing, is a great place to start. Heres how it works:

Do this for five minutes three times a week, building up to 20 minutes a day.

Gratitude: Practicing gratitude is a good antidote for stress as well. In studies, burned-out healthcare workers who performed acts of gratitude such as remembering three good things or writing gratitude letters reported positive effects on their well-being after a few weeks.

Throughout our days we tend to notice more things that are not going well and pay little attention to positive moments, Dr. Golubic says. We are likely to feel better when, in the midst of a hectic day, we recognize and remind ourselves about all the gifts we have in life.

Social connectedness, or loving people, keeps you emotionally and physically healthy. Even when physical distancing is the norm, virtual connections can be transformative.

We have tremendous access to technology to help us avoid social isolation, Dr. Golubic says. Almost everybody has a cell phone, so you can be in touch with people and tell them how you feel about them. Even work emails signed, I hope youre OK, or, stay well, make a difference.

Summer is the best in the Midwest. Farmers markets are popping up all over the area with locally grown goodness. The summer is the perfect time to try new things, especially new produce! As a registered dietitian nutritionist, I often dabble in the culinary arts. I love to try new recipes using produce grown in our family garden (on my father-in-law's farm land). He and I are pictured with our corn crop on July 4th.

Corn and peppers provide good sources of fiber. Fiber is helpful for lowering cholesterol and maintaining a healthy digestive tract. Tomatoes and peppers also pack in the vitamin C, an important antioxidant. Tomatoes also are excellent sources of potassium, vitamin C, vitamin A, vitamin K and manganese.

Here is a great option for fresh corn, tomatoes and peppers. Feel free to add any ingredients such as chopped green pepper to this mixture. It is great as a side dish for grilled chicken, tacos or as a salad topper. This year, I tried growing a few new things. Spinach was one that I had never grown, but knew I loved. Spinach is rich in many nutrients iron, folate, vitamin C. It has many uses such as sauting and adding to pasta dishes, in my favorite minestrone soup, and for salads. Salads can be boring and are often deemed 'rabbit food' (believe me the rabbits and deer do like my lettuce and spinach). Salads can be made into delicious culinary creations by simply mixing your favorite foods. When I have a salad, it better be fancy! In touring our garden, there are many things that would be delicious additions, including raspberries.

Fun fact: Did you know that raspberries contain 9 grams of fiber per cup? Amazingly, that is over 1/3 of your average daily requirement of 25-25 grams. Not only are they packed with fiber, the also contain valuable antioxidants such as vitamin C and phytochemicals such as quercetin and gallic acid which have been shown to be beneficial for heart health.

Other vegetables to add to a mix of spinach, lettuce and raspberries would be red onions, peppers, cabbage, broccoli, celery or roasted beets. Others include strawberries (in the summer), apples and pears (in the fall), are also amazing in a fancy salad! Aim for a rainbow of color. Other additions include: nuts, seeds, lean proteins such as chicken, fish, steak, beans or legumes, eggs, and even cooked whole grains including barley, quinoa or wild rice. Instead of a cream-based dressing, try a vinaigrette. Olive oil, a mono-unsaturated fat or the most heart healthy fat, is the perfect oil to use when making salad dressings.

Get out to the garden, the farm or the farmers market. Try new things! Fill half your plate with fruits and vegetables. This ensures low calorie, high volume, high nutrient foods help keep you satisfied and prevent disease.

Adrienne Bailon appeared on The Masked Singer as the flamingo in December 2019, and the Hollywood star revealed that preparing for the reality show "helped [her] with [her] fitness goals." So much so, Bailon would sing on the elliptical "every single day, every morning" for "45 minutes" to "get [her] stamina up."

"You've got to be able to sing these songs, dance the choreography, and not sound winded the entire time," Bailon said on her YouTube channel, All Things Adrienne, in December 2019. "I literally would do 45 minutes of elliptical in the morning, then I would go to dance rehearsal, and then I would do another 45 minutes of elliptical in the evening."

On her "off" days, Bailon would use the app, 8fit, to keep getting stronger. "It's an app that allows you to do workouts from home, and I am obsessed," she stated. "Me and [her husband] Israel [Houghton] would do two of these a day. I would knock this out and fell literally amazing. It was something easy for me to accomplish." However, Bailon noted that "you are not going to see results right away," but it's important to "focus on the goal of being healthy, and the results will come."

‘The Future of Medicine’: Local Partnership Enhances Muncie as One of The State’s Leading Medical Hubs – Muncie Journal

MUNCIE, IN According to Robert Wood Johnson Foundation, Delaware County has the fourth-highest number of primary care physicians per capita in the statea ranking that should mean the county is one of the healthiest. But its not.

Of Indianas 92 counties, Delaware County ranks 85th. So wheres the disconnect?

Even with Indianas fourth-highest primary care physicians per capita, the county has just one primary care physician per 1,030 patients. In fact, the United States as a whole is facing a shortage in physicians. So in an effort to boost local physician training programs and retention, a number of healthcare entities in Muncie have partnered to form a long-term initiative, with funding from Ball Brothers Foundation, called Optimus Primary.

Optimus Primary is about taking all of the best pieces that we have in healthcare assets in Muncie and assembling them together in a way to improve the health outcomes of our community, said Derron Bishop, associate dean and director of Indiana University School of MedicineMuncie.

Bishop was a founding member of Optimus Primary, which officially formed in 2016. He worked with Jud Fisher, president and chief operating officer of Ball Brothers Foundation, and Dr. Jeff Bird, president of the IU Health East Central Region, to bring the program to fruition.

The key to Optimus Primary, Bishop says, is the number of anchor institutions located in Muncie: IU Health Ball Memorial Hospital, IU School of MedicineMuncie, Ball State University, Meridian Health Services and more.

Were all basically co-located together, and thats extraordinarily powerful. Communities all across the country would love to have this, Bishop said.

By connecting each of these healthcare organizations in a strategic partnership, Optimus Primary positions Muncie as one of the leading physician training centers in the state.

Muncie is the only place outside of Indianapolis that you could take someone from high school, into college, into medical school, into residency, and ultimately become a board-certified position in multiple areasand youd never have to leave Muncie, Bishop said.

But the effects of Optimus Primary extend beyond training physicians. Theres a huge economic benefit too, Bishop said. He explained that every physician who establishes a practice generates, on average, six to seven jobs and approximately $300,000 in regional tax revenue.

On a larger scale, Optimus Primary initiatives have powerful potential to strengthen the broader pipeline of medical professionals being trained in Indiana, to make a significant economic development impact and to improve population health in East Central Indiana, Ball Brothers Foundations Jud Fisher said. To date, the foundation has committed $1.8 million to Optimus Primary efforts.

With Ball Brothers Foundation backing the initiative, Bishop said the partner organizations have been able to explore innovative solutions to affect positive change to Muncies medical landscape and health outcomes.

The way that Ball Brothers Foundation does their funding is that they give you a chance to try something, Bishop said. They really allowed all the different groups in Optimus Primary to innovate together with a common goal.

One of these innovative ideas was to partner with Muncie Threat Assessment Center in a Law Enforcement Operations 101 course for medical students. The course was designed to help the medical students bond and improve their communication skills.

A good team-building activity has to be fun, it has to be something theyve never experienced, and also it needs to be something where they make really difficult decisions together under stress, Bishop said. So we said, Whats the most difficult decision to make under stress? And what we came up with was probably when a law enforcement officer has to pull the trigger.

In Law Enforcement Operations 101, medical students learn firearm safety and how to shoot a gun (all guns in the course used non-lethal rounds). They even learn how to conduct traffic stops, how to negotiate domestic disputes and how to clear housesand theyre put to the test through life-like run-throughs of each scenario.

The innovative idea was a bit of a risk, as Bishop said he didnt exactly know if it would work as he had hoped. But in the end, it was a successsome of Bishops students told him they had bonded more in the three hours of the course than they had in the past three months of school.

Bilal Jawed, a former IU School of MedicineMuncie student, was one of the first students to participate in the course.

On the surface, it seems like shooting firearms and clearing houses is not a very applicable experience for medical professionals, but I would definitely argue against that, Jawed said. I learned a lot about working as a team in high-pressure situations and also how to communicate effectively and efficiently when time is of the essence. It was also very informative to actually interact with law enforcement officers, because medical professionals often work indirectly with them.

Jawed was part of several other Optimus Primary programs too, like a full-body assessment at Ball State Universitys Clinical Exercise Physiology Program.

Jawed and his classmates were put on treadmills and hooked up to machines to measure their own strength, pulmonary function, muscle composition, bone density and more.

It was neatalso very scaryto have the performance of my own body plotted on a graph and compared against averages, he said. Im seeing a lot of little ways and reasons to integrate these practices into care of future patients. Its all about the little interactions youre exposed to, and weve honestly been exposed to so many special, cutting-edge experiences.

And thats exactly the purpose of Optimus Primary: to train future physicians to think differently about medicine.

If we can get our physicians that we train to understand the benefits of exercise, theyre more likely to advocate for this for their patients, Bishop said. We want them to directly see the benefits of lifestyle modifications, because this is a way that we can fundamentally change the way we do medicineto really infuse that idea of lifestyle.

No program embodies this emphasis on lifestyle better than the Healthy Lifestyle Center, a student-run clinic formed in partnership between Ball State University, IU School of Medicine Muncie and Meridian Health Services. The HLC has two clinic locationsone in the new College of Health building at Ball State University and another on Meridian Health Services Tillotson Avenue campus. Jawed describes the HLC as the future of medicine.

Right now, in medicine in general, our system is a very reactive system, where people come in with illnesses, get those illnesses resolved, and then move on, he said. What the HLC is doing is very unique. Were actually dealing with issues proactivelyaddressing illnesses before they even become illnessesand thats how its going to be in the future.

HLC is a free resource to the community, offering a range of services from dietetics, to audiology, to diabetes management and more. Students and professionals from various majors and fields come together to prepare comprehensive health and wellness plans for each patient, creating an inter-professional setup that is very rare.

Medicine really is a team sport, and Im learning how to be a team member by being in these roles, Jawed said. Its really incredible to be able to work alongside all these different professions to actually help the community at such an early phase in my medical education.

Bishop said Muncie has the best available infrastructure to help patients change their lifestyle and improve their health. By leveraging the communitys existing assets, Optimus Primary is changing the way physicians in Delaware County will provide care, ultimately improving overall health outcomes for the region.

And, just four years after first taking shape, the strategic initiative seems t
o be working.

Theres such a diverse group of experiences with Optimus Primary, both from the health providing side and from the health receiving, Jawed said. Its been nice to plant little seeds on how Im going to incorporate these lessons in my future practice.

Some of these other diverse programs supported through Optimus Primary include:

Ivy Tech Community Colleges newly renovated School of Nursing and School of Health Sciences in downtown Muncie with state-of-the-art simulation spaces that mirror the setup of operating and patient rooms at IU Health Ball Memorial Hospital. The new spaces allow for expanded program capacity and can be used as actual healthcare delivery rooms in the event of a major disaster.

IU Health Ball Memorial Hospitals partnership with Ivy Tech to match nursing students with mentor nurses for more hands-on patient care and customized learning in a groundbreaking program that re-imagines nursing rotations.

IU School of MedicineMuncies development of a new scholarly-concentration in community health promotion and disease prevention to recruit students to Muncie who are specifically interested in improving patient health through lifestyle modification and healthy behaviors.

IU School of MedicineMuncies new Bachelors to MD program, which launched in fall 2019, to allow eight Ball State University pre-med students per year to also be granted simultaneous, provisional admissions to the IU School of MedicineMuncie, working to attract high school students to commit to local universities and to encourage them to stay in the surrounding community to practice medicine when they graduate.

Maplewood Mansion Learning Laboratory, which provides short-term accommodations for IU School of MedicineMuncie students in one of the Ball mansions along Minnetrista Boulevard. A recent publication stated that it may be the finest medical student housing anywhere in the United States. Under the direction of Ball State University Professor Chris Flook, a team of BSU telecommunications students recently produced a video on Optimus Primary, showcasing Maplewood Mansion and some of the other unique aspects of IU School of MedicineMuncie.

As Optimus Primary turns toward its next phase of operations and funding, Bishop said theyre looking to get the community involved more. One way they plan to do this is through standardized patients, which are community volunteer actors. Each actor is given an extensive backstory and symptoms to exhibit, and then they are placed in a mock clinical setting with medical students.

What happens in this is we have community members helping to train future healthcare workers in the community and they become better patients in the process, because theyre learning whats supposed to happen, Bishop said.

Bishop also said, now that Optimus Primary has a few programs under its belt, the next phase of the partnership is to begin quantifying data and, hopefully, spread the momentum to other communities.

Were looking now at how we can quantify the work that were doing and then we can begin seeking additional funding sources from outside entities, he said. Ball Brothers Foundation gave us the base to do this next level, which is going to be the large community-based research where we can say whether something is working. If we find out something is working, we can take it and we can export it to other communities.

In all, Bishop is confident about where Optimus Primary is headed.

The future is very bright, he said. I have dedicated our regional medical campus to doing this. This is our future.

Not all debt is adverse debt, but consumer debt for car loans, student loans, credit cards and other personal spending is categorically bad. The best way to free yourself of debt is to avoid it completely, but of course, thats not always an option.

Starting as early as possible, make a clear plan for getting out of debt and stick to it, even if it means delaying or reducing some of your savings or investments for retirement.

Being happy in retirement is undoubtably tied to being healthy in retirement. But a healthy lifestyle is something that must begin years before you retire.

Dr Deepthi Ayanavelli, Consultant Nephrologist, ESIC Hospital, Hyderabad shares insights on the alarming state of affairs for people suffering from Chronic Kidney Diseases (CKDs) and highlights the need of considering lifestyle changes and adopting alternative and convenient ways of carrying out therapies

The COVID-19 pandemic outbreak has triggered many challenges and a slew of steps have been taken to contain the spread of the virus in the country, including a nation-wide lockdown. More than a lakh of the Indian population has been tested COVID-19-positive and over 3,000 people have died since January 2020.

According to the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare (MoHF&W), people having co-morbidities like Chronic Kidney Disease (CKD), who are on dialysis, are at an increased risk of contracting the deadly virus. India has approximately 4,950 dialysis centres that are now facing a staff crunch as the country is battling the outbreak of the deadly virus. There are 0.2 million kidney disease patients who get added in India and require 34 million dialysis sessions in total every year and the current situation has made things challenging for them. The alarming state of affairs highlight the need of considering lifestyle changes and adopting alternative and convenient ways of carrying out therapies, such as home-based dialysis or Peritoneal Dialysis (PD).

Understanding the benefits of Peritoneal Dialysis (PD)

PD is a painless therapy as it does not require vascular access or needling, and close medical supervision, but offers greater flexibility and freedom in the treatment schedule as it can be carried remotely, does not put pressure on the heart, involves minimum complications and fewer dietary restrictions. It is a cost-effective therapy, especially for people in rural areas who usually have to travel long distances for the therapy. This will enable them to lead a better quality of life. It is also suitable for young children below five years as it makes their lifestyle flexible. These factors make PD a preferred choice of treatment therapy as it allows patients to use it from home thereby restraining their visits to the dialysis centre.

Lifestyle hacks to keep your kidneys healthy during COVID-19

It is rightly said that an ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure. When suffering from CKD, patients can slow the progress of the disease by making some healthy lifestyle choices listed below:

Obesity and kidney health: Being overweight is directly linked to kidney disease. Kidney problems are more likely to develop in people with obesity, including those with hypertension and diabetes. It is imperative to consume fewer calories and maintain a healthy weight. One should eat healthy not only to avoid obesity, but also to ensure that they get adequate nutrients for proper functioning of the organs. Patients should create an exercise regime and a diet planner.

Stay in touch with the doctor through telemedicine: During COVID-19, it is advisable for kidney patients to stay in constant touch with their doctors virtually. One should take all appropriate measures to keep their blood pressure and sugar levels in control, as people with kidney diseases are more susceptible to CKD.

Avoid over-the-counter medications: One should avoid over-the-counter painkillers for any pain or joint swelling without doctors prescription. If taken too often and regularly, these medicines can cause damage to the kidneys.

Maintain safe distances: One should always follow the social distancing norms, along with the proper usage of masks. At home or in public, proper coughing etiquettes should be followed.

Basic COVID-19 precautions and hygiene should be duly followed: Before carrying PD, wash hands with soap or use an alcohol-based sanitiser. Do not visit the doctor or go out to get medicines. Alternate arrangements like a video/audio call or getting a home delivery of medicines should be considered.

Avoid drinking and smoking: To remain healthy in times of crisis, one should avoid smoking or drinking as these can increase the chance of high blood pressure, which is a leading cause of kidney failure.

Dialysis demand in India is growing at a rate of 31 per cent, compared to six per cent in the United States and eight per cent in the rest of the world. Even though most of the CKD patients start dialysis, financial crunch compels about two-third of them to withdraw and succumb to death. Dialysis costs Rs three to four lakhs annually. Patients visit dialysis centre thrice a week and cover long distances that leads to heavy costs for them. PD does not require a close medical supervision, making it a viable and feasible alternative to manage dialysis staying indoors during the pandemic.

Virtual VeloSano: Local mom with stage 4 metastatic breast cancer defying odds and cycling on – WKYC.com

Virtual VeloSano participant knows firsthand the importance of funding research, and finding a cure

CLEVELAND Since beginning in 2014, the VeloSano Bike to Cure has raised more than $21 million for research, trials, and cancer treatment, here at the Cleveland Clinic. Now, the pandemic may have forced VeloSano to go virtual in 2020, but make no mistake, its not stopping the army of participants committed to the cause.

Among them is Kate Watson, a busy mom, leading an active healthy lifestyle with two beautiful little girls and a loving husband. But in 2016 she got news no woman wants to hear.

I was diagnosed with metastatic or stage 4 breast cancer. I was 35 years old with no family history. Two young kids at home. It came out of left field, Kate said as we talked to her via Zoom.

By the time she was diagnosed, the disease had already metastasized, spreading to several other places on her body including lymph nodes in her chest, her spine, pelvis, and the bone in one leg. Doctors determined Kate was not a candidate for surgery. Rather, they took the approach of attacking the cancer with targeted chemotherapy.

The average life span for someone diagnosed with stage 4 metastatic breast cancer is just three years. Kates treatment results have been amazing.

Currently there is no evidence of active disease, which is not the norm for somebody with this diagnosis. This week will actually be my 75th chemo infusion. I will be in treatment for the rest of my life because there is no cure for metastatic breast cancer, Kate shared.

When Kate beat the average life expectancy, she decided it was time to give back to the people she really credits with helping her.

Last year was our first ride with VeloSano. My husband and I both signed up for the 10-mile and it was so much fun and just so uplifting. It just felt so good giving back to the people who gave it to me, she shared.

Crossing the finish line of last years VeloSano is something Kate compares to finishing chemotherapy. Shes taking back some of the power cancer can have over your life. Her doctors and cheer team at the Cleveland Clinic by her side, throughout this journey.

I just looked at them and saw their optimism and their determination and their hope. That I could lead a full life. And thats why today, I want to support them because I want anybody to know thats facing a cancer diagnosis, that there is hope, she said.

On Saturday, Kate will be joined by her family, friends, and neighbors in Rocky River. Each lap around their street is a mile. The Beaconsfield Bikers will be doing 20 laps to make up a 10-mile ride. And its important to point out that you dont have to bike this year. The Virtual VeloSano allows folks to participate in any number of ways including walking, running, hiking, riding a scooter, however you like.
