5 Amazing Health Benefits of Pumpkin – MSN Money

Bohemian Nomad Picturemakers - Getty Images Whether it's canned or fresh, pumpkin has many health benefits. It can help your vision, prevent cancer, support immunity, and more.

You can do lots more with pumpkin than serve it up as a Thanksgiving dessert or carve it for Halloween! If youve been overlooking this superfood, now is the time to add pumpkin to your diet (did you know pumpkin is a fruit?). For starters, its packed with antioxidants that support immune function, good vision, and heart health. It may even protect against cancer. Pumpkin packs a lot of nutritional power, says Amy Kimberlain, RDN, spokesperson for the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics. Its also incredibly versatile and can be added to many different dishes.

Heres how to get the most from its health benefits:

Its an incredibly nutritious food that supplies you with high levels of vitamins and minerals such as vitamins A, C, and E, says Kimberlain. Adding pumpkin to your diet gives you nutritional benefits with no fat, 2 grams of protein, and 3 grams of fiber. And one cup of cooked pumpkin has only 49 calories.

Pumpkin provides 245 percent of your daily recommended intake of vitamin A, which helps your body fight off infections, says Kimberlain. It also boasts 19 percent of your daily needs for vitamin C, which helps immune cells work more efficiently and wounds heal faster.

Pumpkin also contains high levels of beta carotene, which gives this winter squash its beautiful bright orange color. In a National Eye Institute clinical trial, high doses of vitamins C, E, and beta carotene reduced the risk of progression of age-related macular degeneration. Although they didnt study pumpkin specifically, pumpkin contains all these nutrients so it makes sense to add it to your diet, says Kimberlain.

Pumpkin has high levels of potassium. One study showed that a reduction in sodium and an increase in potassium helped lower blood pressure to potentially reduce stroke risk. Also, the antioxidants in pumpkin such as vitamin C, E, and lutein may reduce inflammation linked to heart disease.

Preliminary research shows that antioxidants such as betacarotene found in high levels in pumpkin may protect against certain kinds of cancer such as lung or prostate cancer. One study also showed the protective effects of carotenoids such as beta carotene against colon cancer.

We're not talking about a pumpkin spice latte. Its totally fine to indulge in a piece of pumpkin pie or cake occasionally because all foods fit into a healthy lifestyle, says Kimberlain. But you dont have to save pumpkin for dessert! Incorporate pumpkin into meals with these healthy pumpkin recipes:

It doesnt really matter! Use whatever is easier for you. Keeping a can in the pantry makes it convenient to stir into dishes without having to plan ahead, says Kimberlain. Make sure you buy canned pumpkin and not pumpkin pie mix, which contains added sugars and is meant for baking. If youre feeling ambitious, pumpkins arent that difficult to grow in your garden.

If you do want to use fresh pumpkin, its super-easy to roast! Look for sugar pumpkins, which are smaller and sweeter than carving pumpkins. Wash, then cut in half or into large strips, and remove the pulp (save the seeds to roast separately!). Place pieces in a jelly roll pan, drizzle with your oil of choice, and roast at 400 degrees for 20 to 25 minutes. When you can poke a fork in easily, its done. Let cool, then scoop out the soft pumpkin with a spoon. Pumpkin also freezes well.

The pumpkin seeds, which also contain antioxidants, are just as yummy! Rinse well, spread on a jelly roll pan, drizzle with olive oil, and bake at 325 degrees for about 30 minutes. Top with seasonings of your choice such as garlic powder or cayenne pepper. Or saut them in a pan on low heat until dry and crispy. Eat whole!

Moreover, White Castle, an American hamburger restaurant chain, offers burgers with plant-based meat patties from Impossible Foods, a U.S. based company that develops plant-based substitutes for meat products. A strong inclination by fast-food giants towards investment in this industry is being observed. For example, KFC, an American fast-food restaurant chain is looking into diversify their offering to include plant-based chicken alternatives, since the consumers are increasingly inclined towards consumption of plant-based protein for health and environmental reasons. The companies are also investing towards innovative food products in the vegan range, to cater to the increasing demand among consumers for wider food options. Furthermore, they are also undertaking strategic initiatives to capitalize on the growing demand. For instance, In 2018, Unilever, a multinational corporation, announced the acquisition of The Vegetarian Butcher. The move was largely directed towards expansion of its product portfolio, to include plant-based food products, which are healthier and have lower environmental impact. The increasing diversification towards product innovation is anticipated to further propel the demand for vegan food market over the forecast period.

How to live longer – the best cooking oil to protect against heart disease and early death – Express

‘Herb’ mentality in Coronavirus – Times of India

Have you seen the scramble for Giloy these past few months? Mint and basil pots have been actively replaced by Giloy in most households, a plant that's become the quintessential sanjeevani booti of the modern world. People are growing it, juicing it, powdering it -- whatever the form -- they are consuming a lot of it. While its benefits are well known, the hysteria surrounding it right now seems a bit stretched. Consuming Giloy juice can help you get rid of fever, which is one of the signs of Covid-19. Its anti-inflammatory properties can also help in tackling respiratory problems like cough, cold, and breathing problems, says Parag Kaushik, co-founder, Upakarma Ayurveda. But it is not an antidote for Covid-19, just like no amount of vitamins or kadhas are. Antiviral herbs, respiratory restoratives and expectorants are an integral part of curing fevers and bronchial issues in herbalism. But they can only be considered supportive care in Covid-19 and not the cure.No single drug remediesImmunity is the big word right now and there are no shortcuts for building that. But there isn't such a thing as 'one herb cures all'. It is usually a combination of a healthy lifestyle and the correct and therapeutic use of a combination of herbs that can protect us effectively in the present times. That said, overuse of anything, even if it is a known nectar, is equally harmful for us, says Dr Manoj Kutteri, Wellness Director at Atmantan Wellness Centre. Also, Ayurveda is a slow process and builds our inner mechanism gradually. Consumption of Ayurvedic herbs is subject to ones own body mechanism and pre-existing conditions. The effects of Ayurvedic herbs are not instant. Ayurveda works slowly and it depends upon each person on how much time will it take to show the desired results, explains Kaushik.Lets not self-medicateWHO states clearly that while some western, traditional or home remedies may provide comfort and alleviate symptoms of COVID-19, there is no evidence that current medicine can prevent or cure the disease. WHO does not recommend self-medication with any medicines, including antibiotics, as a prevention or cure for the virus. The same applies to herbal supplements. Some Ayurvedic herbs are made into teas or tonics. Others are formulated in capsules, tablets, and oral tinctures. If purchasing an Ayurvedic herb online, through an Ayurvedic practitioner, or at a specialty health food store, the general rule of thumb is to never exceed the prescribed dose. There is no guarantee you won't still get side effects, but the general assumption is that the herb is safe at the prescribed dose, at least for short-term use. In the case of Giloy for instance, in some people overuse can cause constipation and lower blood sugar levels. So if you are diabetic and have been consuming Giloy on a long-term basis, monitor your blood sugar levels regularly.

Florida governor: I won’t close gyms over virus because people there are ‘in good shape’ – The American Independent

Living a healthy lifestyle does not provide immunity from possible complications of the coronavirus, experts say.

Florida Republican Gov. Ron DeSantis said on Friday he would not close gyms in his state during the COVID-19 pandemic because people who go to gyms are "in good shape."

"If you're in good shape, you have a very, very low likelihood of ending up in significant condition as a result of the coronavirus," said DeSantis. "I don't think it would make sense to close it."

Despite DeSantis' lack of concern, many people with healthy lifestyles have suffered severe casesof COVID-19.

Experts have also noted that the virus can be spread by seemingly healthy individuals, even if they show no symptoms.

Florida was one of several states that reopened early in defiance of the advice of medical experts. It has since experienced a resurgence of the coronavirus, with over 11,400 new cases and 128 deaths reported in the last day. The state has reported over 100 new deaths a day for four days in a row.

From a July 17 press briefing:

RON DeSANTIS: In terms of the gyms, we've not had a lot of problems with that. And so, that's not something that I'm going to close. Partially because if you look, you talk to any physician, particularly the people that are under 50, if you're in good shape, you know, you have a very, very low likelihood of ending up in significant condition as a result of the coronavirus.

I mean, the people that they're seeing in there have overwhelmingly uncontrolled comorbidities, a lot of folks have hypertension, diabetes, are very morbidly obese, and so, I think, taking that option away for people to be healthy just doesn't make sense. And we haven't really seen that as a major vector.

I know it could be, theoretically, anything you do, theoretically, could do it, but I think most of the people that are going to gyms are in the low-risk groups and I think what they're doing is making them even less risk for the coronavirus.

I don't think it would make sense to close it.

Is red wine good for your heart? Yes, but only in moderation here’s how much you should drink – Insider – INSIDER

Research has found that drinking red wine in moderation can be good for your heart. However, consuming too much red wine, or any alcohol, is particularly bad for your heart, and can increase your risk for heart disease.

Here's what you should know about the heart benefits of red wine and how much of it is considered healthy.

The link between red wine and a healthy heart may be due to the high level of micronutrients, called polyphenols, found in the skin and seeds of grapes.

During the production process, red wine is fermented with the grape skins and seeds for a longer period of time than white wine, which means the polyphenols are much more concentrated. For example, a glass of red wine contains around 10 times more polyphenols than a glass of white wine.

These polyphenols especially a polyphenol called resveratrol have been shown to protect and support heart health.

The polyphenols in red wine have antioxidant properties. This means they prevent or reduce the oxidation of low-density lipoproteins (LDLs), the "bad" type of cholesterol molecules we carry in our bloodstream.

When LDLs are oxidized, they build up in the walls of our arteries and narrow them, so that less blood and oxygen can reach the heart. This can cause coronary heart disease, the most common type of heart disease, and the leading cause of death in the US.

Moderate consumption of red wine can also increase the level of high-density lipoprotein (HDL), or the "good cholesterol" in our blood, which is associated with a lower risk of cardiovascular disease. HDL cholesterol is good because it helps remove excess LDL cholesterol from the blood vessels.

For example, a small controlled study published in the journal Atherosclerosis in 2006 found that after drinking 400 ml (about two to three glasses) of red wine every day for six weeks, LDL cholesterol decreased by 8% in postmenopausal women who had high LDL levels, while HDL cholesterol increased by 17%.

Another study published in 2005 in the European Journal of Clinical Nutrition found that four weeks of moderate red wine consumption daily 300 ml for males and 200 ml for females increased levels of HDL cholesterol by a greater amount than drinking the non-alcoholic, wine-equivalent dose of red grape extract tablets with water.

Some research has found that drinking red wine may decrease platelet aggregation, which can also help reduce your risk for cardiovascular disease.

Platelets are tiny cells in our blood that bind together around damaged blood vessels when we become injured. This clotting is what stops us from bleeding and helps us heal when we get a minor cut.

However, when platelets aggregate too much, they can form blood clots. Blood clots are serious because they can block the flow of blood and oxygen to vital organs, increasing your risk of having a heart attack or stroke.

By reducing the stickiness of the platelets in your blood, red wine can help prevent blood clots and reduce your risk for health complications. For example, a 2002 study published in the International Journal of Molecular Medicine measured platelet aggregation levels in male volunteers after moderate wine consumption and found they were significantly inhibited.

In order to receive the heart health benefits of red wine, the American Heart Association (AHA) recommends no more than one drink a day for women and two a day for men. For reference, one drink is equal to five ounces, or 140ml of wine.

Drinking too much wine, or any type of alcohol in excess, is very bad for your heart, says Robert A. Kloner MD, PhD, Chief Science Officer of Huntington Medical Research Institutes in Pasadena, California and Professor of Medicine at the University of Southern California.

That's because too much alcohol can cause high blood pressure and raise levels of triglycerides, which will increase your risk of heart disease, heart attack, or stroke.

Excessive drinking can also lead to heart failure a disease which makes it harder for your heart to pump blood around your body and atrial fibrillation, which is a type of arrhythmia where the heart beats quickly and irregularly.

Read more to learn about how different levels of alcohol consumption affect the heart.

Drinking several glasses of red wine throughout the week can be part of a heart healthy lifestyle. But in general, you shouldn't drink more than one or two glasses each night.

In addition, it's important to note that there are many other foods that contain the polyphenols found in red wine which may have the same heart health benefits. For instance, you can find resveratrol in grape juice, peanuts, cocoa, blueberries, and cranberries.

You don't need to drink red wine to have a healthy heart. But, if you like drinking red wine, the good news is that it may have some heart benefits just make sure you drink in moderation.

Photos: Steph Currys Wife, Ayesha, Shows Off Huge Weight Loss – The Spun

Ayesha Curry, the wife of Golden State Warriors point guard Stephen Curry, has shown off some impressive weight loss on social media.

The wife of the NBA star is an extremely successful businesswoman. Shes made major inroads in the food industry, with restaurants and cookware, among other things.

Ayesha Curry has also been a major advocate for an overall healthy lifestyle. Shes reportedly lost 35 pounds.

I started my fitness journey because I wanted to be strong and healthy for myself and the people who depend on me. But it was important that I did it my way, which meant I needed working out to fit in my life, NOT take me away from it. I hate the term balance, because I dont think theres any formula that works for everyone, but I do believe that creating time for yourself to exercise is never time wasted. So I went to work finding ways to incorporate healthy habits into my busy schedule, and picked up a few tricks along the way (easy 10-minute workouts, fast healthy recipes, etc.) she wrote on Instagram.

Ayesha Curry recently showed off her toned physique by fitting into her engagement dress that she wore nine years ago.

Okay last one but I tried on my engagement photo shoot dress a couple months ago and it FINALLY fit again, she wrote.

Well done, Ayesha.

Make Your Fitness More Efficient with These Amazing Gadgets – TechSpective

Keeping fit is something that all of us need to do if we want to lead a healthy lifestyle, but that doesnt mean fitness is easy. Well, maybe it is for some physically inclined people but not everyone is like that.

For some people, keeping active is actually a somewhat monumental task. If youre not used to it it can be hard to work some time to exercise into your schedule, and also your body needs to acclimate to all of the exertion and post-workout pain.

This is why those of us who do need to kickstart our commitment to keeping fit shouldnt be afraid to utilize modern technology to ease that transition along. And even if you already exercise a lot, you can still enhance your experience with some fancy tech.

Lets take a look at 5 gadgets which will make your fitness regime as efficient as possible:

A weighing scale is not necessarily always an essential when it comes to fitness, but it is of course important if youre working out to lose weight. Its important to have a way to track your progress.

This gadget goes above and beyond that and is useful even for those who arent specifically working on their weight. Not only will this give you an accurate reading of that, but it has a number of other stats available too.

It will also tell you your muscle mass and your cardio age and it has Bluetooth which you can use to connect it to an app on your phone so that you can keep a record of your stats as recorded by the device.

A machine of many uses, its a quick and simple way to keep on top of various different metrics that are useful to follow as you work towards better fitness.

This gadget is very useful for the recovery period of working out. Recovery is important and a lot of people dont pay attention to it. Its natural for your muscles to be sore and tired after exercise, but its hard to know when its just fatigue and when it might cause lasting pain.

If its something really serious like a torn muscle or ligament damage, then youll probably be in agony, but sometimes muscles are just a little more under strain than normal which can make future workouts, and life in general, more difficult.

This Powerdot gadget can keep that under control. It sends electrical impulses to the affected muscles to soothe some of the aches and pains. You can apply it to any part of your body that needs it and it can be controlled from a smartphone so its very handy.

The more care you give to your muscles post workout, the better future workouts will be so this will add to your fitness a lot.

Fitbit is the go-to gadget for fitness fanatics, and the Versa is the most efficient one that you can get your hands on. While it does lack a GPS, you dont really need that when it comes to general fitness.

The Versa still does everything that you need it to do to keep your workouts and exercise regimes on track. It tracks your steps and will remind you to move if you havent done so for a while. Movement is essential even on days off, so this watch works wonders.

Its got a very accurate heart rate monitor which you can use to ensure you are putting as much into your cardio workouts as possible and it gives you a fitness score and compares it to others who are your age.

It functions as a smartwatch too so you can use it for emails, texts and other notifications and on top of all of that, it also tells you the time . . . What? Some watches dont do that these days.

This machine is kind of revolutionary. It takes an exercise that is very common and uses some modern technology to maximize the effectiveness of this particular technique and ensure youre getting the most out of it.

The machine is adjustable so that you can change the difficulty and put emphasis on different parts of your body. The great thing about pushups is that they work a variety of different muscle groups including your chest, arms and shoulders and this machine helps you optimize specific ones.

Its a particularly effective tool for working on your upper chest muscles. If you want to have a solid chest workout it would be great to combine the use of this machine with some good lower chest workouts.

Much like what I mentioned before about movement, another essential aspect of keeping your health in check, even when youre not exercising is hydration. You can use this smart bottle while working out, but its also optimized for home and office use.

In similar fashion to how the Fitbit tracks your steps, this bottle will track your hydration and it will send you reminders if you need to drink more. It can of course be connected to an app on your smartphone to simplify this process.

The bottle will auto-adjust the goals based on your personal level of activity as well as your age, gender and it also keeps track of the weather conditions and will adjust your hydration goals relative to that too.

What youll notice about all of these is that the addition of tech and gadgets to your workouts isnt about cheating to make things easier. None of these things will allow you to cheat, you still have to put in the work.

But these gadgets will unquestionably add a lot of efficiency to the workouts and will also ensure that you get the absolute best out of every exercise that your put your body through.

According to research cited by Healthline, "proteincauses the largest rise in TEF (thermic effect of food). It increases your metabolic rate by 1530%, compared to 510% for carbs and 03% for fats." As Healthline explains, the "thermic effect of food caused by the extra calories required to digest, absorb and process the nutrients in your meal."

Since digesting protein takes more effort from your body, by eating more of it you will basically work out using your metabolic system (we might be exaggerating here). Protein is also essential for muscle repair and recovery, so if you are actively working out, it is recommended to take between 1.6-2 grams of protein per body kilogram per day.

You should source protein from a variety of food stuff like lean meat, nuts, green veg and eggs. Supplementing protein is also popular among athletes: protein powder shakes are probably the most convenient way to get your protein fix on the go but you can also have protein bars or jerky as well as post workout snack.

This technique may have a very complicated-sounding name Non-Exercise Activity Thermogenesis and a vaguely annoying acronym NEAT but it's actually very simple. NEAT means adjusting how you live your day-to-day life, in order to be more active. You know when exercise experts say, 'Take the stairs, not the lift' and you think, 'Oh yes, good idea,' but then you don't do it? Well NEAT is actually doing things like that.

Like a lot of great ways to get fit, NEAT is perfectly straightforward in principle, but it does require some effort on your part. However the great thing about NEAT for many people is that it specifically does not involve going to the gym or setting aside time for exercise. Although of course, it can also be used as one component of a healthy lifestyle, alongside gym, running, cycling, watching Joe Wicks, etc.

Learn about using NEAT to speed up your metabolism

Caffeine found in coffee and teas can boost metabolism significantly. Not everyone reacts to caffeine the same way and it is also recommended not to drink too many cups of coffee/caffeinated beverages in a day. Green tea has a lower caffeine content so combining coffee and green tea consumption can have better results.

Drinking more water can also improve metabolism: combine increased water consumption with more fibrous food for the best results.

We’re only just beginning to learn how Covid-19 affects the brain – KTVZ

One of the more puzzling aspects of the novel coronavirus is just how many organ systems are impacted through the course of the disease. Weve heard about the heart, lungs and respiratory symptoms, but a growing mystery is its impact on the nervous system.

A report in April suggested more than a third of 214 Covid-19 patients studied experienced neurological complications ranging from loss of smell to stroke.

The virus can lead to neurological complications like delirium, brain inflammation, stroke and nerve damage. In a University College London study published earlier this month, 10 out of 43 patients had temporary brain dysfunction and delirium, while 12 had brain inflammation, eight had strokes and eight had nerve damage.

Another paper published last month in The Lancet Psychiatry looked at 153 patients in the UK and found even those younger than 60 could have psychosis, depression or strokes.

How this virus damages the brain and nerves still isnt totally clear. But as two physicians dedicated to the study of the nervous system, we wanted to find some answers.

Dr. Sanjay Gupta has been a practicing neurosurgeon for the last 20 years and has always been amazed at the remarkable ways the brain is protected by the body. A hard shell of bone, a bath of clear fluid and a blood brain barrier, which creates checkpoints before certain molecules are even allowed to enter. It is our most important organ and more impervious than most. And, yet this virus is still able to sneak into the central nervous system.

And Dr. Minali Nigam is a newly minted resident physician and chose to go into neurology, a field that interconnects the mind and body. Seemingly small details like the ability to raise an eyebrow can tell us what part of the nervous system is injured. Theres so much we dont know about the brain, which means tremendous potential for our knowledge to grow.

Among the most common neurological symptoms are loss of smell and taste, which could be the first clues that someone has Covid-19.

Other possible symptoms include headache, dizziness, loss of consciousness, weakness, seizures, paralysis, strokes and more.

We know the virus spreads through particles in the air, so it first enters the body through the nose and mouth. When this happens, its possible the virus then potentially crosses the cribriform plate, the bone at the top of the nose, to reach the olfactory bulb that houses the olfactory nerve and its branches. If the virus damages these nerves, a person can lose their sense of smell. If the virus also directly invades taste buds, it can prevent nerve fibers from transmitting signals to the brain and cause a person to lose their sense of taste.

Of course, thats just one hypothesis, but we know according to one study that up to 88% of 417 of patients who tested positive for Covid-19 had these types of symptoms. Most of them recovered within two weeks, without any ongoing neurological issues.

Another hypothesis has to do with a protein receptor called angiotensin converting enzyme known as ACE2 which is found in cells all over the body in the lungs, kidneys, blood vessels, muscles, nose and mouth. In the nose and mouth, the virus is thought to bind to ACE2 receptors in sensory nerve cells and block these cells from facilitating smell and taste.

ACE2 also helps maintain blood pressure and protects the heart and brain from damage. Its role is to lower levels of a molecule called angiotensin II. If angiotensin II levels build up, blood vessels constrict and reduce blood flow to organs, potentially damaging them.

Here is the most interesting thing we are starting to learn. Whether it is the body or the brain, most symptoms dont seem to come directly from the virus, but rather, the bodys overzealous immune response to fight the virus.

The story of how such a virus, with so little genetic information, can wreak havoc to our nervous system is really fascinating, said Dr. Majid Fotuhi, medical director of NeuroGrow Brain Fitness Center and affiliate staff at Johns Hopkins Medicine.

Take strokes, for example.

When the virus binds to ACE2 in blood vessels, it triggers an immune response sometimes referred to as a cytokine storm. Too much inflammation can impair the bodys clotting system and form millions of small clots or several large clots. Together with the higher levels of angiotensin II that constrict blood vessels, clots can block blood flow to the brain and lead to a stroke.

Some strokes are minor and patients may not realize they are having one. As people age, multiple strokes could build up and cause memory loss or poor attention. Other patients who recover from Covid may show symptoms of their silent strokes as depression, anxiety, insomnia, or cognitive decline later in life, according to Fotuhi.

But make no mistake, sometimes these strokes are severe or deadly even among healthy people in their 30s and 40s, doctors have found.

Too much inflammation can also break down the protective wall known as the blood-brain barrier and lead to brain swelling, seizures or spread of infection.

Thats how 5-year-old Skylar Herbert, daughter of two Detroit first responders, could have developed brain swelling from meningitis. She was the first child from Michigan to die from Covid-19.

Its not clear why she developed meningitis. But we know that the meninges is a protective layer around the brain and spinal cord and is rich in blood vessels and ACE2. In theory, if the virus binds to ACE2 in the meninges, this could lead to damage to the blood vessels and significant inflammation.

Some patients with the virus were also found to have Guillain-Barre Syndrome, a nerve disorder that can lead to paralysis. Here antibodies, formed in response to the virus, react to proteins found on nerves, causing damage.

But its important to remember that everyone responds to the virus differently.

There are people who have a measured response to the virus and their immune system can manage it without overreacting, Fotuhi said.

Healthy people who are asymptomatic are the ones who had just enough immune response to destroy the virus without creating a cytokine storm or blood clots.

Neurological complications arent unique to Covid-19. Viruses like the flu, measles, respiratory syncytial virus and Zika have them, too, as do the other types of coronaviruses, SARS and MERS.

How this happens boils down to two main mechanisms: direct viral invasion of the nervous system or damage from a hyperactive immune system.

Some neurologic manifestations like confusion or weakness may also be nonspecific complications of critical illness that are unrelated to the actual virus.

Neurologic involvement seems to be a prominent feature of this particular coronavirus, said Dr. Felicia Chow, a neuroinfectious disease expert at the University of California, San Francisco.

Or we may be seeing more neurologic complications with Covid simply because there are many more cases of Covid overall compared with prior coronavirus outbreaks.

Like what doctors see with Covid-19 and strokes.

Whats been reported so far isnt really something that we see that commonly with at least certain types of respiratory viruses, she said. But its hard to say with the still limited information that we have. A much deeper dive is needed to understand the true neurologic burden and sequelae of this pandemic.

There arent large studies looking at Covid-related neurological symptoms, so right now doctors are treating these symptoms like they would for patients who dont have the virus.

But small studies with a few hundred people have come out. One consistent feature is that patients with risk factors such as high blood pressure, diabetes and obesity who get Covid are at higher risk for severe outcomes, including neurological complications, than healthy and fit individuals.

Thats why regular exercise, healthy diet, proper sleep and reducing stress are still important during this pandemic. By
maintaining an active, healthy lifestyle, patients who end up getting infected can improve their odds of a faster and more favorable recovery, said Fotuhi.

For doctors, patients with Covid may not be sick with the typical viral symptoms youd expect like cough or fever. Some patients who show up in the emergency room have only shown signs of stroke. And brain symptoms could be a patients first and only symptoms. In certain situations, blood thinners and steroids may be as important as anti-viral medications.

Covid can have many different faces, Fotuhi said. Its important for people to appreciate that.

And its something well keep in mind as we take care of patients.

In covering the pandemic as journalists and caring for Covid patients as doctors, weve learned to keep an open mind. What we think today may change tomorrow and thats OK. Its part of the learning process. As our knowledge of the virus continues to grow, were one step closer in persevering through this pandemic together.

Weight Loss Tips That Work – Anti Aging News

Any one who has ever tried to drop some unwanted weight over the years has probably tried and heard of countless tips and strange weight loss advice from drinking celery juice to replacing meals with so-called weight loss cookies, and most often these pointers are promoted by those without any actual health expertise.

It is true that there are pages and pages full of misguided weight loss advice out there that one really should avoid, but there are also a ton of legitimate tips that are science backed and expert approved suggestions such as picking a time to exercise and sticking with it as a study published in the journal Obesity found that exercising at a certain time every day consistently may help successful weight loss.

Another helpful tip is to choose nuts over heavily processed snacks as a report published in BMJ Nutrition, Prevention & Health found that eating up to one ounce of nuts each day is linked with less weight gain and lower odds of obesity.

JAMA Internal Medicine published a report suggesting that a weight loss counselor may be helpful in helping to trim waistlines, showing that those with type 2 diabetes utilizing such counseling sessions with group medical visits helped them to lose weight and lower their blood sugar levels.

Losing weight can be challenging and even though it may be daunting every effort made is worth the benefits when it comes to improving health. The Journal of the National Cancer Institute published a study showing that overweight women who lost weight after turning 50 years old lowered their risks of developing breast cancer.

Diabetic Medicine published a report suggesting that it may be possible to potentially put type 2 diabetes into remission, finding that among those with type 2 diabetes losing 10% or more of their body weight within the first 5 years of diagnosis was associated with better odds of putting the disease into remission. Additionally, according to the American Heart Association carrying extra weight increases the odds of heart disease and stroke.

Whether you only have a few pounds to drop or a lot to lose experts can offer science backed tips and pointers to effectively help you on your weight loss journey such as eating slowly, portion control, keeping a food diary, totally body movement, keeping a gratitude journal, meal prep, getting enough sleep, not skipping meals, staying hydrated, cutting calories, eating more whole foods, avoiding sweetened beverages, removing unhealthy food from your home, and eating breakfast among others.

Janet Zinn, a licensed clinical social worker and psychotherapist says: I have my clients learn how to choose foods they like, really taste each morsel going into their mouths, and chew deliberately. I advise them to chew slowly, swallow only when the food is all chewed up, and repeat. It takes time to know we're full. Eating slowly allows us to not only enjoy our food more, but gives us better cues of satiety.

Christine King, the founder and CEO of the health and wellness company YourBestFit suggests that if You bite it, you write it! Thats my rule, and numerous studies have shown the effectiveness of food journaling for weight loss. One of my clients went out of town for one week. She stopped journaling and gained 13 pounds. I promise that keeping a food journal helps!

Exercise anything that moves.Thats my mantra and I started this after I broke my back and was paralyzed from the waist down. Do it in bed, while seated, standing, or walking. Just move. People have a misconception that five minutes doesnt make a difference, but every minute makes a difference. (And research published in January 2014 in the journal Progress in Cardiovascular Diseases showed that physical activity is critical when it comes to actually keeping lost weight off.) King

Lauren Manganiello, RD, a nutrition counselor and fitness coach suggests that Our eating habits are usually connected to our emotions whether we realize it or not. When we're stressed, we tend to reach for sweets. I tell clients that by keeping a daily journal of things you're grateful for, youre better able to cope with the stress by acknowledging it rather than reaching for dessert.

According to Angela Lemond, RDN, a registered dietitian nutritionist: A lack of sleep increases your hunger hormone ghrelin and decreases your satisfaction hormone, leptin, which can contribute to weight gain. When we are sleep deprived, we crave more salty and sweet foods. Why? Because anytime you feel more intense hunger, your cravings for higher energy aka higher calorie foods intensify. We also know that the way we think and process our emotions is affected by inadequate sleep, so its easy to connect this with an impaired ability to make sound choices in many areas of life, including with food. If we flip the coin, we can safely assume that when we are well rested, we will make better choices. When it comes to eating, that would mean that we would eat when we are truly hungry, and eat just until satisfied. Our hormones are also going to be better balanced because our bodies got the time needed to sleep, repair, and refresh.

Dont skip meals. You may think that this is helping you to burn calories, but you may be damaging your metabolism. The proper way to skip a meal is to begin an intermittent fasting schedule, but skipping a meal and intermittent fasting are not the same thing. In general forgoing eating can have negative consequences for the body, while intermittent fasting helps to get cravings under control and is a scheduled mindful eating practice. Intermittent fasting may not be best for everyone. When a person skips a meal they tend to overeat at some point to make up for it. When you split up your meals to be consumed throughout the day, the body will use the nutrients from the food more efficiently. Most experts agree that you should be eating three balanced meals a day and a healthy snack.

Megan Casper, RDN, a nutrition counselor and the founder and CEO of Nourished Bite points out that: Research has found that people who drank two glasses of water before a meal lost more weight than people who didnt drink water before meals and they kept it off. This simple tip works in two ways. Thirst can mask itself as hunger, causing you to eat more. And water makes you feel fuller, causing you to eat less during a meal.

According to the USDA ChooseMyPlate.gov half of your plate at any given meal should be nutrient dense fruits/veggies. Perhaps aim to make a balanced plate consisting of half vegetables, a quarter whole grains, and a quarter lean protein. Additionally, the Cleveland Clinic suggests not to eat until you are full rather to the 80% point to help tame overeating. There is no need to be part of the finish the plate club, instead pack any extra food away. This is good advice for over eaters who are just learning how to fill their stomach without going overboard, aiming for 80% is a good gauge to help with this as it instructs you to stop eating when you are beginning to feel slightly full. Slowing down helps with overeating because it takes around 20 minutes for the stomach to digest food.

Theres a strong relationship between sugar-sweetened beverages and weight gain in adults. If you regularly have a sip of something sweet, consider this: Research has shown that reducing intake of sugar-sweetened beverages can result in meaningful weight loss, even if it's the only change you make. Replacing a 20-ounce soda with sparkling water every day would save more than 20,000 calories over a few months, which could translate into more than five pounds of weight loss! Brittany Markides, RDN, the founder of Choose Food in Austin, Texas.

Meals consumed away from home tend to be higher in calories and lower in nutrients. A study published in the Journal of the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics found that the average restaurant entre contains over 1,000 calories, and an entire days worth of sodium and fat. When dining out to save on those calories, try splitting the entre or asking to substit
ute extra green veggies or a salad for the starchy potato or rice.

When looking for a snack and in doubt, reach for a low calorie, fiber rich and nutrient dense vegetable or fruit. You can even make fruits/veggies the star of your meal, for example rather than a main dish of pasta, lessen the pasta amount and add in some broccoli, cauliflower, and zucchini, with some small amount of chicken, garlic and lemon zest. Try considering a few squares of organic dark chocolate with an orange for a sweet dessert. This way you can still enjoy a small amount of pasta and a sweet treat while still being satisfied without depriving yourself.

Most people eat with their eyes and like to see that full plate; using smaller plates, bowls, and cups will reduce the amount of food you consume, while at the same time allowing yourself to fill your dish up and keep you from feeling deprived. For example, an observational study showed that people who used a 9-inch plate versus a 10- or 12-inch plate ate up to 22 percent less. Size matters, research consistently shows that people will consume more food when they are offered larger portions, according to the Mayo Clinic. There are many apps that offer visual cues that can help you to gauge what a portion size is to help you get a better handle on what you are eating.

Don't feel like you need to overhaul your entire life starting immediately. Assess where you are currently and then figure out where youd like to be in the future. A great starting point for mostly sedentary people is to get a step counter and see how much you walk on a normal day. Then set a step goal slightly higher than the norm and strive for that, working your way up slowly to a goal of 10,000 steps per day. Esther Avant, an ACE-certified personal trainer in Kapolei, Hawaii.

Try to avoid if not eliminate highly processed foods from your diet. That does not mean your meals will now be bland, healthy whole food options are far from being boring. There are many exciting colours from the rainbow and flavours to experiment with that come in a variety of textures and tastes ranging from naturally sweet to savory which can easily be enhanced with a wide selection of herbs and spices.

At some point in your weight loss journey you may experience some setbacks, but please keep in mind that this is not failure. Rather think of these minor speed bumps as an opportunity to learn and grow from. Pick yourself up and start over. The only true failure is if you give up.

So you say that you cant exercise for very long. That will change, your endurance, coordination and flexibility will gradually improve. You say its taking too long. Well unfortunately, there is no magic pill, you will need to work for it, and it may take some time. Stick to the healthy lifestyle path to achieve your goals. Most importantly remember that you are well worth every effort and the benefits that you will experience with improved health. You CAN do it!

Heart health: Malaysian experts show ways to break vicious cycle of passing unhealthy habits to kids – Malay Mail

Improve your heart health by adopting healthy lifestyle habits. Pexels.com pic

KUALA LUMPUR, July 22 As parenting roles, expectations and demands continue to grow in todays fast-paced lifestyle, Malaysian parents are seen to be highly vulnerable to high cholesterol and heart diseases.

That scenario is even more evident now as the country continues to grapple with heart disease being the leading cause of death in the country.

Highlighting the long-term implications of an unhealthy diet, health experts have warned that the vicious cycle of poor cholesterol management may lead from one generation to another.

According to Institut Jantung Negara (IJN) consultant cardiologist Dr Beni Rusani, poor lifestyle choices are the norm for the new generation of young parents.

Unhealthy eating habits, increased stress levels, sedentary lifestyle and smoking largely as a result of hectic work schedules predispose young parents to high cholesterol and other non-communicable chronic diseases (NCDs).

Heart disease is commonly diagnosed amongst people in the 50-60 age group, but to my point that NCDs do not happen overnight, the groundwork has been laid for at least a good 20 or so years.

In fact, Dr Beni pointed out that the onset of heart diseases in Malaysia is the youngest compared to other countries in the Southeast Asian region.

All the more reason that parents should be concerned about their heart health and high cholesterol from an early stage, he says.

In fighting high cholesterol, prevention is absolutely better than cure, added Dr Beni in a press release.

He said the nature of high cholesterol is often long-term in the making, hence, the longer it is being ignored, the harder it becomes to fix the problem.

Many will argue that prevention is easier said than done, but if parents struggle to find the right motivation, then do it for the sake of their kids.

This is because children tend to copy their parents behaviour.

Dr Beni said parents need to start being better role models and set good examples such as practising a balanced diet and regular exercise for their children to copy.

This way, we can break the vicious cycle of repeating their parents habits even before they become young adults.

It really is common sense and responsible decision-making the qualities of good parenting.

UM Specialist Centre (UMSC) dietetic services head Rozanna M Rosly said it was as easy as starting with improving ones eating habits.

As Malaysians, we cant help but have a healthy appetite and the convenience of fast food, eating out and food deliveries certainly arent making the situation any better.

But taking stock of some of the more positive lifestyle changes that occurred as a result of the recent movement control order, such as home-cooked meals and increased time for family bonding, we are most certainly capable of making heart-healthy choices the new normal, she said.

A heart-healthy balanced diet, according to Rozanna, is not rocket science, nor does it necessitate drastic lifestyle changes.

All it takes is a handful of life hacks that even parents with busy schedules can apply.

She pointed out the Malaysian Healthy Plate a good lifehack to master.

The guide is based on the concept of dividing the regular meal plate into three sections: quarter-quarter-half.

The first quarter is filled with protein such as fish, poultry, meat and legumes) and the second quarter with carbohydrates such as rice, noodles, bread and cereals, while the remaining half is packed with fruits and vegetables.

Emphasis is on the half, as a staggering 95 per cent of Malaysian adults do not consume the recommended daily intake of fruits and vegetables, she said.

Another life hack Rozanna pointed out is food swaps.

You will be surprised by just how many healthier food swap options there are with our everyday Malaysian dishes.

A good rule of thumb is to reduce oily, deep-fried foods and foods that are high in salt, as well as to watch your calorie count, she added.

As for unhealthy eating habits that Malaysians need to start breaking, Rozanna advised parents to reduce the amount of snacking, and instead choose healthier options such as fresh fruits and vegetables.

Keep processed meats and fast foods to a minimum. Watch not only what you eat but also what you drink.

Excessive consumption of carbonated and sugary drinks adds to your calorie count and, according to recent studies, increases the risk of heart diseases as well.

This Is Why Women Live Longer Than Men – Longevity LIVE

If you dont know by now, its a fact that women live longer than men. Any visit to an old age home will confirm this, and the science backs it up. Indeed, women can expect to live 7.6% longer than men at age 20 years, and 14% longer at age 80 years. You may think this has to do with something genetic or even some more elaborate health programs women embark on. Truth be told, men can learn some simpler and better health habits to live longer if they truly want to.

Women are more likely to visit their doctors for regular check-ups than men. In fact, men have admitted that they would rather be doing household chores, like cleaning toilets, than going to the doctor. This habit is often the difference behind discovering a health issue in its early phases, which will improve the outcome and even save lives.

Well, men face a higher risk of heart attacks, lung disease, and dying from unintentional injuries. Whats more, worldwide, men are more likely to commit suicide than women.

Good question.

It seems obvious that if you prioritize your health you will nip any potential illnesses or conditions in the bud. Yet researchers have confirmed the men are just not good at going to see a doctor. They believe it has to do with stigma and existing norms around masculinity.

Without question, cultural and traditional ideas about masculinity can influence how men perceive and prioritize health issues. In fact, research shows that men who adopt traditional ideas about masculinity often face more barriers to seeking health care.

Traditional ideas about masculinity also can cause men to avoid sharing their emotions and feelings. They fear that they will be perceived as weak if they share their fears and concerns about their mental health.

In fact, women are more likely to seek out care when it comes to their mental health. We are learning more and more that mental health plays a critical role in quality of life.

Since men dont seek help for their mental health issues, theyre also more likely to turn to harmful substances to cope.

This means that men are more likely to die from alcohol-related causes, and they are also more likely to abuse drugs when compared to women.

Most would agree these habits do not lend themselves well to living longer.

Research shows that men who visit the doctor have admitted to not always being honest about their health. They are also more likely to withhold information from their doctors in the past.

In addition to being embarrassed or uncomfortable, men also withhold information from their doctors because they are worried about the potential diagnosis that results might reveal should they tell the truth.

It will save lives. Simple. Its important to go for regular check-ups as this will help the doctor pick up on early warning signs of a more serious condition. Not all diseases have easily recognizable symptoms and this is why regular check-ups are so important. Take prostate cancer for example. If detected early, patients diagnosed with prostate cancer can have a much better prognosis.

Mental health is a real medical concern and men should address their mental health the same way they would any other health condition. Whats more, if they feel that their mental health has been in disarray lately, they need to understand that reaching out and seeking help is not a sign of weakness but rather of absolute strength.

Adopt lifestyle habits can help men maintain their health better. Healthy lifestyle habits include not smoking and regularly exercising for 30 minutes, at least 3 times a week.

Regular screening is a great way for both men and their doctors to have a better understanding of their overall health. That said, men should go for the following regular screening and exams:

A diet high in fiber-rich foods (whole grains, fruits, and vegetables) and low in refined sugar and processed foods is a great way to keep the body healthy. A Mediterranean or DASH diet is the healthiest diet to follow, according to research.

Men should also monitor their alcohol intake and stick to no more than two glasses of alcohol a day.

Men are more prone to accidents than women. This will obviously get in the way of anyones goal to live longer. Perhaps it is because they are more willing to take risks when it comes to activities. Whether it is abseiling off bridges, cycling down mountains, or even as simple as driving a car.

Indeed, research shows deaths from injury in auto-related accidents are more common in men than women. Its important that men be more safety-conscious when they are behind the wheel. They should obey the rules of the road and this includes not driving under the influence, obeying all speed laws, and staying off of their devices when driving.

Mens health is important and regardless of stigma and traditional ideas about masculinity. Men should do their best to always prioritize their health, so they can live longer. They owe it to themselves and to those closest to them.

Men should stop pretending they are not at risk. Click here

21 ways to reduce your Alzheimer’s risk, backed by research – KTVZ

There are 21 known ways to reduce your risk of developing Alzheimers, and 10 of those are backed by strong scientific evidence, new research has revealed.

The preventative steps with the most impact are mentally stimulating activities, including reading and chess; avoiding stress, depression and head trauma; and avoiding diabetes, high blood pressure and weight gain in midlife and beyond, according to a meta-analysis released Monday.

Regular physical exercise, quality sleep, no smoking, maintaining good heart health in later life and including vitamin C in the diet are among the nine preventative actions with slightly weaker but still supportive evidence.

If risk factors can be modified, the evidence suggests that at least one out of every three cases of Alzheimers may be preventable, said neurologist Dr. Richard Isaacson, director of the Alzheimers Prevention Clinic at Weill Cornell Medicine.

People can take different roads to Alzheimers disease, said Isaacson, who was not involved in the study. This paper helps to provide an evidence-based framework for doctors and patients to consider when managing a persons Alzheimers risk.

The study published in the Journal of Neurology, Neurosurgery & Psychiatry.

Two-thirds of the most promising interventions focused on healthy lifestyle changes and targeting risk factors for cardiovascular disease, such as high blood pressure and cholesterol levels.

The study analyzed 395 observational prospective studies and randomized controlled trials. These efforts, the researchers said, were the most comprehensive and large-scale systematic review and meta-analysis for Alzheimers disease to date.

The top 10 preventative actions backed by science that the study found included:

One of the most important and commonly overlooked modifiable factors is a high level of homocysteine in the blood, Isaacson said. In his New York-based preventative clinic, he said he will often suggest B-complex vitamins to combat elevated homocysteine levels.

However, past research has shown that B-vitamin supplementation works better if these people also have sufficient levels of Omega3s, which are a brain-healthy fat found in fatty fish, for example, Isaacson explained.

So, this is just one of the many examples of the complex web of decision-making that goes into the clinical care of people at risk for the disease.

Nine actions that had weaker, but still positive, impacts on reducing the risk of developing Alzheimers were:

Of the 21 study recommendations, the last two were actions that physicians should avoid when working with patients at risk of Alzheimers disease. Strong evidence was found against giving postmenopausal women estrogen replacement therapy to improve cognition.

I wholly agree with this statement but for women in the peri-menopause and early menopause, hormone replacement therapy may sometimes be considered based on a variety of other factors, Isaacson said.

Finally, weaker evidence indicated that acetylcholinesterase inhibitors drugs like donepezil and galantamine, which are often prescribed to treat memory loss in people with diagnosed Alzheimers disease should not be used as a prevention tactic.

Those are drugs for symptomatic people with mild or worse dementia, Isaacson said. Those drugs work for symptoms but dont slow disease progression.

People who are concerned about their risk of developing Alzheimers should work with a doctor trained in the field to develop an individualized plan to reduce their risk, Isaacson said.

Its also important to note that there is not a single magic pill or action that can prevent Alzheimers, he said.

Risk reduction care is not one size fits all it needs to be comprehensive and individually tailored, ideally under a doctors supervision.
