In the past few months, Fort Smith health-care providers have seen advancements in two particular medical specialties as a response to an evolving local market.
Recruitment of several medical specialists is also an ongoing task for both of Fort Smiths major hospitals, which conduct a community assessment every three years.
Cardiology and urology are two medical areas that have shown the greatest need.
Heart patients with atrial fibrillation have found a new cardiac electrophysiologist at Sparks Health System with Dr. German Kamalov following a restructuring at Cooper Clinic to focus on patient monitoring.
Urology patients now have 24-hour access to a team of urologists at Mercy Hospital Fort Smith through a partnership with Urologic Specialists of Oklahoma. The group of over 20 urologists has served the Tulsa market for over 60 years and began last year working with Mercy Fort Smith. In early April the program expands to offer two urologists in Fort Smith two days per week one in surgery and one in the outpatient clinic.
Currently the urologists rotate in Fort Smith on three- to four-day shifts. The groups outpatient clinic is in the Mercy Medical Tower, 2713 S. 74th St., Suite 104, in Fort Smith.
Sparks Urology Group in Fort Smith has four urologists and a physician assistant located at 5500 Ellsworth Road with Drs. Ronald Knobloch, John David Terrell, John Lange, Gerald Wahman and Lauren Smith.
Cooper Clinic also has two specialists in urology. Dr. Carey Andreoiu is one of only three urogynecologists in Arkansas. She joined Cooper Clinic in 2014 and is specially trained in the evaluation and treatment of Urologic problems unique to women. She also provides general gynecological care.
Dr. Matei Andreoiu, Cary Andreoius husband, is also a urologist and joined Cooper Clinic in 2013. He specializes in treating urologic conditions of both men and women including kidney stones, kidney or bladder tumors, prostate problems and male impotence.
The Andreoius received fellowship training through the Cleveland Clinic Florida and are trained in the da Vinci Robotic Surgical System. They perform procedures at both Mercy Fort Smith and Sparks.

Health care stocks were ending slightly lower today with the NYSE Health Care Sector Index dropping less than 0.1% and shares of health care companies in the S&P 500 retreating 0.1% as a group.
In company news, Tracon Pharmaceuticals ( TCON ) reached a new, all-time high Tuesday after analysts at Oppenheimer, Stifel Nicolaus and Needham & Co. all began coverage today of the oncology and age-related drug treatments company.
Oppenheimer started TCON with an Outperform rating and a $22 price target, with analyst Yigal Mochomovitz citing the company's TRC-105 drug candidate as an "explored and novel" target to block blood vessel growth in cancer.
Stifel began its coverage of TCON with a Buy rating and a $16 price target while Needham also initiated the stock with a Buy rating and a price target of $19 a share.

Government data, shows health spending increasing by 5 percent last year, compared to 3.6 percent in 2013. If confirmed by the final tally, health-care spending during 2014 would mark the biggest jump since before the recession.

in spite of having insurance, a consumer involved in a car wreck and taken to a non-network hospital might receive additional bills, not just from the hospital, but from the radiologist who read his X-rays, the surgeon who repaired his broken leg and the laboratory that processed his blood tests.
For example, there were no in-network emergency room physicians or anesthesiologists in some of the hospitals participating in plans offered by three large insurers in Texas in 2013 and 2014, according to a survey of state data by the Center for Public Policy Priorities, a Texas advocacy group. The Obama administration has blocked health plans without hospital benefits that many large employers argued fulfilled their obligations under the Affordable Care Act.
Companies with millions of workers, mainly in lower-wage industries such as staffing, retailing, restaurants and hotels that hadn't offered health coverage previously, had been flocking toward such insurance for 2015.
Plans lacking substantial coverage of hospital and physician services don't qualify as "minimum value" coverage under the law and so do not shield employers from fines of $3,000 or more per worker, the Department of Health and Human Services said late Friday.
The move closes what many saw as a surprising loophole, first reported by Kaiser Health News in September, that let companies bypass the health law's strictest standard for large-employer coverage while at the same time stranding workers in sub-par insurance. Employees offered such plans would have been ineligible for tax credits to buy more comprehensive coverage in the law's online marketplaces.
The agency did decide to allow such plans for this year only if employers had signed contracts by Nov. 4.
However, it also granted relief to workers offered such coverage, saying they may receive tax credits according to their income to buy more comprehensive insurance in the online exchanges. Ordinarily, employees offered coverage qualifying as minimum value aren't eligible for the subsidies.
Despite what Washington and Lee University law professor Timothy Jost called "a lot of pushback" from employers, HHS has now followed through on earlier guidance that it intended to disallow such coverage.
A plan without hospital benefits "is not a health plan in any meaningful sense," the agency said in a large batch of regulations issued Friday. Scoring such a plan as minimum value "would adversely affect employees (particularly those with significant health risks) who understandably would find this coverage unacceptable. ..."

Health care stocks were broadly higher today with the NYSE Health Care Sector Index adding about 0.5% and shares of health care companies in the S&P 500 climbing 0.3% as a group.
In company news, Celldex Therapeutics ( CLDX ) rallied Monday after U.S regulators designated the company's rindopepimut drug candidate as a Breakthrough Therapy for adult patients with a specific type of brain tumor.
The U.S. Food and Drug Administrations uses breakthrough-therapy designation to expedite the development and review of drugs for serious or life-threatening conditions. Typically, the agency makes its decision based on data from at least clinical trial demonstrating the drug may offer substantial improvement over other currently available therapies.
The company rindopepimut drug candidate targets EGFRvIII-positive glioblastoma, a particularly aggressive form of brain cancer and whose patients often have a worse prognosis than the general glioblastoma population, including shorter long-term survivals.

HUNTINGTON, W.V. For Tabitha Waugh, it was another typical day of chaos on the sixth floor cancer ward.
The fire alarm was blaring for the second time that afternoon, prompting patients to stumble out of their rooms. One confused elderly man approached Ms. Waugh, a registered nurse at St. Marys Medical Center here, but she had no time to console him. An aide was hollering from another room, where a patient sat dazed on the edge of his bed, blood pooling on the floor from the IV he had yanked from his vein.
Hey, big guy, can you lay back in bed? she asked, as she cleaned the patient before inserting a new line. He winced. Hold my hand, O.K.? she said.
Ms. Waugh, who is 30 and the main breadwinner in her family of four, still had three hours to go before the end of a 12-hour shift. But despite the stresses and constant demands, all the hard work was paying off.
Her wage of nearly $27 an hour provides the mainstay for a comfortable life that includes a three-bedroom home, a pickup truck and a new sport utility vehicle, tumbling classes for her 3-year-old, Piper, and dozens of bright blue Thomas the Tank Engine cars heaped under the double bed of her 6-year-old, Collin.

The daughter of a teachers aide and a gas station manager, Ms. Waugh, like many other hard-working and often overlooked Americans, has secured a spot in a profoundly transformed middle class. While the group continues to include large numbers of people sitting at desks, far fewer middle-income workers of the 21st century are donning overalls. Instead, reflecting the biggest change in recent years, millions more are in scrubs.
We used to think about the men going out with their lunch bucket to their factory, and those were good jobs, said Jane Waldfogel, a professor at Columbia University who studies work and family issues. Whats the corresponding job today? Its in the health care sector.
In 1980, 1.4 million jobs in health care paid a middle class wage: $40,000 to $80,000 a year in todays money. Now, the figure is 4.5 million.
The pay of registered nurses now the third-largest middle-income occupation and one that continues to be overwhelmingly female has risen strongly along with the increasing demands of the job. The median salary of $61,000 a year in 2012 was 55 percent greater, adjusted for inflation, than three decades earlier.
And it was about $9,000 more than the shriveled wages of, say, a phone company repairman, who would have been more likely to head a middle-class family in the 1980s. Back then, more than a quarter of middle-income jobs were in manufacturing, a sector long dominated by men. Today, it is just 13 percent.

WASHINGTON Millions of people could lose health insurance subsidies in the coming months if the Supreme Court sides with opponents of President Barack Obamas health care overhaul.
And one thing was clear this weekend as the nations governors gathered in Washington: Many of the states that could be affected are not prepared for the potential fallout.
In rounds of interviews at the National Governors Associations winter meeting, several governors indicated they could do little about the estimated 8 million people who could drop coverage if they were to lose health insurance subsidies later this year a scenario that legal experts suggest is a real possibility. While preliminary state-level discussions have begun in some cases, many governors charged that Congress should bear the burden of fixing any problems.
That responsibility doesnt fall in the hands of the states or the governors, it falls in the hands of the leaders right here in Washington, said Wisconsin Gov. Scott Walker, who is contemplating a run for the Republican presidential nomination in 2016. Hes one of the many Republican leaders who resisted efforts to create a state-based health insurance exchange.
Indeed, while the Supreme Court deemed the health care overhaul constitutional more than two years ago, the Affordable Care Act still sits on shifting political sands.
The Supreme Court will hear arguments March 4 on whether the health care law allows the federal government to pay subsidies in states that declined to set up their own insurance markets, or exchanges. For many Americans, the subsidies make the insurance affordable. More than 30 states largely those led by Republicans declined to set up state-based systems and have exchanges run by the federal government instead.
We declined to operate a state exchange along with a majority of other states, said Indiana Gov. Mike Pence, a Republican who is also weighing a 2016 White House run and supports the repeal of the health care law. Right now were just evaluating what our options are depending on what the Supreme Court decides.
Coverage losses would be concentrated largely in Republican-led states across the South and Midwest that have resisted the law, among them Florida, Maine, North Carolina, Michigan, Texas, Virginia and New Jersey.
Residents of states that are running their own markets, including California and New York, would continue to receive benefits.
