New Strut anthology compiles 20 years of Cajmere/Green Velvet and friends

Despite electronic music's ostensibly futurist bent, house music in 2012 sounds overwhelmingly like 1992 all over again: All tracky drum grooves, stabbing pianos, and staccato bass lines, with the odd wailing diva thrown in for good measure. That's hardly a bad thing if it ain't broke, etc. but the most encouraging side effect of house music's current retro fixation has been the way that it has helped to shine a spotlight on some of the genre's pioneers.

Enter Chicago's Curtis Jones, better known under his aliases Cajmere and Green Velvet. House music was already deeply ingrained in Chicago by the time that Jones started making music in 1990, with just a drum machine, a Yamaha synthesizer, and a Tascam 4-track recorder. But he and his Cajual label, founded in 1992, helped pump fresh energy into the scene, turning out raw, skeletal, faintly unhinged machine funk shaded with classic soul.

A new compilation from the U.K.'s Strut label, Only 4 U: The Sound of Cajmere & Cajual Records 1992 2012, surveys some of the best music to appear on the label in the past 20 years. (Despite the title, the vast majority of the material on the double-disc comp is from the period between 1992 and 1997.) Alongside obvious, enduring hits like Cajmere's "Percolator" and Cajmere and Dajae's "Brighter Days," there's plenty more to discover here: Johnny Fiasco's organ-soaked jack track "Taurus," Gemini's psychedelic carnival jam "Le Fusion," and, particularly, Adam's "Moments in Time," a disorienting whirl of syncopated drums and off-beat arpeggios that suggests the off-kilter approach that Chicago's Jamal Moss would take in his own work as Hieroglyphic Being. From the soulful to the seriously twisted, all of house music's essential elements are here in this anthology.

For Big Boi and Kelly Rowland, reflecting on what their mothers told them necessitates returning to the up-to-the-minute styles of the '80s. "Mama Told Me," a track from Big Boi's upcoming Vicious Lies and Dangerous Rumors that we've already heard in both Rowland- and Little Dragon-assisted versions, draws on svelte, rubbery-synthed '80s R&B like that of Bobby Brown, who gets a lyrical name-check. The video, too, reaches back for flashy graphics that would've looked like the future in a Tron-era video arcade. The OutKast rapper and former Destiny's Child singer never quite appear to be in the same shot, but both have a sophisticated look about them: Big Boi in dapper hat and glasses, Rowland in a feathery coat. There's gratuitous cognac product placement, and an equally gratuitous dancing pyramid with legs. That's the one your mother warned you about.

Big Boi also unveiled the official track list forVicious Lies and Dangerous Rumors, now due out on December 11 via Def Jam. We've already been to not one but two listening sessions for the album, so the credits don't offer much in the way of surprises, but yeah: Wavves, Phantogram, and Little Dragon all appear on Big Boi's new album. With companies like Google creating self-driving cars and augmented-reality glasses, futurist Ray Kurzweil's predictions are starting to sound much more realistic.

Kurzweil, cofounder of Singularity University, became famous for creating the first text-to-speech software. Forbes called him "the ultimate thinking machine."

With technology advancing at increasingly rapid rate, and researchers making serious headway into discovering the mysteries of the brain, it seems as if we'll all be reconstituted as a computer someday.

This piece of found footage dates to between the wars, a time when the USSR was struggling to define its place in the world and establish its legitimacy on the international level, while simultaneously trying to build identity and solidarity among its people. During this time the Soviet propaganda machine was running at full steam, and this piece is emblematic of the films of the time, in its use of a minimalist allegorical narrative, fear tactics, and modeling clay to push Marxist values upon the citizens. Like other Soviet propaganda, it combines traditional Russian music with more contemporary forms to try and forge an identity that is futurist and materialist, while still deeply immersed in Russian cultural roots.
