“Party and Camping Mode”

As if “Romance Mode” and “Toilet Humor” wasn’t enough. Tesla owners have two more features to look forward to: “Party and Camping Mode.”

CEO Elon Musk confirmed in a tweet on Thursday that the feature would roll out in “probably a month or two.” Party and Camping Mode would allow Tesla Model S, Model X, and Model 3 owners to set the temperature, air flow, lights, and music for “48 hours or more” according to a July 2018 tweet from Musk — the first time the idea cropped up.

The new modes would also Tesla owners to power various electronic devices directly from the car’s remaining battery reserves — a big battery means plenty of juice for running air conditioning systems and music while powering things like coolers or external lights.

Tesla Camping

People have actually been sleeping in their Teslas for a number of years now. A “Camper Mode” already exists, which allows owners to set the temperature for a good night’s sleep — whether they’re parked in the jungle or in the middle of a snow storm. With the rear seats folded down, there’s enough space for a twin mattress.

The upcoming “Party and Camping Mode” would add the ability to power devices through the outlet located in the center console.

Modes Galore

The most recent software addition to Tesla’s on-board software suite is a “Dog Mode” that will keep dogs cool in hot weather while their masters are running errands.

A “Sentry Mode” released at the same time keeps the car safe and will “play Bach’s Toccata and Fugue during a robbery (and keep Summer safe),” Musk tweeted earlier this year.

Scientists Call for a Ban on AI-Controlled Killer Robots

Killer Robots

Killer robots are coming for us all.

But rather than a T-1000 spewing one-liners, autonomous weapon systems like drones could end up replacing human soldiers on the battlefield entirely, given enough time.

But is it ethical to have an artificial intelligence call the shots and decide to take a human life?

Autonomous Weapons

Experts convening at the American Association for the Advancement of Science meeting in Washington DC this week had a clear answer: a resounding no. The group of experts — including ethics professors and human rights advocates — are calling for a ban on the development of AI-controlled weapons, as the BBC reports.

“We are not talking about walking, talking terminator robots that are about to take over the world; what we are concerned about is much more imminent: conventional weapons systems with autonomy,” Human Right’s Watch advocacy director Mary Wareham told the BBC.

Watching Human Rights

Another big question that arises: who is responsible when a machine does decide to take a human life? Is it the person who made the machine?

“The delegation of authority to kill to a machine is not justified and a violation of human rights because machines are not moral agents and so cannot be responsible for making decisions of life and death,” associate professor from the New School in New York Peter Asaro told the BBC.

But not everybody is on board to fully denounce the use of AI-controlled weapon systems. The U.S. and Russia were among several countries that opposed an outright ban on autonomous weapons following a week of talks in Geneva in September.

Research: Planting Trillions of Trees Could Cancel Out CO2 Emissions

An ambitious new analysis found that there's space to plant 1.2 trillion new trees — a number that would absorb more carbon than human emissions.

Fresh Air

An ambitious new analysis of the world’s forests found that there’s space to plant 1.2 trillion new trees — a number that would absorb more carbon than human emissions.

According to the new data, ETH Zurich researcher Thomas Crowther told The Independent, trees are “our most powerful weapon in the fight against climate change.”

Wiped Out

Crowther told the Independent that the new analysis, which he presented at a conference this weekend, suggests that a worldwide tree-planting spree would have a greater impact on the planet’s environment than building wind turbines or vegetarian diets — an effort, he says, that could cancel a decade of greenhouse emissions.

“There’s 400 gigatons now, in the 3 trillion trees, and if you were to scale that up by another trillion trees that’s in the order of hundreds of gigatons captured from the atmosphere — at least 10 years of anthropogenic emissions completely wiped out,” he told the newspaper.

Dank Trees

Unlike high tech solutions to climate change like carbon capture systems, Crowther argued, trees are nice because anyone can plant one.

“It’s a beautiful thing because everyone can get involved,” he told The Independent. “Trees literally just make people happier in urban environments, they improve air quality, water quality, food quality, ecosystem service, it’s such an easy, tangible thing.”

Navy’s Giant New Robot Sub Will Prowl Ocean For Months Autonomously

The Navy just awarded Boeing a contract to build a giant robot submarine, which it says will prowl the depths of the ocean autonomously.

Absolute Unit

The Navy just awarded Boeing a contract to build a giant robot submarine, called the Orca Extra-Large Unmanned Undersea Vehicle, which it says will prowl the depths of the ocean autonomously for months at a time.

The U.S. Naval Institute says the sub will be used for “mine countermeasures, anti-submarine warfare, anti-surface warfare, electronic warfare and strike missions.”

Extra Large Sub

The chunky Orca design will be 51 feet long and with a diameter of about 8.5 feet, and weigh about 50 tons, according to Popular Mechanics. New Atlas vvvvvvvvv it’ll be diesel-electric.

It’ll also be modular, with a “payload system” that can house 2,000 cubic feet of custom equipment.

Body by Boeing

The Orca will also potentially house some serious weapons, PopMech reports, with the ability to pack light and heavyweight torpedoes and lay mines — or it could stick to autonomous reconnaissance.

“This sort of versatility in a single, low-cost package is fairly unheard of in military spending,” PopMech wrote.

NASA Chief: SpaceX’s Starship Tougher Than Any NASA Project, Ever

A NASA director warned that Elon Musk's proposed Starship design was going to be

Orders of Magnitude

In a new interview with Business Insider, the director of the Space Technology and Exploration Directorate at NASA Langley warned that Elon Musk’s proposed Starship design was going to be “orders of magnitude” more difficult than any NASA project in history.

“It won’t be easy for us or SpaceX,” Walt Engelund told Business Insider.

Sweating Bullets

Engelund’s specific concern is Musk’s plan to cool the rocket by “bleeding” fuel through small pores. He asked what would happen, for instance, if a “bird poops on your rocket and it plugs up a few holes.”

“I’ve seen instances where you’ll get one clogged channel… and it will immediately result in burn-throughs,” the chief engineer told the business magazine. “A model will disappear in a hypersonic wind tunnel. It almost vaporizes, there’s so much energy and so much heat.”

Élan Musk

At the same time, Engelund admitted, SpaceX is bringing unprecedented energy and creativity to the private space industry, so he doesn’t rule out Starship succeeding — and he foresees further collaboration between the two organizations.

“They’ve surprised a lot of people, and have a lot of smart people working for them, and Elon seems to be really committed and dedicated to this,” Engelund told Business Insider. “Perhaps there are some things that we could do with them. I suspect there will be.”

NASA Is Studying Whether a Mars Crew Would Need a Class Clown

An anthropologist is making the case that long space missions, like a crewed trip to Mars, would require crew members with senses of humor.

Class Clown

An anthropologist at the University of Florida is making the case that long space missions, like a crewed trip to Mars, would require crew members with pronounced senses of humor to build social bridges and defuse tension at a perilous distance from Earth.

“These are people that have the ability to pull everyone together, bridge gaps when tensions appear and really boost morale,” said Jeffrey Johnson, who’s working with NASA to study the importance of humor during long spaceflights, in an interview with the Guardian. “When you’re living with others in a confined space for a long period of time, such as on a mission to Mars, tensions are likely to fray.”

Far From Home

Before he turned his work to astronauts, Johnson spent years studying another isolated group: long term workers in Antarctica, where he found that self-appointed clowns and practical jokers were crucial to forging bonds under tense conditions.

“These roles are informal, they emerge within the group,” Johnson told the Guardian. “But the interesting thing is that if you have the right combination the group does very well. And if you don’t, the group does very badly.”

Mission Critical

In a mission to Mars, communication delays could be as long as 20 minutes — and the eight month trip takes astronauts far from health care and other resources back on Earth.

“It’s vital you have somebody who can help everyone get along, so they can do their jobs and get there and back safely,” Johnson told the Guardian. “It’s mission critical.”

Australia Is Planting a Billion Trees to Fight Climate Change

The Australian government is gearing up to plant a billion new trees, as part of a vast campaign aimed to meet the climate targets.

Tree Guy

The Australian government is gearing up to plant a billion new trees, as part of a vast campaign aimed to meet the climate targets set by the Paris Agreement.

The government estimates that the project, which will run until 2050, will eventually remove 18 million tons of greenhouse gases per years — an intriguing example of a less technical response to climate change.

Forest Gump

The news dovetails neatly with new research, by researchers at ETH Zurich, that found that a widespread campaign of tree-planting worldwide could make a substantial dent in the world’s net greenhouse gas emissions.

Zurich researcher Thomas Crowther told The Independent that trees are “our most powerful weapon in the fight against climate change.”

Deep Roots

A billion trees is an impressive start, of course, but it’s substantially less than the trillion extra trees that Crowther and his colleagues estimate the Earth could support.

“It’s a beautiful thing because everyone can get involved,” Crowther told The Independent. “Trees literally just make people happier in urban environments, they improve air quality, water quality, food quality, ecosystem service, it’s such an easy, tangible thing.”

The Dead Mars Rover Didn’t Actually Say That “My Battery” Thing

NASA's Opportunity Mars rover's last words weren't literally that

My Battery Is Low

When news broke last week that NASA had finally given up hope on its long-lived Opportunity Mars rover, one fact dominated the conversation: that the rover’s last words were the emo-sounding line “My battery is low and it’s getting dark.”

The line originated with science reporter Jacob Margolis, who tweeted that those had “basically” been the rover’s last words. The internet immediately exploded, with the tweet going viral and the line being cited in NPR, the New York Daily NewsABC and, for the sake of transparency, Futurism.

Skept-o-meter

Now, Margolis is correcting the record. In a new piece for LAist, he clarified that the “poetic translation” was based on what two Mars Exploration Rover Mission scientists told him about the rover’s final transmissions — not a literal message.

“While not as catchy as seven words on a T-shirt, Oppy’s final message back to headquarters is still impressive,” Margolis wrote in LAist.

It’s Getting Dark

Still, Margolis says, the fact that Opportunity was still broadcasting messages a decade and a half after launch to an alien world is extraordinarily impressive.

“And the fact that robot was super cute, doesn’t hurt either,” he quipped.

AFROFUTURISM

The Americas. This is where the End began. The West, the place of Prophecy, the place of Destiny. The genetic cellular database of Ancestral awakenings thrums in tune to the drumbeat call of generations of soul, of pain and joy rising above thespontaneouseruption of life, uncontrollable, unbounded, free of constriction or constraint in its purest form. This is the natural path life takes like water, flowing down or up whatever channel presents a path, making one where none exists, or deepening preexisting ways, widening, eroding resistance whenever encountered to open the way for a more intense flow of energy.

What doesall or any of this have to do with Hip Hop? With a bunch of kids who play their music too loud, who seem to have a fascination with cursing, disrespect of authority and women, baggy clothing, crime and material culture? How is any of this spiritual in nature and what does it have to do with consciousness? To answer these questions fully it is necessary to understand what Hip Hop is, what it really represents, where it came from and where it is going.

Loosely defined, it isthe culture of the urbanized underclass, of the disaffected and the disillusioned masses. A culture of rebellion and revolt that employs every mode of communication known to humanity in order to get its message across. Music, art, the spoken word, the beat, movement. MCing, DJing, Break Dancing/Popping/Locking and Graffiti are its major expressions, all of which encompass the primal cries of those relegated to possessing only their spirits and souls and little else of material substance. As a post-modern deconstruction of a Western European meta-narrative, Hip Hop stands as an exemplar ofthe effect upon the individual of societal ills that are now global in scope. Ageless, as an expression of African-based musical and communicative forms of expression, Hip Hop was informally born as a genre in late 1970s New York City and the surrounding region, expanding relatively quickly from a purely regional expression to its current status as multi-billion dollar music of the global youth culture. It is fair to say that Hip Hop has come a long way. But it is also fair to say that it has a way to go still before it reaches its full potential.

Afrofuturism as a movement has evolved alongside Hip Hop, similarly having no definitive beginning while simultaneously coalescing alongside Hip Hop in urban America during the late 1970s. Its formal inception occurs much later, in the late 1990s and into the 00s as the online presence of African Americans grew stronger. The application of diverse academic traditions to the same questions was the beginning of a process that sought to dissect the cultural and media-based discourse of African-originated and futuristically-themed influence in the preceding decades in the attempt to define their interests and cultural memes.

And so it was that a small, ethnically diverse but concentrated listserv, called Afrofuturism, was born and prospered, for a time. Beyond the vigorous debates, expositions of consciousness, collaborations and intellectualisms lay an underlying strata of vast potentiality and possibility, made manifest through the broad and open genres of science and speculative fiction. The movement was represented by black authors, academics, Hip Hop headz and performers alike, all sharing a similar fascination with futuristic themes and expressions of modern societal tropes under the guise of the fantastic. Afrofuturism never really coalesced as a full-blown cultural shift outside of the avant-garde arts and music scenes of the large urban areas, but the fish bowl-like arena the internet was in those days brought larger and more mainstream attention to this small collective of personalities and ideas, raised against the growing din of diverse voices the Net was soon to become.

Hip Hop and the Afrofuture cannot beseparated from the evolution of America as a nation, but they also cannot be separated from the evolution of consciousness not only of this country, but of the world. The impact of Hip Hop has been felt upon every continent, in every country. Rap is the music of the global youth culture. It is the sound ofrebellionand discontentthat can be heardwhereverthe young are gathered and wherever inequalities have resulted in the formalization of destitution. The original means by which Hip Hop formedhave been repeated in country after country, city after city as the young and the listless have found themselves with little money and no musical education but still possessed of singing hearts and dancing souls, theirs or their parents record collections and an ever-growing mass of CDs and MP3s that consolidate the Music of the Ages. The ready availability and affordability of computers, digital music and sound equipment have created theperfect environment for a large-scale explosion of beat-centered creativity as the hard, biting sounds of rap drive the air and digital-waves toward the resolution of a Hip Hop planet, born to tear down paradigms not built for their edification.

There is Russian Hip Hop, Middle Eastern Hip Hop, African Hip Hop, European Hip Hop, Latin American Hip Hop. You will find baggy jeans and ball caps worn by youth of every ethnicity, shade, size or gender in every country in the world. This acceptance of aquintessentiallyAmerican artform by two generations, X and Y, who are now birthing a third, generation Z, will take the artform into new territory as global consciousness coalesces around the ideals that undergird the very essence of Hip Hop. Freedom of expression and lifestyle choices, a disdain for centralized authority, a dearth of color consciousness and a dislike of the trappings of corporate and/or governmental culture typify the belief system of Hip Hop Headz around the globe. The continuing revelations regarding the world-wide dominance of elite, corporate conspiracies have resulted in an ever-spreading understanding of the many threads that tie in to this reality, be they economic, political or cultural in nature. A wide-spread distrust of governmental measures as well as a realization that corporate culture does not have the best interests of the individual in mind bind diverse cultures and ethnicities together in recognition of their shared servitude and bondage to global consumer culture and hegemonic political domination by a self-serving and mega-rich elite.

The material and mainstream response to the impact of Hip Hop began early in its modern evolution. With the success of the Conscious Hip Hop movement in the United States in the late 1980s and early 1990s, a concerted effort was made on the part ofthe Music Industry to derail the movement by changing the focus of the music from positive messages, African history and evolved states of being to that of material wealth, violence and hyper-sexuality. According to music industry insiders, there was asuccessful attempt to provide monetary incentives and change the focus of individual Hip Hop artists to rap more about these topics and also to contract artists that would create the type of music that glorified self-hate and violence in many forms. This era was accompanied by rising drug use, gang violence in many inner cities and the destruction of previously cohesive neighborhoods by gentrification and urban renewal projects that diffused black power by moving populations out of the urban center and into suburban apartment complexes. The simultaneous influx of illegal drugs as well as the continuing unavailability of stable sources of income into these uprooted communities contributed heavily to the continuing dismantling of black political power. But what the Powers-That-Be did not take into account was the expansion of Hip Hops influence out of the black community and into the white community and from there, into the rest of the world. Even though the possibility of this happening was evident from its earliest beginnings as exemplified by its multi-ethnic composition in the early to mid-80s as it spread like wildfire across America the change in the focus of Hip Hop from a black consciousness to a gangsta/thug mentality that glorified the patriarchy and material accumulation appealed to the children of the suburbs, the children of affluence, the white children of th establishment. Their rebellion against their parents and dedicated economic commitment to Hip Hop raised theart formto national and internationalprominence, if not in spite of, thenbecause of the negative direction the Industry chose to force the music into.

As Hip Hop has evolved within the crucible of a planet in the throes of change, it has come to represent a shifting of consciousness, being the musical form best suited for political and social challenges. Its hard, eviscerating beats, biting and rough dictions and choruses, are theperfect backdrop to a world on the cusp oftransformationalchange. While mainstream Rap still possesses that material edge that glorifies bling, the dollar bill and the objectification of women as sexual objects, underground Hip Hop culture remains conscious and concerned with the plight of the underclass the world across. With the spread of Internet access across the planet, that underclass has realized that they hold common cause with each other, no matter their country or origin or color. A global political consciousness is a precursor to a global spiritual consciousness as people become aware that politics is only the outermost layer of an affliction that goes much deeper. The speculative aspects of the Afro-future arise in this space created by infinite potentiality as artists meld their conceptions of the present with ideas about what could be, in a perfect world. The addition of both New Age and Afrocentric spiritual ideals, as well as the culmination of the Age centered around the 2012 fulcrum combine to create a discourse ofextraordinary exceptionalism that surpasses nation-hood and represents an elevated sense of connection, of oneness, of common cause.

There is a revolution of the spirit as well as the body that is overcoming the dictates of materiality, of modernism and the consumer culture. While there are many causative factors that have contributed to this awakening, the impact of African-related innovations and movements in the West have been strongly felt. From the Haitian revolution and the victories of TouissantLOuverture, to Nat Turner, the Civil War and the Civil Rights movement, there is a connection. From Jazz to Country to New Age genres, there is a connection. From Fats Domino, Little Richard and other African-Americans impact upon the evolution of Rock and Roll to the evolution of electronic and computer-based music and art forms, there is a connection. This connection is the expression of the Souls of Black Folk, the visceral nature of their interactions with the world, the spirit-filled mass consciousness that resists all attempts at suppression, repression and genocide. It is, in microcosm, representative of the human spirit in macrocosm, it is what happens when a group of people is put upon for centuries at a time and their desire for utter freedom grows beyond the capacity of any seeking control over them to contain. It is when expression becomes mandatory, wherenot even death is threat enough to maintain silence, that the extraordinary becomes mundane and wonder fills the world to overflowing on a daily basis.

Of course, the formulation of the present moment is a collective endeavor that all streams of humanity have contributed to, that, in fact, every person who has ever lived has, in their own way, helped to create. Consciousness is a condition of awareness and each individual becomes aware of the realities outside of his or her own chosen spotlight for different reasons. But itcannot be denied that the world as it is today is the result of vast inequalities that have been fomented over generations. Inequalities that have resulted in the deaths of untold millions, the servitude of untold millions more and the domination of the world by a small, inbred and greedy elite. The atrocities that have come to predominate the historical record of these latter centuries of the Age of Pisces perhaps have no equal in the known history of humanity upon this planet. The world as it is today, with all of its pain, heartache and vast inequalities, is also a beautiful place, where the seeds of Africans brought to the Americas, mixed with the Aboriginals and Enslavers both, have broken ground, tilling the field of hearts the world across, as what has been done becomes clear and the ramifications of karmic repayment attend that clarification. Hip Hop and the Afro-future stand intertwined in the Present as an indicator of Past and Future, one indistinguishable from the other according to the infinite realm of probability that leaves conceptualization boundless and free to be, to become whatever we wish it to be. This is the legacy of our ancestors, and that which we leave to our posterity in our turn. The gift of life and love despite pain and heartache, and of expression ,without apology, of who we are, were and will be,far beyond what those who think they control reality could ever conceive of.

Quantum State Control Process Could Speed Up Computers and Energy Transfers

Quantum circuits could make use of transmon devices to speed up processes and allow for more precise control.

Balancing Act

Generally speaking, every task is a balance between speed and accuracy.

You can complete a task quickly at the potential cost of accuracy, or accurately at the potential cost of speed. This is one of the challenges researches studying quantum computing are facing. Harnessing quantum phenomenon to build quantum computers is tricky because tracking and controlling quantum systems in real-time is an extremely delicate task. Trying to manipulate such systems quickly can easily produce errors in the end result. Now, a team of researchers from Aalto University has developed specialize circuitry for handling this task both quickly and carefully. The results of their work were published in the journal Science Advances.

Terrific Transmon

In order to achieve this quantum balancing act, the team used a custom-designed electrical circuit called a transmon. When such a circuit is chilled to within a few thousandths of a degree above absolute zero it begins to behave like an artificial atom and exhibits unusual quantum characteristics. One such characteristic means the transmon can only have certain values of energy.

The researchers describe these “energy levels” like rungs on a ladder. You can only stand on one rung at a time and move either one up or one down. Now imagine you’re trying to carry a glass of water too. Suddenly the process is much more delicate, you would need to move slower to not spill the water. By firing two different microwave protons at the transmon simultaneously the researchers found they could make it jump more than one rung, without spilling water. In other words, the transmon exhibited a jump in energy levels previously thought impossible at a speed near the theoretical maximum.

Breakdown the Buzz

Ladders? Energy levels? We get it, there’s a lot going on here. Essentially, the ability to more precisely  control high-speed energy transfers is a promising breakthrough. Not only could the finding have many uses in the development of quantum computing and quantum simulations there may be other technical applications as well.

The speed of the energy transfer begs new questions, such as, are there fundamental limits to how fast we can charge the battery of an electric car? A future filled with rapidly charging devices sure would be nice. The new research means not only will the future be fast, it will be precise as well.

Mars One Planned to Colonize the Red Planet. Now It’s Bankrupt.

Mars One, the startup that said it was going to fund a crewed mission to Mars by turning the journey into a reality television spectacle, is bankrupt.

Mars None

Remember Mars One, the startup that said it was going to fund a crewed mission to Mars by turning the journey into a reality television spectacle? Now the company is bankrupt, according to financial documents published online.

Engadget confirmed the bankruptcy with Mars One Cofounder Bas Lansdorp, who toldthe publication that he was working “to find a solution” to the company’s financial woes — but things don’t sound hopeful for the would-be Mars colonist startup.

Broke  Planet

The news was first unveiled on Reddit, where a user posted a link to Swiss financial documents suggesting that the company was set to be liquidated.

To be technical, Mars One comprised two arms — the for-profit Mars One Ventures and the non-profit Mars One Foundation — and it’s the for-profit part that’s out of cash, according to the documents. But Lansdorp told Engadget that the non-profit portion of the project wasn’t able to act without further funding.

Still Searching

Back in 2012, Lansdortp and his associates announced a ludicrously ambitious plan to send colonists to the Red Planet — and to fund the project with a reality TV show about the selection process and on-Earth test colony, with the help of “Big Brother” producer Paul Römer.

Though the dream might be dead, it lives on at press time in the form of optimistic copy on the project’s website.

“Mars One aims to establish a permanent human settlement on Mars,” it reads. “Several unmanned missions will be completed, establishing a habitable settlement before carefully selected and trained crews will depart to Mars. Funding and implementing this plan will not be easy, it will be hard.”

New Fabric Automatically Cools or Insulates Depending on Its Environment

The first-of-its-kind fabric which cools or insulates based on its environment.

Hot New Threads

If you’re cold, put a sweater on, if you’re warm, take the sweater off. Isn’t it about time the sweater does some work for you?

Lots of gloves and hats promise high-tech thermal regulation but never, until now, has there been a fabric that changes its insulating properties based on its environment. Now, University of Maryland researchers have created a new kind of fabric which does exactly that. Their research, published in the journal Science, describes their fabric which allows more heat to pass through it in warm, moist conditions (like those of a sweaty body) and which reduces heat escape in cooler, dryer conditions.

Secret String

The secret to the fabrics behavior is in its string. The yarn is made from two different synthetic materials coated with carbon nanotubes. Because one of the materials absorbs water the other repels it the fabric warps when it comes in contact with water, like sweat. This helps open the fabric’s pores while also bringing the carbon nanotube coating closer together. The distance between nanotube strands acts sort of like an old television antenna, changing the way the fabric interacts with radiation, in this case, the heat radiating from a human body.

“The human body is a perfect radiator. It gives off heat quickly,” said Min Ouyang, a professor of physics at UMD, “For all of history, the only way to regulate the radiator has been to take clothes off or put clothes on. But this fabric is a true bidirectional regulator.”

In True Future Fashion

There is still more work to be done before the fabric can be commercialized, but according to researchers, the process wouldn’t be difficult. The materials involved in making the base fibers are already readily available and the carbon nanotube coating can be applied during any standard dying process.

Even so, the fabric may be worth the wait. The process by which its pores are adjusted to the environment is so quick it could be heating a person up or cooling them down before they even know it. It may mean a future without intraoffice thermostat wars, and that’s a future worth waiting for.

The Air Force Wants to Arm Fighter Jets With Laser Weapons

The U.S. Air Force wants to equip its fighter jets with defensive laser weapons as soon as the early 2020s.

Laser Jets

In 2017, the U.S. Navy revealed its the Laser Weapons System (LaWS), which the media referred to as the world’s first active laser weapon — a futuristic turret mounted on a transport vessel.

Now the U.S. Air Force wants to jump on the trend as well: it wants to equip its fighter jets — including the F-35 — with laser weapons by the early 2020s, The National Interest reports.

Project SHIELD

Earlier this month, the Pentagon released its 2019 Missile Defense Review, a document outlining its strategic plans on how to keep the U.S. safe from enemy missiles. The Review included plans for equipping F-35 fighter jets with lasers that could shoot down enemy missiles in mid-air.

Laser weapon technology is not new to the Air Force. The Air Force Research Lab has been leading the development effort for a number of years from the Kirtland Air Force Base. Its focus: “high power electromagnetics, weapons modeling and simulation, and directed energy and electro-optics,” according to the base’s official government website.

The Research Lab has been conducting test-fires from the ground and is ramping up for upcoming tests that will take place during flight, according to The National Interest.

Laser Vision

One major program called Self-Protect High Energy Laser Demonstrator (SHIELD) is looking to give fighter jets the ability to take down enemy aircraft by heating them up and incinerating them with a powerful on-board laser.

A major advantage that laser systems could have over conventional weaponry, according to Wired, is the fact that enemy targets could be taken out without completely destroying them or risking civilian lives on the ground below.

Russia Plans to Cut Itself Off From the Global Internet

Some time in the next month, Russia will briefly disconnect the nation's internet to make sure local networks could withstand a hostile takeover.

Turn It Off

Sometime before April, the Russian government plans to briefly disconnect the entire country from the internet.

The brief shutdown is part of an ongoing effort to bolster Russia’s cybersecurity against foreign attacks that would cut it off from the rest of the world, according to ZDNet — and it’s a sobering reminder that in a fractious era for international relations, a global internet isn’t a guarantee.

Turn It On Again

The push for the big experimental shutdown comes from proposed updates to Russian telecom laws. The Russian government announced in 2017 that it would handle up to 95 percent of all internet traffic locally — that is, independent from the rest of the world — by 2020.

The upcoming shutdown will test just how resilient those local networks are and how much internet traffic can slip through the cracks. A new law will also direct Russian internet providers to direct all traffic through government-approved servers to further enforce content bans, according to ZDNet.

Building Barriers

The law has the full backing of President Putin and may be partially inspired by the Great Firewall of China, the colloquial name for the country’s censored internet.

So if the internet stays up and running, Russia is taking steps to make sure it’s filtering out forbidden content. And if Russia gets cut off, well, they’ll still be able to log on to their local internet and surf away, just so long as they don’t try to look at porn.

Scientists Are Using AI to Find Hotel Rooms Being Used for Child Sex Trafficking

An AI system can scan photos of child trafficking victims in hotel rooms and determine where they were taken based on the furniture in the room.

Hands Together

Often, child sex traffickers reach out to would-be clients with photos of their victims in the hotel rooms in which they’re being held.

In order to help find and rescue those kidnapped children, engineers from Washington University developed an artificial intelligence system that can recognize features of a hotel room from a photo and identify where it may have been taken — potentially giving investigators new leads to fight child trafficking, according to Reuters.

Forensic Analysis

So far, the app has stayed out of public hands and is used exclusively by law enforcement or groups like the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children (NCMEC) so that sensitive information like the photos of trafficking victims don’t spread across the internet.

The idea is to flood the AI algorithm with hotel room photos so that it could recognize the background of a trafficking victim’s photo. Some features are easy to learn, as hotel chains may standardize their furniture.

The AI system “learns a set of filters,” Abby Stylianou, an engineer who worked on the project told Reuters. “Here’s what a headboard looks like if it’s from this hotel. Here’s what a lamp looks like in that hotel.”

Behind Closed Doors

Since 2016, the engineers’ system has collected some 50,000 crowdsourced photos. They decided that the AI system was ready to be tested about eight months ago, according to Reuters, at which point it was shipped out to NCMEC. But so far, no one has shared whether or not the tool actually led to any successful rescues.

“We’ve had a couple [cases] that have given us leads and information,” Staca Shehan, an executive director at NCMEC, told Reuters. “There’s a lot of contributing factors that go into a recovery of a child.”

Expert: AR Will Let Hackers Steal “Deep Psychological Data”

Thought Theft

If augmented reality becomes a part of our daily lives, the data it collects about you will become valuable: an incredibly detailed psychological portrait, and one that’s prone to terrifying exploitation if it falls into the wrong hands.

“You are always worried about bad actors with technology and your data,” said Paula Goldman, a VP at Omidyar Network, a firm that advises on ethically-sound technological development, in a new interview with the Wall Street Journal. “With AR, it is incredibly scary: the kind of data that can be collected, how you react to what you’re seeing, deep psychological data.”

Eyes Up Here

We’ve been told for years that AR is the future — a prediction which, except for Pokémon Go, has so far fallen flat on its face — and if it comes true, it could herald horrifying new invasions of privacy.

The idea is that data from an AR headset could be exponentially more detailed than today’s internet usage warehouses, especially if it merges with tech from already-available biometric wearables, and revealing in totalitarian new ways. The data it collects from you could be everything from how you react to workout prompts to where your eyes flit first when you open your fridge — or even your physiological response to advertisements and porn.

Snow Cash

While the Journal‘s filing is mostly a rundown of potential applications involving the future of AR, the threat of its data exploitation looms large.

The most bullish AR extremists think we’re gonna have computers in contact lenses in all of our heads one day. If that ends up being the case, we should think hard about the data it generates will mean to criminals — or to the mega-corporations, like Facebook and Google, that we already trust with our most intimate information.

Google Is Rolling out AR Navigation for Its Maps App

Google is letting a select few users test out a new AR navigation feature for its Maps app, providing a glimpse of the future of navigation.

Roll Out

Google Maps is finally getting a previously teased augmented reality upgrade.

In May, Google announced plans to add an AR navigation feature to its Maps app. Nine months later, the feature is now rolling out to a select group of Google users — giving the world its first glimpse at the likely future of getting around.

Tech Test

On Sunday, the Wall Street Journal published a story detailing reporter David Pierce’s experience testing out an early version of Maps’ AR feature.

In it, he notes how the feature added a layer of graphics over the “real world” as viewed through the camera in his smartphone. These graphics ranged from large arrows pointing in the direction Pierce needed to walk to text that appeared to hover over the sidewalk, letting him know how many steps he needed to take until his next turn.

“It was as if Maps had drawn my directions onto the real world,” he wrote, “though nobody else could see them.”

Baby Steps

According to Pierce, Google only plans to make the current version of the AR navigation feature available to “a few Local Guides, who are the service’s most dedicated reviewers and users.”

The rest of the world won’t have access to the feature until Google is satisfied with it, and there’s no telling when that might be.

Still, it appears Google is committed to making AR a part of its future. And given that the company is such a huge presence in the present, that means AR will very likely be a part of our future, too.

Trump Orders Federal Agencies to “Prioritize AI”

On Monday, U.S. President Donald Trump will reportedly sign the American AI Initiative, an executive order designed to shape the future of AI in the nation.

AI on the Future

The United States is arguably the world leader in artificial intelligence, and President Donald Trump wants to keep it that way.

According to multiple outlets, Trump plans to sign an executive order called the American AI Initiative on Monday afternoon. The order will reportedly direct federal government agencies to dedicate more resources and investment toward AI — but not everyone is convinced it’ll have the desired impact.

Key Pillars

During a conference call with press, a senior administration official noted that the order will include five “key pillars” on which agencies should focus their AI efforts.

These pillars include the creation of a set of ethical guidelines for AI development and implementation, as well as the prioritization of AI research and development. The administration also wants agencies to make it easier for AI researchers to access federal data, create fellowships and apprenticeships that will help workers prepare for automation, and find ways to collaborate with other nations without compromising U.S. “values and interests.”

“AI is something that touches every aspect of people’s lives,” a senior administration official said during the call, according to Reuters. “What this initiative attempts to do is to bring all those together under one umbrella and show the promise of this technology for the American people.”

Big Talk

This is the Trump administration’s biggest public statement on AI thus far, but it’s just the first step toward cementing America’s place as the world leader in AI — and it might not be enough, according to Harvard professor Jason Furman, who helped draft the Obama administration’s report on AI.

“The Administration’s American AI Initiative includes all of the right elements, the critical test will be to see if they follow through in a vigorous manner,” Furman told The Verge. “The plan is aspirational with no details and is not self-executing.”

Apple Runs A “Black Site” That a Worker Called “Dehumanizing”

Anonymous contractors at Apple's so-called

Back Door Only

Six miles from Apple’s shiny new campus, which was heralded as a glowing beacon of the Silicon Valley tech industry’s wealth, the company also operates a smaller facility for contractors who work on Apple Maps.

Inside, the conditions are so grim and secretive that many of the contractors, who tend to quit or get fired before the end of their contracts, refer to it as a “black site” kept separate from the rest of Apple’s more outwardly-glamorous operations, according to Bloomberg.

“Being monitored like that is super dehumanizing and terrifying,” one former contractor told the magazine.

Two Degrees Removed

A number of those contractors spoke to Bloomberg on the condition of anonymity. Many were hired by outside agencies such as Apex Systems, which manages day-to-day operations at the facility, where employees were asked to use the back door and to walk several blocks away before hailing a ride home.

While they were there, the contractors typically double-checked Apple Maps’ systems to make sure roads were mapped correctly, and fielded complaints about inaccuracies. But their managers often enforced draconian policies, breaking up water cooler chats and forbidding conversations with full-time Apple staff.

“It was made pretty plain to us that we were at-will employees and they would fire us at any time,” one contractor told Bloomberg.

Revolving Door

Many of the contractors, who tended to be hired straight out of college, eager for what they thought would be a promising career at Apple, were fired for not being productive enough. Others quit outright.

“There was a culture of fear among the contractors which I got infected by and probably spread,” that same anonymous contractor told Bloomberg.

Apple’s internal review of operations at the black site found that worker conditions met their standards. However, Bloomberg reported, the anonymous contractors who spoke up agreed that their lives improved after leaving Apple.

Dating App for Smart Fridges Matches Singles Based on Leftovers

Refrigerdating

Electronics giant Samsung has launched a dating app called “Refrigerdating” that runs on smart refrigerators — and connects eligible singles based on the compatibility of their food choices.

“We hope people can meet under more honest or transparent circumstances with the help of the contents of the fridge, because that can tell you a lot about the personality,” Samsung PR manager Elin Axelsson told CNET.

Hacksaw Fridge

The app is available on the Samsung Family Hub Refrigerator, which costs $4,000 — so even if the food algorithm isn’t perfect, Refrigerdating will at least connect mates in the same socio-economic sector.

CNET describes the app as working much like Tinder, giving lonely hearts the opportunity to swipe right or left on the contents of their peers’ fridges.

Stunting

If the idea sounds silly, it could be because the app is likely a marketing stunt.

“Let’s be honest: this service isn’t strictly altruistic,” wrote Digital Trends. “Samsung is using it to promote its Family Hub line of smart fridges, and you’ll need to own one in order to participate.”
