The Avant-garde in Theory and Practice – Video

The Avant-garde in Theory and Practice
At the start of the 20th century, art became inexorably, but anxiously, linked to politics. Artists renounced traditional criteria of aesthetic beauty and skill to establish a whole new set of ideas about what art should do. Art should transform! Art should critique! Art should inspire! This course will trace this process by asking: what does it mean to be avant-garde? We will examine three central strategies as they unfold from the 1910s to the beginning of World War II: negation, critique, and construction. Looking at Italian Futurism, German Expressionism, Dada, Surrealism, Russian Constructivism, and Productivism, we will pair close readings of foundational theoretical texts, artists #39; writings, and manifestos with rigorous visual analyses of artworks. This will allow us to inquire into definitions of the avant-garde across history, prompting us to ask other questions, such as: what kinds of social relations do works of art produce? What is the relationship between form and content, intention and effect? Why do certain artistic goals and ambitions arise in a particular historical period? Are these models still relevant today? And whether yes or no, do these ideals persist today nonetheless? thebrooklyninstitute.comFrom:ajayc42Views:2 0ratingsTime:01:31More inPeople Blogs

CS Visits Bad Robot to Take a Star Trek Into Darkness

"Are you ready?" That's what it says on a small plaque at the front door of J.J. Abrams' Santa Monica-based Bad Robot Productions. The building, deceptively ordinary from the outside, feels from the inside as though it's equal parts office, workshop and top secret military compound. This week, ComingSoon.net was among the first members of the press ever invited inside to take an early look at ...

artnet Auctions Presents the 80’s Graffiti Sale

Live sale on artnet Auctions from December 13 through 20, 2012

New York, NY and Berlin, Germany (PRWEB) December 14, 2012

The sale features one of Keith Harings iconic subway drawings, a set of works the artist created from 1980 to 1985. Haring executed these works in chalk on unused subway advertising panels covered in black matte paper. Untitled (Robots, Figures, and Angels), estimated at US$75,000 to US$95,000, was taken from New York Citys 59th Street Station; the piece demonstrates the fusion of Harings unique style with the larger Street Art movement of the 1980s.

Another highlight of the sale is a mixed media on museum board work by notorious Graffiti artist Rammellzee. Untitled, estimated at US$50,000 to US$70,000, is based off of the artists theory of Gothic Futurism. This theory is detailed in Rammellzees treatise, Iconic Panzerisms, which describes the symbolic warfare of rules prescribed by the alphabet and the revision of language in society at large.

The sale also includes an early Futura 2000 spray paint on canvas from 1985 entitled Cerise Clock. The work, estimated at US$20,000 to US$30,000, exemplifies the artists pioneering approach to Graffiti Art. The chaotic arrangements of contrasting color, abstracted forms, and dynamic shapes echo the works Futura 2000 executed across subway trains in the late 1970s.

The 80s Graffiti Sale is live on artnet Auctions from December 13 through 20, 2012, and on view here.

Just teach them in English!

Azly Rahman It is an attempt to self-fulfil a prophecy that the rural children, especially the Malays, cannot be challenged and must continue to be given easy passes through social promotion. The refusal to teach Mathematics and Science in English is not just an ideological position but an idiotic one as well. Red Pill, Blue Pill: Is the Universe Just a Giant Computer Simulation?

I’ve started making my way (skeptically) through Ray Kurzweil’s How to Create a Mind, and at the recommendation of a friend, I’ve also started keeping tabs on KurzweilAI, a Kurzweil-blessed site devoted to futurism coverage — everything from the latest 3D printer tech and anti-cancer drugs to brain-based pacemakers and “exploding killer plasmonic nanobubbles.” This morning, I noticed a story ...

Spoek Mathambo: Afro-futurism's heir apparent

The Future Sound of Mzansi is a compilation album of rarities, remixes and collaborations that will be distributed across the continent.

THE FUTURE SOUND OF MZANSI Spoek Mathambo (Sony Music)

If Spoek Mathambo ever tells you to bet R200 on a racehorse, put down R600. In an April 2009 interview he told me: We are trying to push ourselves into developing an honest and authentic voice in sound that really represents us as postmodern, post-apartheid, post-everything poster boys raised on a steady diet of TV, internet and Chicken Licken.

Mathambo is a highly intelligent overachiever. It is only three-and-a-half years later and he has not only developed that honest and authentic voice without becoming too earnest, but has also moved post all those post-things. This year has been a phenomenal one. He has signed with Sub Pop, the label that became famous for recording Kurt Cobain and his band Nirvana. With his excellent, eclectic dance-rock-electro album Father Creeper, Spoek has managed to create a thrilling meltdown of global styles, according to the Observer. It has received rave reviews around the world, as have his energetic concerts.

Acer Iconia W700-6465

Editor's Rating: User Rating: Good: The Acer Iconia W700 can work as a tablet or a small desktop, and it has a high-res screen and excellent battery life. Bad: The non-adjustable stand limits viewing angles, and you'll need an external mouse or touch pad for efficient Windows navigation. Bottom Line: One of the only Core i5 slate-style Windows 8 systems we've seen, the Acer Iconia W700 asks few ...

JEFF_CAREY Interrupt-Decay Chop – Video

JEFF_CAREY Interrupt-Decay Chop
jeffcarey.foundation-one.org soundcloud.com Using a gaming keypad and joystick to control his laptop Carey #39;s sonic output covers the range of feedback, high intensity electrical fields, fragmentary cut up information overload, detailed micro-sonic constellations, spacious shifts in timbre, and chunky riff-like blasts of bit crushed saxophone futurism (saxophone not included). The CD, like his performances, is an engagement in high risk, physically driven, elastic solo instrumentalism: Logical monologues with no safety net, no overdubs, and no backing vocals. Interrupt-Decay, Jeff Carey, 2012, 10 tracks, 48 min CWnil 8033600649 American composer Jeff Carey #39;s music is a blend of fixed-media composition and electro-instrumentalism -- the music of the visceral, ecstatic, and electric moment. His inventions of fluid sound are in an ever changing state: a mobile moves in the wind, changes shape, and is in constant renewal. Listeners are invited to explore an abstract sonic universe and engage in a world inspired by fictional cosmology, code breaking, and mathematical conundrums.From:rarefaViews:2 1ratingsTime:03:41More inMusic

Joel Achenbach: Global Trends 2030: Megatrends vs. game-changers

This is a town full of reports, some of them auguring deep into a single topic and some of them broader and more comprehensive. Yesterday we saw the publication of an unusually sweeping document called Global Trends 2030 , produced by the National Intelligence Council, which answers to the Director of National Intelligence. Poke around the document a bit and you'll see that it was written ...

Oscar Niemeyer: an appreciation

Our critic salutes Oscar Niemeyer, the visionary Brazilian architect who died last week, aged 104 Oscar Niemeyer was brilliant, energetic, ruthless, by all accounts charming – and extraordinarily long-lived. He died last week aged 104 , a bridge across time to the now-historic modern movement in architecture. He was the master of the curve, the architect who could command tonnes of concrete and ...
