Four of the biggest names in tech and the internet have joined forces to fight terrorism right at its online roots. Microsoft, Facebook, Youtube, and Twitter have created the Global Internet Forum to Counter Terrorism.

Terrorist organizations, such as ISIS, use social media as a tool for recruitment, and often those platforms are heavily criticized for theirinadvertent facilitation of such activity. As a response, Twitter has released a blog post that goes over the goals of the new forum, saying, We take these issues very seriously, and each of our companies have developed policies and removal practices that enable us to take a hard line against terrorist or violent extremist content on our hosted consumer services.

The forum will help these social media companies tocooperate more easily with each other as well as with governmental agencies, smaller companies, and non-governmental organizations with an interest in battling terrorism.

Assessing the successfulness of existing anti-terrorist recruitment efforts is difficult, if not impossible. However, with greater cooperation, we can ensure that methods can be researched and deployed on a larger scale to maximize effectiveness.

Fighting terrorism has long been more than simply a matter of boots on the ground. With rapid technological development, the battleis getting even more complicated. We can only hope this initiativecan help to mitigate the damage.

Germany Wants to Crack Down on the Digital World’s Lack of Regulation – Futurism

At the Dual Year Germany Mexico event in Mexico City earlier this month, German Chancellor Angela Merkel addressedthe lack of regulation within the transglobal digital world, pointing outthe relative freedom companies like Facebook, Google, and Amazon enjoy in comparison to those involved in areas such as finance or trade.

Merkel stated that the world needs to introduce an international policy to govern Industry 4.0, a term used by German politiciansto describe thegrowth of the Internet of Things (IoT), smart devices, and automation. She argued that the need is pressing asthe disparate national policies currently in place could prove disastrous at any moment.

We still have no international rules, Merkel explained during her visit. Some provider could emerge thats an island, and from which things could be done, relevant to security, that could destroy an entire system. On this question of the rules-based handling of it, were still right at the start.

Europe has already begun to take serious action against the misuse of data, now the worlds most popular resource. European antitrust officialsjust fined Google a record $2.7 billionfor skewing results in their own favor. Meanwhile, Germany has been spearheading the prosecution of digital data firms, recently introducing a 9th amendment to the German Competition Act (ARC) that makes it easierto fine digital companies.

However, Merkel has no plans to wait for something to be done on a global scale. Her goal is to lay the groundwork for global regulation at a G20 summitin July, working out a consistent policy on how to approach the possible violations of security, privacy, and coercion enacted by internet behemoths.

As Merkel noted during her visit to Mexico,ensuring the security of the digital world will require international collaboration, so hopefully all of the countriesin the G20 will be open to working together to that end when they meet inHamburg in a few short weeks.

Volvo Is Rivaling Tesla With Their Own Driverless Car – Futurism

After a recent announcement that Volvo will attempt to challenge Tesla in the electric vehicle market, the car manufacturer hasnow also made a gambit to join the autonomous vehicle competition. The Swedish car giant has teamed up with Nvidia for the project, specifically utilizing Nvidias Drive PX, which is capable of processing data from 12video cameras as well as lidar, radar, and ultrasonic sensors.

This news comes in the wake of an announcement from the CEOof Volvo, Hakan Samuelsson, thatthe company intends to square off with Tesla at the expense of diesel engines.Samuelsson explained in an email to Reuters,We have to recognize that Tesla has managed to offer such a car for which people are lining up. In this area, there should also be space for us, with high quality and attractive design.

The software that will govern the driverless system is provided by Autoliv, who Volvo ispartnering with under the new name Zenuity for this venture. Although some parts of the collaboration will be exclusive for Volvo, other aspects that Autoliv will develop couldbe sold to other car makers.

Volvo and Nvidia have teamed up before for Volvos autonomous car pilot program, Drive Me, but this the first time they have teamed up for a commercially available vehicle, which the companyaims to launchin 2021.

The ever growing hype around driverless car technology which has the potential to make our roads safer and fasterhas encouraged several other notable players in the motor vehicle and computerindustries to start developing their own variants of the technology. Volvo is another racehorse in stable of big-name, big-money ventures.

Also joining the race for the future of transport are: Tesla, who arguably pioneereddriverless technology and have a potential industry changer in their hotly anticipated Model 3; Google, who have also entered the fray by launching as Volvo did a separate company called Google Auto LLCto develop their driverless cars; and Ford, who have goneas far to test their cars in snowy conditions last year.

Wyndham Lewis was a painter, poet, publisher and picker of fights. No target was too grand or too trivial: sentimental Victorians and the modern man of government; shark art dealers and the atrocious Royal Academy; compilers of honours lists and editors of literary reviews; thin flapper girls and the fat Belgian bumpkins of Peter Paul Rubens; men who read detective stories and women who liked bowl-of-apple paintings by second-rate Czannes. People who lived in Putney.

The poet Edith Sitwell, who sat for an unfinished portrait by Lewis, was one of his most hoary, tried and reliable enemiesI do not think I should be exaggerating if I described myself as Miss Edith Sitwells favourite enemy. Sitwell was a fierce opponent. When worsted in argument, she throws Queensberry Rules to the winds. She once called me Percy. He had been born Percy Wyndham Lewis (18821957), but was Wyndham by the time he was old enough for Rugby and the Slade.

His best enemies were the Bloomsbury Set, those Fitzroy tinkerers and conscientious objectors, who spent the war pruning trees and planting gooseberries in Sussex, while he watched rats bicker for cheese at Passchendaele. The Bloomsbury grievance kept him going for decades. Roger Fry, director of the Omega Workshops, was a Pecksniff, a hypocrite, a shabby trickster, whose chairs stuck to the seat of ones trousers. The critic Raymond Mortimer was a middle aged man-milliner. Virginia Woolf was a timid peeper at the lives of others; her A Room of Ones Own a highbrow feminist fairyland. A Lewis review never failed to give Woolf one of her headaches. Ive taken the arrow of W.L. to my heart, she wrote after one attack in 1934. She was decapitated by him in 1938, and awaited his poisoned dart in 1940.

He styled himself The Enemy and imagined swaggering out in a Stetson, a cigar between his teeth, swinging bandoliers loaded with vitriol. After breakfast raw meat, blood oranges, a shot of vodka he talked of taking pot shots at the sub-Sitwells and sheep in Woolfes clothing of literary London.

A picker, too, of the wrong side: Hitler in Germany, Mussolini in Italy, Franco in Spain. Having fought in the first world war, he didnt want a second and thought these men were the ones to stop it. That lonely old volcano of the Right, W.H. Auden called him. Nothing fired him up like a quarrel, a squabble, a skirmish. But war was another matter.

In this, the centenary year of the Battle of Passchendaele, the battle-bog in which Lewis saw his fellow gunners shelled and drowned, the Imperial War Museum North has mounted a superb retrospective of the artists life and work. It makes no apology or excuse for him. The exhibition opens with broadsides from choice enemies. A malicious, thwarted and dangerous man, said Sacheverell Sitwell, brother of Edith. A curious mixture of insolence and nervousness, said E.M. Forster. We do not have to like him for his writing, painting, pamphleteering, to think hes worth remembering.

The war, wrote Lewis, was a landmark as tremendous as the birth of Christ: We say pre-war and post-war, rather as we say BC or AD. Pre-war he had been a troublemaker. He had fallen in with Augustus John at the Slade and travelled to Holland, France, Germany and Spain on his allowance. He returned in 1908 with an exotic wardrobe, an absurd haircut and a moustache. He fired his first shots, made early enemies: I am all in favour of a young man behaving rudely to everyone in sight. This may not be good for the young man, but its good for everyone else.

England was in a somnolent state, still mooning over the pale aestheticism of Oscar Wilde and Kate Greenaways syrupy infants. In July 1914, he launched Blast a battering ram of a magazine and with it the vorticist manifesto a mass of excited thinking, of wild and whirling words. Vorticism was a queasy, uneasy art. Paintings were tipped on their axes, the viewer left motion-sick and dizzy. Bodies and landscapes were angular and abstracted. The mathematician Euclid was one hero, Andrea Mantegna, with his crisp, etch-like outlines, another.

Eleven artists, among them the poet Ezra Pound and sculptor Henri Gaudier-Brzeska, signed the vorticist manifesto. Lewis would later claim the movement was all down to a very vigorous One.

Vorticism was written up as an English off-shoot of Italian futurism, but Lewis was against Marinetti and his gang. He wouldnt dignify them with the name futurist. They were Milanese automobilists obsessed with speeding cars and aeroplanes. When Marinetti lectured in Bond Street, Lewis went to heckle. Never had he heard such a lot of hot, noisy air: a day of attack upon the Western Front, with all the heavies hammering together, right back to the horizon was nothing to it.

Blast and vorticism had short lives. Wars have made it impossible to get on with anything for very long, but I am glad that I got in, at the very beginning, a resounding oath. The blast was heard beyond Londons squares and salons. Drilling his squad at Mentsham Camp, Lewis was called over by the adjutant and sergeant-major. Bombardier, said the adjutant, what is all this futurism about? They thought it a great joke. Was this funny gunner really the revolutionary they had read about in the papers? In his war memoir, Blasting and Bombardiering, Lewis noted that the sergeant-major was killed within a fortnight of being sent to the Front.

The war was a stupid nightmare. He had a row with the war artist Sir William Orpen, who insisted: war is hell. Lewis wouldnt accept this infernal clich: I said it was Goya, it was Delacroix all scooped out and very El Greco. But hell, no.

He did not paint the war like Goya, but in the fidgety, jagged style of vorticism. It was right for the pitted, splintered, broken landscape of France, and the shell-shocked, sleepless men who fought there. He could not, he said, have begun to paint a milkmaid in a field of buttercups, but when Mars with his mailed finger showed me a shell-crater and a skeleton, with a couple of shivered tree-stumps behind it, I was still in my abstract element. In paintings like Shell-Humping (1918), Officers and Signallers (1918) and A Battery Shelled (1919) the men arent quite human. They are metallic and riveted with howitzer arms and bayonet legs.

The war ended but Lewis carried on fighting with pen and in paint, prolific and furious. He wrote 50 books and left more than 100 paintings and 1,000 drawings. Even after he lost his sight in his late sixties, he wrote polemics by dictaphone. Blindness was like being pushed into an unlighted room, the door banged and locked for ever.

A Self Portrait of 1932 has him scowling under a hat. Who next for a blast? A Woolf, a Sitwell, an Academy stooge? Rage made him bitter and isolated. He was often wrong, occasionally brilliant and always his own worst enemy.

He was the glue. It will be difficult for ETH to recover and the entire crypto sphere is in big trouble.

Ethereum is currently the second most valuable cryptocurrency in the world. Itis also arguably the hottest cryptocurrency in relative terms, up as much as 4,000 percent this year alone and drawing interest from elites all over the world. At least partially driving this is the fact that other technologies are being built off of Ethereum, whichseems poised to become the blockchainof choice around the world.

The price of Ethereum, despite having risen so much this year thus far, remains volatile, and it was already experiencing a decline yesterday when the news about Buterins death hit the internet. By the days end, about $4 billion dropped from its total market value.

Of course, Buterin wasnt actually dead:

If you feel like youve seen that move before, you may be remembering Julian Assanges livestream dispelling rumors of his death the same way back in January.

Despite Sundays fake news emergency, Ethereum is still trading more than30 times higher today than it was in early January, so in some ways this was just a blip in the cryptocurrencys progress. On the other hand, theres little doubt that fake news manipulation has showcased a weakness in Ethereum. Buterin is the well-known face of Ethereum, and it seems that although the cryptocurrency exists independent of any control by him, right now its health is influenced by him to some extent.

Ultimately, this story highlights that all cryptocurrencies are inherently volatile, at least for now. On June 21, for example, a single multi-million dollar sell order caused a flash crash in Ethereum, a symptom of a young and underdeveloped infrastructure. This problem will be repaired over time as the cryptocurrency market evolves, regardless of what happens (or doesnt happen) to founders.

This episode alsoprovide a cautionary tale about the power of fake news. However, that particular problem certainly isnt limited to the cryptocurrency world its an epidemic everywhere, from climate change to politics and election newsto the search for life. Perhaps a strategic combination of critical thinking and technologywill be the answer to the fake news problem; for now, however, were glad both Buterin and Ethereum are alive and well.

In Brief A system of drones has been developed to help quell the loss of Earth's trees. The system can help plant almost 100,000 trees per day.

The Earth is rapidly losing its forests at a rate muchfaster than humans can replant. Exact figures vary, but according to Scientific American, most analysts attribute upwards of 15 percent [of global carbon emissions] to deforestation. This means that by clearing or burning the Earths forests, we are directly contributing to the rapidly increasing rate of climate change.

One Australian engineer is enlisting technology to fight the battle against deforestation. Dr. Susan Graham has helped develop a pair of drones that can help mitigate some of the damage by planting trees at a rate that far outpaces what is possible to do by hand.

The first dronescans an area of land, searching for an ideal plot to plant. This drone helps to make a 3D map of the area and then special algorithms are employed to find the best places to plant. The second drone then takes that map and its payload of up to 150 seed pods and gets to work shooting the seeds into the ground. Lauren Fletcher, the CEO of BioCarbon Engineering, said: Were firing at one a second, which means a pair of operators will be able to plant nearly 100,000 trees per day 60 teams like this will get us to a billion trees a year.

Drones get a lot of press for their delivery capabilities, but Amazon packages arent the only way to utilize this technology. There are lifesaving drones that can beat EMTs to emergencies, drones that could help to supportdeclining bee populations, and even drones to stand in for backup dancers. Ethereum Goes Up

MGT Capital, the company run by John McAfee, said it would start to mine Ethereum the bitcoin rival that has surged nearly 4,000% this year in its latest bid to turn a profit. Although ethereumhas since dropped in value, its an alteration that was predicted by experts, given its unprecedentedly excessive rise. And as this latest announcement highlights, tech experts and investors alike are confident that its price will soon surge again.

MGT, which is publicly traded over the counter, has pitched itself to investors mostly as a cybersecurity company. Cybersecurity is where McAfee made his mark as the founder of the antivirus company that bears his name.

But McAfee has more recently started to tout cryptocurrencies. He said last month that investments in bitcoin would help put MGT back in the black by the end of the year.

Ethereum is like bitcoin in that it can be mined by computers that solve complex computations. MGT said Friday that it reached an agreement with Bit5ive LLC to buy up to 60 graphics-processor-based mining computers to help mine for ether.

We are more convinced each day of the growth and value of digital currencies, and our company is uniquely positioned to be a leading provider of processing power to relevant blockchains, McAfee said in the statement.

McAfees foray into the cryptocurrency space comes when others have been sounding the alarm after a huge run-up in prices.

In early June, billionaire Mark Cuban said it was evident that bitcoin was a bubble, tweeting, When everyone is bragging about how easy they are making $=bubble.

Days later, Goldman Sachs warned that bitcoin was looking heavy and that a drop to between $2,330 and $1,915 a coin was looking likely. Bitcoin put in a low of $2,076 just a day later after the scaling debate came back into focus as the bitcoin-mining firm Bitmain outlined its contingency plan for if a hard fork were to occur. Bitcoin has recouped those losses and now trades at $2,708.

Ethereum is up by 3,964% in 2017. As for MGT, its stock is up by 42% year-to-date.

In Brief Engineering firm ThyssenKrup has just finished the first tests of its Maglev elevator that operates horizontally and vertically without cables. This in-building hyperloop could change high-rise building design and cut down wait time for elevators.

Engineering firm ThyssenKrup has created a Maglev elevator that operates horizontally as well as vertically, and without cables. The firm has completed the first public tests of the technology in a dedicated tower. Named Multi, the experimental elevator trades in cables for rails and magnetic fields. The fields push the cabins along the rails which work like linear motors, much like an in-building hyperloop.

The cabins can rotate to shift a cabin to the side when it stops at a floor. This allows more cabins to use the system seamlessly without getting in each others way. The cabins will also be able to plan their routes, which will reduce wait timesand prevent in-shaft traffic jams.

This tech may also solve an ongoing issue facing designers of modern high-rise buildings. If youve ever been in a very tall building, youve probably noticed that youre forced to take elevators from different banks to reach the highest floors. This is because standard cable elevator designs can only safely rise about 1,600 feet per single continuous stretch. The Multi system would put an end to that, making more space and style options possible.

ThyssenKrup has already signed up its first customer: the East Side Tower building planned for Berlin will feature the Multi. Before you get too excited, though, realize that the price tag of the system will probably keep it from becoming the new standard anytime soon:it costs up to five times as much as a standard elevator system. And, theres no up and out button the cabins will rely on the rails.

However, besides these doubts, Naval Ravikant, an investor and the CEO and co-founder of Angel List, has come to Bitcoins defense on Twitter:

Claiming that Bitcoin could free humanity from oligarchs and tyrants Ravikant asserts that the quick rise in value that is making many wary of Bitcoin is just superficial. But how could a cryptocurrency free humanity of tyranny?

Well, through the potential power of blockchain. The blockchain ledger, which includes cryptocurrencies, essentially streamline the financial world. They eliminate a need for a middle-man, so-to-speak, so institutions like banks would no longer be necessary for a society based in blockchain. And while that might seem like a small difference, think about how many different aspects of a modern society rely on even the simplest financial transactions.

Are Ravikants opinions of Bitcoin extreme or off-base? Its impossible to say, as some consider the cryptocurrency to be a bubble about to burst, but the potential blockchain itself has to change the way that societies operate is very real. Its not just a passing phase, as many thought with the emergence of seemingly joke cryptocurrencies like Dogecoin. It is something that, if adopted on a wider scale which has already begun in countries like Japan the authorities whocurrently control consumption and financial transactions would no longer be relevant.

Money makes the world go round. Peace, suffering, conflict, power; so much of modern life centers around transactions. From information to finances, all of these transactions rely on some middle step, some outside authority or management. This has made countless people over the years dependent on these outside power structures, creating control and dominance differences that have the potential to create what could be construed as tyranny.

Now, this might be pushing current boundaries by saying that Bitcoin, just one specific blockchain, could make such a big change. So, one some level, Ravikant is stretching this. Bitcoin itself is still relatively unstable and there is some possibility that its most recent rise in value is a bubble that is certain to eventually burst. It is only one of multiple cryptocurrencies and blockchains, none of which are close to completely taking over any economic structures yet. However, if blockchains potential coupled with Bitcoins popularity eventually leads to such a revolution, perhaps tyranny and oligarchs would truly become obsolete.

A video was posted by a self-describedmember of Anonymous a loosely associated international hacktivist group who claimed that they hadexclusive evidence from NASA saying that we are on the verge of discovering alien life. The person in the Guy Fawkes mask with the digitally-altered voice goes even further, claimingthat theyre not just talking about microbial life, but advanced, space-faring civilizations.

Unfortunately, the facts just do not measure up to these claims which were taken out of context from actual hearings. Keeping in mind thatNASA is certainly making significant progress in discovering life on other planets,The Washington Post decided to do some actual journalism and reach out to NASA for a quote on the fake news. While were excited about the latest findings from NASAs Kepler space observatory, theres no pending announcement regarding Extra-Terrestrial life, a spokesman for the agency wrote.

One of the quotes pulled for the video was said by NASAs Thomas Zurbuchen during a congressional hearing back in April (the entire hearing is publicly available). Zurbuchen did indeed state We are on the verge of making one of the most profound, unprecedented discoveries in history, but he was discussing the discovery of possible habitable planets around distant suns, as well asorganic chemicals being found on a moon of Saturn.

SpaceX Just Transformed Space Flight, Launching Two Rockets in 48 Hours – Futurism

In Brief A historic weekend "doubleheader" for Elon Musk ended Sunday afternoon after SpaceX launched two payloads into space within 48 hours of each other. The initial launch was also a first for the country of Bulgaria, which launched a telecommunications satellite.

Elon Musks SpaceX took ascheduling delay and turned it into a historic opportunity: as the result of postponing the launch of a Bulgarian satellite from Monday to Friday of last week, SpaceX had two Falcon 9 rocket launches within 48 hours of each other. Fridays BulgariaSat-1 launch happened from NASAs Kennedy Space Center in Florida. The second one carrying a payload of 10 new satellites from Virginia-based telecommunications company Iridiumlifted off Sunday afternoon from the Vandenberg Air Force Base in California.

The two back-to-backlaunches a first for SpaceX were made possible by its reusable rocket technology. Fridays BulagariaSat-1 launch was only the second time the space venture company successfully reused a rocket booster, while Sundays marked the third. In a series of tweets after the launch, Muskseemed pleased with how far the reusable tech has come.

That being said, it could still be refined even more. As he explainedin his answer to a Twitter userssuggestion, hed like to see the rocket turnaround be so quick there isnt even time enough to touch up the paint job.

Apart from being weekend of firsts for SpaceX, it was also the first time Bulgaria launched a telecommunications satellite. For Iridium, todays payload was the second batchof its planned 70-satellite constellation, which is part of its NEXT mobile communications network. The first 10 of these low-orbit satellites were launched in January.

This weekends doubleheader was a confidence boost for the reusable rocket technology.Among other things, Musk hopes the tech will help lower the overallthe cost of going tospace. Hepreviously highlighted that launching satellites aboard SpaceXs reusable rockets is $300 million cheaper than conventional one-way-trip rockets.

Even before this weekends successes, interest in the reusable rocket tech has been steadily growing: to date, SpaceX has booked more than 50 missions including one from aerospace giant Airbus. Most arescheduled for this year or into 2018.There are a number launches both from private corporations like Iridium, as well as from government agencies, similar toBulgarias arrangement.

Perfecting its reusable rocket technology isnt just going to benefit SpaceX in the short term. Its most exciting potential application could actually be in the bigger rockets that could start ferrying human beings to Mars sometime in the2030s.

Researchers Break a 100-Year-Old Fundamental Limitation of Physics – Futurism

In Brief Researchers from the Ecole Polytechnique Federale de Lausanne have managed to break a 100-year-old fundamental law in physics. The breakthrough could influence any technology that relies on resonant system to store information. Breaking Limits

Researchers working at the cole Polytechnique Fdrale de Lausanne (EPFL) have successfully challenged a fundamental law thats limited the physics of storing electromagnetic energy for the past 100 years. This breakthrough, which the researchers have published in the journal Science, frees up physicists and engineers to develop technologies that rely on resonant and wave-guiding systems.

First formulated in 1914, the fundamental principle known as the Lorentz reciprocity posits an inversely proportional relationship between the length of time a wave could be stored to the bandwidth (or the range of frequencies transmitted in a given signal) of resonant or wave-guiding systems. For a resonator to store energy for a longer time, it has to decrease its bandwidth. In other words, limited bandwidth translates to limited data.

The researchers managed to find a work around to the 100-year-old limitation by developing a hybrid resonant/wave-guiding system using a magno-optic material. When a magnetic field is applied, it can contain the wave for a longer period of time, while also maintaining a large bandwidth.

The researchers broke the time-bandwidth restriction by a factor of 1,000 butthey think it may be possible that theres no limit to how high it could go. It was a moment of revelation when we discovered that these new structures did not feature any time-bandwidth restriction at all. These systems are unlike what we have all been accustomed to for decades, and possibly hundreds of years said lead author Kosmas Tsakmakidis in a press release. Their superior wave-storage capacity performance could really be an enabler for a range of exciting applications in diverse contemporary and more traditional fields of research.

By breaking the restriction, the EPFL research will have a major impact on wide range of engineering and physics applications. The reported breakthrough is completely fundamental were giving researchers a new tool. And the number of applications is limited only by ones imagination, Tsakmakidis explained.

These applications could also extend to telecommunications, optical detection systems, and broadband energy harvesting, the press release noted. Essentially, any technology that uses waves to store information now has accessto a wider bandwidth. That could be anything from on-chip spectroscopy, light harvesting and energy storage using broadband to broadband optical camouflaging such asan invisibility cloak.

In Brief Renowned astrophysicist, author, and science communicator Dr. Neil deGrasse Tyson appeared on CSPAN to discuss his feeling that we are not alone in the universe.

Neil deGrasse Tyson is one of the (if not the) most well-known astrophysicists. He is also an accomplished author and science communicator/entertainer, and the Frederick P. Rose Director of the Hayden Planetarium at the Rose Center for Earth and Space in New York City. Also, he doesnt think that we are alone in the universe.

Appearing on C-SPANs In Depth, he explained how the chemistry of life makes it extremely unlikely that Earth is the only place in the universe where life has formed. He said, Whatever happened on Earth, its not likely to be rare or unique. Because carbon chemistry, on which life is based, is the most fertile kind of chemistry there is. And carbon is abundant across the universe.

However, Dr. Tyson does separate the questions of whether there is life elsewhere in the universe, and if intelligent life exists,from if we have been visited by any intelligent life. What the UFO community puts forth as evidence is weak on a level that, in any scientific circle, would be kicked out of the lab room.

The basis of this argument boils down to the foundations of the scientific method. Eyewitness testimony is nowhere near enough evidence to support a claim as fantastical as alien visitors. Current evidence of chemistry is enough to allow scientists to assert that there is life on other planets, but that evidence does not extend as far as intelligent life.

After being postponed from its originally scheduled Monday launch, Bulgarias first-ever telecommunications satellite is now in orbit. The launch was a success thanks to SpaceXs Falcon 9 reusable rocket, which blasted off to space on Fridayfrom the Launch Complex of NASAs Kennedy Space Center in Florida.

This marks the first part of SpaceXs first-ever weekend doubleheader, as Elon Musks venture space company has scheduled two launches just about 48 hours apart. The launch appeared to go off without a hitch,as this photo taken by a Twitter user John Kraus shows.

For his part, SpaceX CEO and founder Elon Musk seemed satisfied with todays launch, if his tweets wereany indication. What may have been even more exciting thanwatching the Falcon 9 lift off was following its descent backtoEarth as it attempted to landon one of SpaceXs barge platforms. The rocket made a solid thud as it hit the surface of the Of Course I Still Love You droneship, which is stationed somewhere in the Atlantic Ocean.

Musk expected the landing wouldnt be too gentle, adding that the Falcon 9 was going to experience its highest ever reentry force and heat in todays launch, he posted on a tweet before the launch. Good chance rocket booster doesnt make it back.

Fortunately, it was able to make it in one piece although it may havehit the surface of the platform a little to hard.

The good news was thatthe crush core, asMusk explained in a reply on the same thread as his initial tweet, would take only a couple of hours to replace:

So, despite a little bumpy landing, overall Fridays launch was deemed a success. But the excitement is far fromover:Sunday will usher in part two of this weekends doubleheader, whena payload of 10 satellites for telecommunication company Iridium is expected to launch from the Vandenberg Air Force Base in California.

The potential benefits of developing a digital currency are significant, particularly in China. Second, as it would be supported by blockchain, it has the potential to decrease the rates of fraud and counterfeiting, which would be of service to thegovernments attempts to reduce corruption a key concern. More Study Is Needed on Reproduction in Space If We Want to Colonize Mars – Futurism

In Brief Many experts assert that humanity must branch out to other parts of the solar system to ensure our survival. However, the effects of reproduction and human development outside of Earth have only just begun to be studied. Human Martians

Humans are gearing up to make the next journey into the relative unknown with the first manned missions to Mars, which could come as early as 2022. The long-term goal of these missions will be to colonize the Red Planet. Experts believe that space colonization and becoming a multi-planetary species is the only way to ensure humanitys survival.

There are plenty of obstacles beyond traveling to Marsthat we will need to overcome before long-term colonization becomes a possibility, such as terraforming the planet to make it more livable for us Earthlings. Further, once a colony is established, the goal would then be to flourish, ensuring the colonys survival in perpetuity. At this point, we are stepping into an interestingnew branch of human biology, reproduction, and human development outside of Earth.

According to Kris Lehnhardt, an assistant professor in the department of emergency medicine at The George Washington University School of Medicine and Health Sciences, This is something that we, frankly, have never studied dramatically, because its not been relevant to date. But if we want to become a spacefaring species and we want to live in space permanently, this is a crucial issue that we have to address that just has not been fully studied yet. One study brought freeze-dried mouse sperm into space for nine months to see if space travel would affect the health of any offspring created by it. The mouse pups were born healthy, but they were born on Earth. This experiment showed that the radiation and other physical differences of space did not hinder normal reproduction. Even so, this does not mean that these findings would translate to embryos developing in space or on another planet, nor does it mean that the results would have been the same with human sperm.

The effects of lower gravity on fetal development have yet to be studied. A lack of Earth strength gravity could hamper normal human development. And even if the child was healthy for the environment in which it developed, the question then becomes: would that child ever be able to come to Earth?

The future of space colonization is unclear. Even if all of the technology comes together to allow for colonies to be established, biological factors may play a part in hindering the full potential of sustained colonies. At the very least, this would usher in a new era of human evolution.

ATeslaModel S P100D has just been used to set a new record for distance driven on a singlecharge: 901.2 km (~560 miles). Steven Peeters and Joeri Coolsmanaged to breakthe record for the lowest energy consumption for the vehicle as well, achieving 88 Wh/km (54.7 Wh/mile).

They did so by hypermiling (driving the vehicle with the specific goal of increasing efficiency). For example, because cars are not asefficient at high speeds, the drivers averaged only 40 km/h (24 mph) a speed that wouldnt be ideal for actual travel, but thats great for breaking records.

Most previous approaches to hypermiling have focused on driving cars in a straight line, but Peeters and Cools opted for a different approach, following a 26 km (~16 mile) closed loop in Belgium in order to learn to optimize the cars energy usage.

By the time we finished the attempt, we knew perfectly how to take every turn and roundabout to make sure we drove with the least possible consumption, Peeters explained in a blog post. They also learned how to drive under different temperature conditions as theattempt took them almost an entire day: 23 hours and 45 minutes.

In 2015, Elon Muskpredicted thata Tesla with a 950 km+ (~600 mile) maximumrange would be ready by 2017. This attempt was just shy of the prediction, butthe drivers think they did the best they could under their circumstances and explained what would be necessary to break the 1,000 km (~621 miles) record:Thatwould have to be a perfect run in perfect circumstances, which I believe are not possible in our country.

Hypermiling is not the way the vast majority of people drive, but it is a good test to show just how efficient a car can be. We must also consider that this test was undertaken in the error-strewn landscape of human judgement.If the Model Ss Autopilotwereadjusted to maximize efficiency, it could potentiallylearn more quickly than the drivers and make the appropriate adjustments.

The previous Tesla record holder, Casey Spencer,achievedan 885 km (550 mile) run last year, so this record-breaking run marks an impressive new milestone for the Model Ss efficiency.

While these scores are not particularly close to beating the records set by non-electric vehicles, we must remember that this is only the second Tesla car ever built (with the Model 3 coming soon), updates are arriving quickly, and a lower maximum milage is a happy sacrifice for a more environmentally friendly mode of transportation.

If Teslas cars continue progressing at this rate, it wont be long before their environmentally unfriendly counterparts are matched in performance the only category theyre really ahead in anymore. Electric cars are now closing in fast on their fossil fuel-poweredcounterparts, with other recent feats including a Nio EP9 achieving a staggering time of 6:45:9 around Germanys Nrburgring track. Why the Ethereum Flash Crash Isn’t Surprising, and What It Means for Crypto – Futurism

On Wednesday, the price of Ether flash-crashed by over 99.9% in less than a second on GDAX, one of the largest cryptocurrency exchanges. This was due to a multi-million dollar sell order being placed on the exchange. Because the exchange did not have enough buy orders on its books to accommodate a sell this large, the price crashed immediately from $317.81 to $224.48; this movement was enough to then trigger a wave of about 800 automatic position liquidations due to margin calls and stop-loss orders, driving the price briefly as low as $0.10, and causing GDAX to suspend trading.

This is only the most recent of a series of similar events across crypto exchanges, and rather than being a reflection on GDAX in particular, its a symptom of the underlying problems created by the stress of capital flow increasing faster than market infrastructure development.

Although the price quickly returned back above $300, the millions of dollars that investors lost due to forced selling of their positions will not be recovered. This incident highlights the relative immaturity of the cryptocurrency trading ecosystem, which has been stressed by a 20x increase in daily trading volume since the start of 2017 without any fundamental change in market structures.

From the trader-in-questions side (assuming they were simply trying to get out of this position in a crude way and not a malicious actor or market manipulator) dumping the whole position at once will have likely incurred millions in liquidity costs. A single huge move like this is both bad for them and for the margin traders who were forced out of positions at even worse prices, all due to price actions that would be easily avoidable through more intelligent trading logic.

On the other side, the exchange doesnt have adequate safeguards to prevent such a flash-crash. When a participant has a margin position less than their margin requirements in traditional markets, they are typically given 2448 hours to post collateral. GDAX, on the other hand, seems to instantly liquidate you (with market orders) into their very thin order book. Some version of this problem exists on most crypto exchanges, although a few (like Poloniex) try to mitigate it with simple trading logic to soften the price impact of underwater margin position liquidations.

GDAX stop losses operate similarly. For major foreign exchange trading pairs in traditional markets, the largest differential between a persons stop loss and actual execution price is ~0.10%. On GDAX, people who had stop losses at $316 actually sold their ether at $0.10. Furthermore, GDAX does not specify if stop orders are time-priority based or price based. For example, if someone has a stop loss order at $50, and someone puts a stop loss order later at $100, when a flash crash occurs, who gets to sell their ether first?

While this creates a short term windfall in margin calls for the exchanges owners, they pay that price in reputation and deterring players from trading crypto on margin. The uncertainty a trader has to live with in this environment is one of the major barriers to entry for the large institutional pools of capital that can bring the crypto markets into maturity and raise the overall market cap to the size of traditional asset classes.

While these events are frustrating due to the negative impact they have on the space as a whole, they are also exciting because they illustrate the massive opportunity present for those willing to do the work to build out sophisticated financial infrastructure.

The Omega One platform, which will be launched later in 2017, will provide a structural solution to problems like this, protecting both traders and exchanges.

If the trader who put the $30m order on GDAX had put the order in on Omega One, the market would barely have moved at all. Instead, the Omega trading engine would have taken this traders order and broken it into thousands of tiny sell orders, and placed those orders intelligently over time across all the worlds liquid crypto exchanges.

The order books on GDAX, Poloniex, Bitfinex, Kraken, and other exchanges would each have seen a tiny increment of additional selling pressure in the first seconds after the order enough to absorb the available demand to buy on those exchanges, but not enough to force a price move.

As those initial sell orders were traded, the Omega One trading engine would have monitored the outcomes and adjusted behavior accordingly within milliseconds, releasing sell orders to the market at exactly the pace that the market could absorb. Instead of pushing the entire order into one place within one second and thus crashing the market, Omega One would have spread the order out over all the worlds crypto exchanges over the space of perhaps an hour, and nobody would be any the wiser for it.

In addition to not losing millions of dollars and crashing the market, the unknown trader from Wednesday would have also have avoided the risk of putting their millions of dollars worth of crypto in the hands of an exchange. In order to sell the Ether on GDAX, they first needed to send that Ether to GDAX, giving up custody of their funds and trusting GDAX not to be hacked or otherwise compromise their funds.

If the unknown trader had been using Omega One, they could have kept their funds on the Ethereum blockchain in a wallet under their control, right up until the point of settlement. The combination of security and cost benefits provided by Omega One will transform the crypto markets, facilitating the next level of maturity of the crypto trading ecosystem.
