Ex-Freedom star Williams co-captains, starts for West in All-Star Game – Morganton News Herald

GREENSBORO Ariyana Williams played her final game at the high school level on Monday night, and fittingly, she wore red.

The Freedom High 2017 graduate undeniably the face of Lady Patriots hoops over the last four spectacular seasons served as one of three team captains and started for the West in the 43rd annual N.C. Coaches Association East-West All-Star womens basketball game held at the Greensboro Coliseum.

The East women won, 74-71, and now lead the all-time series 23-20.

Williams, who was named an academic all-star as well with a GPA over 3.0, was FHS 48th all-time East-West participant and 10th in womens basketball.

The 2,000-point prep scorer and three-time county player of the year made both of her first-half free-throw attempts and scored five total points, including a go-ahead 3-pointer with 7:30 remaining in the contest to account for the Wests final lead at 60-57.

Williams attempted the first shot of the game (a wing 3) and grabbed the first rebound of the game, and her other main first-half highlight came when she scooped a loose ball for a steal and assisted teammate Kristian Eanes layup on the other end for a 19-18 West lead as part of a 7-0 scoring run early in the second period.

Throughout, Williams showed her versatility as the 5-foot-9 player handled both point guard duties and played off the ball as well as at times guarding the post defensively. The West was plus-two points with Williams on the floor.

The West built a 34-23 first-half lead and entered the halftime break tied 23-23 in the rebounding battle, but the larger East squad surged in the second half thanks in large part to a plus-six effort on the glass.

We started off OK but struggled rebounding, Williams said. I think a lot of us were kind of tired from having two practices a day here fresh off summer college workouts.

But its always good to meet new people or meet players on other teams that youve played against but not had a real discussion with, playing with them, learning their skills and abilities. Its a great experience.

Williams, who arrived in Greensboro last Friday, was among the players already with their future college squads. She arrived on campus at East Carolina about 10 days after graduating from FHS for summer classes and workouts.

Williams mentioned that Mondays game was her first chance in game action to play alongside fellow 2017 ECU recruit Lashonda Monk of Southwest Guilford. Williams and Monk are rooming together this summer in Greenville.

The workouts have been good, she added. Its more intense, its a faster level. Its fun though, going from one level to another and catching onto everything that theyre doing. Im just trying to get a feel for everything.

Like four years ago when Williams attended the East-West game to see her older sister, Imani, play in the game, Imani was on hand Monday, along with their parents Fred and Latriece and younger brother Amare, to see Ariyana play.

Another couple familiar faces were on the West sideline: R-S Central forward Kyra Davis and Northern Guilford coach Kim Furlough. Davis and Williams squared off multiple times at the prep level and were teammates and roommates at the Carolinas All-Star Basketball Classic in March, and Williams led her Patriot squad past Furloughs Nighthawks in the 2016 NCHSAA 3A state title game.

Davis paced three West players in double figures on Monday with 16 points. NC State recruit Kayla Jones of Riverside-Martin was named MVP for the East squad after she scored a game-high 19 points, including 14 in the second half. Jones added 13 rebounds and four assists.

In the nightcap, Whitevilles Tyrell Kirk scored 18 points to lead five East players in double figures in the mens game, a 117-108 East win, as the UNC Pembroke recruit was named MVP.

Liu Xiaobo: A Voice of Freedom – Cato Institute (blog)

The death of Liu Xiaobo from liver cancer on July 13, under guard at a hospital in Shenyang, marks the passing of a great defender of freedoma man who was willing to speak truth to power. As the lead signatory to Charter 08, which called for the rule of law and constitutional government, Liu was sentenced to 11 years in prison for inciting the subversion of state power. Before his sentencing in 2009, Liu stood before the court and declared, To block freedom of speech is to trample on human rights, to strangle humanity, and to suppress the truth. With proper treatment and freedom, Liu would have lived on to voice his support for a free society.

While Lius advocacy of limited government, democracy, and a free market for ideas won him the Nobel Peace Prize in 2010, Chinas leadership viewed him as a criminal and refused to allow him to travel to Oslo to receive the award. Instead, the prize was placed on an empty chair at the ceremony, a lasting symbol of Lius courage in the face of state suppression. Beijing also prevented liberal Mao Yushi, cofounder of the Unirule Institute, from attending the ceremony to honor Liu.

IdealMentre

The mistreatment of Liu, and other human rights proponents, is a stark reminder that while the Middle Kingdom has made significant progress in liberalizing its economy, it has yet to liberate the minds of the Chinese people or its own political institutions.

The tension between freedom and state power threatens Chinas future. As former premier Wen Jiabao warned in a speech in August 2010, Without the safeguard of political reform, the fruits of economic reform would be lost. Later, in an interview with CNN in October, he held that freedom of speech is indispensable for any country.

Article 33, Section 3, of the PRCs Constitution holds that the State respects and protects human rights. Such language, added by the National Peoples Congress in 2004, encouraged liberals to test the waters, only to find that the reality did not match the rhetoric.

The Chinese Communist Party pays lip service to a free market in ideas, noting: There can never be an end to the need for the emancipation of individual thought (China Daily, November 16, 2013). However, Party doctrine strictly regulates that market. Consequently, under market socialism with Chinese characteristics, there is bound to be an ever-present tension between the individual and the state.

In an interview with the Wall Street Journal (September 22, 2015), President Xi argued that freedom is the purpose of order, and order the guarantee of freedom. The real meaning of that statement is that Chinas ruling elite will not tolerate dissent: individuals will be free to communicate ideas, but only those consistent with the states current interpretation of socialist principles.

This socialist vision contrasts sharply with that of market liberalism, which holds that freedom is not the purpose of order; it is the essential means to an emergent or spontaneous order. In the terms of traditional Chinese Taoism, freedom is the source of order. Simply put, voluntary exchange based on the principle of freedom or nonintervention, which Lao Tzu called wu wei, expands the range of choices open to individuals.

Denying Chinas 1.4 billion people a free market in ideas has led to one of the lowest rankings in the World Press Freedom Index, compiled by Reporters without Borders. In the 2016 report, China ranked 176 out of 180 countries, only a few notches above North Koreaand the situation appears to be getting worse. Under President Xi Jinpings consolidation of power in preparation for this years Party Congress, the websites of liberal think tanks, such as the Unirule Institute, have been shut down, and virtual private networks (VPNs) are being closed, preventing internet users from circumventing the Great Firewall.

Lius death is a tragic reminder that China is still an authoritarian regime whose leaders seek to hold onto power at the cost of the lives of those like Liu who seek only peace and harmony through limiting the power of government and safeguarding individual rights.

Freedom Caucus won’t support House budget resolution – The Hill

The conservative House Freedom Caucus is unwilling to vote for the House budget resolution thats scheduled to be considered in committeeon Wednesday, a source told The Hill on Monday.

They dont want to vote for a vehicle to a tax package theyve not seen, the GOP source with knowledge of the conservative blocs thinking said.

Additionally, they have issues with the budget levels and would support something closer in line to the presidents budget, the source added.

The source added that Freedom Caucus has yet to issue a formal position for or against the budget, but notedthatspending and tax reform details are the primary concerns. An official position could be released later in the week.

Those cuts would come primarily from anti-poverty programs such as the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program and Temporary Assistance for Needy Families welfare support, in part through introducing more work requirements to qualify for such aid.

The 31-member-strong caucus could sink a budget resolution on the House floor. With 218 votes needed to pass the resolution, the 240-member Republican caucus cannot afford to lose more than 22 votes. No Democrats are expected to vote for the resolution.

The Freedom Caucusis looking for a resolution to move forward, the source said.

Freedom Caucus member Rep. Dave Brat (R-Va.), who sits on the Budget Committee, told The Hill he's currently undecided on the GOP budget, predicting the vote will be close.

"In light of the healthcare cluster in the Senate," Brat said, "I need to see our tax plan [without] [the border-adjustment tax] as well as the welfare to work language in the budget instructions before I can vote yes."

Three Freedom Caucusmembers are on the Budget Committee, which would be able to pass the resolution out of committee without their support.

But the centristTuesdayGroup may also oppose the measure when it reaches the floor.

At the end of June, 20TuesdayGroup members signed a letter objecting to using the budget resolution to carry out large mandatory spending cuts, and demanding a bipartisan approach to the budget.

Absent such a bipartisan, bicameral agreement, we are reticent to support any budget resolution on the House floor, the letter said.

If the group were to sway just three more House Republicans to oppose the budget resolution, it could prevent the measure from moving forward.

Budget Committee Chairwoman Diane BlackDiane BlackFreedom Caucus won't support House budget resolution House panel to mark up budget Wednesday after weeks of delay Helping caregivers provide an invaluable service to those in need MORE (R-Tenn.) and House Speaker Paul RyanPaul RyanGOP chairman gets hundreds of thousands of comments on tax reform Freedom Caucus won't support House budget resolution GOP lawmaker: No town halls because of threats against lawmakers MORE (R-Wis.) had been working to ensure that the budget offered in committee would be able to pass on the floor.

If they fail, however, they could still pass a shell budget resolution before striking a spending deal with Democrats that would serve only to pave the way forward for tax reform. The bill would include instructions that would allow tax code changesto pass through reconciliation, a workaround to the Senate filibuster.

In Argentina’s religious freedom row, politics makes strange bedfellows – Crux: Covering all things Catholic

ROME Argentina didnt exist as a nation when Shakespeare inspired the line politics make strange bedfellows, but if the Bard were around today, he might well look to the popes native country for proof, where the once leading conservative rival of the future pontiff and Amnesty International find themselves in an unlikely alliance over a proposed religious freedom law.

In the case of Archbishop Hctor Rubn Aguer of La Plata, seen as the countrys most fiercely traditional prelate on matters such as the legalization of abortion and contraception, he insists the law could threaten the Churchs protected status under the countrys constitution, while Amnesty International fears the law could deprive Argentine youth of their sexual rights.

To put the situation in American terms, its as if the late Jerry Falwell and the ACLU had found themselves on the same side of a church/state debate i.e., a head-scratcher, and one that helps illustrate the often-maddening political complexity out of which Pope Francis emerged.

The bill was presented to the Argentine senate in June, and it reflects a consensus among various religious groups in the country: The local Catholic bishops conference, the two largest Jewish institutions, an Islamic Center, and various federations of Evangelical churches and Orthodox Christians. It has the support of the national government, including President Mauricio Macri.

Among other issues, the proposed bill introduces a right to conscientious objection, both for individuals and institutions. If passed, the measure could be invoked for military deployments, providing medical procedures such as abortion, the right to have a holiday during religious festive days, and the right to rest on the days imposed by each religion.

In addition, registration of religious institutions would no longer be mandatory, although registering would provide benefits, including tax exemptions, to those who do. According to those promoting the bill, its intended to offer a deeper understanding of religious freedom as a human right.

The initiative was put together by the countrys Secretariat of Worship, which convoked different religious denominations to hear opinions. Its original scope was to replace legislation sanctioned by the military government in 1978.

According to the Argentine newspaper La Nacin, Santiago de Estrada, the man who leads the government office, said it was the religious institutions that called for the incorporation of a right to conscientious objection.

Estrada also underlined the harmony among religious denominations that exists in the country, leading to a healthy and fruitful coexistence promoted by Cardinal Jorge Mario Bergoglio, once Archbishop of Buenos Aires, today Pope Francis.

Aguer, considered a leading voice among conservatives in Argentina, is a man whos often clashed with Bergoglio, to the point that when Francis was elected to the papacy, according to news reports from the time, Aguer refused to ring the bells of the cathedral of his archdiocese, La Plata.

Aguer and Francis have known each other a long time. The two worked together in the 1980s, when Aguer was rector of San Miguel seminary and the future pope was the provincial superior of the Jesuits in Argentina. In the 1990s, the two were both auxiliary bishops of Buenos Aires.

Their relationship has never been ideal, and they have very different styles: Aguer tends to be confrontational, while Francis usually takes a more pastoral approach. However, Argentine journalist Mariano De Vedia reports that the two exchange hand-written letters often, and quotes fellow Argentine bishops as saying their differences are more about tone than content.

On Saturday, during his weekly TV program, Aguer spoke about the proposed bill, saying that its unnecessary and that it could have a negative effect on the Catholic Church, hence on Argentine society as a whole.

He also lambasted the Permanent Commission of the Argentine bishops, who went through the proposed bill and gave their green-light, or, at least, according to Aguer, their nihil obstat(a Latin phrase meaning, nothing stands in the way.)

Such a law, Aguer said, should have been debated by the conference as a whole during their plenary assembly, arguing that its too important for it not to be the case.

Aguer also warned that the law would allow an uncontrollable number of sects to grow wildly in the country.

According to the archbishop, the law is being considered because of the pressure of a number of pastors [quotation marks in the original] who dont belong to any specific church.

Never one to hold back a thought, Aguer also spoke about the number of baptized Catholics who join evangelical churches in Argentina, saying that he could come up with at least one reason: Evangelicals talk to people about Jesus, about prayer, penitence, eternal life, while were too busy trying to guarantee the temporal well-being of the Argentine society.

On the other hand, what can we do on these issues? How much do policy makers listen to us? It would be necessary, on our part, to do an examination of conscience, and probably, as a conclusion, a mea culpa.

Last but not least, Aguer also said that the proposed bill would be unconstitutional, and this is something he and Amnesty International have in common. However, their reasons are clearly divergent.

For the archbishop, the law contradicts Argentinas Constitution because making all religions equal is at odds with the constitutions second article, which says that the state sustains Roman Catholic apostolic worship.

Sustaining, Aguer added, doesnt mean that the government throws a few bucks to priests, but that it supports, favors and privileges the Catholic Church.

Mariela Belski, executive director of the Argentine branch of Amnesty International also argued that the proposed bill would be unconstitutional, but her argument is that it violates rights [that are] constitutionally protected.

Among them, she said, are the sexual and reproductive rights of young people and adults, since she claims a health-care provider could invoke the law to refuse to hand out contraceptives on religious grounds.

Belski also argued that a teacher could refuse to teach evolutionary theory, and that it leaves hanging on a thread the law of Integral Sexual Education, because any teacher could limit religious education to Christian sexual morality or the morality of any other religion.

Furthermore, Belski wrote, a judge could refuse to celebrate a marriage between people of the same sex on the basis of moral or religious principles, violating peoples right to equality and nondiscrimination.

In 2012, Argentina approved a law on gender identity regarded by observers as one of the most far-reaching in the world. The law states that a person can legally change gender by simply saying so, while most other countries that accept legal gender change have many requirements, ranging from an actual sex change to court orders.

The law had an impact on the educational system, with the government designing booklets teaching students to choose their gender, regardless of their sexual identity. Teachers were asked not to impose stereotypical ideas on children. Sexual education manuals reflecting those values were to be used in every school receiving public funds, including religious ones.

In the end, the manuals werent implemented because the drawings and images depicted were considered too explicit for five-year-olds. Nevertheless, according to the website of Argentinas Education Ministry, the de-naturalization of gender stereotypes began in 2010, when Pope Franciss home country legalized gay marriage, the first nation in Latin America to do so.

Belski argues that the proposed bill would represent a substantive recoil that would allow public employees to fulfill the task for which they were hired.

She also writes that conscience objection on health issues and especially sexual and reproductive health used in an abusive and arbitrary way has constituted an illegitimate barrier to access legal abortion.

To date, theres been no comment from Pope Francis regarding the law, but seeing that hes long advocated both religious pluralism and the right to conscientious objection, its not far-fetched that hed be among the Argentine bishops supporting it.

Theres a persecution of which not much is being said, Francis said last year during one of his daily Masses, cross-dressed as culture, cross-dressed as modernity, cross-dressed as progress.

The pope said this educated persecution occurs not when a person confesses the name of Christ, but for wanting to have and to manifest the values of a Son of God.

We see every day that the powerful countries create laws that force us to go through this path a nation that doesnt follow these modern laws, these cultures, or that at least doesnt want to have them in its laws, is accused, is politely persecuted, Francis said.

Its a persecution that robs man of his freedom, even from conscientious objection! he added.

Damaged Colorado Freedom Memorial closer to being repaired – FOX31 Denver

AURORA, Colo. The Colorado Freedom Memorial, which was damaged over the July 4 weekend, is getting closer to being repaired.

A blank glass panel was shattered on the memorial dedicated to Coloradans who have died while defending our freedom.

(Photo: Colorado Freedom Memorial)

Officials with the memorial say their insurance company is completing their review of the claim and will let them known by mid-week how much of the damage is covered.

They say they are also working with the memorial designer Kristoffer Kenton to include names on the new panel that memorial officials discovered since it was first dedicated.

Once the manufacturer gets the order, they expect about the new panel to be ready in about 10 weeks.

Memorial officials are also working with security advisers to design a system that will provided surveillance of the Memorial.

Last weekend, a memorial fundraiser brought in $19,000, and supporters have donated another $11,000 for repairs on the Restore Colorado Freedom Memorial GoFundMe page.

Organizers believe it will cost at least $55,000 to replace the damaged pane.

Freedom slug way to series win over CornBelters at UC Health Stadium; Godbold leads offensive surge – User-generated content (press release)…

A 4-for-4 night from Andrew Godbold, which included a towering home run to dead center in the bottom of the eighth inning, lifted the Florence Freedom, presented by Titan Mechanical Solutions, over the Normal CornBelters by a score of 8-7 to take the series Sunday at UC Health Stadium.

The Freedom (34-20) got the scoring started in the bottom of the first when Daniel Fraga reached on an error by Normal (25-29) shortstop Santiago Chirino before stealing second base and advancing to third on a passed ball. Fraga then scored on a broken bat ground out to second by Taylor Oldham.

In the top of the second Normal struck back, registering four consecutive singles to start the frame which included a pair of run scoring one baggers by Hakes and Craig Lepre giving Normal the edge 2-1. Florence would answer in the home half of the second however, as Jordan Brower, Godbold and Garrett Vail strung together three straight singles, with Vails tying the score.

The CornBelters regained the lead in the top of the fifth when Aaron Dudley followed a Chirino single with a line-drive two-run homer to right field, putting Normal in front, 4-2.

But Florence would surge ahead in the home half of the sixth, sending eight men to the plate and scratching across four runs. Jose Brizuela led off with a single before reaching third on a double by Andre Mercurio. Collins Cuthrell followed with a sacrifice fly to score Brizuela before Brower plated Mercurio as the tying run with a RBI-single. Godbolds second double of the night scored Brower to grant Florence a 5-4 lead, and a Vail sacrifice fly plated Godbold after the latter had reached third on a wild pickoff attempt at second base.

The Freedom added a run to their lead with a Mercurio RBI-groundout in the seventh, only to see the lead diminished to one run on a Brian Hakes two-run homer to right field off Matt Kaster in the eighth.

In the bottom half, Godbolds solo home run off reliever Ben McKendall would give Florence a much- needed insurance run, as Nolan Meadows homered off Keivan Berges with two out in the top of the ninth, followed by a Justin Fletcher bloop-double to shallow center field. Berges, however, recovered to induce a game-ending flyout from Diego Cedeno, giving the Freedom the series victory.

Eric Gleese (1-1) earned the win, going six innings and allowing four runs on nine hits before turning the game over to Patrick McGrath, who pitched a flawless seventh. Charlie Gillies (4-5) took the loss, surrendering six runs (four earned) on ten hits over five and two-thirds innings.

The Freedom next travel to Schaumburg, Illinois to open a three-game series Tuesday against the East Division-leading Schaumburg Boomers. Jordan Kraus (7-3) will start for the Freedom, while the Boomers will counter with Lars Liguori (4-2). First pitch is scheduled for 6:30 p.m. Central Time at Boomers Stadium.

The Florence Freedom are members of the independent Frontier League and play all home games at UC Health Stadium located at 7950 Freedom Way in Florence, KY. The Freedom can be found online at FlorenceFreedom.com, or by phone at 859-594-4487.

Americans support freedom-loving Iranians – Washington Times

The American people love and support the freedom-loving people of Iran.

I would like to ask you today, are you ready to hold the mullahs accountable? Are you ready to hold Khamenei accountable? Are you ready for regime change? Are you ready to get rid of the greatest sponsor of terrorism in the world? Are you ready to restore freedom to Iran? Are you ready for honest elections? Are you ready for a democracy in Iran? Are you ready for equality in Iran? Are you ready for human rights in Iran? Are you ready for religious freedom in Iran?

Now is the time. When our forefathers met 241 years ago this time, they pledged their lives, their fortunes, their sacred honor, for a Declaration of Independence for a new America. Yes, from that we found life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness. And thats what we want for Iran today.

Republican Rep. Robert Pittenger represents the 9th Congressional District in North Carolina and serves on the House Financial Services Committee. This excerpt is from his remarks to the July 1 rally in Paris.

Faithful reminded freedom, prayer go together – The Catholic Sun

Even with some relief at the federal level regarding religious freedom, Americans, Catholics especially, must continue to pray and be vigilant to protect these liberties at the state and local level, said Auxiliary Bishop Eduardo A. Nevares at the annual Fourth of July Mass.

The liturgy at Ss. Simon and Jude Cathedral closed Phoenixs observance of the nationwide Fortnight for Freedom. The faithful remained after Mass to offer a Rosary for the United States of America.

Thanks be to God, much of the affront to religious freedom that the Obama administration was continuing to provide against the Church has now been suspended by President Trump, Bishop Nevares said, noting the power of prayer. Prayer is all important in this battle that we are in defending all our religious freedoms and religious liberty.

However, he said, the affront to our religious liberty and religious expression is not over. It might be paused from the federal government, but now it is being carried at the state and the city, county and local levels.

The bishop recalled a presentation from Alliance Defending Freedom founder Alan Sears, who along with his wife Paula was recently invested into the papal Order of St. Gregory the Great, that provided a list of several of these cases of peoples religious liberty being attacked:

The Huguenins are now compelled by law to compromise the very religious beliefs that inspired their lives. Why? Because it is a price of citizenship to go against your own conscience, Bishop Nevares said. Breanna and Joanna could face a $2,500 fine and six months in jail for every day they decline to produce and sell such art to the same-sex couple, he added.

Bishop Nevares also noted how gender dysphoria is being promoted among the youth, referencing a childrens book targeted to kindergarteners and drugs that postpone puberty so youth can decide their sex.

So, something that is normal, something that contributes to the dignity of the human person, something that is the design of Almighty God, is now being withheld from our young people, their gender, so that they can decide what gender they want to be, he said.

St. John Paul II said when he came to America in 1987, You are in a culture war, he said. My brothers and sisters, the war is just beginning and its not going to go away. We need to be strong and we need to be convinced of our Catholic principles and our Catholic faith. We need to be men and women willing to sacrifice for these great rights.

The bishop asked how the faithful should respond to attacks on religious liberty. If Jesus says prayer can move mountains, it can surely move the hearts of the secular society today in which we live, said Bishop Nevares. In particular, he added, is the importance of prayer in the home, that we pray with our children, and pray with our spouses for our children.

Secondly, he said, we need to be active participants in the voting process. Most of us vote in presidential elections, he added, but give little thought to lesser government officials such as school board members and legislators, yet they also have influence upon our culture and our Christian values and principles.

So, let us be active contributing Catholics and active contributing voters on each and every election that comes up so that we may once again be one nation, under God, indivisible, with liberty and justice for all.

After Mass, the bishop joined the faithful in praying the Rosary for the United States of America. They offered the intentions for each decade for the three branches of the federal government, state and local governments and the military services. Representatives from the Knights of Columbus, the Society of St. Vincent de Paul, the Cursillo movement, the retired police officers community and the veterans community took turns leading each decade. The faithful prayed for every U.S. state as they fingered each red, white or blue bead.

Manny Yrique, who came up with the Rosary and organized the event, said he was pleased with the participation and said that every individual is called to make a difference.

A woman from Indiana came and I gave her a rosary and told her to take it back to her parish, he said. We can change the world, but we have to do it one person at a time.

Brandon Trichel from All Saints Parish in Mesa brought his family to the Mass because, he said, theres no better way to celebrate freedom than to celebrate Christ.

Christ is truth. There is no truth without Him and no freedom without truth, he said. Its so sad in todays society, people think theyre free, free to express themselves, but theyre in bondage.

Josine Olakkengil, a parishioner at the cathedral, brought her family to the Mass because she said it is important to celebrate with other Christians. An immigrant from India, she said shes especially thankful for the freedoms her family enjoys in this country.

That community is important. In India, many of the people we lived around were Hindus, Olakkengil said. Theres a lot of persecution of Catholics and Christians, so compared to that, we have a lot of religious freedom here. But I heard of the infringements of these rights in the bishops homily and we need to pray that these rights are preserved.

ABC, NBC hit with backlash after pinning ‘hate group’ label on Alliance Defending Freedom – Washington Times

If theres anything conservatives hate, its having their organizations labeled hate groups by the liberal Southern Poverty Law Center and then seeing the tag repeated in the media.

Alliance Defending Freedom officials are still waiting for a retraction and apology after ABC and NBC referred last week to the Christian legal organization as an alleged hate group, citing the SPLC designation.

Both networks included the label in stories Wednesday about a closed-to-press speech by Attorney General Jeff Sessions at the Christian legal organizations Summit on Religious Liberty in Dana Point, California.

The network reports followed an SPLC press release Tuesday titled Attorney General Jeff Sessions to Address Anti-LGBT Hate Group in Closed-Door Event, prompting ADF to accuse the networks of basing their reporting on a biased hit piece.

ABC News has committed journalistic malpractice, said ADF spokeswoman Kerri Kupec in a statement. For ABC News to essentially cut and paste false charges against Alliance Defending Freedom by a radically left-wing, violence-inciting organization like Southern Poverty Law Center is a discredit to ABC News and to the profession.

The NBC online article was headlined Jeff Sessions Tells Hate Group DOJ Will Issue Religious Freedom Guidance, while ABC reported that Mr. Sessions delivered a speech to an alleged hate group at an event closed to reporters.

Neither ABC nor NBC has responded to the ADFs request for an apology and retraction, said ADF spokeswoman Briana Herlihy, and the networks did not return requests by The Washington Times over the weekend for comment.

The brouhaha comes with allegations of media bias on the rise along with debate over the SPLCs hate group listing, which lumps mainstream conservative groups like the ADF and Family Research Council with the Ku Klux Klan and neo-Nazis.

The SPLC doubled down on the label with a statement Saturday calling the ADF a hate group that cloaks itself in religion as it spreads demonizing lies about the LGBT community in this country and seeks to criminalize it abroad.

It was inappropriate for Attorney General Sessions to lend his credibility to the group by appearing before it, and it was ironic that he would suggest that the rights of ADF sympathizers are under attack when the ADF is doing everything in its power to deny the equal protection of the laws to the LGBT community, said SPLC President Richard Cohen.

The Democratic National Committee jumped into the fray by accusing Mr. Sessions of choosing to spend his time speaking in front of one of the countrys leading anti-LGBTQ hate groups.

Meanwhile, ADF senior counsel Kristen K. Waggoner decried the SPLCs designation as nothing more than propaganda, adding that the alliance has one of the most respected Supreme Court practices in the country.

She noted that the ADF has won seven cases in seven years before the U.S. Supreme Court, including last months ruling in favor of Trinity Lutheran Church, which had sought public funds to resurface its preschool playground.

I think the real question is, why [are] ABC and NBC willing to promote propaganda and cut and paste the Southern Poverty Law Center press release into its story when the left and the right have discredited this other organization? Ms. Waggoner asked in an interview with Fox News host Tucker Carlson.

Based in Montgomery, Alabama, the SPLC has enjoyed a bounce in its public profile during the Trump administration even as its critics accuse the group of sullying its civil rights legacy with politically motivated fear-mongering.

Time and again I see SPLC using the reputation it gained decades ago fighting the Klan as a tool to bludgeon mainstream politically conservative opponents, said Cornell Law School professor William A. Jacobson on his blog, Legal Insurrection.

Conservatives locked horns with the SPLC earlier this year after the charity tracker GuideStar attached the hate group label to 46 nonprofits, including the ADF and FRC. GuideStar removed the tags from its database last month while saying the information would still be available upon request.

David French, a former ADF senior counsel, called on news outlets to stop citing the SPLC, saying the Alabama-based group has become a dangerous joke.

He pointed to the 2013 attack on a security guard at the Family Research Council by a Virginia gunman who said he researched the group on the SPLCs website, which lists 917 organizations on its hate map.

Enough is enough. The SPLC has lost its integrity, said Mr. French in National Review. Media outlets who use the SPLC to assess Christian speech expose only their own bias and incompetence.

ABC reported Wednesday that the Justice Department is refusing to reveal what he [Mr. Sessions] said at the ADF conference. The next day, The Federalist reprinted the attorney generals prepared remarks on its website.

Freedom School in Greensboro teaches reading and more (Video) – Greensboro News & Record

GREENSBORO As the music swelled, fourth-grader Floribert Kizumina squeezed his eyes shut.

Something inside so strong, he sang, before posing like a bodybuilder.

Fifty students are gathering five days a week at Hairston Middle in east Greensboro for the fifth-annual Childrens Defense Fund Freedom School run by Guilford County Schools. The session, which started June 19, ends July 28.

CDF Freedom School teaches reading with the promise that literacy is an important step toward power, in particular the power to do good. The camp starts with the theme, I can make a difference in myself, then shifts that theme outward week by week, to making a difference in family, then community, country and world.

Theres also a small advocacy or activism component. Campers and parents are participating in the Childrens Defense Funds National Day of Social Action asking lawmakers to keep funding for food stamps.

That ties into the agenda of the Childrens Defense Fund to promote policies and programs that lift children out of poverty; protect them from abuse and neglect; and ensure their access to health care, quality education and a moral and spiritual foundation.

One very crucial part about Freedom School is that we dont just sit in the classroom and read books, said site coordinator Brandin Bennett. We give our scholars and ourselves the opportunity to do something for our community.

The modern Freedom Schools were inspired by events in summer 1964 during the civil rights movement.

That summer, organizers with the Student Nonviolent Coordinating Committee and other groups rallied black people across the state of Mississippi to attempt to register to vote in defiance of laws and practices aimed at suppressing or eliminating black voting.

Civil rights activists and allies also set up Freedom Schools for black children and teenagers. These privately organized summer schools taught subjects such as literacy, math and humanities, as well as civil rights.

The Childrens Defense Fund began its first Freedom Schools summer camps in 1995, drawing its name from the Freedom School tradition made famous in the 60s.

The organization partners with sponsoring churches, schools, nonprofits and juvenile correction facilities and looks to serve students who might not otherwise have access to many books over the summer. Children of all races can participate.

Im pretty much jealous for myself that I never had this program when I was in school, said Thomas Moses, the Page High teacher who heads Guilford County Schools Freedom School.

Freedom School begins each day with breakfast, followed by Harambee time. Thats Swahili for all pull together. At Freedom School its a daily, half-hour assembly full of enthusiastic singing, chanting, announcements and acknowledgements.

In the middle of all that singing, chanting and dancing, a guest community leader reads a book aloud to the students and discusses it with them. Guests this year include everyone from Democratic County Commissioner Skip Alston to Republican school board member Anita Sharpe.

After the Harambee time, students head to their classes. On Tuesday, Kizumina and his classmates gathered in a circle of desks with their teacher to pass around a book on Supreme Court Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg, each reading a section.

The book told of challenges she faced as a child, everything from anti-Jewish signs in shop windows at the time, to being told to write with her right hand when she was left-handed, or that she couldnt take certain classes in school because she was a girl.

As the students and teacher read the book together, they discussed such topics as which hands they use to what prejudice is. Ginsburg, by the way, refused to follow that right-hand requirement fitting in to a running theme in I Dissent: Ruth Bader Ginsburg Makes Her Mark, a picture book for young readers.

About 5 p.m. Wednesday, some parents, children and Freedom School staff members trickled into Hairstons media center for a parent meeting.

Moses and his staff wanted to share with parents what their children are doing at camp and also enlist some help with the National Day of Social Action project prescribed by the CDF.

They explained that this year the focus is on preventing child hunger, and that the action established by CDF involved writing messages on empty paper plates, symbolic of hungry children.

They passed out paper plates to the parents and suggested they write messages to federal lawmakers and local officials to oppose a proposed major cut to the federal Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program, otherwise known as food stamps.

Freedom School leaders collected the plates with plans to mail them to members of City Council and Congress. Students will also get an opportunity to write messages on plates, and those will also be sent, Moses said. He said they are planning a march with signs with the children this week, but not out and about, just at the school, to show students a little bit of what marching for a cause is like.

Parent Tonya Byrd said her daughter was crushed when it looked like Freedom School wasnt going to happen this year and ecstatic when the district changed course and pulled it together in just a few weeks.

Parents Amber Bennett and Darius Harper attended the meeting together.

Bennett, the sister of site coordinator Brandin Bennett, was busy writing a detailed message on her paper plate about her own experiences with SNAP.

When I first moved out of my parents house and I moved up here to Greensboro, I didnt have a job so SNAP was very beneficial to me, she said. It helped me get on my feet and feed my child until I could find a job and do it on my own, so thats what Im writing to help other young people or young adults to start off until they can get on their feet and make it on their own.

Bennett said her son, who will be in second-grade next year, was behind during the school year in reading. When she found out about the Freedom School program, she hoped it would be an opportunity for him to become more confident and less shy about reading.

I think he loves it, I see a big difference in him, she said, even in the space of just a couple of weeks. He seems like, I dont know how to put it ...

He comes home singing every day, Harper interjected.

... more energetic and brighter about actually learning and doing things, Bennett finished. I think its made a great impact on him thus far.

Bikers gear up for one final Freedom Fest motorcycle ride – News8000.com – WKBT

LA CROSSE, Wis. (WKBT) - Saturday marks La Crosse's tenth and final Freedom Fest, celebrating veterans and their service to the U.S.

Just as Freedom Fest has become a tradition in the area, so has the motorcycle rally and ride starting in the Veterans Hall of Honor parking lot the morning of the festival.

Riders say it brings a sense of camaraderie, and for the Gold Star families who have lost a loved one, the rally has extra meaning.

"Motorcycles, veterans, I think it's been a natural fit forever, said Gary Rudy, director of the ride and rally.

About 200 riders, many with family members who are veterans or who have themselves served the country, started gearing up for the 100-mile ride through the Coulee Region at 9 a.m.

"I feel honored to be here with all the veterans, Sparta resident Don Whitacre said. They're my friends. Weve got each other's backs."

"It's just a chance for us to thank them and realize they haven't been forgotten, Rudy said.

"I like the freedom, Kathryne Humble, from La Crosse, said.

That freedom is at the heart of the day's celebrations.

"We live in a country where we are able to do things like this, Humble said.

Of course, as many at the rally said, freedom comes at a price.

"We consider that our son. It's an Army bear that was given to us, Hartford resident Colleen Lemke said, pointing out a stuffed bear on the bike of her motorcycle.

Lemke, her husband and their ride-along passenger are annual visitors to the ride and rally.

"A few tears, a little bit of laughter, she said.

Lemkes son, Cpl. Jason Lemke, died in Iraq in 2008.

Of course, some days you wish they were home, she said.

Since then, she's added a necklace she never takes off, and a few tattoos in his memory all just a reflection of how different life is now.

"Your whole outlook on life changes, Lemke said. Certain things that used to bother you no longer bother you, and you look at things totally different from day to day."

Support, however, comes in seemingly unlikely places, such as at a motorcycle rally, where there are other gold star families.

"You feel kind of proud, but a little bit of sorrow knowing what we're riding for today, Lemke said. You have a connection with everybody around you. You know they're there for the same reason we are. (Its) a little bittersweet."

Bittersweet is a word many were using at the rally, especially with the knowledge that with Freedom Fest ending, this will likely be the final ride.

"I'm sorry to hear this is the last one, Whitacre said.

Riders, however, said that they'll make the most of it..

"Today, we'll just celebrate today, Rudy said.

And they'll always be celebrating freedom.

"(There's) a lot of freedom being outside enjoying the ride, Lemke said.

Gates opened at the UW-La Crosse Veterans Memorial Field Sports Complex at 4:30 p.m. Saturday for the live music, including The Remainders and John Fogerty.

General admission tickets cost $60 at the door.

Since Freedom Fest began, it has raised more than half a million dollars for veteran causes.

If you’re pro-freedom, you should be in favor of legalizing marijuana – Salon

The greatest service which can be rendered any country is to add an useful plant to its culture. Thomas Jefferson, Memorandum of Services to My Country

I know what youre thinking. Another liberal hippiecalling for decriminalization and full legalization of marijuana because hes breaking the law right now by smoking it. Well, think again.

People probably think Im a hippie because I like wearing tie-dyed shirts or because I grew up in the 60s or because to this day one of my favorite bands is the Rolling Stones. When I was eighteen years old in 1969, I enlisted in the US Navy. I am a Vietnam veteran and hardly a hippie. I dont drink alcohol and Ive long since given up my vices of chewing tobacco and smoking cigars. Im not an alcoholic, and I have nothing against drinkers, but its a personal preference of mine not to drink. I choose not to drink, not to use tobacco, and guess what. It happens to be healthier for you in the long run if you dont do either of these activities. I also dont drink coffee or caffeinated beverages. Again, personal preference. More on that later.

So have I rolled a joint and smoked it before? Yes. Absolutely. And Ive always been up front about this.

Ive smoked pot beforenot while I was governorbut I have used it in the past in a recreational capacity. If I someday require it for medical reasons, I wouldnt be opposed to using it. In fact, I would prefer to use it, especially if it keeps me from relying on prescription pills with all those awful side effects. My friend Tommy Chong says there shouldnt be a distinction between medical and recreational marijuana because any way you look at it, its a medical plant. Instead of going to a doctor to get a prescription of Prozac or an antidepressant, those who are smoking it specifically for the euphoric feeling are doing it for mental health reasons.

I believe in marijuanas medicinal uses because Ive seen it significantly benefit people I know. A dear and very close member of my family, who has suffered from seizures, is now seizure-free due to medical marijuana. She takes a few drops of cannabis oil twice a day and now shes seizure-free and off of all her medication. Im so glad to see shes off all those pills that had to be constantly adjusted, each with a long list of side effects that sometimes seemed like a worse trade-off from the seizures. She no longer has to take those pills because she now lives a normal life with taking just drops of cannabis oil per day. I am fully convinced of the medicinal benefits of marijuana because Ive seen the positive effects it has had on her quality of life.

The fact is Big Pharma just cant duplicate what this plant is capable of doing. And the fact that our government continues to deny sick people access to this plant is truly a crime against humanity. Who knows when you might need medical marijuana? How do you know what the future has in store for you? You dont.

Every month and every year that goes by, we find out more positive things about marijuana. The list is getting longer and longer and longer to the point where I question why they kept all this information from us. Why was marijuana demonized all those years when obviously this plant has a great deal of positive attributesnot only medical. Its also a renewable resource! Thats the part that troubles me the most.

How did we go down this road to ruin about marijuana? Well, marijuana is a cash crop, and that means its bad for the pharmaceutical industry. Marijuana is also competition for the energy people because its an alternative source of energy. And now there are studies proving it can help our veterans with post-traumatic stress disorder. So when are we going to take the blinders off and do whats right for humanity and legalize this stuff once and for all?

At this point, to get the DEA to declare the end of the war against marijuana means that they are going to decide to quit their jobs for the betterment of society. Yeah, that aint gonna happen. Marijuana will remain illegal because it creates more jobs and puts more and more people in prison (which in turn, creates more jobs). Our national anthem states American is the land of the free, yet we have more people locked up in prison than any other industrialized nation. So those who are benefiting off of the drug trade arent just drug lordsremember that. Our government wont do the right thing and legalize marijuana unless we the people demand it because there are many people within our own government on the payroll all thanks to the War on Drugs.

Yes, mybook calls for ending the War on Drugs. Mybook calls for ending the marijuana prohibition. Im not an anarchist. I believe in laws and regulations, but I also believe in common sense, and the government hasnt been doing a good job in that department when it comes to cannabis. Before she passed away, my mother often told me that the prohibition of alcohol is identical to the War on Drugs. And she should know because she lived through both. You can either read and study history or youll find youre destined to repeat it. Alcohol prohibition is what started all the trouble in Mexico. Mexican border towns like Tijuana became cesspools of crime, corruption, prostitution, and drugs all because of the prohibition of alcohol. Americans would go across the border to drink in towns like Tijuana, and then once the ban on alcohol was lifted, the criminals just strengthened their stronghold on the supply of marijuana until it became a major industry.

Ive said it a million times: just because something is illegal, that doesnt mean it goes away, it just means criminals now run it. Take the Mexican drug cartels. Theyre now more powerful than the government. Guns are illegal in Mexico, yet they have guns. They have the money and they have the power. Its not rocket science. If we end the War on Drugs, then the cartels no longer have the power. It just takes politicians with the courage to do the right thing. Remember, as I said before, its not just the drug lords who are getting richer off of the War on Drugs. Our politicians in Washington are making big money by keeping drugs illegal. As Deep Throat in All the Presidents Men said, Follow the money. Always follow the money. It will take you to the answer.

To all the parents out there who are worried about how marijuana legalization will impact their children, I say, parent. Its as simple as that. Ive been for the legalization of marijuana for years. Neither one of my adult children are drug addicts. Its that simple.

Think about it this way: what does marijuana actually do to you? You cant overdose on it. You might gain a couple of pounds, you know, from eating too much once the effects kick in and you get the munchies. You might have to work out a little bit harder the next day to compensate, but other than that, whats the downside? Oh yeah, it makes you high and it makes you feel good. Thats a negative? Ha! Give a guy a joint, some Jimi Hendrix music, and a pizza, and that guy will be entertained for hours. Give the same guy alcohol and he might drink and drive or get violent and hurt someone.

I say legalize marijuana because we have a chance to leave this world a better place for our children. Marijuana legalization is job creation, tax dollars, something to rejuvenate our pathetic economy. This is a multibillion-dollar industry. This is about jobs; this is about economics; this is about freedom. This is about taking our country back. This is about getting out of these useless wars and getting back to what matters most to Americans: taking care of our own economy and our own citizens.

Cannabis is a plant that grows abundantly, that has been around long before laws existed, before our country even existed, and has a multitude of modern-day usesaside from getting hippies high. If you read mybook, youll find out that this plant can literally cure cancer. This plant can literally end our dependence on foreign oil and fracking. This plant can literally rebuild our economywe can make everything from car parts to airplane parts to paper to clothing to nutritious meals cheaply from it, but only if the American people are smart enough to recognize the truth from the bullshit.

The truth is, none of those uses for cannabis that I just mentioned is new. They might seem groundbreaking, almost too good to be true, but there are other countries taking advantage of those uses right now, and the United States is falling behind again. Weve known about these and many other unique benefits of cannabis for generations, yet we continue to dig a hole deeper and deeper into the sand and stick our heads in it. Why? All because of a ridiculous movie called Reefer Madness? All because the DARE program says marijuana is a gateway drug? All because our government doesnt want us to believe there are more uses for this plant other than just hippies getting high?

The conspiracy against this plant is one that dates back hundreds of years. Our country was founded on this plant. I bet you didnt know that. I bet you didnt know that when the thirteen colonies paid their taxes to the British crown, the colonists had the option of paying for it in hemp because hemp was more valuable than money. Yet, our country has been successful in morphing a negative connotation of this plant for a select few peoples political gains and for a select few corporations profits. The select few in both cases just happen to be powerful enough to create a propaganda campaign that is still in existence today... primarily because those same forces from our history books have changed hands over the years, but they still carry the same agenda.

Mybook presents the facts and evidence from primary sources, such as scientific research documents and medical studies, to prove the greatest cover-up of all time: Weve been at war with a plant for generations.

And for what purpose? Youll soon find out.

My book will also show you the practical, everyday applications of this plant. From biodiesel fuel to cooking and baking recipes to nutrition facts, mybook will show you what this plant can do to change your every day life for the better.

And for all those religious people reading mybook, remember this: God supposedly created the earth and everything in it... including cannabis. So if God created everything on earth for us to use, how dare we try to eradicate a plant that He put here for countless uses? Think about it. Its here for a reason. Let me prove to you how valuable that reason is.

When I was governor, I tried to legalize hemp. I would have done anything to do it, but the legislature wouldnt even give the people of Minnesota the opportunity to vote on it. Well, I left office in 2003, and I find it ridiculous that today there is only limited medical marijuana legislation in my home state. Hemp makes the best biodiesel fuel on the planet. Medical marijuana helps people who are sick from chemotherapy eat. I challenge anyone in government: What right do you have to tell someone what they can or cannot use if they have cancer? Do you have a medical license? What right do you have to turn sick people into criminals so that they can eat?

There was a time when I was proud to be an American. There was a time when I looked at the United States and looked at the future of my country with hope. I dont necessarily have that feeling today. Most days I dont recognize my country or the American values that my parents fought so hard to uphold in World War II. I wrote abook with the hope that this might change in my lifetime. When it really comes down to it, youre reading a book written by a veteran, a former mayor, a former governor, and a former Harvard (yes, the Ivy League university) professor. I am pro-freedom, I am pro-marijuana, and Ive written this book to show you how we can take our country back.

EU leaders willing to compromise on freedom of movement, says Tony Blair – Reuters

LONDON (Reuters) - European Union leaders are willing to change the bloc's rules for the freedom of movement of workers, opening an opportunity for Britain to avoid a damaging "hard Brexit", former prime minister Tony Blair said on Saturday.

The election of French President Emmanuel Macron had put reform of the EU on the table, meaning Britain and the EU could meet "halfway" to strike a deal that would keep Britain inside the world's largest trading area, Blair said.

"The European leaders, certainly from my discussions, are willing to consider changes to accommodate Britain, including around freedom of movement," the former Labour prime minister said in an article published by his Institute for Global Change.

"The opposition to free movement of people, once you break it down, is much more nuanced. The French and Germans share some of the British worries, notably around immigration, and would compromise on freedom of movement."

Blair's comments are at odds with the EU's negotiating stance, which stresses there can be no "cherry picking" from the benefits of membership of the EU's single market without accepting freedom of movement for EU workers.

Blair lamented that both Prime Minister Theresa May's Conservative Party and the opposition Labour Party had set their minds on leaving the single market, without exploring the alternatives.

"Given what is at stake, and what, daily, we are discovering about the costs of Brexit, how can it be right deliberately to take off the table the option of compromise between Britain and Europe so that Britain stays within a reformed Europe?" he said.

Blair was prime minister for 10 years until 2007. He wanted to take Britain into the euro zone and believed Britain should lead the way in the EU rather than withdraw from it.

Did you know you can support The Nation by drinking wine?

Can Democrats defend the most basic premises of the Bill of Rights in a Republican-controlled House that is run by hyper-partisan Speaker Paul Ryan and that, at Ryans direction, so frequently dances to the authoritarian tune of a Trump administration that disrespects and disregards the Constitution?

Yes, they can. Congressman Keith Ellison just prevailed in a high-stakes struggle to defend freedom of religion as it is outlined in the First Amendment, and as it has been understood since Thomas Jefferson explained it in his final letter to the Danbury, Connecticut, Baptists: Believing with you that religion is a matter which lies solely between Man & his God, that he owes account to none other for his faith or his worship, that the legitimate powers of government reach actions only, & not opinions, I contemplate with sovereign reverence that act of the whole American people which declared that their legislature should make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof, thus building a wall of separation between Church & State.

One of the most right-wing members of the House, Arizona Republican Trent Franks, proposed an amendment to the National Defense Authorization Act that would, in fact, have made a law respecting an establishment of religion. Franks, a staunch defender of President Trumps executive orders restricting travel by Muslims, sought to require Secretary of Defense James Mattis to conduct two concurrent strategic assessments of the use of violent or unorthodox Islamic religious doctrine to support extremist or terrorist messaging and justification.

The amendment targeted only Islam and was so vague in its referencing of unorthodox Islamic religious doctrine that it invited abuse. The amendment also mandated that one of the two reviews be conducted by non-governmental experts from academia, industry, or other entities not currently a part of the United States Governmentopening up the process to further abuse.

We should study what drives people to terrorism. But this amendment didnt do that. Not equally. @keithellison

Ellison responded with a stinging rebuke. This amendment stigmatizes people simply because they practice a specific religion, the Minnesota Democrat told his colleagues. The idea that Congress is seriously considering an amendment that legislates stigmatization and hate in direct contradiction of the Constitution is outrageous.

Ellison, the first Muslim elected to the House, recalled historic instances of racial, ethnic, and religious discrimination. and warned that when we single out a group of people and treat them differently, shameful and regrettable abuses and mistreatment follow.

If we havent already learned from our tattered past, when will we? asked the congressman.

Ellison also raised concerns about the message that adoption of the amendment would could send at a time when American Muslims already face violence and discrimination:

Rep. Franks NDAA amendment ordering a strategic assessment on Islam goes against everything we strive to be. By ordering the Department of Defense to scrutinize a single religion, identify leaders for some unknown purpose, and determine an acceptable way to practice, Congress is abridging the free exercise of religion, which is constitutionally impermissible.

The FBI reported a 67 percent increase in anti-Muslim hate crimes in 2015the same year Asma Jamas face was slashed with a beer mug while she was eating dinner at an Applebees in Minnesota. Her attacker admitted in court that she attacked Asma simply because she was Muslim and not speaking English.

This rise in hate crimes isnt a surprise. Our president began his campaign spouting hate, said Islam hates America, and promised to ban Muslims. His rhetoric has contributed to the growing movement of hate in our country, and I have no doubt that some of the most notorious racist, anti-Muslim voices will be a part of the non-government assessment demanded by this amendment.

Ready to Fight Back? Sign Up For Take Action Now

With support from Muslim groups, the American Civil Liberties Union, and his congressional Progressive Caucus colleagues, Ellison struck a chord in the House, convincing 27 Republicans to join 190 Democrats in opposing the amendment.

That meant that 217 House members embraced their oaths to defend the Constitution, while 208 Republicans rejected the dictates of First Amendment. It is, of course, unsettling that so many members of the House cast votes that were in conflict with the Bill of Rights. It is equally unsettling that victories of this sort come in the context of continued assaults on individual rights and civil society. But it is encouraging, in these times, that bipartisan support for freedom of religion prevailed.

We should study what drives people to terrorism. But this amendment didnt do that. Not equally, Ellison tweeted after Friday mornings vote. Glad so many of my colleagues agree.

Freedom overcome big late deficit to snap losing streak, start second half with a win over Cornbelters – User-generated content (press release)…

Despite trailing by five in the bottom of the seventh inning, the Florence Freedom, presented by Titan Mechanical Solutions, snapped their five-gamelosing streakwith a come-from-behind win, 7-6, over the Normal CornBelters on Friday at UC Health Stadium.

With the score tied at six in the bottom of the ninth, Austin Wobrock was hit by a pitch and Daniel Fraga hit a ground ball to Normal (24-28) third baseman Justin Fletcher, who threw errantly past first base, allowing Wobrock to score the winning run for the Freedom (33-19).

Florence reliever Keivan Berges (2-1) picked up the win with a spotless share of the ninth inning in which Florence used two pitchers. The other, Matt Kaster, was pulled following a double by Aaron Dudley and two walks. Berges induced a fielders choice and a sacrifice fly to Fletcher to tie the game at 6-6 before escaping the jam with a lineout. Chad Gendron (0-1) suffered the loss in relief for Normal.

The CornBelters started the scoring in the top of the first inning when back-to-back walks issued by Freedom starter Enrique Zamora set up a Fletcher RBI-single.

Normal played small ball in the top of the third, plating a second run on a sacrifice fly by Fletcher to take a 2-0 lead.

The CornBelters extended their lead to 5-0 in the top of the sixth, rallying for three runs off Florence reliever Sam Brunner on three hits. Santiago Chirino delivered the key hit in the inning, a two-RBI double, but was thrown out attempting to stretch a double into a triple to end the rally.

The Freedom, however, stormed back with two outs in the bottom of the seventh, when Jordan Brower lined a ground-rule double to right-center field with the bases loaded, plating two runs to trim the deficit to 5-2. Andre Mercurio followed suit with a two-run single as the Freedom pulled within one run. After a Ryan Rinsky single and a walk to Wobrock, Fraga laced a two RBI-single to put the Freedom in front, 6-5.

The six-run outburst handed Normal starter Edgar De La Rosa a no-decision, in spite of the right-handers eight strikeouts over six scoreless innings.

Florence will look to take the weekend series on Satuday when Cody Gray takes the mound opposite a TBD starter for the Cornbelters with first pitch slated for 7:05 at UC Health Stadium.

The Florence Freedom are members of the independent Frontier League and play all home games at UC Health Stadium located at 7950 Freedom Way in Florence, KY.The Freedom can be found online at FlorenceFreedom.com, or by phone at 859-594-4487.

Martyrs of freedom: China kept Nobel Peace Prize winner locked up until his death – New York Daily News

NEW YORK DAILY NEWS

Saturday, July 15, 2017, 5:00 AM

The awarding of the Nobel Peace Prize to a prominent dissident enraged one of the most powerful countries in the world, a single-party, totalitarian regime .

The Nobel committee was denounced by the Party and regime, which proceeded to establish a rival, state-sponsored award. Henceforth no citizen was to receive the foreign Nobel.

The laureate, already in custody, was denied permission to travel to Oslo. He never saw freedom again, dying years later under secret police guard.

Where and when was this? Who was the man?

It was Nazi Germany in the 1930s. Pacifist Carl von Ossietzky received the 1935 Nobel Peace Prize, prompting Hitler to create the German National Prize for Art and Science, which went to Alfred Rosenberg, later hanged at Nuremberg for war crimes and crimes against humanity. Peace laureate von Ossietzky died in 1938 after suffering from maltreatment in a concentration camp.

And it is Communist China today. Pro-democracy activist Liu Xiaobo was awarded the 2010 Nobel Peace Prize, prompting Beijing to begin the Confucius Peace Prize. Annual winners since then have included Vladimir Putin, Fidel Castro and Robert Mugabe, a trifecta of tyrants.

Liu remained locked up until his death Thursday. Even when he was dying of liver cancer and offered advanced treatment in the West, his jailers would not let him go.

Freedom eventually came to Germany. Someday, may it come to China.

BEIJING (Reuters) - Friends of China's Nobel Peace Prize-winning dissident Liu Xiaobo, who died of liver cancer in custody, said on Friday they are still unable to contact his widow, Liu Xia, and that ensuring her freedom is now a top priority.

Liu Xiaobo, 61, was jailed for 11 years in 2009 for "inciting subversion of state power" after he helped write a petition known as "Charter 08" calling for sweeping political reforms.

Liu Xia has been under effective house arrest since her husband won the Nobel Peace Prize in 2010 and was allowed to visit him in prison about once a month. She suffers from depression.

Liu Xiaobo died on Thursday after suffering multiple organ failure. He was recently moved from jail to a hospital in the northeastern city of Shenyang to be treated for late-stage liver cancer.

Rights groups and Western governments have mourned Liu Xiaobo's death and also called for Chinese authorities to allow his wife and the rest of his family to move around freely.

United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights Zeid Ra'ad Al Hussein also urged China to guarantee Liu Xia freedom of movement, and allow her to travel abroad should she want to.

Australian Foreign Minister Julie Bishop urged China to lift curbs on the movement of Liu Xia, in a statement sent to Reuters on Friday.

China, however, said the case remained an internal matter.

"The handling of Liu Xiaobo's case belongs to China's domestic affairs, and foreign countries are in no position to make improper remarks," China's foreign ministry spokesman Geng Shuang said in a statement sent to Reuters.

"We call on relevant countries to respect China's judicial sovereignty and not to meddle in China's domestic affairs with this individual case," he said.

Hu Jia, a fellow dissident and family friend, said Liu Xia's freedom was now a top priority for Liu Xiaobo's supporters.

"Now, we are most concerned about Liu Xia, but there has been no information about her. She is at this moment the person who is suffering most," Hu said.

"All the willpower and force we put behind freeing Liu Xiaobo, we have turned to Liu Xia," he said, urging the United States and Germany to continue pressuring China to free Liu Xia.

Efforts should also focus on Liu Hui, the younger brother of Liu Xia, who was sentenced to 11 years in prison in 2013 for fraud and to whom Liu Xia is very close, Hu said.

Several other family friends confirmed they were still unable to contact Liu Xia or family members to confirm her whereabouts.

Taiwan-based Wu'er Kaixi, a leading figure in China's 1989 pro-democracy movement who knew Liu, made a plea to world leaders to suspend official interactions with China until Liu Xia was released.

"I want to urge the world, urge the world leaders, that you failed to save Nobel peace laureate Liu Xiaobo," he said.

"You failed to help him to receive his last wish, which is freedom and medical treatment he deserved. Please, do not fail again to save Liu Xia."

A video clip of Liu Xiaobo's treatment was released by the Shenyang justice department on Friday, the latest in a series issued by authorities who say he was well cared for in hospital.

It emphasized that Liu Xiaobo's family had a history of liver cancer and that Liu Xia and his family were involved in the treatment process and kept abreast of developments.

Friends have also begun calling to be allowed to participate in Liu Xiaobo's funeral arrangements and support his wife and family.

More than 150 friends and supporters, including some of China's most prominent dissidents, rights lawyers and intellectuals, have also signed an open letter announcing plans for an "online memorial" to Liu.

Signatories have urged authorities to release Liu's body and allow an open funeral by his family and friends.

"We will pay close attention to how Liu Xiaobo's funeral will be arranged," said Shanghai-based writer Wen Kejian, another friend of the family.

"We, at the very least, hope to have the opportunity to go to Shenyang or Beijing to send him off."

Rights lawyer Chen Jinxue added, "Normally if someone has passed, the right to deal with the body lies with the family."

Liu's remains were taken to Shenyang's Xiheyuan funeral parlor, a source close to the family said, but surrounding roads had been blocked off when a Reuters reporter tried to visit on Friday.

Local authorities forced half-a-dozen supporters of Liu who went to Shenyang to pay their respects to leave, or detained them, said Beijing-based rights activist Li Yu, who is tracking the cases.

News of Liu's death prompted an outpouring of grief online, with many liberals, lawyers, dissidents and journalists sharing articles and posting on popular instant messaging app WeChat.

But censors were swift to act. Even an article titled, "Speaking of heroes, who is a hero?" from respected business publication Caixin was taken down after being shared by many of Liu Xiaobo's supporters, despite making no mention of him.

Searches and postings of images and emojis of candles, as well as the word itself, were also blocked on Weibo, China's equivalent of Twitter.

"Tonight we will let you have the floor," the state-backed Global Times tabloid said in a social media post that appeared to mock the mourners.

"The deceased has gone, the feigned sorrow is really preposterous. We will just eat watermelon and watch for the night."

Ye Du, a writer and friend of Liu's, said he hoped people would be able to commemorate Liu Xiaobo, despite harsh government restrictions.

"Liu Xia will surely be monitored and controlled," he added. "Grieving in reality will certainly also be strictly controlled, but there will definitely be lots of people who will use all sorts of ways to mourn."

Anytime leadership goes after Freedom Caucus members, its not the prudent thing to do, Rep. Mark Meadows (R-N.C.), chairman of the far-right Freedom Caucus, told reporters in the Speakers lobby.

But Meadows suggested the SLF is attacking Brooks so aggressively in ads and press releases because the congressman is rising in the polls.

Of course hes a viable candidate. I think he wins, Meadows predicted.

Its not fun to joke about those things in July, but I do know there is no vehicle over there, Meadows said.

Restricting Women’s Clothing and Freedom in Belgium – Human Rights Watch

Salma, a 22-year-old French national living in Belgium who chooses to wear the niqab after converting to Islam, gives an interview to Reuters television outside the Belgian Parliament in Brussels in this April 26, 2010 file photo.

The European Court of Human Rights has struck another blow to womens autonomy, ruling in favor of bans on full-face veils enacted in 2011 in Belgium.

Echoing a 2014 ruling in S.A.S v. France, the court cited the vague idea of living together as justification for the bans. Nowhere does the European Convention on Human Rights state that living together can be adequate grounds for restricting rights. The court accepted the Belgian governments argument that wearing clothing that obstructs the face is incompatible, in Belgian society, with social communication and, more generally the establishment of human relations.

Perversely, this weeks ruling could hinder exactly this kind of social interaction, isolating women who elect to wear full-face veils. Two of the women who brought the case said the ban had severely curtailed their lives, forcing them to abandon the niqab or remain housebound.

There is no denying that the bans impact falls most heavily on women who wear the full-face veil even the court acknowledges that Muslim women are disproportionately affected. After all, what other face-covering garment is regularly worn in public? Despite the blatantly unequal burden on women, the court declined to rule the law discriminatory, finding it is not unreasonable or beyond justification, while dismissing concerns about the undue burden placed on women.

Just as women should not be forced to wear the niqab or other religious dress, they should not be denied the choice or punished for doing so. Nor should they or other citizens be subject to unreasonable or discriminatory limitations on their freedom of religion or right to express it. These rulings embolden other governments to dictate how women can dress, and send a dangerous message that it is acceptable to curtail womens freedom of expression and belief.

Fostering human relations is a laudable goal. But forcing women to choose between wearing what they want and being able to appear in public isnt the way to do it.
