Olympian gets freedom of Wrexham

21 September 2012 Last updated at 01:57 ET

Double Olympic gold medallist Tom James is to be granted the freedom of Wrexham borough in recognition of his achievement at the London 2012 and Beijing 2008 Games.

Rower James, 28, struck gold in the men's coxless fours race at both Games.

The freedom will be presented at a special council meeting next Friday.

Wrexham's two other athletes, rower Chris Bartley, who won silver and rower Victoria Thornley will be honoured at the meeting.

"All of this has happened so quickly in such a short space of time," said James. "I think it is going to take a while for everything to sink in and to appreciate exactly what it means.

"I'm very grateful and I feel really lucky and privileged to have been given freedom of the borough.

"To be honoured in this way is pretty special and I am grateful to everyone involved."

He added: "This event feels extra special because it is one of the final Olympic celebration events and it will cap off what has been a whirlwind past few months."

Neil Rogers, leader of Wrexham Council, said the three athletes have played their part in inspiring a generation, something the London Organising Committee hoped to achieve with the Olympic and Paralympic Games.

Freedom must have limits, says Dr Mahathir

21 September 2012 | last updated at 12:14AM

Commenting on the movie, Innocence of Muslims, that insulted Prophet Muhammad and Islam, Dr Mahathir said the act of making such a anti-Islam film was something "blatantly disgusting".

He said all types of freedom should have their limit and one should not insult or cause disharmony to another person in the name of freedom of expression.

"Freedom does not include causing or creating hatred among Muslims against those who debase their religion.

"When one doesn't put a limit to the definition of freedom, then there will be room for misuse of power and it will create havoc and instability.

"People will demonstrate and get injured or murdered like in Libya. When there is instability, a country cannot develop," he said when addressing students during a forum at Universiti Teknologi Malaysia here.

He said it was not freedom when one said or did something without thinking of others' feelings.

Freedom Rider tells Pinellas students about a summer of protests in 1961

By Terri Bryce Reeves, Times Correspondent Terri Bryce ReevesTampa Bay Times In Print: Friday, September 21, 2012

CLEARWATER

In 1961, Ernest "Rip" Patton Jr. was a 21-year-old drum major in the Tennessee State University marching band. He made history that year, but it wasn't for swinging a baton.

He was part of a group that would come to be known as the Freedom Riders. They were nonviolent protesters men and women, black and white, young and old who boarded buses and risked their lives to challenge Jim Crow laws in the segregated South. On Tuesday, Patton told U.S. history students at Countryside High School what life was like when blacks were prohibited from eating at lunch counters and fully using public facilities. He stressed the importance of the nonviolent protests.

"What we did in the '60s, we did for you," said Patton in his deep, serene voice. "We did it for our generation and generations to come.

"Now I want to ask, what are you going to do for your generation?"

Patton is 72 now. His hair is snowy white. But his memories are still vivid and he's eager to share them as he travels around the country, speaking to everyone he can from students in an auditorium to talk show hosts including Oprah Winfrey.

The stop at Countryside High was one of 13 planned visits to Pinellas County schools this week. The Freedom Rider talks were arranged by Linda Whitley, supervisor of the school system's social studies department.

In June, she and 28 other Pinellas County teachers retraced part of the route of the Freedom Riders through four Southern states, visiting museums and historical sites along the way. The trip was made possible by a federally funded Teaching American History grant. During the trip, she and the others got to know Patton and invited him to speak.

During his talk, the Nashville resident recounted how blacks and their white supporters were beaten, bullied and imprisoned during the Freedom Rides in 1961.

The Fraser Institute: Canada Leads North America in Economic Freedom, Tied With Australia for Fifth Spot Globally; U.S …

TORONTO, ONTARIO--(Marketwire - Sep 18, 2012) - Canada is among the top five most economically free countries in the world, well ahead of the United States which has fallen to 18th overall, according to the Fraser Institute''s annual Economic Freedom of the World report.

Canada, with an economic freedom score of 7.97 out of 10, tied with Australia to rankfifth out of 144 nations and territories included in the Economic Freedom of the World: 2012 Annual Report. Last year, Canada ranked sixth overall.

"Canada''s relatively high level of economic freedom has resulted in stronger economic growth, higher income levels, and less pain from the global recession," said Fred McMahon, Fraser Institute vice-president of international policy research.

"Meanwhile, other nations embraced heavy-handed regulation and extensive over-spending in response to the American and European debt crises. Consequently, their levels of economic freedom decreased."

The United States, long considered a champion of economic freedom among large industrial nations, continues its protracted decline in the global rankings. This year, the U.S. plunged to 18th, its lowest-ever ranking and a sharp drop from second overall, the position it held in 2000. Much of this decline is a result of high spending on the part of the U.S. government.

Hong Kong again topped the rankings of 144 countries, followed by Singapore, New Zealand, and Switzerland. Australia and Canada tied for fifth overall.

Research shows that people living in countries with high levels of economic freedom enjoy greater prosperity, more political and civil liberties, and longer life spans.

Globally, the average economic freedom score rose slightly to 6.83 in 2010, the most recent year available, after plummeting to its lowest level in nearly three decades with a score of 6.79 in 2009.

The annual Economic Freedom of the World report is the premier measurement of economic freedom, using 42 distinct variables to create an index ranking of countries around the world based on policies that encourage economic freedom. The cornerstones of economic freedom are personal choice, voluntary exchange, freedom to compete, and security of private property. Economic freedom is measured in five different areas: (1) size of government, (2) legal structure and security of property rights, (3) access to sound money, (4) freedom to trade internationally, and (5) regulation of credit, labour, and business. The full report is available at http://www.freetheworld.com.

Canada''s scores in key areas of economic freedom (from one to 10, where higher values indicate higher levels of economic freedom) are:

Economic Freedom of the World Report 2012: Hong Kong comes in first; U.S. ranks 18th

The Hong Kong Exchange and Clearings Ltd. flag, left, the People's Republic of China flag, center, and the Hong Kong SAR flag are displayed outside the stock market in Hong Kong, China, on Friday, Aug. 5, 2011. (Jerome Favre - Bloomberg) It is the 100th anniversary of Milton Friedmans birth this year, adding particular significance to the release of the Economic Freedom of the World Report, which Friedman was instrumental in creating.

The Fraser Institute, a Canadian think tank, announced the release Tuesday. The report is supported by the Charles G. Koch Charitable Foundation as well as the Searle Freedom Trust. Authors and contributors hailed from a variety of institutions, including Florida State University, Southern Methodist University, Beloit College, the Cato Institute, the World Bank, and the World Economic Forum.

The report ranks countries, measuring the degree to which the policies and institutions of countries are supportive of economic freedom. The report is compiled using 42 variables to measure economic freedom across five areas.

The global economic crisis is mentioned early on in the report as a factor in the decline in overall economic freedom between 2007 and 2009 and the slight uptick most recently. The authors write that responses to the economic crisis have reduced economic freedom in the short term and perhaps prosperity over the long term, but the upward movement this year is encouraging.

Hong Kong takes the top spot again this year, with Singapore, New Zealand, Switzerland, Australia, Canada, Bahrain, Mauritius, Finland and Chile making up the rest of the top 10 in order from most to least economically free.

The United States has fallen in the economic freedom rankings consistently for the last decade, but is still well ahead of Mozambique and Burundi, which are each tied for the 10th worst spot of the 144 nations and territories ranked.

Innovation does not factor prominently in the report, but entrepreneurship does, with the final chapter dedicated entirely to exploring how institutions promote entrepreneurship and growth. The study authors conclude most notably that, while few entrepreneurial ventures noticeably drive overall job creation, self-employment and small firms are a large component of overall job creation.

The report comes in the wake of the World Economic Forums Global Competitiveness report, in which the United States also slipped from fifth to seventh place.

Freedom cross campaign growing in Steubenville

STEUBENVILLE - A group of parishioners from the Holy Family Catholic Church have organized a yard freedom cross campaign they hope will spread across the city and country.

Don Jordan said the idea for freedom crosses was prompted by the Freedom From Religion Foundation threat to sue the city over an unofficial logo that includes a cross and the silhouette of the Christ the King chapel on the Franciscan University of Steubenville campus.

"We had a number of concerns regarding the foundation that threatened to sue the city. We felt it was an attack on our religious freedom. Our bishops have urged Catholics to pray, fast and take action in response to the attack on our religious freedom. This is our way of taking action," explained Jordan.

FREEDOM Robert Lantz of Steubenville outlined the word freedom on a freedom cross that volunteers are constructing out of 2-by-4-inch boards. Several parishioners from Holy Family Catholic Church have created 200 freedom crosses to protest a legal challenge to Steubenvilles unofficial logo that includes a cross and silhouette of the Franciscan University of Steubenville Christ the King chapel. The Freedom Crosses also are on sale at Nelsons Fine Art and Gifts store on Lincoln Avenue. - Dave Gossett

"The Holy Family Evangelization program and our other parish ministries banded together to develop the 'freedom cross' for Holy Family parishioners to place in their yards as a witness to our faith and our right to religious freedom," stated Jordan.

"The idea came from the photos from the Sept. 11 attack on the Twin Towers. I will always remember the photo of the damaged girders that had been twisted into a cross. The New York firefighters hung an American flag on the girders. That photo will always remain with me and it inspired our freedom cross design," said John Miller, a volunteer.

The idea caught fire among several parishioners who have helped create the wooden crosses with the word, "freedom" stenciled across the front and a small American flag placed at the top of the cross.

"We are cutting, assembling and painting approximately 200 crosses for our Holy Family parishioners. And we talked to Mark Nelson of the Nelson Fine Art and Gifts business and he has agreed to create a very similar design for sale to the general public," said Jordan.

"We started our first production run Friday, and the freedom crosses are available at our store on Lincoln Avenue for $10 each or on our freedomtothemax.com website. This is about promoting freedom of religion in our country. We have already had requests from several area citizens who want to express their support for our religious freedom," said Nelson.

Jordan said several officials from Franciscan University of Steubenville spoke to parishioners after a recent Sunday Mass.

The peer-reviewed report ranks 144 countries around the world based on 42 distinct measures of policies that encourage economic freedom, the cornerstones of which are personal choice, voluntary exchange, freedom to compete, and security of private property.

"Research shows that people living in countries with high levels of economic freedom benefit from uninterrupted prosperity, greater political and civil liberties, and longer life expectancies," said Fred McMahon, Fraser Institute vice-president of international policy research.

"Sadly, citizens living in the bottom-ranked countries face a significantly lower quality of life since they lose the benefits that come from growth spurred on by economic freedom and suffer reduced prosperity."

Religious freedom key for peace, pope says

Published: Sept. 15, 2012 at 12:09 PM

BEIRUT, Lebanon, Sept. 15 (UPI) -- Religious freedom is "indispensable for peace" and forgiveness key to reconciliation, Pope Benedict XVI said in Lebanon Saturday.

Benedict was in Lebanon as part of his three-day visit to the Middle East.

"Religious freedom has a social and political dimension, which is indispensable for peace," the pope said.

When he arrived in Lebanon Friday, the pontiff said he came to the region as "pilgrim of peace," Voice of America reported.

His visit came as anti-American protests spread across the region over a film produced in the United States denigrating the Prophet Muhammad.

People cheered Saturday as the papal motorcade went to the presidential palace, where President Michel Suleiman greeted the pope, The (Beirut) Daily Star said.

Benedict said only by "rejecting revenge, acknowledging one's faults, accepting apologies without demanding them, and, not least, forgiveness ... can there be growth in understanding and harmony between cultures and religions."

He criticized religious fundamentalism as a "falsification of religion."

Suleiman said Christians were key in achieving democracy, the Star reported.

Pope Calls for Religious Freedom

Pope Benedict XVI appealed Saturday for religious freedom in the Middle East, calling it fundamental for stability in a region bloodied by sectarian strife.

Benedict spoke on the second day of his visit to Lebanon, a country with the largest percentage of Christians in the Middle East. He arrived amid a wave of violent demonstrations over an anti-Islam film across the Muslim world.

"Let us not forget that religious freedom is a fundamental right from which many other rights stem," he said, speaking in French to government officials, foreign diplomats and religious leaders at the president palace in Mount Lebanon in the southern suburbs of Beirut.

He held up Lebanon, which is still rebuilding from a devastating 1975-1990 civil war largely fought on sectarian lines, as an example of coexistence for the region.

He said Christians and Muslims in Lebanon share the same space at times in the same family and asked, "If it is possible in families why not in entire societies?" Marriages where husband and wife are from different religious groups are not uncommon in Lebanon.

AP

He said the freedom to practice one's religion "without danger to life and liberty must be possible to everyone."

Enthusiastic crowds lined the streets and cheered along the 30-kilometer motorcade route to the palace as Benedict went by in the bullet-proof glass popemobile. Soldiers in horseback rode ahead of the car.

As the pope arrived in the presidential compound, officials released about 20 white doves.

Just hours after the pope arrived Friday, violence erupted in northern Lebanon over "Innocence of Muslims," a film that ridicules the Prophet Muhammad, portraying him as a fraud, a womanizer and a child molester.
