Freedom Sings rocks Bluebird with ‘Watergate Years’

Thursday, October 4, 2012

The 14th annual Freedom Sings concert last night at the Bluebird Caf in Nashville celebrated the thought-provoking music of the early 1970s.

Freedom Sings, a First Amendment Center program that strives to educate the public about First Amendment freedoms through topical and often controversial songs, began in 1999. It has since branched into a touring company that appears on college campuses, but the original concert remains an annual event.

Among the performances at this years concert, dubbed The Watergate Years:

Former Beatles were well represented, including songs by John Lennon and Paul McCartney. Lari White performed Woman is the Nigger of the World, explaining that Dick Cavett had to apologize for the song on his television show before Lennon and Yoko Ono were allowed to sing it. The song is recognized as one of the earliest pop songs about equal rights for women. Paul McCartneys Hi Hi Hi, banned by the BBC because a censor misunderstood the word polygon as body gun, was performed by Gordon Kennedy.

Other performers included Don Henry, Mark Volman, Bill Lloyd, Gretchen Peters, Suzi Ragsdale, Seth Timbs, Jason White, Craig Krampf, Dave Pomeroy and Walter Egan.

The evening closed with Jonell Mosser leading the assembled performers and audience in a rousing version of the OJays Love Train.

Freedom of speech is not a license to spread hatred

In the last few weeks the world has witnessed the response to an evil, insulting and abhorrent movie that atbodyted to malign the noble character of Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him). Such insult to a religious icon has brought about overwhelming condemnation, and we believe that the vast majority of Americans disapprove of such atbodyts to sow seeds of hatred among people of different faiths and ethnic backgrounds. We would like to help our fellow citizens understand the complicated yet extremely sensitive nature of the whole situation. This in no way should be seen as condoning any violence in the name of our religion. There are approximately 1.6 billion Muslims in the world today, representing different ethnicities and speaking different languages.

The American Muslim population is estimated to comprise almost every ethnicity of the world. What unites them is their faith in God Almighty and their belief in Prophet Muhammad (pbuh) as the last Prophet of God.

Muslims all over the world love the Prophet (pbuh). This love for him takes precedence over the love of their own families and even love for themselves. They regard him as a man who, through amazing moral strength and absolute commitment to the Message of God, brought about a revolution in the deserts of Arabia. A revolution that spanned the entire world in less than 100 years, liberating humanity from the tyranny of the few and liberating man from the servitude of the creation to the servitude of the Creator.

God Almighty declared Muhammad (pbuh) a Mercy to the Worlds (Quran: Chapter 21 Verse 107). He was known as The trustworthy and The one who always speaks the truth, even among his enemies. He was the man who gave the honor of making the very first call to prayer to a former black Abyssinian slave while the rich and the aristocrats of Arabia stood watching by. His noble character is described in the Quran as one with exalted standard of character (Quran: Chapter 68, Verse 4).

Muslims believe that the message of Prophet Muhammad (pbuh) was the same as the message brought by previous Prophets like Abraham, Moses and Jesus (peace be upon them). They also love and respect these Prophets of God, because the Quran says: Insult to any of these religious icons is an insult to their belief system itself. (Chapter 6 Verse 108)

When someone insults a messenger of God, it hurts all Muslims. The Muslim community has always welcomed intellectual and scholarly discourse on Islam, and history is witness to the fact that Muslim scholars debated in a civil manner with scholars from other faiths. But there is a difference between an intellectual and scholarly criticism and distasteful, cheap and offensive talk.

As Americans, we understand the importance of the right to free speech and freedom of expression. American Muslims value this right on behalf of every American citizen and would never shy away from ever defending this right. We also feel that this right to free speech should be seen as a great responsibility. Freedom of expression and willful provocation will have different outcomes, and such is the case of free speech and hate speech. The right to freedom of expression should not be an opportunity to spread hate and pass insults on sacred religious icons. American society is mature enough to recognize that hate speech is not acceptable.

The Bible says: There is one who speaks rashly like the thrusts of a sword, but the tongue of the wise brings healing. (Proverbs 12:18, New American Standard Bible 1995)

Let us all as Americans unite in bringing about the healing that is desperately needed in our global village today.

The above statement is made by the Islamic Circle of North America on the anti-Islam film vis--vis freedom of expression.

Freedom of speech is not a license to spread hatred

Freedom of expression

Recently, disturbances erupted throughout the Muslim world against the film "Innocence of Muslims" which was deliberately made to hurt the religious feelings of Muslims.

US President Obama refused to ban it or take any action against its makers citing the American law on freedom of expression. Obama said that as long as this law exists in America, he cannot take any action against the producers. Also, it is election time in America and President Obamas opponents can exploit any slight mistake on his part to reduce his chances of being re-elected.

This should be understood and appreciated. It is what it is. Of course the violence against Americans has to be strongly condemned. But the situation has given rise to an important question: can such a right be absolute as American law makes it out to be? Should it have any limits or not? According to this law, there is no limit and religious sentiments do not count. Even outright and wilful blasphemy cannot be barred or punished.

For example, in a number of New York subway stations posters were recently put up which said, In any war between the civilised man and the savage, support the civilised man. Support Israel. Defeat Jihad. The relevant court also upheld the ad as permissible according to American law.

Rick Jacobs, a Jewish scholar, commented on the ad thus: What is the message of this ad, directed at the multitude of subway riders of countless faiths and ethnicities? Jacobs then continues, By using the term "jihad" in the context of war against savages, the ad paints Islam as inherently violent, evil and bent on overthrowing the Western democracies and their key ally in the Middle East , Israel.

This ad implicates all Muslims as wagers of jihad in the sense of war, though hardly a handful of extremists indulge in this and millions of other Muslims take jihad as a spiritual struggle against selfish desires, greed and lust for power. But it is quite legitimate according to American law. Interestingly, an Arab activist who spray-painted one of the posters was arrested. Perhaps we have to understand why such a law was made by Americas founders.

Those who came to America after its "discovery" were mostly persecuted Protestants from all over Europe. The Catholic Church was persecuting them for defying its authority. They did not want its repeat in America and hence they wanted a law which allowed them absolute freedom from all such persecution in the name of religion. And so this law was made.

There is another factor which must also be taken into account to understand the American law. At the time when this law was made America had mostly Protestant Christians and no other religious groups had yet migrated to the country in significant numbers. In their eyes this law was not only justified but greatly needed so that no one used religion for the persecution of others. Had there been a plurality of religions as is the case today, such a law perhaps would not have been enacted. This law gives full freedom to any individual to defy, to blaspheme or to ridicule ones own or others religions.

First we must understand what freedom of religion means. Religion is a system of belief and belief is rooted in ones conscience. In any democracy, or even non-democratic system, freedom of conscience is a very important freedom which cannot be tampered with. The Quran also greatly respects this freedom of conscience when it says There is no compulsion in religion. (2:256).

This right to freedom of conscience or religion can certainly allow a serious critique of certain religious or cultural practices as long as the motive is philosophical.

Freedom Meditech Forges Ahead With New Credit Line

Opthalmic products developer Freedom Meditech Inc. of San Diego plans to use a recently secured $2 million line of credit from Silicon Valley Bank to ramp up manufacturing and distribution of its ClearPath DS-120 Lens Fluorescence Biomicroscope.

The ClearPath DS-120, which is currently under regulatory review in the U.S. and European Union, is designed to evaluate the crystalline lens of the human eye in order to detect chronic disease such as diabetes.

SVBs due diligence on our ClearPath DS-120 showed a strong mix of proven technology, market opportunity and just how far we have come in reducing manufacturing, regulatory and marketing risk for the product, said Craig Misrach, chairman and CEO of Freedom Meditech. The financing provided by SVB is a springboard to launch this new and exciting product in the global health care marketplace.

Terms of the credit facility include an initial disbursement with additional funds available upon attaining certain milestones. The transaction comes as the company waits for its Series B financing round to close.

Freedom Meditech said in a statement that it plans to launch the ClearPath in international markets with an initial focus on countries that accept the CE Mark and CSA Certification Mark. The CE Mark is required to sell in the 27 countries that comprise the European Union and is a gateway to other nonregulated markets. CSA certification is required to sell in Canada and is an entre to certain Latin American markets. The product is also under FDA 510(k) review.

The ClearPath DS-120 incorporates the use of proprietary biophotonic spectroscopy to detect autofluorescence of the crystalline lens of the eye. The ClearPath non-invasively scans blue light into the lens of the eye in less than six seconds and produces a result immediately at the point of care. The company says the test is painless, requires no special preparation such as fasting, and produces no bio-hazardous waste or disposal cost.

Hague champions internet freedom

Democratic governments must protect the freedom of the internet - even when it provokes crises like the recent anti-Islamic video, Foreign Secretary William Hague said.

Addressing an international cyberspace conference in Budapest, he said states should always "err on the side of freedom", even when they found online content offensive or objectionable.

Mr Hague acknowledged the difficulties caused by postings such as the amateur trailer made in the United States which portrayed the Prophet Mohammad as a womaniser and a fool. It was, he said, a "contemptible piece of work" and he deplored the deaths which occurred in the riots which it provoked across the Muslim world.

He warned, however, that attempts by governments to block access to such material were counterproductive and doomed to failure.

"We believe that efforts to suppress the internet are wrong and are bound to fail over time," he said. "Governments who attempt this are erecting barricades against an unstoppable tide, and acting against their own long-term economic interests and their security.

"Democratic governments must resist the calls to censor a wide range of content just because they or others find it offensive or objectionable. If we go down that path, we begin to erode the hard won rights of freedom of expression. We will always argue that is its necessary to err on the side of freedom."

At the same time, Mr Hague announced the UK was establishing a 2 million cyber security centre offering advice to countries on how to protect their systems against online criminals who threaten the future economic well-being of states and major companies.

It will draw on the expertise of a network of eight universities currently conducting cutting-edge research on the issue and act as a forum to draw together initiatives from around the world.

"Cyber criminals and terrorists should have no refuge online, just as they should have no sanctuary offline," Mr Hague said.

Freedom Flashing Products Launched to Sell Innovative Quick-Fit End Dam

MENOMONEE FALLS, WI--(Marketwire - Oct 4, 2012) - Freedom Flashing Products Inc. has been launched to offer a new seamless end dam with an adjustable rear leg and moveable web to provide a superior seal in window flashing.

"The flexible, Quick-Fit End Dam provides outstanding security against water damage around window and door openings," said Michelle Draghicchio, president of Freedom Flashing Products in Menomonee Falls, Wis.

"The Quick-Fit End Dam's moveable web and adjustable rear leg make installation -- even the tricky ones where you find cavity variations -- a breeze," Draghicchio said. "Masons will value the flexibility that provides a superior seam as part of the flashing system."

The moveable web provides a watertight pan without the need for soldering, welding or caulking. The adjustable rear leg may be tilted to adjust for nonparallel cavity variations between the inner and outer wall components.

The standard dimensions of the prefabricated Quick-Fit End Dam are 6" depth, 3" rear leg height, 6" web width, and 3-3/4" base width. End dams in other dimensions can be fabricated upon request. Left and right side versions are available.

End dams are commonly handmade on a job site. With the Quick-Fit End Dam, a mason just needs to pop the end dam in place and complete the flashing system. He saves time and gets a superior seal.

"Give two masons the task of field constructing an end dam, and you will often end up with two very different items," said Kyle Ray of Freedom Flashing Products. "And neither of them could fabricate an end dam that would adjust for the cavity variations that are often found between the inner and outer wall assembly. The new Quick-Fit End Dam provides a consistently superior seamless seal while offering flexibility."

Freedom Flashing Products is the exclusive provider of the patented Quick-Fit End Dam, which is being manufactured in metro Milwaukee and delivered nationwide.

Freedom Flashing Products is on the web at http://www.ffproducts.com, and can be reached at 262-951-6540.

Freedom's Megan Mathes and Adrinna Freeman go high in Tuesday's first set to reject a would-be Chase spike.

By: STAFF REPORTS | Morganton News Herald Published: October 03, 2012 Updated: October 03, 2012 - 7:16 PM

Following a straight-set win at East Rutherford last Thursday, it was more of the same for the Freedom High volleyball team Tuesday at home, as it won another three-set South Mountain 2A/3A Conference match over Chase 25-23, 26-24, 25-23.

The Lady Patriots (6-7, 6-2 SMAC) jumped out to a 10-6 advantage in the first set, but Chase came back to tie the score at 11-all. Freedom reeled off four of the next five points, but the Lady Trojans answered with five in a row. From there, it continued as a back-and-forth affair, with Freedom notching the final two points to take the set.

In the second set, it was Freedom that made the early comeback. After digging themselves in a 7-2 hole, the Lady Patriots tallied the next seven points and 12 of the next 14 to take a 14-9 lead. Chase fought back to make it 24-all, but Freedoms Connor Townsend and Natalie Beam scored the final two points to give the Lady Patriots a two-set advantage.

In the third set, Freedom held an early 9-1 lead and looked ready to cruise to a comfortable sweep but ultimately had to fight off a pesky Lady Trojan squad that got to within 24-23 before Freedoms Kayla Poteat registered the winning kill.

We fought really hard for every point, Freedom coach Emily Grady said. We just played really hard. It makes me nervous when they get that close, but I think they did awesome. I cant ask for more.

Freedom was led by Townsend (14 digs, four kills, four aces) and Lauren Hasson (19 digs, three blocks). Poteat (18 digs), Kayla Wilson (14 digs), Jesse Stephenson (13 digs), Megan Mathes (22 assists) and Adrinna Freeman (four kills) were also standouts.

The JV Lady Patriots lost in straight sets, 18-25, 12-25. Next up for Freedom is a matchup at the SMAC-leading Lady Panthers on Thursday in Pattons annual Volley for the Cure contest, which supports breast cancer awareness and research.

Blasphemy, right to freedom of expression and our most sacred beliefs

Rimsha Masih, a Christian girl accused of blasphemy sits in helicopter after her release from jail in Rawalpindi on Sept. 8, 2012. (AFP/GETTY IMAGES) In his recent speech at the U.N. General Assembly, amid global protests and calls to ban perceived insults against religion, President Obama gave a stirring defense of the right to freedom of expression. Like me, the majority of Americans are Christian, and yet we do not ban blasphemy against our most sacred beliefs. In a diverse society, efforts to restrict speech can become a tool to silence critics, or oppress minorities, he said

Muslim leaders are using the controversy over a YouTube video to renew their push at the United Nations for a defamation of religions resolutiona global blasphemy code. Speaking for the 56-member Organization of Islamic Cooperation (OIC), Pakistans ambassador Zamir Akram said the video, like Koran-burnings and anti-Islamic cartoons, is flagrant incitement to violence that should not be protected by law. The Arab League is also calling for the international community to criminalize blasphemy.

While it might be tempting to treat a non-binding U.N. measure as benign or irrelevant, that would be a mistake. The defamation of religions resolution would validate the national blasphemy laws that have led to persecution and violence in many countries and lead to their proliferation.

Proponents of blasphemy laws promote them in the name of protecting religion. In fact, as our report Blasphemy Laws Exposed: The Consequences of Criminalizing Defamation of Religions reveals such laws are a grave threat to religious freedom. Analyzing more than a hundred cases in 18 countries, we found that governments and members of majority faiths have used these laws to stifle dissent and persecute religious minorities.

Insultsor perceived insultsagainst religions or religious symbols can cause real offense. But laws designed to curb such slurs only intensify the sense of grievance and put the issue in the realm of politics, often with deadly consequences. Rather than provide a peaceful mechanism to resolve conflicts, blasphemy laws tend to inflame passions and encourage violence, in the way that Jim Crow laws in the United States gave license to lynch mobs.

The cautionary example is Pakistan, where charges of blasphemy have led repeatedly to bloodshed. Its draconian laws are products of General Muhammad Zia-ul-Haqs military rule in the 1970s and 1980s. To build support from fundamentalists, he embraced a program of Islamization and increased the severity of the blasphemy law that had existed since the countrys formation in 1947. Since 1985, Pakistans courts have handled more than 4,000 blasphemy cases.

The case of Rimsha Masihthe mentally impaired 14-year-old Christian girl arrested after a neighbor accused her of burning the Koranmade international headlines, yet it is more representative than extraordinary. Consider Fanish Masih, the 19-year-old Christian found dead in jail after being arrested for allegedly washing pages of the Koran down a drain. Or Muhammad Amjad, a mentally impaired Muslim charged with blasphemy after a cleric hostile to his family claimed hed burned the Koran.

In Rimsha Masihs case, a mob surrounded a police station and demanded that she be charged with a crime; that, too, is not uncommon. Where there is a charge of blasphemy, there is often a mob, like the one in the village of Bahmani that attacked Christians, burned churches, and destroyed homes after a man publicly accused another of defaming Muhammad. Increasingly, when accused blasphemers stand trial, vigilantes are called to arms over the mosque loudspeakers and urged to take the law into their own hands if the court does not hand down a guilty verdict.

Violence victimizes not just alleged blasphemers and religious minorities but also those who defend them. Two prominent Pakistani politicians who spoke out against the blasphemy lawsSalman Taseer, governor of Punjab Province, and Minority Affairs Minister Shahbaz Bhattiwere assassinated. Taseers daughter, Shehrbano Taseer, a journalist for Newsweek Pakistan, is carrying on her fathers dangerous work. Last October, when she came to New York to receive our human rights award, she said blasphemy laws are instruments of repression and terror that ruin the lives of people every day. Taseer reports that Pakistans blasphemy laws are most often used to settle personal vendettas and land disputes.

Taking the recent media coverage about Muslim rage at face value, you might believe that hyper-sensitive and childlike Muslims are poised to take to the streets whenever they see their religion disparaged. In fact, however, if you trace the roots of the furor over alleged blasphemy, you often find people or groups making a play for money, power or revenge. The charges against Rimsha Masih, for example, grew out of an effort to expel Christians from the neighborhooda successful effort, it turned out, as hundreds fled for safety following her arrest.

Freedom, Freedom of Religion, Christian Freedom

ROME, OCT. 3, 2012 (Zenit.org).- Here is a reflection written byArchbishop GiampaoloCrepaldi, bishop of Trieste, Italy, regarding religious freedom and the truth of religion.

* * *

His Holiness Benedict XVI focused attention anew on the theme of freedom of religion in the recent Apostolic Exhortation Ecclesia in Medio Oriente, especially dedicating paragraphs 25 and 27 to it, with which we must also consider paragraphs 29 and 30 dealing with laicity and fundamentalism. On the basis of these teachings of the Holy Father and his predecessors I would like to offer some food for thought and discussion.

Freedom of religion is undoubtedly a natural right of the human person. The Magisterium of the Church has repeatedly taught that in a certain sense it is the first natural right and the principal one. To say it is a natural right means it precedes the choice for one or another religion. Each person has the right to choose his/her religion, the one he/she deems to be the true religion. This entails a peril, since it may induce people to think that the choice of one religion or another is indifferent with respect to the freedom of religion, and that this freedom remains such and is both conserved and confirmed regardless of the choice for one religion or another. Freedom of religion would exist prior to and independently from the concrete choice a believer may make later on for one religion or another, and therefore the choice, lets say, for Christianity or Buddhism would have no repercussions on the freedom of religion, which would be confirmed in both cases.

Arguing this thesis that being the indifference of the choice of one religion or another with respect to the freedom of religion also means giving up the truth of religions. If man remains free in any case and regardless of the religion chosen, it means all religions are equally true. In fact, all of them respect his freedom. If chosen, there are no religions that would undermine human liberty or in any way pollute or limit it. The truth will make you free: but if freedom of religion exists prior to both the encounter with religions and the concrete choice for one of them, the truth of the religion chosen cannot be what makes us free.

Christian doctrine has always drawn a distinction between free will and freedom. The former is the faculty to make a choice. The latter is the concrete choice for good. In fact, whomsoever chooses evil is no longer free, even if his free will remains the same. It can be said that such a person becomes a slave to himself. The choice of good, that being the exercise of true freedom, can be made in the light of reason. Pertaining to Revelation is the idea that man has this faculty: in his rational conscience he finds the light of good and evil. This light, however, often wanes, and in the wake of the fall of our distant forefathers it falls into error and leaves the straight road. Without the Christian faith it is lost. In other words, reason on its own is not able to give man that freedom he has by virtue of his selfsame nature. Needed in order for this to take place are revelation and the faith.

As we see, it isnt possible for religions to be equivalent in their ability to confirm and bolster true human freedom. Preserved in the choice of one religion over another is the exercise of free will, but not true freedom. This is because not all religions are equally true, and only one of them is true. And this alone truly permits man to be free. In fact, we are free only according to truth.

Let us return to the problem raised at the outset. Freedom of religion does not mean the choice of just any religion confirms and validates the freedom of religion. This would be tantamount to the religious relativism clearly decried by Benedict XVI also in Ecclesia in Medio Oriente. It means that freedom of religion is a natural right and hence no one religion can be imposed upon people by the force of might. But that natural right is not merely free will and does not exist regardless of truth; it draws nourishment from truth and good, with respect to which only the true religion may respond in full. It alone renders man truly free. While on one hand it is right and just to acknowledge freedom of religion, it must be recognized on the other hand how, once chosen, there are religions that are detrimental to freedom of religion.

If freedom is considered only as the exercise of free will, freedom can be exercised even without any relationship with truth. If, however, freedom is considered as a right whose exercise is linked to good, then freedom does not exist outside the relationship with truth. If freedom does not exist outside the relationship with truth this means it has to do with truth from the very outset and not at a hypothetical later stage, and hence also has to do with God and therefore religion. The truth-religion link exists from the very outset, and with it the bond between freedom and true religion.

Freedom Autosport claim 2nd in CTSCC driver, team championship at Lime Rock

LAKEVILLE, Conn.Freedom Autosports season finale at Lime Rock Park wrapped up a year of consistency and hard work that earned the team second in both the Street Tuner team and driver championships in GRAND-AM Continental Tire Sports Car Challenge.

#25 Freedom Autosport Mazda MX-5: Tom Long, Derek Whitis

For most of the race, the team was poised to do just that. After starting on the pole, Whitis was never out of the top two and led the race during his stint. After a quick pit stop, Long took over and was also running up front. As the race progressed, though, a misfire developed that slowed lap times.

Eventually, Long crossed the finish line in tenth. Although it wasnt enough for a championship, both Whitis and Long are quick to note that the finish caps off a season with no DNFs for the No. 25 Mazda. In fact, they won the Continental Tire Driving Confidence Award for completing the most ST miles during the season.

Whitis comments, I couldnt be prouder of all the Freedom Autosport folks who put us on the track with the fastest and most dependable Mazda possible. All of our success this year is due to their work and their efforts. Thanks to Mazda, the amazing Freedom crew, and most of all, the veterans and troops who make it all possible.

The Freedom Autosport crew really proved themselves with the new cars they built this year, says Long. They are the reason weve had such consistency and reliability all season, and theyve given so much hard work and dedication this year: in the shop, at the track, and especially in pit stops.

The No. 25 Freedom Autosport Mazda MX-5 took second in the Street Tuner team championship with 226 points, just three points behind the leader. The same points spread gave Whitis and Long second in the driver championship. Freedom Autosport also helped Mazda finish the season with second in the manufacturer championship.

In addition to racing, Freedom Autosport also hosted Liam Dwyer throughout the weekend. Dwyer was injured in Afghanistan while serving in the Marines, and hes not only a race fan but a track day enthusiast. He has even rigged up a system so he can drive with his prosthetic leg.

On Saturday night, Dwyer was Freedom Autosports guest at the championship banquet, where he was introduced and received a standing ovation from the series teams.

In Egypt, freedom is up for debate

CAIRO ?? Graffiti and artwork from last year denouncing former dictator Hosni Mubarak can be seen on walls and buildings, reminders of the freedom with which Egyptians expressed themselves during their revolt.

Yet nearly 20 months after the uprising that ousted Mubarak, who stifled free speech for decades, Egypt is deciding whether to embrace or restrict liberties cherished in the West.

The impending completion of a draft constitution will decide the question of whether Egypt creates a society that looks to the Western model of tolerance of dissenting views or the authoritarian example of criminalizing opinions that are repugnant to the majority of citizens.

One path for the future was brought into focus last month when hundreds of Egyptians denounced America for allowing a filmmaker to make a video critical of Islam. Several thousand Salafis who support a stringent Islamic state in Egypt stormed the U.S. Embassy compound with others and tore down the American flag.

"Those who insulted Prophet Mohammed [with] the film are hiding behind the Western laws of freedom of expression that we totally reject," said Abdel Shafi, head of the Islamic Lawyers Association. "What they did and the laws they take refuge behind are totally despicable."

Shafi said a constitution being drafted by lawmakers should clearly indicate that freedom of expression and opinion should be applied to everything but religion.

"Disdaining religion is a clearly defined crime within the Egyptian legal system," he said. "What we need now is to practically and strictly uphold those laws."

Dina Zakaria, a representative of the Muslim Brotherhood's Freedom and Justice Party (FJP) that dominated parliamentary elections before the body was dissolved, said the Brotherhood believes in freedom of religion and speech. "If you don't allow for it you are encouraging extremism in society," she said.

There's one exception, she said.

"Humiliation of any religion, of any prophet, we are against that," Zakaria said. "This has nothing to do with freedom of speech. It means that you just give a chance for those who want to create chaos to do that."

3 October 2012 Last updated at 02:29 ET

Soldiers from 2nd Battalion The Royal Welsh regiment are to exercise their right to march through Bridgend with colours flying and bayonets fixed.

The Freedom of Bridgend was conferred on The Royal Welsh in August 2008.

On Wednesday, the battalion's Fire Support Company will march through the town, joined by the Band of the Prince of Wales Division.

Around 130 troops are expected to take part in the event, led by Shenkin the Regimental Goat and the Goat Major.

Army cadets and ex-servicemen from the county are also to take part.

The battalion deployed as sub-units to Afghanistan from 2009 to 2011, although more recently it has provided training for troops deploying to Operation Herrick.

Fire Support Company is one of three units making up the battalion, which recruits from around Wales although it is based in Tidworth, Wiltshire.

Having the freedom of the the town means the battalion is allowed to parade with colours flying, bayonets fixed, drums beating and bands playing.

The parade will march through Queen Street, Caroline Street, Adare Street and Wyndham Street before ending at Bridgend Recreation Centre.

Freedom survives league opener against Heritage

Someone was hurt and came out, Mixon said. I needed to step up and make a play.

Mixon also contributed big-time on the other side of the ball, carrying the offense most of the first half after playmaker Darrell Daniels left with an injury. While the Falcons managed only a single field goal before halftime, Mixon kept the Falcons offense on the field long enough to ensure that Heritage wouldnt score more than a field goal of its own.

Freedom and Heritage got their offenses cranking in the second half. Daniels returned to score a 46-yard touchdown, and run for another. Not to be left out, Mayes scored on a 65-yard keeper himself. The Patriots offense, however, put up a good fight. Heritage scored on a three-yard run from junior Nick Zalec and a one-yarder from Julian Johnson to close a wild third quarter.

Freedom appeared to ice the game on a 53-yard TD sprint from Mixon, but Heritage responded with a 22-yard scoring strike from Carter to senior receiver Johnny Briseno.

We were off and on, but I felt that we stepped up when we needed to, Mayes said. We stuck to the short game and gave the ball to Joe.

Not only does the victory usher the Falcons into their bye week on an upbeat note; it gives some of their banged-up players more time to heal. Daniels played for most of the second half, but was clearly not 100 percent. Were on bye, baby, Freedom head coach Kevin Hartwig said. Thats the biggest adjustment right there. Now we have a week to get healthy.

The Falcons record now stands at 4-2 overall and 1-0 in Bay Valley Athletic League play. When they return to the field in two weeks, theyll face Pittsburg, which has earned an identical record after beating Liberty 29-8.

Heritage (0-6, 0-1 in the BVAL) will use its bye week to regroup. Despite being winless so far, the Patriots have lost by only a touchdown in three of their six games. The Patriots face an undefeated Antioch team Oct. 12.

Malaysia slips in Internet freedom; same ranking as Libya

KUALA LUMPUR, Oct 2 Malaysias Internet freedom has worsened this year as seen in the latest global survey of 47 countries, putting it on the same level as Libya after Putrajaya introduced new laws seen to curb electronic media use.

Internet freedom for Southeast Asias third-biggest economy was judged to be only partly free, after it scored 43 out of 100 points the same as Libya dropping two notches in the Freedom on the Net 2012: A Global Assessment of Internet and Digital Media report released last week by Freedom House, a US research organisation advocating democracy, political freedom and human rights.

The annual study evaluates each country based on barriers to access, limits on content, and violations of user rights, and traces trends from January 2011 to May 2012. The lower the numerical score, the better the ranking.

Each country is marked on a score from 0 (the most free) to 100 (the least free), which serves as the basis for an Internet freedom status designation of Free (0-30 points), Partly Free (31-60 points), or Not Free (61-100 points).

Malaysia took the 23rd spot, trailing behind the Philippines, South Korea, India and Indonesia among the Asian countries surveyed.

But Malaysia came out ahead of Sri Lanka, Kazakhstan, Thailand, Pakistan, Vietnam, Myanmar and China. Singapore was not included in Freedom Houses global study.

The top five spots in descending order were occupied by Estonia, the United States, Germany, Australia and Hungary, which scored fewer than 20 points out of 100.

The report cited the recent amendments to the Evidence Act 1950, namely Section 114A of the law, which holds the computer or equipment owner liable for seditious content as a very troubling development.

It noted that bloggers and Internet users who were critical of the federal government and royalty have also been subject to arrests, legal harassment, fines and detention even as it noted such cases had dropped compared to last year.

It also noted the increase in the use of cybertroopers deployed by both government and opposition parties to produce either favourable content for themselves or harmful content towards opponents.

Freedom House calls on Rada to put stop to defamation bill

The international non-governmental organization Freedom House has condemned the defamation bill and called on the Verkhovna Rada, Ukraine's parliament, to remove the bill from the agenda.

"Freedom House condemns the initiative to recriminalize defamation in Ukraine and calls on the Ukrainian parliament to remove the bill from consideration," reads a press release of the organization, which has been posted on its Web site on Monday, Oct.1.

According to President of Freedom House David J. Kramer, "a clear and concerted effort to restrict free expression and free coverage of the electoral campaign in Ukraine" can be seen in the document.

The organization also stressed that the situation with freedom of speech has become difficult in Ukraine over several recent months.

"The past several months have seen a number of worrying developments for press freedom and the freedom of expression in Ukraine," reads the press release.

Freedom House recalled about the situation with the TVi Channel and the Ukrainian Week magazine.

"Ukraine's European partners should be asking Ukraine hard questions about these worrying developments and should make it clear that there's no place in Europe for intimidation and persecution of the media," Kramer said.

Freedom of expression comes with social responsibility – Anifah

KUALA LUMPUR, Sept 30 (Bernama) -- Freedom of expression should come with social responsibility, especially in combating extremism, said Foreign Minister Datuk Seri Anifah Aman.

Referring to the recent uproar fuelled by the release of the anti-Islam video, 'Innocence of Muslims', he said, such irresponsible action could not be defended under the pretext of human rights, freedom or liverty.

"A line should be drawn when the prejudicial effect outweighs everything else. Malaysia has always maintained that freedom, including freedom of expression, comes with responsibility," he said at the 67th United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) general debate in New York today.

His speech was made available here.

This year's UNGA is themed 'Bringing about Adjustment or Settlement of International Disputes or Situations by Peaceful Means'.

Condemning the irresponsible action of those who intentionally incited hatred, Anifah said Malaysia was equally saddened by the violent reaction which ensued.

He said using violence to express anger would only result in further divides, more damage and loss of innocent lives.

"It is, therefore, important that we continue to practise moderation as we face the rising tide of extremism. Moderation is the best response to overcome extremism," he said.

On another matter, Anifah said Malaysia condemned the violence and senseless killings that continued in Syria, and hoped any further action to help the nation would be in the interest of the Syrian people.

He also called upon Israel to stop illegal settlement activities in the West Bank and East Jerusalem.
