Freedom Rider to speak today in St. Louis

ST. LOUIS One of the original Freedom Riders who in 1961 challenged U.S. Supreme Court decisions striking down segregated bus travel and challenged segregated public facilities will speak today at U.S. District Court downtown.

They were released later that week and continued on to New Orleans.

Raines was from Long Island at the time. He is currently a professor emeritus at Temple University.

The program starts at 12:15 p.m. with a reception. The final events consist of optional tours of the Freedom Riders exhibit at the courthouse, as well as the building's Judicial Learning Center. Florence Freedom announce plans for ‘Manti Te’o Girlfriend Bobblehead Night’ in May

(AP)Just when you thought the Manti Teo story and its fallout couldnt get any more absurd, we present to you the Florence Freedom.

Who are the Florence Freedom you ask?

They're an Independent baseball team that plays in the Frontier League, which is mostly made up of teams from Illinois, Indiana, Michigan, Missouri and that general area. The Freedom are actually based out of Florence, KY, so that means they log some decent miles on the road.

And what is their contribution to the Te'o saga?

Well, you see, the Freedom are already planning on cashing in on the bizarre story by announcing plans for a special Manti Te'o's Girlfriend Bobblehead Night, which will take place at their May 23 home game against the Schaumburg Boomers.

Yes, that's right, a Lennay Kekua bobblehead or name her as you wish, I suppose will be given to the first 1,000 fans through the gate on that evening. But if that wasn't enough, the team also encourages fans to buy seats in section 115, which will be blocked off and reserved for those who would like to bring along an imaginary friend, girlfriend, spouse, or whatever else you can think of. And there will even be a pretend kiss cam.

Seriously. They went the whole nine yards on this one.

Here are more details from the Freedom's press release:

On Thursday, May 23 the Freedom will be giving away the Manti Te'o Girlfriend Bobblehead to the first 1000 fans through the gates.

"This will be the best kind of bobblehead a fan could get," Freedom General Manager Josh Anderson said. "Because now fans can make the bobblehead out to be whatever they want it to be."

WASHINGTON, Jan. 17 (UPI) -- Popular movements prompted major gains in freedom in the Middle East last year, a Freedom House report found.

Freedom House's annual report on the state of global freedom labels 90 countries as "free" in 2012, increasing by three from the previous year, with 16 countries showing positive gains.

But 27 countries' scores declined, marking the seventh year the report has indicated more declines than gains worldwide.

The data also indicated increased dictator persecution of civil society organizations and the media, as well as escalating violence as a result of gains in the Middle East revolutions.

Freedom House said the most striking gains came in Libya, which went from the classification of "not free" to "partly free," marking the country's biggest numerical jump in the report's 40-year history.

Myanmar, formerly Burma, and African countries also saw increases, Freedom House reported, while declines occurred in Kenya, Turkey and Russia, among others.

Freedom House said the number of electoral democracies was the same as in 2011, at 117, with two achieving the status and two dropping from the category.

5 countries where freedom is dying

Sadly, democracy is on the decline in several African nations

Which countries have seen the biggest declines in political and civil rights over the last several years? Pro-democracy watchdog Freedom House has the answers in its latest Freedom in the World rankings. Freedom House rates each country on a scale of 0 to 100, with 40 points devoted to political rights and 60 to civil liberties. Four of the five biggest declines in that score over the last five years have come from African nations. Here, the five worst performers:

Bahrain Last year, Kim Kardashian irked human rightsactivists by tweeting "I'm in love with The Kingdom of Bahrain" while visiting the country to promote a franchise called Millions of Milkshakes. Why the anger? The ruling Al Khalifa family has been especially harsh in handing down lengthy prison sentences to opposition activists. Earlier this month, Bahrain's highest court upheld a rulingthatcondemned 20 activists to prison, including eight life sentences. Activists abroad are still trying to free Nabeel Rajab, the head of the Bahrain Centre for Human Rights, who according to the BBC was jailed for encouraging "illegal gatherings."

Guinea-Bissau This West African country moved from the classification "Partly Free" to "Not Free" thanks to what The New York Times called the "cocaine coup,"an uprising by the military that, months before a presidential run-off election, turned the country into perhaps the biggest center for drug trafficking in Africa. Since then, the national legislature has been suspended and opposition parties have been harassed. Amnesty Internationalwarned that the severe beatings of two government critics in October would only add to the "rapid deterioration of the human rights situation in the country and the pervasive climate of fear."

Gambia In August, Gambia President Yahya Jammeh executed nine prisonerswithout warning and declared that his government would kill all of the country's remaining death row inmates by September, setting off a firestorm of criticism from the international community. Jammeh, who gained power in a 1994 coup, later halted the executions amidst growing pressure. Still, the prisoners (many of whom are reportedly political) aren't completely out of the woods. According to Al Jazeera, Jammeh claimed that he would resume the executions if the country experienced an "increase in violent crime."

Madagascar Political and economic instability still plague Madagascar years after former disc jockey Andry Rajoelina led a military-supported coup against then-President Marc Ravalomanana in 2009. According to Freedom House, the country's problems, including "intimidation of journalists, violence in the south, and a rise in human trafficking," have only gotten worse. While Rajoelina's recent announcementthat he was "ready to make a democratic transition" by not running in the May presidential elections is a positive sign, observers fear what might happen if the exiled Ravalomanana tries to rally his supporters.

Mali The most precipitous decline in the history of the Freedom in the World report belongs to Mali. The country started 2012 with a rating of "Free" before a rebellion by ethnic Tauregs set the stage for a military uprising, which led to the overthrow of democratically elected President Amadou Toumani Toure. Soon al-Qaeda-linked rebels claimed the north, causing some African officials to dub the region the "Afghanistan of West Africa."This month, French armed forces entered Mali to stop the march of rebels towards the capital, creating fears of a military quagmire that could have serious repercussions for neighboring countries, Europe, and the United States. The worst-case scenario, according to NPR's Dina Temple-Raston, is that France's intervention attracts terrorists from other countries turning what was a local conflict into a "global terrorism problem."

Obama Tries to Shake GOP Stranglehold on 'Freedom'

President Barack Obama speaks on proposals to reduce gun violence at the Eisenhower Executive Office Building in Washington.

President Barack Obama sought to engender popular support for his gun reform proposals announced Wednesday by fighting critics on their own linguistic turfframing them in terms of freedom.

Many of the president's detractors have long felt his domestic agenda includes tearing apart individual freedoms, particularly the Second Amendment right to bear arms.

A letter circulated by the National Rifle Association during a gun conference in Las Vegas Wednesday said the White House's series of meetings with outside groups to listen and discuss possible gun reform measures was a "lie."

[PHOTOS:Obama Unveils New Gun Control Proposals]

"They didn't listen to gun owners' concerns," wrote Wayne LaPierre, NRA executive vice president, according to a copy of the letter obtained by the Washington Post. "They didn't consider any real solutions on how we can keep our kids safe. Instead Barack Obama, Joe Biden and their gun ban allies in Congress only want to BLAME you, VILIFY you, BULLY you and STRIP you of your Second Amendment freedoms."

This attitude is also widely reflected in the conservative online community, with countless blog writers expressing their concerns that Obama seeks to limit their access to guns in order to prevent a revolution and compare him to Stalin, Hitler or Castro.

"The administration's intent could not be more clear," writes Tom Blumer in an entry for Frontpagemag.com. "It wants to bureaucratically create a de facto repeal of as much of the Second Amendment's clearly stated and correctly interpreted individual 'right of the people to keep and bear Arms' as possible by Jan. 20, 2017 and if that requires shredding what's left of the Constitution's separation of powers, so be it."

But Wednesday, Obama also turned to the Constitution and Declaration of Independence to support his case for gun reform, which includes calling on Congress to enact an assault weapons ban and universal background checks.

Freedom Food Certification 'sets bar very low' for Scottish Farmed Salmon

A Salmon and Trout Association report raises serious concerns over the RSPCAs Freedom Food certification scheme for farmed salmon.

A new Salmon and Trout Association (S&TA) report into the RSPCA / Freedom Food certification of Scottish farmed salmon details major concerns over the failure of Freedom Food to take proper account of the wider environmental impact of the accredited farms. Worryingly the report exposes the fact that some farms with a dismal record on pollution and parasite control are still granted Freedom Food status.

The Freedom Food logo is used extensively on supermarket packaging for farmed salmon and on salmon farming companies websites as an indication predominantly of good animal welfare practice, but also of good environmental stewardship. Freedom Food certification of farmed Atlantic salmon is overseen by an RSPCA/Freedom Food farmed salmon working group of 19 members, 15 of which are either fish farmers or from companies with a direct commercial interest in fish-farming.

It is estimated that Freedom Food charges between 800,000 and 1 million per annum for farmed salmon certification (made up of a licence fee and per kg charge), but as there is no published list of certified farms, this figure can only be an estimate.

Freedom Plaza initiates new award

By TBO.COM | Staff Published: January 16, 2013 Updated: January 16, 2013 - 12:00 AM

On Feb. 1 Freedom Plaza will host another Wear Red Day, joining the national effort to call attention to the prevalence of heart disease in women. As in last year's similar event, there will be a guest speaker, music, socializing, prize drawings and appropriate refreshments.

Last year's event also introduced an additional element to the concept of "heart," one referring to the nonphysical aspect of the word, its emotional connotations. Rationalizing that good deeds start "in the heart" with an impulse to perform an act of kindness without thought of recognition or reward, we sought out a resident who demonstrated that attribute.

With so many Good Samaritans at Freedom Plaza, the task was not easy. Eventually, we selected and at the Wear Red Day event publicly recognized Shirley Dawley for her heartwarming act. This is how it came about:

Borrowing both title and concept from the movie, "The Bucket List," Freedom conducted its own bucket list project. Residents were invited to submit their fondest, yet unfulfilled, wish for consideration.

The bucket filled fast. Some wishes were simple and uncomplicated, others more involved. One wish, however, was unique in that it was totally unselfish.

Shirley wished that Freedom Plaza pay for the Ruskin United Methodist Church's youth group to visit the Tampa Museum of Science and Industry. Such a wish proved irresistible and arrangements were made for the group to not only tour MOSI but be treated to a pizza party on the premises. Shirley happily hosted the excursion.

This year, nomination forms have been sent to all Freedom Plaza residents requesting their suggestion for a 2013 From the Heart award recipient. The winner will be feted at the forthcoming Feb. 1 affair and presented with our first From the Heart trophy.

We are indebted to Shirley Dawley for her generous, kind-hearted act, which inspired the award and motivates all of us to "love our neighbor as ourselves."

Freedom House assesses Serbia as “free country”

Source: Tanjug

WASHINGTON -- Freedom House NGO has given Serbia a status of a free country in its annual Freedom in the World 2012 report.

Countries of the region have been categorized as free and partly free countries. Serbia is in a group of free countries that have political competition, respect civil rights and freedoms and have independent media.

When it comes to the region, aside from Serbia, Croatia and Montenegro have also been given a status of free countries.

Bosnia-Herzegovina, Macedonia, Albania and Kosovo, which was rated separately from Serbia, are classified as partly free due to limited respect of political rights and civil freedoms. They are also plagued by corruption, lack of the rule of law, frequent ethnic and religious conflicts and their political scenes are dominated by a single party despite a certain level of parallelism.

Democracy around the world was in decline in 2012 for the seventh year in a row.

The Freedom House non-governmental organization found 90 countries now enjoyed full freedom, up from 87 nations in 2011, but 27 places saw new restrictions on rights of assembly, expression and the media.

Some three billion people, or 43 percent of the global population, enjoyed full political rights and civil liberties, while 1.6 billion resided in partly free countries, where there is only limited respect for freedoms in place, AFP has reported.

Around 34 percent of the world's population, or 2.3 billion people, however live in countries deemed to be not free.

Russia, Iran and Venezuela were singled out by the report.

Tim McGraw's 'Two Lanes of Freedom' Tour Kicks Off in May

Tim McGraw is heading back on the road this summer on the Two Lanes of Freedom tour, hitting 30 cities in North America between May and July. "Let's leave anything that might be weighing us down out in the parking lot and spend a few hours together feeling alive and free," McGraw says in the tour announcement.

With Brantley Gilbert and Love and Theft as supporting acts, McGraw begins his trek on May 2 in Birmingham, AL and will snake through the South, Northeast, Midwest and West Coast before wrapping up July 27 in Virginia Beach.

McGraw spent last summer on a 22-city co-headlining tour with Kenny Chesney.

The "Two Lanes of Freedom" album, McGraw's first on Big Machine, arrives Feb. 5. In this week's Billboard Cover Story, the country superstar calls the album "a watershed moment in my career. It's a time where I say, 'All right, let's see if I can go another step up. Let's see if I can find a deeper well in what I do artistically."

The album's first single, "One of Those Nights," has been steadily climbing the Billboard Country Songs chart, jumping 21-15 in the past week alone.

World freedom, measured and ranked

Whats the freest country in the world? Its New Zealand, according to Towards a Worldwide Index of Human Freedom, published by the Fraser Institute of Canada and the Liberales Institut of Switzerland. The rest of the top ten, in descending order: Netherlands, Hong Kong, Australia, Canada, Ireland, United States, Denmark, Japan and Estonia.

Americans like to think of their country as No. 1, and may wonder how it got marked down to No. 7. Part of it is crime: your freedom includes freedom from predators, which includes the government but also thieves, burglars, rapists, etc. We get hit for our crime rate. America is also marked down for extrajudicial killing and torturea reference, I assume, to the actions of our government overseas. The published articles that come with the study also consider the War on Drugs as a restriction on freedom.

Hong Kong is an interesting case. It is a "special administrative region," not a country, and it is only partly a democracy. Its governor is appointed by a committee appointed by China. But the study doesnt measure democracy.

Democracy and freedom are not the same things, the studys editor, Fred McMahan of the Fraser Institute in Toronto, told me. Democracy is a power relationship between the government and a group of people, and freedom is whether individuals are constrained in taking actions they would like to take.

Hong Kong scores the highest in the world in economic freedom, which is included in this study. The former British territory is marked down, among other things, because it does not recognize rights of same-sex couples.

Estonia is also notable for being in the top 10: The former Soviet republic is ranked as one of the freest places in Europe.

Its interesting where countries fall on this. Youd expect North Korea to be at the bottom, but it isnt ranked at all because there is too little data on it. Ditto Cuba. The countries at the bottom, starting from the bottom and going up, are Zimbabwe, Myanmar, Pakistan, Sri Lanka, Syria, Congo (Dem.Rep.), Algeria, Iran, Burundi and Cameroon. All are in Asia or Africa, and several are war-torn. The lowest-rated country in this hemisphere is Venezuela, ranked 109th. The lowest in Europe: Russia, 89th.

Interesting note: Israel is ranked 105th, making it less free than Russia. Also less free than Egypt, 96th, Jordan, 82nd or China, 100th. (Taiwan is 47th.) Israels defenders are always saying how democratic it is, but again, the study doesnt measure democracy. It measures freedom of the individual citizen, including freedom from violenceand, in Israels case, apparently that includes the occupied territories. Israel gets knocked down for torture, political imprisonment, sexual violence, assault, social hostility over religion and restrictions on freedom of movement, speech and assembly.

Indexes of this sort all depend on how you define and measure freedom, and, of course, you can argue with this one. The ideology of Fraser and Liberales is classical liberal, or broadly libertarian, which means they define freedom as lack of constraints on the individual: freedom from restraint, not freedom to be provided with schooling, medicine, etc. Its not a social-welfare scale, though I would guess most of the countries that score high on freedom do pretty well on that measure.

Freedom Watch sues over gun commendations

Published: Jan. 16, 2013 at 4:05 PM

WASHINGTON, Jan. 16 (UPI) -- The conservative activist group Freedom Watch is suing to block the sweeping firearms restrictions recommended by the White House gun violence task force.

Freedom Watch, based in Washington, argues the task force held illegal meetings with lobbyists and gave inadequate public notice, the Washington newspaper The Hill reported Wednesday.

"President [Barack] Obama and Vice President [Joe] Biden have thumbed their nose at the law and instead have been holding closed-door meetings with special interest lobbyists on both sides of the issue," said Freedom Watch founder Larry Klayman in a written statement.

The group filed a federal lawsuit in Florida, seeking to shut down the task force and block its proposals from implementation, the newspaper said.

The group maintains the task force violated the 1972 Federal Advisory Committee Act requiring presidential task forces to meet in public and publish notice of meetings in the Federal Register 15 days ahead of time.

The White House did not respond to a request for its reaction to the suit, The Hill said.

Obama outlined a package of gun-control legislation he wants Congress to pass and executive actions he intends to take in an attempt to ratchet down gun violence in the United States.
