Freedom of Religion at Stake: So much for 1Malaysia

Some individuals argue that it is wrong to allow them to do so because Christians do not subscribe to the view that Allah is One. If this argument were to be propounded, it would mean we are trying to shove Islamic beliefs down the throats of Christians.

Wan Hilmi believes that Malaysians should not be wasting too much time fighting on something which is a non-issue in the first place, especially when it has a potential of setting us apart.

Source: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/File:RELIGIONES.png

When a religious controversy arises, there will be a lot of hoo-ha among Malaysians no matter how unproductive it is to debate about it. While our Primer Minister Dato Seri Najib Razak and his cabinet members are trying so hard to promote unity through their 1Malaysia concept, there is, arguably, zero tolerance amongst Malaysians when it comes to religious and/or racial issues, despite the fact that we have been living together for more than 50 years. Does this show that the 1Malaysia concept has failed to achieve its objective?

The most recent controversy is the usage of the word Allah inBahasa MalaysiaBibles. From my humble opinion, this so-called controversy is supposedly a non-issue provided you have fairness, justice, rationality, and reasonableness in mind. Despite the clear provision of Article 11 of the Federal Constitution which guarantees freedom of religion, there are still individuals and bodies acting against it, showing how childish and foolish can some be. Majlis Agama Islam Selangor (MAIS), alongside with the Selangor Sultans decree, prohibited the usage of the word Allah by all Christians.

There are also certain individuals who claim Allah to be a term exclusive to Muslims only. The PerakMufti stated, Do not continue challenging, insulting Islam. It is submitted that Christians should not be prohibited from using the word Allah in theirBahasa Malaysia version of the Bible because to do so would be limiting and restricting the right of Christians to manage and practise their own religion. Just imagine if Muslims were a minority in Malaysia where they would be prohibited from calling theAdhanusing a loudspeaker, prohibited from performing Friday prayers as it causes traffic congestion would these prohibitions not be frustrating to Muslims, if they were to exist?

Freedom of religion, in my opinion, is not just about allowing any religion to be in existence. It also includes, but is not limited to, how religions are to be managed and practised by their respective followers. My argument is premised on two notions the Constitutional point of view and the Islamic point of view.

Source: http://saesm.deviantart.com/art/Allah-90141016

From the Constitutional point of view, it is absolutely clear that Article 11 of the Federal Constitution guarantees and protects freedom of religion. Article 11(1) states:

Freedom Trail marker to be unveiled in Greenwood

GREENWOOD, Miss. The Mississippi Freedom Trail will unveil Monday a marker commemorating the Black Power speech by Civil Rights activist Stokely Carmichael.

The ceremony is scheduled for 10 a.m. at Broad Street Historical Park in Greenwood.

Although the slogan black power had been used by prominent figures such as New York congressman Adam Clayton Powell and author Richard Wright, it became part of Americas lexicon in 1966 after Stokely Carmichael spoke at a Mississippi rally.

Carmichael and others, including the Rev. Martin Luther King Jr., had taken up James Merediths one-man freedom march, halted when Meredith was shot by a sniper. Meredith was the first black to attend the University of Mississippi.

On June 16, 1966, when Carmichael, chairman of the Student Nonviolent Coordinating Committee, was released from jail after being arrested for trying to pitch tents on the grounds of the Stone Street Negro Elementary School in Greenwood, Miss., he told a crowd he was frustrated with the slow pace of the freedom fight. Then he yelled:

What were gonna start saying now is black power.

An aide took up the chant. The crowd called back.

Black power became part of Americas lexicon. Historians say Carmichaels frustration was shared by many young blacks who had become disenchanted with Kings turn-the-other-cheek philosophy. King initially opposed the black power slogan. King initially opposed the black power slogan.

Freedom Riders come to Durham

This Black History Month, Strong School is hosting "Freedom Riders", an exhibition created by the Gilder Lehrman Institute of American History and PBS' American Experience. One of only 20 sites selected, the local community is indeed fortunate to have this museum-quality exhibit in town, and more fortunate to have talented and enthusiastic students to be the guides. Strong school students not only had the opportunity to learn this chapter of U.S. history, but have spoken before for the Board of Education to obtain permission to bring the exhibit to their school and have worked on publicity - flyers, posters, press releases, designing t-shirts, and some have been trained as "docents" or museum guides.

Emily Delgrego teaches U.S. history and humanities at Strong School. "I was very familiar with Gilder Lehrman as they have great resources for teachers," she said. "I applied to be an affiliate school to receive special invitations, posters, and lesson plans," Delgrego explained. She read about the traveling exhibit and wrote a grant to cover the fee to host the exhibit. Thanks to funding from the Coginchaug Valley Education Foundation, the exhibit is here for the community's enjoyment.

I had the privilege to sit down with five Strong School students who have studied and prepared to be docents of the exhibit, which opens to the public Feb. 26 and 28 from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m.

"The Freedom Riders took a head start on the civil rights movement," explained eighth grader Rowan O'Connell. The exhibition combines photography and news coverage of the 1961 Freedom Rides as well as "QR codes" that can be scanned with a cell phone for audio interviews, offering different perspectives (the Riders, the Kennedy administration, and the international community) of the movement. "People had tremendous courage to get on those buses," shared Brittany Hall.

From May until November 1961, 400 courageous Americans, black and white, men and women, from the North and South, risked their lives to challenge segregation by boarding buses and trains in small interracial groups, traveling through the deep south. This group of brave Americans became known as the Freedom Riders. Despite beatings, bitter racism and even imprisonment, their commitment to nonviolence laid the groundwork for some of the nation's most important civil rights legislation.

Danielle Quinley wonders "how different America would be if the Freedom Rides did not happen." The docents all expressed hope that people come out to see the exhibit. Brittany Hall would like everyone to learn more about the Freedom Riders, "and the struggle they went through to bring us freedom," added Skyler Morris. Lizzie Whitacker stressed their nonviolence, "it was important that [the Riders] could not fight back. But, they made an impact."

Quinley explained that the links in the exhibit, which provide great detail and "can help us better understand the civil rights movement," "and the roles played by people like President Kennedy and Martin Luther King," added Rowan O'Connell. "Today, most people are equal. Many people do not understand the struggle it took to get here," explained Morris. "We take our freedom for granted and forget the heroic actions of others that helped make it possible," O'Connell said. Whitacker explained the exhibit "is a timeline that explains how the movement started and moved, a chain reaction - one ride leading to another. This was a nonviolent movement - there was no fighting back, even if they were beaten."

It was Delgrego's intent that the event be student-centered, and proudly shared "the students' participation is fantastic." She said she hopes that people come out not only to enjoy the powerful exhibit, but to support these students who have worked so hard. "The 1961 Freedom Rides are an inspiring example of what ordinary individuals can accomplish. The actions and the bravery of the Freedom Riders provide invaluable lessons for our young people today, and for anyone who hopes to make a difference in our community, country, or world," Delgrego said.

O'Connell added, "it would mean a lot if people could come out the exhibit. We've worked hard, and it's really neat. We don't see a lot of museum exhibits in Durham."

Freedom Riders 1961 will be open to the public Feb. 26 and 28 from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. in the Strong School Library.

Freedom Trail marker to be unveiled Monday in Greenwood

MERIDIAN On Monday, at 10 a.m., the Mississippi Freedom Trail will unveil its latest marker at Broad Street Historical Park in Greenwood.

The marker commemorates the legendary Black Power speech by Civil Rights activist Stokely Carmichael and the subsequent adoption of the term Black Power by activists and citizens alike. This is the tenth marker on the Mississippi Freedom Trail.

Mississippi and her people played a pivotal role in the Civil Rights Movement of the 1950s and 1960s, said Malcolm White, director of the Mississippi Development Authoritys Tourism Division. The events that occurred in Greenwood in 1966 deserve the recognition that this Mississippi Freedom Trail marker offers. It also provides a valuable tool for educating future generations and commemorating our progress as a people.

On June 16, 1966, Student Nonviolent Coordinating Committee chairman Stokely Carmichael, released from jail after defying City of Greenwood orders by putting up tents to house participants of the James Meredith March Against Fear, made his famous Black Power speech in Broad Street Historical Park.

In front of an agitated crowd of roughly 600 people, Carmichael shouted five times, We want black power! The crowd became more and more enthusiastic. The popular slogan revealed a growing difference between the nationalist philosophy of SNCC and the more moderate stances of the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People and the Southern Christian Leadership Conference.

The Mississippi Freedom Trail is a cultural initiative designed to commemorate the states Civil Rights heritage. The trail offers a virtual tour of the state and those sites that played a key role in the Civil Rights Movement. Led by a task force of scholars, historians and veterans of the Civil Rights Movement, MDA Tourisms Bureau of Film and Cultural Heritage coordinated the taskforces work of selecting 25 initial sites for the trail from more than 300 submissions from communities around the state.

The first four markers were funded with donations from Tougaloo College, MDA and local private and public contributions and were unveiled in conjunction with 2011s Freedom 50th Foundation Reunion activities. The subsequent 25 markers are being funded through community funds and the 2010 Civil Rights Historic Sites Grant Program passed by the Mississippi Legislature (HB 1701) and administered by the Mississippi Department of Archives and History.

For more information about the Mississippi Freedom Trail, contact MDA Tourism at (601) 359-3297 or go to the states official tourism website, http://www.VisitMississippi.org.

Freedom Center Sees Great Success with New Niacin Detox Program

Freedom Treatment Center is a Southern Michigan alcohol and drug addiction recovery facility that focuses on natural methods of detoxification. One of its newest additions is the niacin detox program, which has already seen great success following its recent debut.

Albion, MI (PRWEB) February 23, 2013

ABC News reports on its ability to help raise levels of good cholesterol and unclog arteries, which can reduce the risk of coronary heart disease. The U.S. National Library of Medicine and National Institutes of Health further note that niacin is beneficial for the digestive system, the nervous system, the skin and converting food to energy. As such, niacin has been touted as a booster rocket for detoxification by the Natural News Network and has been met with much success upon its debut as one of the natural detoxification methods offered by Freedom Treatment Center.

Although the program is still new to our facility, we are already seeing the huge benefits, said Freedom Treatment Center Executive Director John Walser. Because the vitamin is water-soluble and not stored for long periods in the body, it is especially useful for flushing the system clean of built-up toxins following years of drug and alcohol abuse.

Freedoms niacin detox program works by taking doses of niacin at higher levels than the recommended daily allowance, which can result in an equal high number of benefits. In addition to the benefit to cardiovascular health and lowering bad cholesterol levels, niacin can increase good cholesterol levels, decrease triglyceride levels and dramatically lessen the overall risk of heart attack. A study known as the Coronary Drug Project was the first of its kind to report that heart attack survivors showed a decrease in subsequent heart attacks and strokes after taking 3000 mg of niacin daily over a 6-year period.

Our patients are looking for natural ways to restore their vitality and overall health, and our niacin detox program offers one more method for them to do so, said Freedom Treatment Center Senior Director Dominick Assante. We always work closely with our clients to ensure they follow our detox guidelines to reap the full benefits of what our natural treatment options offer.

Freedom Centers niacin detox program is the first step in the recovery process offered by the facility. While detoxification focuses on the body, other program elements focus on the mind.

Located in a semi-residential pocket of Southern Michigan, Freedom Treatment Center provides the soothing and safe environment and assistance so vital for helping people overcome drug and alcohol addiction. Treatment begins with a natural detoxification and continues with counseling, education and lifestyle changes that help ensure an ongoing and successful recovery.

Follow us on TWITTER: twitter.com Like us on FACEBOOK: http://www.facebook.com On Feb. 20th, in the European Parliament, US-based human rights organization Freedom House released "Freedom in the world 2013" report. China continued to be labeled as "Not Free". Freedom House analyzes the political and civil freedom of each country, classifying it from 1 to 7 . 1 point is the lowest, 7 is the highest. China received a 7 for political rights and 6 for civil liberties. This was rated the worst out of 187 countries. The report said that the bright spot in China was the determination of not only high-profile dissidents but also large numbers of ordinary citizens to assert their rights and challenge injustice. The Chinese Communist Party (CCP) Selectively Tolerant Of Christian Evangelists In Tibet On Feb. 22nd, the UK #39;s Guardian newspaper published an investigation report written by Jonathan Kaiman. The report said the CCP was thought to be selectively tolerant of Christian missionaries seeing them as a counterforce to Buddhists. The report said, since 1949, Mao Zedong declared western missionaries "spiritual aggressors" and deported them en masse. Proselytizing has been illegal in #39;China since then. Most of the 400 foreigners living in Xining, are missionaries. The report said, more than 10 people interviewed said that the CCP were selectively tolerant of missionaries. LOS ANGELES (TheWrap.com) - The Weinstein Company has acquired distribution rights to "Mandela: Long Walk to Freedom" in North America, Australia and New Zealand, the studio said Friday.

The biopic of Nelson Mandela's life draws on the anti-apartheid leader's autobiography of the same name and is directed by Justin Chadwick ("The Other Boleyn Girl") and produced by Anant Singh. William Nicholson ("Gladiator") wrote the script.

Shot in South Africa, the film stars Idris Elba ("The Wire") in the title role and Naomie Harris as his wife Winnie.

"I am extremely passionate about 'Mandela: Long Walk to Freedom,'" TWC Co-Chairman Harvey Weinstein said in statement. "Anant Singh first gave the book to me in 1994, when the first edition came out. We have been talking about making this film since 1999. There have been a number of stop and goes, but sometimes things work out for a reason, and Anant Singh has done a masterful job in producing this epic story of our times. Through Anant and Bob De Niro, I met Nelson Mandela, and it was one of the best experiences of my life."

The deal was negotiated in London by David Glasser and Michal Steinberg for TWC and Anant Singh and Alan Grodin of Weintraub Tobin for Distant Horizon. Pathe has acquired the UK and French rights and is handling international sales.

Freedom falls in girls basketball state semifinals

By NICK WILLIAMS | Tribune staff Published: February 22, 2013 Updated: February 22, 2013 - 6:28 PM

In the waning seconds of her team's Class 7A state semifinal girls basketball game Friday against Gainesville Buchholz, Freedom High senior forward Faith Woodard stared at the scoreboard, a glimmer of hope still dancing in her eyes.

Until the very end, Woodard and the Patriots battled Buchholz for an opportunity to play in the state title game, but time proved to be the enemy for Freedom down the stretch as its dream season came to an end in a 79-73 defeat.

Buchholz took a 58-39 lead with just more than 2 minutes remaining in the third quarter. Just as a comeback seemed impossible, Freedom went on a 29-14 run that extended into the fourth quarter to bring them within five with just more than a minute remaining. Senior Whitney Ivey Turntine cut Buchholz's lead to 72-67 on a 3-point basket, but the Patriots were forced to foul to stop the clock.

Buchholz (26-4) made 6 of 8 free throws in the final 55 seconds to seal the win and advance to the state championship.

Freedom, which was making its first state tournament appearance in program history, finished its season 25-4.

"A lot of teams down 19 in the state semifinals would have quit," said Freedom coach Laurie Pacholke.

Woodard, a 6-foot-2 forward who will play at Georgetown, played all 32 minutes and finished her high school basketball career with a double-double, leading the Patriots with 26 points and 15 rebounds along with three blocks. Sophomore Taylor Emery added 21 points, including 13 in the fourth quarter, and eight rebounds.

"Coming to this school with this team and this amount of talent, it was definitely something that I'll never forget," said Woodard, fighting back tears. "To know that we got this far, it means everything."

In the most recent state poll, Freedom was ranked the third overall best team in 7A while Buchholz ranked No. 7 according to the Florida Association of Basketball Coaches. On Friday, however, Buchholz's up-tempo style and defensive pressure disrupted Freedom's game plan.

Freedom Classic begins today

Freedom Classic Organizer Jenny Inabinet hangs bunting at Historic Grainger Stadium Thursday afternoon. While it was sunny Thursday, the threat of inclement weather has rearranged the schedule of the four-game baseball series between the U.S. Naval Academy and the U.S. Air Force Academy. Game 1 is today at 1 p.m.; Game 2 is Saturday at 5 p.m.; and a doubleheader begins at 10 a.m. on Sunday.

For the third year in a row, two of Americas finest academies will convene on Kinston.

For the second consecutive year, their baseball series will have to dodge the elements.

The third annual Freedom Classic this year a four-game series between Air Force and Navy begins at 1 p.m. today at Grainger Stadium.

The teams will square off Saturday at 5 p.m. and again with a doubleheader on Sunday morning beginning at 10.

Those times vary from the original schedule. Tournament organizers pushed todays opener up four hours and moved the doubleheader from Saturday to Sunday because most of the rain forecasted to fall in the area is predicted to fall during that time.

Rain caused Game 1 of the Freedom Classic to be postponed last year.

One thing about athletics, you cant control the weather, Kinston/Lenoir County Parks and Recreation Director Bill Ellis said. You do the best you can and then you go play.

Sunday is supposed to be beautiful so one great day out of the weekend wont be bad. Well still get them in and have a good time.

Ellis said he got the idea to bring the event to Kinston which is surrounded by military bases when his son, Kyle, played baseball at Navy from 2003-06 and was playing at East Carolina University.
