Freedom Rock to find a home in Monte

By J.O. PARKER joparker@dmreg.com

Ray Bubba Sorensen II and his Freedom Rock Tour will be leaving its mark on Montezuma.

Sorensen, who since 1999 has honored servicemen and servicewomen by painting a 60-plus ton roadside rock on Memorial Day in Adair County, is tentatively scheduled to paint a similar Freedom Rock in Montezuma.

The painting is part of the statewide tour Sorensen originated to paint a Freedom Rock in all of Iowas 99 counties.

Ron Hensel

Placing a Freedom Rock in Montezuma came about after a news report on the tour aired early last week on a Des Moines television station.

Ron Hensel, a Montezuma barber, said various community-minded individuals began circulating an e-mail promoting the idea of having a Freedom Rock in Montezuma.

Hensel took the idea a step further, approaching the city council at its June 17 meeting.

I thought it would be a good community effort, Hensel said. Montezuma should have a Freedom Rock, since we are known as the community of monuments. This would be a good acquisition.

The city agreed to fund the $1,000 deposit, overnighting a check and application to Sorensen on Tuesday, June 18.

Uganda press freedom under scrutiny

PARIS, June 27 (UPI) -- The United Nations said it was concerned about press freedom in Uganda in response to the alleged murder of a journalist for the New Vision newspaper.

The U.N. Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization reports New Vision journalist Thomas Pere was discovered dead just outside Kampala on the morning of June 17. He was last seen alive the previous evening when he left New Vision offices in the Ugandan capital.

UNESCO Director General Irina Bokova said the "murder" of Pere was an assault on press freedoms in Uganda.

"The murder of a journalist is a crime against the whole of society; an attempt to choke off democratic debate and muzzle the basic right of freedom of expression," she said in a statement Wednesday. "A clear message must be sent to the perpetrators of such crimes that their acts will not go unpunished."

Monitor Publications Ltd., parent company of Ugandan newspaper The Daily Monitor, issued an apology last month after its offices were raided by security forces. It said its editorial policy had been violated when it published a feature alleging orders were given to kill anyone who stated opposition to Muhoozi Kainerugaba, son of Ugandan President Yoweri Museveni.

UNESCO did not state the two incidents were related.

Kainerugaba this week denied claims he was being groomed to succeed his father.

Officials emphasize Freedom Fair safety

Freedom Fair officials have become more security-conscious after the Boston Marathon bombings and are asking for the publics help at next weeks event.

Keep an eye out for anything that looks suspicious, said Doug Miller of the Tacoma Events Commission. Help us by being attentive.

The jet-powered car Smoke-N-Thunder, which normally fires up its engine at Freedom Fair, will remain silent this year, Miller said. Officials were concerned that the noise and flame could alarm the public in the wake of the Boston bombings in April.

More than 100 Tacoma police officers will be on duty at Freedom Fair, most in uniform but some in plain clothes, spokeswoman Loretta Cool said. The numbers do not reflect a policy change from years past, she said.

Alcohol and fireworks are prohibited at Freedom Fair, and officers might ask to check backpacks and other containers. Those who refuse a search may be asked to leave, Cool said.

You cant have any fireworks down there, she said. We have zero tolerance. If we see fireworks, youre going to get cited and they will be confiscated. There will be no warnings. The fine is $257.

And that goes for anywhere in the city.

There is no such thing as safe and sane fireworks, Cool said. Not even sparklers. Anything you have to light is considered fireworks, and its illegal.

With huge crowds expected along the waterfront, children might be separated from parents and chaperones. Before attending the event, parents should instruct children to immediately seek out a police officer if they become lost, Cool advises. And parents should do the same if they lose a child.

Tacoma fire personnel will be on hand to provide first aid.

Budget cuts keep military from Freedom Fair air show

Tacomas Freedom Fair air show next week will fill the skies over Commencement Bay with aerobatic planes just not Raptors, Hornets and anything called Stealth.

Federal budget cuts resulting from sequestration and imposed by the Department of Defense have done what enemy forces only wish they could do: ground U.S. air power. The Defense Department has canceled military aircraft participation at air shows and other public events across the country and even at the recent Paris Air Show.

The Blue Angels, a staple at Seattles Seafair, will be a no-show at the August event for the same reason.

Nationwide, theres no military participation whatsoever (in air shows), said Doug Fratoni, Freedom Fairs air show coordinator.

It hasnt been easy, but Fratoni was able to keep the show at the usual two hours by increasing the number of civilian acts.

Crowds at Thursdays Freedom Fair still might see a C-17 over Commencement Bay but only if one of the giant planes is making a final approach to McChord Field as they do on most days.

Usually, one of the Globemasters can be counted on to thrill Freedom Fair crowds with a low flyby along the Ruston Way waterfront.

But not this year.

Last year, crowds were enthralled by the aerobatics of the nations most advanced jet fighter, the

F-22 Raptor. At one point, the stealth fighter joined up with a vintage P-51 Mustang for an intergenerational flyby. Thousands of cameras up and down the waterfront recorded the moment.

Freedom Meditech Announces U.S. Commercial Launch of ClearPath DS-120â„¢ Device to Measure Autofluorescence in the Lens …

SAN DIEGO, June 26, 2013 /PRNewswire/ --Freedom Meditech, Inc., developer of non-invasive ophthalmic products for the detection of disease and management of patient health, has launched the ClearPath DS-120 Lens Fluorescence Biomicroscope. Cleared by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) in January, the ClearPath DS-120 is a first-in-class, non-invasive tool designed to quickly and accurately measure autofluorescence through a six second scan of the crystalline lens of the eye. A significant number of independent peer-reviewed studies have suggested that elevated lens autofluorescence may be an early indicator of the presence of diabetes.

Nearly 104.8 million Americans have diabetes or pre-diabetes, costing an estimated $250 billion annually. Complications of diabetes including blindness, kidney failure and amputations can be avoided with early disease detection and intervention.

"There is a great need for early detection of diabetes beyond the currently available blood tests and doctor visits," said Daniel Einhorn, M.D., an endocrinologist with the Scripps Health System. "The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention have shown that almost 80 million Americans have pre-diabetes, a stage where intervention is most cost-effective. There is increased public awareness of this, and theophthalmic community could be at the center of one of the most important public health opportunities of our generation."

The ClearPath DS-120 produces a quantitative result that is immediately available to the optometrist and patient, and can be electronically transmitted to a patient or referral healthcare provider. The scan does not require a blood draw or pupil dilation. The device has a small footprint, sits on a table top, and employs an easy to use touch screen display that can be wirelessly linked to a practitioner's electronic medical record system.

"With over 100 million eye exams now performed in the U.S. annually, the eye-care provider is a gatekeeper for people within the age range when adult onset diabetes typically presents," explained Craig Misrach, Chairman and CEO of Freedom Meditech. "The ClearPath DS-120 has the potential to change the standard optometry visit and increase the role of the optometrist in the management of their patients' overall health."

Freedom Meditech will be hosting a Meet and Greet with Dr. Arthur Medina, O.D. (San Antonio, TX) and with attendees of the 116th Annual American Optometry Association Congress on June 27th at 4:00 p.m. at exhibit booth #1146. Dr. Medina will demonstrate the ClearPath DS-120 six second scan and present the real-time test results report. Demonstrations of the ClearPath DS-120 will be available throughout the AOA meeting June 27-30.

About ClearPath DS-120

The ClearPath DS-120 Lens Fluorescence Biomicroscope is cleared by FDA as a tool for the measurement of autofluorescence by scanning the crystalline lens of the eye with a blue light. In independent scientific studies published in peer-reviewed journals, elevated autofluorescence measurements have been linked to high levels of advanced glycosylated end products which accumulate as a result of the aging process and the presence of systemic disease.

The ClearPath scan is pain free, takes just six seconds and produces an immediate, quantitative result available to the patent and health care provider. Unlike some eye exams, the scan does not require dilation. The ClearPath is completely non-invasive and does not require a blood draw to produce a result.

What is Freedom?

by Advaita Mihai Stoian

Know the truth and the truth will set you free!

Freedom, a paradox of our world

One of the keywords of our world today is freedom. Many of the themes of discussion about our life systems are spinning around the concept of freedom. Freedom became nowadays even a trading value, reorganized comparing with the old era of slavery. But freedom is deeply related with other notions like responsibility, knowledge, compassion, sacrifice, and love. Some spiritual traditions are saying that freedom is a golden chain. Even if it sounds paradoxical this statement (the association between freedom and a chain even made of gold might sound like a paradox), just looking around us will give an unmistakable confirmation for it. In our world today, we are facing sometimes-paradoxical situations even greater than the golden chain of freedom. Today we are talking about notions like fight for peace or war on terror as part of our daily life concepts. If nowadays peace is obtained with fight and terror is cured with war than we should not be amazed that freedom is just another chain made of gold.

Let us take as an example how the idea of freedom develops for an individual. A newborn child is so charming because his spontaneity is coming from a freedom that is unspoiled by any personality yet. The amazed eyes of a little child express the best this state of inner freedom to abandon in the protective hands of life. When the child grows into a teenager the first notions about individuality, pleasure and ego comes into the attention. The first reaction is to liberate from the tyranny of the parents, the protective hands. The teenager has a strong impression that he needs to be free and this becomes his principle of living thus his first chain. In the name of this freedom he becomes anarchic. The way he walks, talks and dresses, expresses almost all 0f the time the tendency to contradict what he has learnt until then. In the case of the newborn child freedom was associated with total surrender, thus the child has this capacity to take everything as it is, being in the state of natural freedom.

The moment he grows up and become more aware about himself, he begins to be enslaved by the tendency to interfere and to impose his newly awakened will thus becoming an anarchist. He breaks the rules but he is not aware about the consequences of his acts or why those rules were in place. He exists at this level only to break the rules and freedom is often measured by the rules he have broken.Out of this attitude the teenager is making mistakes that hurt him and the people around. Due to this fact while reaching adulthood he is already wrapped into new sets of rules that are the results of the traumatic experiences from puberty. Gradually the anarchic freedom is replaced by the idea of responsibility. Trading freedom for responsibility leads the teenager to adulthood through a continuously growing labyrinth of rules and conventions. In this way, the so-called adulthood is just a set of predefined rules among which freedom is just one of them. Freedom becomes just a dry concept used to cover most of the time the fears we have in front of any form of superior authority. The responsible adults gradually lose their appetite for life because life is deeply related to freedom. Solving this apparently conflicting situation will become the reason for searching the truth. Nevertheless, while struggling with the self-imposed rules the adult begins to understand life and the more he understands it the more he values the power of the truth that brings back the ineffable feeling of freedom without killing the responsibility.First, the adult is squeezed from all the directions by the rules he assumed before, in the early years of his life. Trying to survive the routine of an responsible existence buried in rigid rules and conventions, the adult is forced to realize the limitations that are imposed by these rules and the freedom given by the truth in the shape of the right knowledge. Here begins the spiritual transformation.

Freedom and searching for the truth

From this moment on the individual is searching for the truth as a solution to solve the conflict between responsibility in life and freedom. Nevertheless, freedom has more to reveal. The first attempt will be to become an egoistic seeker for the truth, caring only about himself. When this attempts to find the truth will become a very rigid and sometimes painful practice of a doctrine, than in the soul of the aspirant and out of this spiritual suffering starts to grow love and compassion for all the beings around. Thus, the individual enters the Christic legacy of those that are free to love and to sacrifice for the good and happiness of their beloved ones.As we can see, freedom is an idea that constantly pushes us further in our evolution. We can say from this perspective that the only moments when we experience freedom is when we are on the path of transformation. Unfortunately these days we can see freedom associated with ignorance and thus turning into the strangest paradox.

This is the level that our civilization is at today. We can see clearlly this in the case of the concept in fashion preventive strikes! To see the whole absurdity lets complete the picture: after 2000 years of Christianity a doctrine based on the idea turn the other cheek we, the Christians, synthesized our experience in the idea better to strike first!!! Until now the church was imposing very strict ways to look upon different matters of life and the conflict situations where among them. It was the era of childhood. But nowadays we feel freer from the church doctrine (which failed to adapt to the rapid transformations in the world) and out of this freedom we created such an anarchic paradox! Moreover, we did that because we dropped the rules without replacing them with the proper knowledge. We are not ready to be free! In this way we proved to be in the puberty with our civilization, experiencing the difficult times of this period. If we look carefully, we can even see the teenagers pimples on George Bushs brain and heart expressing a reality for the most majority. Let us hope together that our humanity will get out of this puberty without hideous scars as a mark of our classes on freedom. Tantra the consciously assumed freedom solution to the modern freedom Today, freedom is reflected differently by the two fundamental currents: science and religion. If religion is asking us to believe without questioning its sets of values proposed, science is questioning everything thus ending up with a relative conclusion on anything. Caught in this dilemma the modern society is struggling between blindly assumed moral rules leading to rigidity and intolerance and complete denial of any need for moral rules making us lose the fundamental purpose of our life. Apparently, these two extremes cannot be conciliated. On one hand, religion is giving us a higher purpose in life and a certain direction but make this without any explanation by imposing rules that often cannot be understood. On the other hand, modern science is teaching us to dare to question anything but fails in finding a higher purpose for our life.Speaking from the point of view of freedom in the first case we are told what to do with our freedom but without being told how to get there and in the second case we are pushed to have the freedom which does not have a meaning. The ancient concept of tantra is giving here the genius solution. Tantra means network so the tantric system is the system that find the links and the correlations that exist between everything. The Tantric system brings the scientific method into the spiritual life creating in this way a form of spiritual science, which represents the synthesis between religion, and science. We can say from this perspective that tantra provides a staircase from slavery to freedom. The method used in tantra is the conscious approach on every experience of life. Experiencing life in full awareness will allow us to receive a very efficient feedback, to learn fast about the consequences of our actions and becoming in this way free of any fantasies, daydreams or illusions. As we previously saw, we lose our freedom when we blindly assume certain rules or when we blindly deny any rules. However, tantra is not saying dont eat that or eat only this but is saying, be aware that if you eat that you will have these consequences and if you eat this youll have these consequences. For this reason, tantra was often considered to be the science of life, linking in a harmonious whole net all the genuine science and all the genuine religious systems.Freedom in this way becomes a measure for our awareness, a result of knowing the truth, truth that is revealed by life itself once we wake up from the dream of our daily life. The tantric is not questioning everything but is experiencing everything in full awareness. The tantric is not taking anything for granted but is open to experience. In this way, tantra is replacing the dogma with life experience and dry theories with direct understanding. There is no more need for building a fence of taboos around something that is not good or is dangerous because with this new attitude we will know precisely what is not good or what is dangerous, what is harmonious or what is good. Life becomes a chain of spiritual lessons through which we get to know the Truth which will set us free.
