U.S. Bank Accepts Freedom Award in Washington D.C. Ceremony

Richard Davis, chairman, president and chief executive officer of U.S. Bancorp (USB), led a delegation of U.S. Bank employees to accept the Freedom Award from the Secretary of Defense and Employer Support of the Guard and Reserve on Thursday, Sept. 26, at a ceremony in Washington D.C.

U.S. Bank is one of only 15 companies chosen to receive this years award from 2,900 nominations. The Secretary of Defense Employer Support Freedom Award is the highest honor given to employers in recognition of the companys commitment to supporting National Guard and Reserve employees.

This week, we honor members of the National Guard and Reserve who carry that legacy forward, said President Barack Obama in a September 20 proclamation honoring the award recipients. We thank the employers who support them; and we reaffirm our promise to provide our troops, our veterans, and our military families with the opportunities they have earned.

It is inspiring and a great honor to be recognized by our nations leaders for the work that thousands of U.S. Bank employees have done and continue to do to make our company a great place to work for veterans and active duty soldiers, Davis said. We are humbled and deeply grateful for the service and sacrifice of our military families, and will continue to build a legacy of support for those who have given so much on behalf of our country.

The 2013 award recipients include large and small businesses, as well as public sector agencies that have gone above and beyond their legal obligations to military employees, offering formal and informal initiatives that ensure service members and their families are taken care of throughout all types of military service. The recipients measures of support included creating special hiring programs, providing personal support to families such as home maintenance, and continuing full benefits, salary and additional paid leave options during deployment.

U.S. Bank supports Guard and Reserve employees through the Proud to Serve program, a company-wide initiative focused on hiring and supporting service members and their families. U.S. Bank committed to hiring 1,000 service members and veterans by the end of 2013. U.S. Bank was also recognized for the Freedom Award for providing two weeks of additional paid leave to family members impacted by a deployment, among other military support policies. U.S. Bank currently employs more than 2,000 current and former members of the U.S. military.

In addition to its employment practices, which have been recognized by Military Times and G.I. Jobs, U.S. Bank has a number of banking services in place to support veterans and military families. The company offers military members its Platinum Package which entitles them to a full suite of benefits that include waived monthly maintenance fees on checking accounts and no annual fees on home equity lines of credit. U.S. Bank provides a dedicated customer service center and financial education resources specifically for military families. In 2013, U.S. Bank began a home donation program for veterans in need through nonprofits Military Warriors Support Foundation and Freedom Alliance.

$100 Million Freedom Fund to Combat Modern-Day Slavery

NEW YORK, Sept. 26, 2013 /PRNewswire/ -- Three leading anti-slavery activists and donors, Humanity United, the Legatum Foundation and Walk Free Foundation, today announced plans to launch the Freedom Fund, an ambitious seven-year effort to raise and deploy $100 million or more to combat modern-day slavery. The announcement was made at the annual Clinton Global Initiative in New York City.

The Freedom Fund is based on the investment approach of its founders and aims to leverage donor funds to significantly increase the impact of existing and new anti-slavery initiatives and enable the scaling up of successful programs globally.

The Fund will target specific areas of high prevalence using a 'Hotspot' funding model. It will also fund innovation through thematic program interventions which deliver impact across multiple regions. By coordinating the efforts and resources of actors throughout the sector, the Fund aims to measurably reduce modern-day slavery by 2020.

"Efforts to combat modern-day slavery have traditionally been driven by individual actors and organizations with limited funding, relative to the scale of this significant problem," said Randy Newcomb, president and CEO of Humanity United, a human rights foundation. "Our goal with the Freedom Fund is to unite those working in isolation in order to create scalable, lasting change for the estimated 21 million people living under the oppression of modern slavery."

The Freedom Fund will support a variety of actors in the non-profit sector, including international NGOs. There will be an emphasis on providing resources to grassroots organizations working on the front lines to free and rehabilitate survivors of trafficking. The official launch of funding is anticipated in 2014.

"People are surprised to learn that slavery still exists today. The Freedom Fund is a new abolitionist initiative that will work to finally eradicate this modern-day scourge. It will serve existing efforts, identify best practices and mobilize new resources," said Alan McCormick, a managing director from Legatum. "The structure of this fund has the potential to break the cycle of slavery for millions of men, women and children globally."

Humanity United, the Legatum Foundation and Walk Free Foundation have each committed $10 million to seed the Fund and will seek to extend the partnership to others who share the same passion and commitment to the cause. The partners' initial funding will be used to establish the organization and quickly begin directing resources to areas of need.

"What has been missing in the fight against modern slavery is a collaboration of effective resources and targeted efforts focused on outcomes," said Andrew Forrest, founder of Walk Free Foundation. "We invite those who share our vision to unite and become part of that solution."

Prior to the official launch in early 2014, the Freedom Fund founding partners will hire a CEO and develop a set of guiding principles, as well as funding and governance structures.

'Freedom fighter' a delusional old man: barrister

WANNABE freedom fighter Gerard Michael Little's own barrister described him as a delusional old man who harboured unrealistic fantasies of fighting in a war zone.

Little pleaded guilty yesterday in the Brisbane District Court to one count of preparing an incursion into a foreign state, a charge which carries a 10-year maximum jail sentence.

Little, who was educated at St Joseph's College in Toowoomba, was arrested at Brisbane International Airport in December, 2012, while attempting to board a plane to Port Moresby in Papua New Guinea.

He planned to island-hop his way to take up arms in the West Papua war zone. Australian Federal Police subsequently raided his daughter's and father's properties in Toowoomba.

The District Court heard Little had travelled to Crimea in the Ukraine in August, 2012, to undertake a five-day program at the International Law Enforcement Training Agency.

Little's barrister Craig Eberhardt told the court his client was in no way a freedom fighter.

He had rubbished the effectiveness of the five-day course.

"He is a broken-down, old man who was delusional," he said.

The court heard Little boasted on Facebook he was a colonel in the West Papuan freedom fighting movement.

Australian food manufacturer Freedom Foods has added two new products, quinoa long-life milk and gluten-free breakfast muesli, to its range.

The two new products both contain the increasingly popular grain quinoa. Freedom Foods said the new products are being launched in recognition of the United Nations declaration that 2013 is the Year of Quinoa.

We are excited to expand our portfolio of allergy-free products and provide the nations large community of healthy shoppers with a new and exciting way to consume this popular grain, he said.

The non-dairy Quinoa Milk also contains a popular ancient grain, Chia, which Freedom Foods says will provide Australias growing vegan community with a non-animal source of Omega 3 ALA. Freedom Foods says its new Quinoa Milk with Chia will capitalise on the strong growth occurring in the $130 million Australian Long Life Non-Dairy Milk market.

Freedom Foods said that while many products within the long life non-dairy segment use Malt Gluten as a sweetener, it had carved out a niche within the category as the only dedicated Gluten and Nut Free beverage brand in the market.

The Company said the new breakfast muesli, 3 Ancient Grain Muesli, was developed both to capture the growing interest in quinoa and the demand for fructose-free foods. The muesli also contains the grains sorghum and millet.
