Austria: Populist Freedom Party strong in EU vote – NBC40.net

By GEORGE JAHN Associated Press

LINZ, Austria (AP) - The beer's been flowing since early morning, the air is tinged with the smell of bratwurst and cigarette smoke, and the crowd is hyped. Hoots, whistling and frenetic clapping compete with chants of "H-C! H-C!" as the man of the moment bounds onto the stage.

The scene is something out of a pop concert. But the beer-tent hero is Heinz-Christian Strache, head of Austria's populist Freedom Party. And his message is putting a scare into the country's governing coalition ahead of EU Parliament elections.

Despite its Euroskeptic stance, the Freedom Party is only a few percentage points behind the Socialists and the conservative People's Party in the May 25 race for EU Parliament seats. That's in line with expectations of a generally strong showing of right-leaning populist parties in the EU parliamentary race.

But pollsters also say that if national elections were held now, the Freedom Party would actually win them, a stunning upset of the two establishment parties that have traditionally governed Austria.

The party's popularity clearly reflects unhappiness with the status quo. And that's hard to explain, when looking only at Austria's metrics.

Though inching up, unemployment remains among Europe's lowest at 4.9 percent. A tightly meshed social security net provides broad benefits. And even though taxes are high to fund such generous welfare, Austria is among the richest countries of the 28-nation European union, measured in take-home pay.

Ironically, that's part of the problem.

Many view their country as an island of prosperity threatened by hostile outsiders - Muslim refugees, cheap foreign labor, or Brussels-based "Eurocrats" looking to strip them from their national identity, while misappropriating their hard-earned money to bail out other EU countries. Domestically, many Austrians are suspicious of big banks, foreign business and establishment parties that they view as corrupt and unresponsive to the problems of the little man.

The Freedom Party knows how to exploit such fears, and Strache is in his element as he works his audience.

Same-sex marriage advocate opening Ohio offices

The Daily Briefing Buckeye Forum Podcast

The Dispatchpublic affairs team talks politics and tackles state and federal government issues in the Buckeye Forum podcast.

Freedom to Marry, the nations major financial backer of same-sex marriage, will spend at least $500,000 to open field offices in Columbus, Cincinnati, Cleveland and Toledo.

The campaign also will air television commercials in Ohio, but they will not focus on a prospective ballot issue to overturn the states 2004 ban on same-sex marriage, said Marc Solomon, national campaign director for Freedom to Marry.

Solomon said his organization will spend a total of $1.1 million on Ohio, Michigan and Indiana on same-sex marriage bids. Why Marriage Matters Ohio will operate the field offices.

Freedom to Marry prefers winning in the courts over putting the issue to voters, Solomon said in an interview.

We want to win. We want to prevail. We think we have a very solid chance of prevailing through the courts. Ballot issues are never our preferred way of going. As a matter of principle, we believe its never appropriate to define the rights of minority groups through what amounts to a popularity contest. In a practical, sense, ballot campaigns are very difficult, very expensive.

Solomon said if the issue does go to voters in 2016, Freedom to Marry would be 100 percent behind that. All of the work were doing now serves all these ends.

Freedom to Marry is part of the Why Marriage Matters coalition that also includes Equality Ohio, the American Civil Liberties Union of Ohio and the Human Rights Campaign.

FreedomOhio, the Ohio-based group, is not part of the coalition. FreedomOhio officials recently decided to not go to the ballot this year seeking to overturn the 2004 amendment to the Ohio Constitution that restricts marriage to one man and one woman, but to launch a new petition drive likely aimed at 2016.

Freedom Wars: The World of Panopticon

Its been a few weeks since we made the announcement for the North American release of Freedom Wars, and were overwhelmed with all the positive comments weve been seeing! Today, wed like to dive deeper into the world of Freedom Wars on PS Vita.

In PT Era 102014, the earth has been devastated by atmospheric pollution and the world is running out of resources. Human beings can only survive inside purpose-built facilities known as Panopticons. City-states across the world fight each other to take control of what is left, using these Panopticons to take over other competing regions. You take on the role of prisoner in this Panopticon facility, subject to a million-year sentence.

When the story begins, the main character finds himself in a cell with no recollection of where or who he is. An Android, also referred to as an Accessory throughout the game, is sent to brief him on his fate. The Accessory tells the protagonist that he must fight massive Abductors to reduce his million-year sentence. Abductors are mechanic monsters that roam the earth, abducting citizens. Its the players duty to work with your Accessory and other players to rescue civilians and take one step closer to freedom.

After taking a look at a few screenshots, youre probably asking yourself how youll be able to overcome these massive Abductors. That brings us to the weapons

In Freedom Wars, players will be able to use variety of weapons such as Swords, Rifles and Machine Guns. However, the most unique and valued weapon is the Thorn that is wrapped around the players arm. The Thorn can be used to retrieve accessories, hook on to enemies or walls, move vertically, travel quickly by pulling the character to where the thorn has been attached, tie down Abductors, and more.
