Wilders May Suffer Setback in Europe Vote, Polls Indicate

Geert Wilderss Freedom Party may lose support in todays European Parliament elections in the Netherlands, polls indicate, bucking a trend thats seeing support for anti-European Union groups rise elsewhere.

Amid the debt crisis thats roiled Europe, parties that share Wilderss anti-EU message are challenging for first place in countries such as the U.K. and France. In the Netherlands, while support has plunged for Mark Ruttes Liberal-led coalition with the Labor Party, the biggest beneficiary has been the D66 party, which is campaigning for a strong Netherlands in a strong Europe.

Polls this week showed the Freedom Party with enough backing for four of the 26 Dutch seats at stake, compared with the five they won in the last elections five years ago. D66 is on course for first place, taking five seats, the polls suggest.

Wilders sought this week to galvanize backing for his party by cutting a star representing the Netherlands out of an EU flag in Brussels. Im taking this star back with me to the Netherlands and theyre never getting it back from us in Brussels, he said in front of photographers and television crews outside the European Parliament.

The Freedom Party leader told reporters in The Hague last week that his aim was to form an alliance with similar-minded parties, including the U.K. Independence Party and Frances Front National, to repatriate powers to national capitals.

Voting takes place today in the Netherlands as well as Britain three days ahead of most of the 28-nation bloc. While no results can be published before voting ends on May 25, NOS television will be giving an indication of how the Dutch have cast their ballots when polls close at 9 p.m. local time.

A weighted average of polls conducted by TNS Nipo and published by PollWatch 2014 shows the Liberals and Labor are set to take seven of the 26 Dutch seats between them. Thats about half the level of support they got in the September 2012 general election, when they won a majority in parliament between them.

Finance Minister Jeroen Dijsselbloem announced 6 billion euros ($8.3 billion) of austerity measures last year on top of a previously outlined 16 billion-euro package. Ruttes coalition has been continuing to lose popularity after announcing cuts in health-care spending and changes to the pension system and the housing market.

The European elections could lead to more tensions within the coalition, Sarah de Lange, associate professor of political science at the University of Amsterdam, said in a phone interview.

New council staffer to keep freedom campers in check

John Kirk-Anderson/Fairfax NZ

NOT ALLOWED: Alleged freedom campers such as these on Sumner beach can expect to be reprimanded.

The Christchurch City Council is stepping up its monitoring of freedom campers.

After a summer marred by complaints about freedom campers behaving badly, the council has decided to hire a compliance officer who will be dedicated to ensuring they adhere to the rules.

Council inspections and enforcement unit manager Anne Columbus said the new position would be trialled from October through to March.

The officer would monitor freedom campers across the city and Banks Peninsula.

They would work 30 hours a week, including nights and weekends.

In the past 12 months the council has received a total of 49 complaints relating to freedom campers.

Some of those complaints related to overseas tourists who were freedom camping; others related to homeless people who were freedom camping rather than trying to find appropriate accommodation.

Columbus said the latter was frequently being observed in and around surf clubs and public car park areas alongside New Brighton beach.

Freedom Martial Arts in Bridgewater teaches children to be safe

BRIDGEWATER - In todays fast-paced world, parents face constant challenges when trying to keep their children safe. Freedom Martial Arts of Bridgewater, teamed up with the Empower Family Success Center to host a public community event on May 15 that taught children valuable life skills and inspired family togetherness.

30% of students in the U.S., grades six through ten, are involved in moderate or frequent bullying, according to the National Institutes of Health.

Martial arts reinforce anti-bullying tactics that help build a childs confidence and teach them how to respond properly to any potentially harmful situations.

A lot of it is educating what a stranger is, said Kyle Freeman, owner of Freedom Martial Arts, most children are unaware that a perpetrator could also be someone they know. Theres no need for kids to be scared. We aim to teach them self confidence.

Parents were able to see the effect of one martial arts lesson on their family. Hiyah! yelped Bryson, 5, today was fun! he said smiling before his attention went back to decorating his new martial arts headband. Ruth Prothero, who frequents the monthly Empower Family Fun Nights with her four children said, I enjoy bringing my kids to these events. Its nice to meet families that I wouldnt have gotten to know without Empower.

The Empower Family Success Center, a part of the Somerville based non-profit EmPoWER Somerset, works with local businesses and organizations to provide free family activities across Somerset County. We hold monthly family fun nights so people can be introduced to our organization. Then if theres ever a time when a family faces a challenge, they know were here to help connect them to resources, said Tim Wolf, Director of the Empower Family Success Center.

Before the karate kids headed out for the evening, they left with two large scoops of Ritas Ice, kindly donated by Ritas Ice of Somerville and EA Boniakowski Insurance. Thanks to Freedom Martial Arts and the Empower Family Success Center, children walked away with a little more confidence and belief in themselves.

Sorensen begins painting The Freedom Rock

GREENFIELD Ray Bubba Sorensen II, artist of the Freedom Rock in Adair County, has begun painting for the 16th year. In honor of Memorial Day, Sorensen repaints this 12-foot tall, approximately 60 ton national landmark to pay tribute to military men and women.

Sorensen started painting the original Freedom Rock the week of May 5.

This year Sorensen will be using a different type of paint, the same paint used on the Iowa Freedom Rock tour.

In order to use this specialty paint, Sorensen had the entire Freedom Rock sandblasted.

It was bittersweet to see all of those years sandblasted, Sorensen said, but Im really excited to showcase some new and different styles in my artwork with the paint Im going to use.

The only section not sandblasted was the north side of The Freedom Rock, which features the green Huey Helicopter containing the remains of nearly 60 different Vietnam Veterans.

Although it is Sorensens 16th annual year of painting the original Freedom Rock, this is Sorensens second year on the Iowa Freedom Rock Tour.

This year, Sorensen has already painted Freedom Rocks in Audubon County in Kimballton and Hancock County in Britt.

This year, Sorensen will make stops in Carroll County Manning, Jasper County Sully, Marion County Knoxville, Guthrie County Guthrie Center, Calhoun County Rockwell City, Page County Clarinda, Taylor County Blockton and Wapello County Ottumwa.

Sorensen is not commissioned for his work on the original Freedom Rock in Menlo, but works as an independent mural artist for the Iowa Freedom Rock tour. Sorensen is only able to complete about 10 rocks per year, because of scheduling and weather.
