Freedom of religion? Mosque debate in Georgia town reveals sharp divide

WILLIAM BRANGHAM: Nasser Omer is an accountant, husband, and father of two grown kids. This Indian-American is also a devout Muslim and as such, he tries to get to his nearest mosque as often as possible to pray.

NASSER OMER: For Muslim men, it is mandatory to pray five times a day in congregation. That is the reason we need to go to the mosque.

WILLIAM BRANGHAM:Omer lives in Kennesaw, Georgia, a rural community of about 30,000. Its just over 25 miles northwest of Atlanta. a quiet town one where confederate flags fly freely. There are at least 40 churches in Kennesaw but no mosque, so Omer one of perhaps a hundred Muslims in town has to drive to the neighboring town of Marietta where there are a couple mosques.

How far is the nearest mosque for you to go to now?

OMER NASSER: Its about ten miles from here. And it takes about 30 minutes from my home to the mosque, one way. After the prayers, again, 30 minutes to come back.

WILLIAM BRANGHAM:A few months ago, Omer and a few other Muslim families decided theyd like to open their own small mosque in their own town. They found this strip mall it had multiple vacancies, the price was right and so they filed the paperwork to open a small storefront mosque right here. This Pentecostal Church had done something very similar a few months before. To help them with the process, they enlisted a local Muslim community leader Amjad Taufique hed helped set-up another mosque in Marietta.

So, why does Kennesaw need a mosque?

AMJAD TAUFIQUE: Well, I mean, Muslims try to make it five times a day to the mosque and in this day and age, its a little difficult to be there five times a day. But usually, if you are close enough five, ten minutes drive you can go there early in the morning prayers, in the evening prayers at least. And you build up the community.

WILLIAM BRANGHAM:At first, the application process was routine. The zoning board okd the idea, but as word got out about the proposed mosque, some opponents showed up in force at the next planning commission meeting. Cris Eaton Welsh who thinks the mosque should be approved sits on the Kennesaw City Council.

CRIS EATON-WELSH: From my understanding, there were over 200 people that showed up to the meeting, and there

Freedom Pre-filters Keep Out Debris

December 19, 2014 - Products

Freedom Air Filters developed a new cabin air filter pre-filter for Freightliner FLD 120, Classic 1988 and new truck models. The pre-filter is designed to keep debris from truck air filters.

The new pre-filter is the third cabin air filter product released this year and Freedom says that new pre-filters are expected to launch in the first quarter of 2015.

Freedoms pre-filters can catch particles as small as .005 inches, which the company says extends the life of an air filter. They are made of 1/8 inch-thick ABS plastic and are designed to keep out particles of rubber, dirt, sand and grain chaff from the pleats of an air filter element.

They also feature a proprietary polyester mesh with uniform micron openings and are treated with a hydrophobic water repellant process for added protection. Also, pre-filters can be used multiple times because they are easily cleaned with soap and water.

Freedom Stores to Provide Consumer Redress for Illegal Debt Collection Against Servicemembers

Freedom Stores to Provide Consumer Redress for Illegal Debt Collection Against Servicemembers

The CFPBs investigation found that Freedom Stores, Inc., Freedom Acceptance, and Military Credit Services and the owners, John Melley and Leonard Melley, Jr., engaged in illegal debt collection practices in violation of the Dodd-Frank Wall Street Reform and Consumer Protection Act. These illegal practices include:

Under the terms of the consent order filed Thursday, the defendants would be required to provide over $2.5 million in relief to consumers harmed by the companies illegal actions, and to pay $100,000 to the CFPBs Civil Penalty Fund. The defendants would also be barred from further violations of the law and subject to monitoring by the CFPB.

The Bureau and the states complaint is not a finding or ruling that the defendants have actually violated the law. The proposed court order has been filed with the U.S. District Court for the Eastern District of Virginia and will have the full force of law only when signed by the presiding judge.

Online freedom is declining

A new report from Freedom House, a watchdog dedicated to promoting the cause of freedom across the globe, has been published with some interesting observations on how free various nations are in terms of their internet access.

The Freedom on the Net 2014 report, spotted by Mashable, involved evaluating some 65 countries, and the bad news is that over half of them, 36 to be precise, actually dipped in their levels of online freedom between May 2013 and 2014.

The report also observed an overall increase in pressure from governments on independent news websites --the sites which have heretofore been among the few uncensored sources of news in some countries. And more people have been arrested and/or prosecuted for digital activities than ever before.

Freedom House noted: "Dozens of citizen journalists were attacked while reporting on conflict in Syria and anti-government protests in Egypt, Turkey and Ukraine. Other governments stepped up licensing and regulation for web platforms".

Arrests due to online messages concerning political or social issues were found in 38 of the 65 studied countries, and this was most prevalent in the Middle East and North Africa, where detentions of citizens occurred in 10 of the 11 nations examined.

Freedom House also found that 41 of the countries had passed legislation (or at least proposed it) to penalize "legitimate forms of speech online", and to expand government surveillance powers (no surprise there).

The report observed an increase in sophisticated, targeted malware attacks on human rights groups and critics of governments, with such attacks being seen in half of the nations evaluated.

It makes for pretty bleak reading in many respects, though on a more positive note, Freedom House did state: "Despite overall declines in global internet freedom, pushback by civil society was amplified this year by reactions to the NSA surveillance revelations. Awareness of the threats to fundamental rights expanded beyond civil society, as ordinary users around the world became more engaged in securing their privacy and freedom of expression online".

"In select cases, long-running internet freedom campaigns finally garnered the necessary momentum to succeed", added Freedom House.

Facebook helps San Antonio animal shelter find Freedom, the bald eagle

A San Antonio animal shelter is thanking the social media heavens after posts on Facebook helped in the recovery of an American Bald Eagle that escaped early Tuesday.

Staffers were working with the eagle, Freedom, at the Last Chance Forever The Bird of Prey Conservancy when the bird flew away. Officials quickly spread the word on Facebook and asked them to keep an eagle eye out for the patriotic bird.

The shelter found Freedom sometime after 5 p.m. Wednesday after some residents at a North Side apartment complex spotted the bird and immediately called the shelter.

I think social media God and Santa Claus rocks! shelter director John Karger told FOX 29. Because you know, who are you going to ask for when you need so many favors?

Freedom will continue training at the conservancy in order to prepare herself for independent living in the wild. Shell be wearing a GPS tracking device once shes released, but it seems self-evident that Freedom cannot be contained.
