Stomach bloating: The best diet and supplement to help reduce your bloat – Express

Stomach bloating is synonymous withoverindulgence. People describethe feeling as if the belly has been stretched or puffed out which is usually accompanied with gas and pain. Typically, bloating subsides overtime, however, during the experience it can be extremely uncomfortable.Nutritional therapist for Bio-Kult,Hannah Brayspoke exclusively withExpress.co.ukaboutwhy we bloat and what actions we can do to prevent it.

Mrs Bray said: There are a number of possible causes of bloating and numerous ways to reduce the symptoms.

Ultimately, bloating can be viewed as a sign that the digestive system is not working optimally.

The first and potentially most important advice for anyone suffering with bloating is to ensure they are prepared for eating.

This means relaxing, turning off all distractions, sitting in a comfortable position and ideally gazing out through a window.

Prepare your food from scratch, the smells kick-start your digestive enzymes.

Choose foods that are easy to digest such as soups, stews, salads and smoothies."

When asked whether food intolerances cause bloating, Mrs Bray answered: Sensitivities to certain foods can be a big driver for digestive symptoms such as bloating.

Play detective and keep a food diary of what you eat and any symptoms you experience to see if you notice any patterns.

Alternatively, consider an elimination diet, where commonly aggravating foods, such as gluten and dairy are removed for two to three weeks, before being re-introduced one at a time and monitor reactions.

Whilst dairy and gluten are the most common food intolerances which may lead to bloating, another food group to be aware of is fermentable fibres, said Mrs Bray.

These foods are sometimes referred to by the acronym FODMAPs (Fermentable Oligo-, Di-, Mono-saccharides and Polyols).

Fruits, vegetables, legumes and pulses are sources of FODMAPs with certain ones being higher than others.

These fermentable fibres are not absorbed by the body and stay intact through the small intestines to then act as a food source for the bacteria in the gut.

Many people see immediate improvements by avoiding processed foods and instead focusing on foods prepared and cooked from scratch.

Choose good quality proteins (oily fish, grass-fed meats and lentils), healthy fats (nuts, seeds, avocadoes and olive oil) and low FODMAP vegetables such as carrots, kale and courgettes until the gut flora is rebalanced.

Add in spices and warmth to your food and drinks, such as ginger, turmeric and chilli, which help to aid digestion.

Natural digestive enzymes taken before food can help to improve the breakdown of food, increase stomach acidity and improve absorption of nutrients.

Consuming a tablespoon of apple cider vinegar (with the mother containing the original bacterial cultures) in a small glass of water in the mornings and bitter greens, such as rocket, as a starter or with the meal can both help to improve absorption.

What are the health benefits of turmeric? – WTOP

In addition to enhancing flavor and color, turmeric has long been revered for its therapeutic benefits.

If youre looking to eat your way to better health, dont forget the spice cabinet. In particular, one vibrant yellow-orange spice called turmeric has garnered headlines for its apparent ability to supply a range of health benefits.

Turmeric is a popular spice, sometimes known as the golden spice, thats derived from the root of the turmeric plant, says Reema Kanda, a registered dietitian nutritionist with the Hoag Orthopedic Institute in Irvine, California. Part of the ginger family, turmeric hails from India and Southeast Asia and shows up frequently in cuisine from that region.

In addition to enhancing flavor and color, turmeric has long been revered for its therapeutic benefits. As such, its a key ingredient of certain Ayurvedic and Chinese medicines. These two eastern health practices have used turmeric for treatment of pain and inflammatory disorders for centuries, Kanda explains.

Health Benefits

More recently, western medicine has started to study this spice to better understand its benefits because it seems there really could be something to using turmeric for a variety of health benefits, including:

Inflammation: reducing systemic inflammation and increasing the bodys ability to resist the effect of free radicals, chemical compounds that essentially age cells and can contribute to the development of chronic diseases.

Arthritis: relieving joint pain associated with arthritis. The Natural Medicine Database reports that taking 500 milligrams of turmeric two to four times daily for four to twelve weeks can help ease symptoms that accompany osteoarthritis, Kanda says.

Cognition: increasing levels of brain-derived neurotrophic factor, a brain hormone that can help keep your brain more nimble and better able to fend off age-related cognitive decline and dementia.

Blood vessels: improving the ability of the lining of the blood vessels to repair themselves, which could reduce blood pressure, risk of blood clots and strokes and the risk of heart disease.

Cancer: slowing or halting the growth of cancer cells. Turmeric is anti-inflammatory and antioxidant, which means its anti-cancer, says Daryl Gioffre, a celebrity nutritionist and author of Get Off Your Acid: 7 Steps in 7 Days to Lose Weight, Fight Inflammation and Reclaim Your Health and Energy. Many types of cancer thrive on inflammation throughout the whole body, and theres a growing body of evidence that suggests turmeric might one day be used as not just a prevention, but also a treatment for cancer.

Immunity: boosting the immune system. Turmeric has prebiotic-like properties, which enable it to positively influence gut microbiota, supporting the gut-immune connection, says Acacia Wright, a registered dietitian at Orgain, a clean protein brand based in Irvine, California. Prebiotics are a kind of indigestible fiber that feed probiotics the healthy microorganisms that live in the gut and contribute to a range of bodily functions and overall wellness. Improving the gut microbiome may make you less susceptible to a variety of infections and diseases.

How Turmeric Works

Turmeric provides a solid dose of phytochemicals plant compounds that help fight inflammation and oxidative stress, or the daily wear-and-tear our bodies endure every day. In addition, this spice contains plenty of vitamin C, which can boost the immune system, and is a good source of manganese, iron and potassium.

But when it comes to health benefits, turmerics biggest selling point is its hallmark compound: curcumin.

Research has indicated that curcumin may play a protective role in fighting inflammatory disease by helping reduce the bodys inflammatory response to everything from food and drink to stress and pollution. Kanda says this is important because chronic inflammation promotes many disease states, including:

Obesity.

Diabetes.

Cardiovascular disease.

Neurodegenerative diseases, including Alzheimers disease and other forms of dementia.

Inflammatory bowel diseases, such as Crohns disease and ulcerative colitis.

Certain types of cancers, including colon cancer.

Arthritis.

Depression.

Asthma, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease and other chronic lung diseases.

Allergies.

Autoimmune disorders.

Evidence supports that phytochemicals from natural foods such as spices and herbs are safe and effective therapies to potentially help reduce inflammation and can possibly be beneficial in prevention of inflammatory diseases, Kanda says, though she adds that further large-scale scientific evidence is still warranted to identify turmerics long-term effectiveness.

Supplement Considerations

Overall, it seems that turmeric is a great spice to add to your cooking and possibly even as a supplement though many nutritionists, dietitians and doctors agree that its generally better to get all your nutritional needs met via whole foods rather than relying on supplements.

However, Kanda notes that research into the health benefits and potential risks of turmeric is still evolving. More work needs to be done until we know for certain how turmeric works, what the right dose is to prevent or treat certain conditions and whether there are any long-term drawbacks to using turmeric for health reasons.

One difficulty with turmeric is establishing how much of the curcumin is actually bioavailable, or able to be used by the body. Most of the compound is excreted in feces and only traces appear in the blood, Kanda notes. What this means is more research is needed for identifying methods in improving the bioavailability by various delivery systems into the body.

One thing that is known is that piperine, black peppers signature compound, can boost absorption of turmeric by 2000% according to some research. If youre opting for a curcumin supplement, choose one that also contains piperine, which is often sold under the name BioPerine.

Kanda notes that if youre supplementing with turmeric, be aware that some people who have consumed high levels of turmeric extracts have reported some mild side effects including stomach upset, dizziness or diarrhea. If you have anemia or low levels of iron, you should probably not be taking high doses of turmeric as it may inhibit the absorption of iron from your diet.

And if youre going to have surgery, consider skipping the turmeric supplement for a while beforehand, as high doses of turmeric supplements have been associated with slower blood clotting. This could cause more bleeding during and after surgery.

As with all things related to supplements, be sure to speak with your doctor before you start taking anything to make sure there are no adverse interactions with other medications or supplements you may be taking and to make sure that supplementation makes sense for you.

[See: The Best Spices for your Health.]

Cooking With Turmeric

While science is still working out the particulars of supplementation, Kanda says we can all reap the benefits of turmeric by using whole or ground dried turmeric in cooking. Try adding it to poultry, seafood and lentil-based dishes to enhance color and as a flavor accent. You can sprinkle it in any dish along with your other favorite seasonings, such as thyme, cumin or garlic. And if you enjoy mixing marinades, try adding turmeric.

You can also add it to healthy drinks such as smoothies or teas. Golden milk is a delicious mixture of milk and turmeric that also provides protein and calcium.

Tropical Turmeric SmoothieWant a tropical turmeric treat? Kanda offers the following mango turmeric smoothie recipe thats easy and delicious:

1/3 cup plain yogurt.

1/3 cup almond milk.

1/2 inch peeled, fresh ginger root.

1/2 inch peeled turmeric root (substitute with 1 teaspoon turmeric powder if you cannot find fresh turmeric).

The Use of Dietary Supplements in the Treatment of Diabetes – Diabetes In Control

Thousands of dietary supplements are available for diabetes treatment, but an examination of available studies found that only three ingredients had consistent evidence to support their claims.

In the United States, dietary supplements are a multi-billion-dollar industry, having generated more than $30 billion in sales in 2016, which is projected to double by 2024. The allure for investing in these products originates from a lack of government oversight by agencies like the US Food and Drug Administration. Unlike pharmaceuticals, the FDA does not require evidence of efficacy and safety before a supplement reaches the market. The result is countless products flooding the market with claims to promote health. Little regulation is in place to confirm the validity of these claims, aside from the FDA preventing such products from using statements claiming to treat, prevent, or cure a disease. Because of this, supplement use among Americans remains high, despite limited evidence supporting their use....

Finally, Good News about Diarrhea! It Starts with Fiber – The Great Courses Daily News

By Roberta H. Anding, MS, Baylor College of Medicine and Texas Childrens HospitalEdited by Kate Findley and proofread byAngelaShoemaker, The Great Courses DailyMany people arent aware that the type of fiber that you add through your food choices can prevent chronic diarrhea issues. Photo By Antonina Vlasova / ShutterstockHow Fiber Treats Diarrhea

One benefit of a high-fiber diet is regulating your bowel function and easing constipation, as fiber adds bulk to your stools. Fiber can also be used to treat diarrhea.

Fiber can lessen or prevent diarrhea by solidifying loose and watery stools, depending on the type of fiber that you take in. If you take a water-soluble (gumming or gelling) fiber such as that found in oatmeal, it adds bulk to the stool, but it also holds water.

I worked for years in the HIV populationindividuals who have AIDSand one of the hallmarks of AIDS is chronic diarrhea, Professor Anding said. How do we blunt that diarrhea? How do we get that water to hold?

They would use pectin, whichif youre familiar with making jellyis the water-soluble fiber that helps that fluid to gel. Professor Anding and her team would add the pectin to water, and when it got to the large intestine, it would help to hold some of that water in place.

Diarrhea is the excessive loss of body fluid, and this technique helped to manipulate that gut physiology by manipulating the type of fiber that you could use to make sure you had optimal functioning.

I could blunt some of the fluid losses in my clients who had HIV disease by getting that water held in the large intestine, Professor Anding said.

In order to successfully treat diarrhea using water-soluble fibers, though, these fibers must have, as part of their matrix, adequate amounts of fluid. The primary role of the large intestine is to regulate fluid balance, so if you dont have enough fluid, and youre taking a water-soluble fiber, you can actually end up with an impactiona worse-case scenario of too much fiber in the absence of fluid.

An impaction occurs when a hardened mass of stool is unable to pass through the colon. Therefore, if youre consuming large amounts of fiber, you must stay properly hydrated.

In fact, dehydration can often contribute to constipation. Keeping this precaution in mind, though, gelling agents such as pectin can effectively treat diarrhea.

About 20 years ago, the BRAT diet was commonly used for the treatment of diarrhea. It consists of bananas, rice, apples, anddepending on whose research you readtea or toast. This diet provides predominantly water-soluble fibers for the management of any kind of gastrointestinal disorderin this case, diarrhea.

The BRAT diet can also help to promote digestive health in other ways, such as lowering the risk of hemorrhoids. If youre not straining to have a bowel movement, youre much less likely to have hemorrhoids.

Although there are many fiber supplements currently on the market, Professor Anding recommends that you eat a variety of high-fiber foods to prevent constipation and diarrhea. The American Dietetic Association is stressing to all consumers that the best benefits of fiber come from the food that we eat and not necessarily supplements.

For many people, thoughparticularly young childreneating a diet full of high-fiber foods may be challenging. Given the list of foodswhich includes celery, beans, oatmeal, apples, and peasthere are going to be many children who reject those foods or prefer those foods in a more processed form.

The processed forms of fiber dont necessarily contain the same benefits as whole foods. For example, fiber benefits can be found in both applesauce and in apples, but the apple filling that is found in many energy bars and cereal bars is closer to a jelly.

According to Professor Anding, this jelly filling is not a good source of fiber. Therefore, if you have a child in the family who doesnt like apples, you should not swap out the apple for the apple filling in a toaster strudel.

However, you can offer applesauce as an alternative, as it is still an acceptable source of fiber. Similarly, you can offer more appealing versions of other high-fiber foods by adding nuts and raisins to oatmeal or making cauliflower mashed potatoes.

Professor Roberta H. Anding is a registered dietitian and Director of Sports Nutrition and a clinical dietitian at Baylor College of Medicine and Texas Childrens Hospital. She also teaches and lectures in the Baylor College of Medicines Department of Pediatrics, Section of Adolescent Medicine and Sports Medicine, and in the Department of Kinesiology at Rice University.

The medical foods are easy to access, as they do not require a prescription but are necessarily consumed under a medical supervision. In case of inborn errors of metabolism, medical foods are used as treatment options, and the products available in the market are regulated under authoritative and regulatory food and diet supplement statuses.

The nutritional treatment for inborn errors of metabolism provides between 85% and 90% of nutritional requirement for a person suffering from a particular inherited disorder. Moreover, there are almost negligible side effects of these supplements, making them ideal for consumption for patients of all age groups. In recent years, the private medical insurers in the US and a few other countries are also offering reimbursement programs for the consumption of certain medical foods. Thus, the rising adoption of medical food and nutrient supplements is expected to foster the market growth during the forecast period.

The global medical foods for inborn errors of metabolism market is segmented on the basis of product, age group, disease, form, packaging, distribution channels, and geography.Based on product, the medical foods for inborn errors of metabolism market is segmented into amino acid, glytactin with GMP, amino acid-modified infant formula with iron, low-calcium/vitamin D-free infant formula with iron, low protein food, and others.

Furthermore, the number of patients suffering from amino acid disorders is significantly higher leading to rising demand for these products during the forecast period.Based on age group, the market was segmented into infants, weaning, adolescents, and adults.

Based on disease, the market was segmented in to Phenylketonuria (PKU), Maple Syrup Urine Disease (MSUD), Homocystinuria, Urea Cycle Disorders, Methylmalonic Acidemia, Organic Acidurias, Propionic Acidemia, Isovaleric Acidemia, Disorders of Leucine Metabolism, Glutaric Acidemia Type I, Renal Disease, Tyrosinemia Types I and II, and Others. Why antioxidants are so important to your overall health – Insider – INSIDER

Antioxidants have generated quite the buzz in recent years as a category of substances known to delay cell damage. While research indicates that antioxidants can reduce inflammation, it's still unclear exactly how this correlates with overall health.

Plus, antioxidant supplements aren't necessary if you're eating a healthy diet, and can be dangerous in some cases. For example, too much beta-carotene the chemical that makes carrots and sweet potatoes orange can increase the risk of cancer if you smoke.

In this article, we discuss what researchers know so far about the role of antioxidants and how to get enough in your diet.

Antioxidants are substances found in plant foods, such as fruits, vegetables, pulses, coffee, and tea, along with supplements. They're essential to your health because antioxidants can prevent or delay cell damage caused by free radicals.

Free radicals are a normal byproduct of human life. For example, you produce them naturally in the form of lactic acid when you exercise. Free radicals can also come from outside sources like cigarette smoke, air pollution, certain medications, and sunlight.

The problem with free radicals is that they bind to cells in such a way that they damage the protein and DNA inside. However, that threat can be neutralized by antioxidants. That's why it's important to continually consume antioxidants in order to counter free radical damage in your body.

When you have too many free radicals running amok, it can cause cell damage particularly in cell membranes, fatty tissue, DNA, and proteins in the form of oxidative stress, which is associated with a number of diseases including:

However, just because antioxidants in the body can stave off oxidative stress doesn't mean that consuming antioxidants specifically can reduce your risk of disease.

There's no definitive answer to whether or not consuming antioxidants, either through food or supplements, reduces cancer risk or improves heart health, says Tim Spector, MD, FRCP, FRSB, a professor of genetic epidemiology at King's College London. And any product marketing that says otherwise is pushing a wellness agenda that's not backed by research.

Ultimately, the health benefits associated with antioxidants likely goes hand-in-hand with the benefits of eating a diet rich in whole foods and leading a healthy lifestyle.

Scientists do know that antioxidants can help reduce inflammation, a process by which white blood cells protect your body from outside invaders like bacteria and viruses. When cells are damaged by an overabundance of free radicals, an inflammatory response can occur.

Your body naturally produces some helpful antioxidants in the form of glutathione and alpha lipoic acid. But you can also get antioxidants from your diet. Fruits, vegetables, and coffee are all rich in antioxidants.

There are thought to be hundreds, if not thousands, of substances that act as antioxidants. Antioxidants include vitamins like vitamin C, vitamin E, and beta-carotene as well as minerals like selenium and manganese. They exist in many foods, from blueberries to dark chocolate.

A 2010 study, published in Nutrition Journal, looked at the antioxidant content of more than 3,100 foods, beverages, spices, herbs, and supplements, and found that a plant-based diet is best for protecting against oxidative stress. That's because plant-based foods have from 5 to 33 times more antioxidant content than meat products. According to the same study, some antioxidant-rich foods are:

Spector says it's important to note that there is no single, antioxidant-rich superfood out there. Therefore, eating the recommended five servings per day of fruits and vegetables is the best way to help ensure you're getting all the antioxidants you need.

You can also take antioxidant supplements, there is limited evidence supporting the benefits of consuming antioxidants in the form of supplements.

For example, a 2010 meta-analysis on antioxidant research, published in Research in Pharmaceutical Sciences, noted that multiple large scale randomized clinical trials found no reduced risk for cardiovascular events in people who took antioxidant supplements.

And for a 2011 review article in Oxidative Medicine and Cellular Longevity, researchers reporter that supplemental antioxidants may not offer the same sufficient protection as an antioxidant-rich diet from whole foods.

In fact, it can be difficult to disentangle the direct health benefits of antioxidants from the other nutrients in foods where they occur. Spector notes that antioxidants work best when consumed as whole foods in the form of vegetables, fruits, and legumes, for example.

Beyond diet, other healthy lifestyle choices like avoiding exposure to cigarette smoke and air pollutants, can reduce your risk of oxidative stress.

New hemp CBD tests show it’s time to downsize and grow up – New Hope Network

A flurry of various testing efforts over the last month has revealed what everybody knows: Its buyer beware when it comes to the wild west of hemp CBD supplements.

In Minnesota, 16 out of 25 brands tested had more than 20% deviation from what the label listed, and eight tested positive for pesticides or heavy metals. In Mississippi, only 3 of 25 products tested were within 20% of label claim, and three others had elevated levels of stoner THC in them.

Related: 17 groups pile on FDA, Congress, White House to regulate hemp CBD

And the U.S. Food and Drug Administration just published test results of 147 products tested for 11 different cannabinoids plus heavy metals and other contaminants. Among the results, of 102 products that declared a specific CBD content, 18 products contained less than 80% of the amount of CBD indicated, 46 products contained CBD within 20% of the amount indicated, and 38 products contained more than 120% of the amount of CBD indicated.

Although the report does highlight issues with meeting CBD label claims and raises some concerns with THC labeling, rationalized Rend Al-Mondhiry, attorney with the Amin Talati Wasserman law firm, its positive to see that most products didnt have unsafe levels of heavy metals.

Related: Can consumer demand for hemp CBD overcome government agencies?

Other industry observers took a similarly sanguine look at the FDAs assessment.

Theres not much news here, yawned the U.S. Hemp Roundtable, a lobbying consortium whose sister organization, the U.S. Hemp Authority, sets quality standards for top-flight brands. The FDA revealed what we already knew: While more work needs to be done to ensure CBD products consistently meet label claims, the majority of products do not contain unsafe contaminant levels, specifically heavy metals.

Really, though. What the commentariat is saying is that hemp CBD products appear to be clean. And thats nothing to sniff at, what with hemp being an excellent bioremediatorthat is, it draws in toxins from the soil. So for finished products to be declared clean does indeed mean that somebody is doing something right.

But six in 10 products did not contain anywhere close to the amount of CBD in the bottle that was claimed on labels.

Is that not a fail?

Its true that such resultsnot to mention the even worse results from Minnesota and Mississippiare a black eye to product makers. Come on, guys, can you really not do the math?

The irresponsible players in the market are distributing false promises and mislabeled products for consumers, said Brandon Beatty, president of Bluebird Botanicals, a top 10 market leader, leading to potentially dangerous outcomes.

Steve Mister, head of the Council for Responsible Nutrition, which represents the largest supplement companies in the business, also expressed fears around the growing subset of CBD-containing products that pose health and safety risks to the 20 million Americans who take CBD dietary supplements.

And the FDA continues to bang the drum about safety concerns around hemp CBD. But remember, the FDAs concerns are around CBD isolate, which is what the agency approved as an official pharmaceutical drug. The agency is never seemingly capable of differentiating between the 99% pure CBD isolate that it approved as a drug and the full spectrum hemp extracts that contain CBD at vastly lower quantities.

So if the FDA is concerned about CBD isolate, what do we make of the majority of the full spectrum hemp CBD oils that dont contain what they say they do? Are they unsafe? The World Health Organization doesnt seem to think so. But then, the WHO does not have to concern itself with pharmaceutical profits.

The problem is, that even if legit hemp CBD may possibly carry a safety risk, what do we make about what can only be described as subpar hemp oil? Is there a true safety issue, or is it just that it all too often does not contain what the label says it should?

And this gets to the crux of the issue. Even in the larger dietary supplements market, the FDA has identified three categories of products in particular that it is concerned about not just not meeting label claim but containing unapproved, contaminated pharmaceutical drugs inside the pills. These categories are weight management, sexual health, sports performanceand diabetes. So its not like the supplements industry in general has its house exactly in order. And as a subset of the larger supplements business, the fledgling upstart hemp CBD business without question needs to get its house in order.

Its time for this industry to downsize and grow up, said Jim Ott, CEO of CFH, Ltd., a vertically integrated hemp genetics, production and extraction company producing CBD ingredients. It is happening as we speak. With this industry consolidation that is happening as we speak, making consumers and brand companies aware that their supply source is in jeopardy and the financial crunch that companies who are not vertically integrated are going to face, will result in more corners be cut and product safety and efficacy will be sacrificed as companies attempt to save their businesses.

As if there isnt enough headwinds with the economic collapse, hemp is facing particular problems, starting with the oversupply of 2019 that led to a price collapsegreat news for consumers, not so much for producers.

Most of what I am hearing suggest a major extinction event is in progresswith bankruptcies, for example, bypassing chapter 11 and going right into liquidation, said John Grubb, managing partner of Summit Venture Management, which consults and partners with entrepreneurs and equity investors of brands. Atalo in Kentucky, and Integrated CBD in Arizona who just auctioned off massive, state-of-art drying and extraction equipment after raising $78 million in 2019.

Already, many top-shelf hemp CBD brands do supplements one better vis a vis transparency by containing QR codes on labels and/or website information that contains Certificates of Analysis vouchsafing product quality and standards. Thats impressive. But the vast number of low-barrier-to-entry hemp CBD brands that have gone into business not knowing they are in the supplements business and not really caring about product quality.

The FDA had been charged by Congress to, among other things, issue a report on the state of the hemp CBD market. One could imagine a report with better utility than the one the agency issued.

For example, imagine the FDA collected samples from various sales channels to get a handle on which was best? First, they couldve started with the top 10 brands. ConsumerLab did such a thing in 2018, and found that the top brands were there for a reason. Brands that passed with flying colors included Ananda Hemp, Bluebird Botanicals, Charlottes Web, Elixinol, Endoca Raw Hemp Oil, Plus CBD Oil, PrimeMyBody Nano-Enhanced Hemp Oiland SOL CBD Pure Hemp Extract.

The FDA could have grabbed products off store shelves at leading health food stores. Then topicals from mass market drug stores. Then CBD-only stores. Then gas stations. Then irregular channels such as boutiques and bookstores. Then the internet. That would have been valuable to consumers, for whom products can be hit or miss.

Instead, savvy consumers need to rely on a sophisticated third party to help them navigate the hemp CBD market. That means natural products retailers, who from all accounts conduct rigorous vetting processes to select only high-quality brands.

This report should serve as further encouragement of compiling of safety data across the industry that might compel FDA to become more comfortable and act more quickly, said Garrett Graff, managing attorney with the Hoban Law Group.

What this report really shows is that the hemp companies the FDA surveyed are clean of heavy metals but fall all too short of providing the much-heralded product promise: Whats on the label is in the bottle. That makes CBD largely safe but of uncertain effectiveness.

The position of the FDAas with the USDA in its draft regulations on the production sidearent doing anyone any favors, and arent working to positively build a legitimate hemp industry. The more they waitthe more uncertainty remains in the market, and hemp CBD will remain a niche market, and more brands and farmers will fail. Maybe thats the way these dinosaur drug warriors want it. You can add consumers to the list of stakeholders that arent being served by the federal apparatus.

Best weight loss supplements: The extract proven to burn body weight and belly fat – Express

Numerous studies in rodents have found that it has anti-obesity effects.

Studies in Japanese adults have demonstrated its flair for attacking belly fat.

One notable study followed 210 people with a lot of belly fat.

It found that taking Lactobacillus gasseri for 12 weeks reduced body weight, fat around organs, BMI, waist size and hip circumference.

What's more, belly fat was reduced by 8.5 percent.

However, when participants stopped taking the probiotic, they gained back all of the belly fat within a month

It is thought that certain probiotics may inhibit the absorption of dietary fat, increasing the amount of fat excreted with feces.

Put simply, they make you "harvest" fewer calories from the foods in your diet.

Certain bacteria, such as those from the Lactobacillus family, have been found to function in this way.

Probiotics alone won't yield results as gains in one area can be offset by bad decisions in another.

It is important to incorporate probiotics into a diet that cuts back on calories while topping up the essentials.

"The best way to achieve this is to swap unhealthy and high-energy food choices such as fast food, processed food and sugary drinks (including alcohol) for healthier choices," advises the NHS.

MarkIt to Market – June 2020: CBD Ingredient Brands – Trademark Registration Is Possible, but May Be a Tough Pill to Swallow – JD Supra

A June 16, 2020 precedential decision by the Trademark Trial and Appeal Board held that Federal trademark registration is not available for food, beverages, or nutritional/dietary supplements to which hemp-derived cannibidiol (CBD) has been added. Here is what you need to know aboutIn re Stanley Brothers Social Enterprises, LLC.

In this case, the applicant sought federal trademark registration of the mark CW, for hemp oil extracts sold as an integral component of dietary and nutritional supplements in Class 5. On appeal, the Board took the position that dietary supplements are a food and that hemp-derived CBD is an extract of the cannabis plant that is regulated as a drug under the Food, Drug, and Cosmetics Act (FDCA). The sale of CBD-infused food or dietary supplements is a per se violation of the FDCA, and a mark for such products is not federally registrable. Additionally, as the record was absent any evidence that CBD-infused food had been marketed prior to institution of the clinical investigations, CBD does not fall within any exception to the FDCA that might be available to other foods or dietary supplements on the market to which drugs or biological products have been added. In light of this decision, how can brand owners protect their CBD ingredient brands?

Cholesterol can build up in a persons artery wall, restricting the flow of blood to the heart, brain and the rest of the body.

Having high cholesterol puts a person at risk of having a blood clot develop somewhere in the body.

Another risk of high cholesterol is the link to coronary heart disease due to the rise of the bloods cholesterol levels increasing.

Finding natural ways to reduce your cholesterol and significantly reduce the risk of something more serious happening, taking either of two supplements could help.

Niacin is a B vitamin which is used by the body to turn food into energy.

Niacin also helps keep the nervous system, digestive system and skin healthy.

Used as a treatment, niacin increases a persons HDL cholesterol or helps correct a vitamin deficiency.

Niacin can help raise HDL cholesterol by more than 30 percent.

DON'T MISS

Niacin canalso be used to boost your HDLcholesterollevels anddecreaseyour levels of triglycerides, a type of fat that increases your risk of heart disease.

The Mayo Clinic estimates that takingniacinsupplements may increase HDL levels by 30 percent or more.

Niacin as a cholesterol treatment, shows strong evidence from studies that it can also help boost levels of good HDL cholesterol.

Niacin also modestly lowers bad LDL cholesterol and lower triglycerides.

Niacin is sometimes prescribed in combination with statins for cholesterol control, such as rosuvastatin or simvastatin.

One of the best strategies to help reduce LDL bad cholesterol is by taking a magnesium supplement daily.

Magnesium acts like a natural statin drug and lowers bad cholesterol, reduces triglycerides and increases good cholesterol.

In order for the body to make cholesterol, it requires a specific enzyme known as HMG-CoA reductase.

Magnesium regulates this enzyme and helps to maintain a proper amount of cholesterol in the body.

When the body is magnesium deficient, cholesterol continues to be produced in excess and this causes a build-up of cholesterol which may lead to coronary heart disease.

Is takeaway food messing with your immunity? – The New Indian Express

Express News Service

HYDERABAD: If we do catch Covid-19, our immune system is responsible for fighting it. Research shows improving nutrition helpssupport optimal immune function, says Soumya Kuthadi, a Hyderabadi who is an Australia-certified accredited practicing dietitian working in private practice and research in Melbourne, Australia.

Soumya (Insta: @NutritiousNudge) says, To put it simply, you cannot boost your immune system through diet, and no specific food or herbal supplement can prevent one from catching Coronavirus or cure one of it. However, she adds, Nutritionally, we can help support optimal immune function by choosing a healthy lifestyle.

Dr Janaki Badugu, consulting nutritionist, explains, Our body is divided into two immune systems- innate and acquired. Acquired is when we develop antibodies after an infection. In Covid-19, this is not possible since it is a novel virus and is not leaving any traces of it after leaving the body (this is the current knowledge).

On innate immunity, she says, This is naturally present. All the immune cells which form innate immunity come from body systems such as lymphatic system, mucosal cells, bone marrow, intestines, stomach acids etc. Therefore, it is important that all our organs are functioning well. Since these systems are built over a period of time and may undergo abuse, re-strengthening them with balanced nutrition, optimal exercise and timely sleep are of pivotal importance.

Using supplements to prevent contracting the virusAccording to Soumya, vitamin and mineral supplements are not recommended for the healthy general population, however, there are some exceptions. She says, Pregnant women, those deficient in certain nutrients (Vitamin D), people with chronic diseases and conditions and those who are on restrictive diets may need specific supplements.

To takeaway or not?Usually, takeaway foods are high in saturated fats, sugar, salt and calories and consuming these foods regularly would mean that youre preventing your immune system from functioning optimally, share Soumya. She adds, That being said, moderation is key. Therefore, limit it to one to two meals per week. Coming to safety, it is essential to ensure that the takeout place is following proper food safety and hygiene protocols.

Right way to wash fruits and vegetablesAs suggested by the WHO, before, handling them, wash your hands with soap and water. Then wash the fruits and vegetables thoroughly with clean water, especially If you eat them raw.

Shop for groceries safelyWhen grocery shopping, keep at least one-meter distance from others and avoid touching your face. If possible sanitise the handles of the shopping trolleys or baskets before shopping. Once youre home, wash your hands thoroughly and also after handling it.

Homemade kadha, immunity boosterThe Kadha is ideal for everybody. There are no age restrictions. However, one must remember that the spices might cause heat in some people. So children or persons with heat bodies (vata) can reduce the spices quantity and then have it. Its advisable to have during monsoon and winters, again for the same reason of heat. A healthy adult can consume two cups a day. If the days are warm, one can change ingredients to fennel seeds and rose petals, fresh turmeric instead of cinnamon and cloves. We Gujaratis love this drink.
