DUBLIN, Aug. 4, 2020 /PRNewswire/ -- The "North America Vegetable Oil Market - Growth, Trends and Forecast (2020-2025)" report has been added to ResearchAndMarkets.com's offering.

The North American Vegetable Oil Market is projected to grow at a CAGR of 4.01% during the forecast period 2020-2025.

In North America, the market is driven by robust demand for organic health-based products, with increased consumption among health-conscious consumers of high-quality edible oils/cooking oils and the growing demand from various application areas.

The food industry held a major market share with the growing popularity of vegan diets. In addition, a number of oils are used as food supplements (or "nutraceuticals"), for their nutrient content or purported medicinal effect.Key Market Trends

Growing Consumption of Olive Oil

In North America, the consumption of olive oil has almost doubled over the last 25 years. The growing demand for oil has been driven mainly due to its associated health benefits. Furthermore, Italy, United States and Spain are the leading olive oil-importing countries, comprising 45.8% share of the global import. Whereas, Spain, Italy, and Tunisia are the prominent olive oil exporting companies accounting for 62.9% share in the global export.

United States Holds the Largest Market Share

According to the USDA report, the United States is the leading producer of soybean oil after China. During 2018-2019, the country produced 10,975 thousand metric ton of soybean oil, from which 881 thousand metric ton was exported to other regions. Moreover, domestic consumption was led by the strong demand for soybean oil for fuel applications, thereby, accounting 10,659 thousand metric ton, in terms of consumption value. Thus, this restricted the export value of the product. Furthermore, in United States, the consumption of palm oil is low. However, manufacturers are investing in increasing the application in the country, owing to its lower price and wide application in the food and personal care segments.

When selecting a chromium supplement, you should consider several factors.

First, be sure to check the ingredient list. Look for products without artificial ingredients, additives, and fillers.

Youll also want to pay attention to the form. Chromium supplements are available in several forms, including:

Although some studies indicate that your body absorbs chromium picolinate best, theres concern that this form may cause oxidative damage to your cells (15, 16, 17).

Certain supplements may also contain additional ingredients to enhance their potential health benefits, such as cinnamon or other medicinal herbs.

Furthermore, you should look for products that have undergone third-party testing, are certified by organizations like USP or NSF International, and are manufactured in GMP-certified facilities.

Finally, its important to check the product dosage carefully.

Although daily needs vary based on age and sex, the recommended Daily Value (DV) for chromium is 35 mcg. Yet, many supplements pack significantly higher amounts and are available in doses ranging from 2001,000 mcg (2).

Currently, chromium has no established tolerable upper intake (UL), which is the highest amount of a nutrient you can take without risk of adverse health effects (2).

Nonetheless, chromium may interact with certain medications, including antacids, beta-blockers, proton pump inhibitors, insulin, and corticosteroids (2).

If youre on these medications or have any underlying health conditions, consult a healthcare professional before taking chromium.

Check out these two articles to help make supplement shopping a breeze:

The numerous chromium supplements on the market vary in dosage and form.

Some contain added ingredients, such as cinnamon or other herbs and spices, some of which may amplify their potential benefits.

Keep in mind that all of the supplements listed above contain far more than the recommended DV of 35 mcg. If youre concerned about proper dosage or if youre taking any other medications be sure to consult your healthcare provider before taking chromium.

Its also important to pair these supplements with a nutritious and balanced diet.

Green leafy vegetables, nuts, seeds, and vegetable oils are excellent sources of vitamin E. Humans or animals would have to ingest twice the amount of synthetic chemical to match the bioavailability of the natural form. Thus, it is highly preferred fortifying micronutrients in animal and human nutrition applications. Tocotrienols are anticipated to attain high CAGR, owing to its powerful neuroprotective, cholesterol-lowering, and anti-cancer properties, that are often not exhibited by tocopherols. Increased Interest Prompts Healthy Tails to Expand Raw Options – PetProductNews.com

By Pet Product News Staff

Published: 2020.08.04 10:20 AM

Lori Johnson, owner of Healthy Tails, which has two stores in Reno, Nev., discusses the top-selling frozen raw products at her stores as well as how the COVID-19 pandemic has presented challenges for her business.

Lori Johnson: Customers can go on our website and order from our own store onlineto either be picked up in-store or curbside, or we deliver free of charge within 10 miles of either store, but we do no shipping.

Our employees are all pet nutrition specialists and help pet parents find the right foods for their dog or cat that agree with their digestion issues and skin/coat. The object is not to sell one food over another, but to help pet parents choose the right food/treat/supplement for their pet based on their pets allergies, digestion issues, etc. We also carry many supplements for good health and pain management with many choices and strengths of cannabidiol (CBD).

Johnson: Top sellers in frozen raw food are Smallbatch, Stella & Chewys, Northwest Naturals and Primal Pet Foods. Top sellers in dry food are Acana, The Honest Kitchen, Taste of the Wild, Zignature, FirstMate, Pulsar, Solid Gold and Victor. Top sellers in chews are Best Bully Sticks, Krijon beef cheeks and Vital Essentials. For teeth, Indigenous dog chews. Top sellers in treats are Stella & Chewys and Wild Meadow Farms. Top sellers in toys are Petlou, Hyper Pet and VIP Products. Top sellers in supplements are Pet Releaf, Green Gorilla, Austin and Kat, and Iceland Pure CBD. Top sellers in leashes, harnesses and collars are Lupine[which offers a] lifetime guaranteeand EzyDog, as the harnesses are so easy to put on.

Johnson: Stella & Chewys and Smallbatch raw food, Zignature dry food (it has so many varieties of proteins), Vital Essential chews, Pet Releaf CBD oil, and VIP and Hyper Pet toys.

Johnson: Raw frozen food. I have added five freezers to the stores in the last two years, and more and more pet parents want to feed their dogs and cats better-quality food and are moving to raw foods. When you solve a pets digestive issues, they are healthier and happier, and you have less vet bills.

Also, CBD products. They work wonders for aging pets to remain as agile as possible for as long as possible.

Johnson: The stay-at-home and social distancing mandates by the state [in response to COVID-19] have changed our business drastically. Keeping my employees happy and healthy is my first priority. I need them. No longer do we have customers walking around the store, reading ingredients and choosing different products for their dog or cat to try. The employees used to spend 15 to 30 minutes with a customer discussing their dog or cats needs. Now, they spend less than five minutes as we cannot have more than one to two customers in the stores at the same time. We still want to take the 15 to 30 minutes, but customers are apprehensive to stay longer.

Some customers are following the states rules, and some arent. I want the stores to stay open as long as possible, and I need to follow these rules to keep my employees at ease with their connections with our shoppers. Employees take temperatures twice a day, wear masks and gloveschanging them oftenand we clean on an hourly basis: keypads, credit card readers, counter tops, etc.

Johnson: If you had asked me this question in January, I would say I want Healthy Tails to grow and maybe open a third location. We added a kiosk at the mall at the end of January; now we have closed it permanently. Healthy Tails is my happy place. I love talking to customers about their dogs and catssharing stories and giving their dogs a treat.

As it is now May 2020, I just want to stay in business and keep the employees I have so that I can continue to help pet parents find the right foods for their dogs and cats. I havent felt that Healthy Tails is just a store that sells dog and cat foods and accessories. It has always been a destination for pet parents to share their pets and/or their pet stories with us.

I feel social distancing is here to stay for a long timeuntil a vaccine [for COVID-19 is created]so the changes for dog and cat parents mean taking walks with their dogs and stopping in the shop are more limited. Everyone is scared, mad or apprehensive about going out and accidentally being close to someone. Im hoping our stores can still be a place for customers to stop by with their petsto get a treat for them and tell me a happy story about them, even if we are all wearing masks and gloves. I want every dog and cat to be a Healthy Tails dog and cat, and I yearn to give them all a hug again.

Johnson: Just talking to customers about their dog or cat. There are many dog and cat food stores out there and so many online shopping choices. Connecting with a pet parent about their dog and cat is personal, and I want to have that conversation. If we do not carry the food they are looking for, Ill help them find it somewhere else. Our dogs and cats lives are much shorter than ours, and they bring us so much love.

I want customers to share the connection they have with their dog or cat with me. I guess I need that connection. I want all pet parents to enjoy their pet to the fullest, with the longest, most active life, and whatever I can do to help with that makes me happy. It is not a sales tool. It is how I feel about all dogs and cats. They are pure love.

Nowadays, consumers are more aware of functional food and dietary supplements and the potential role of these products in ensuring good health. With this, probiotics are becoming an increasingly popular as a functional food because of their health benefits such as improvement of intestinal health, amelioration of symptoms of lactose intolerance, enhancement of the immune response, reduction of serum cholesterol, cancer prevention, and reduction of the risk of various other diseases. Moreover, the rising awareness activities by companies, such as Yakult, continue to drive the consumer awareness about probiotic products that will in turn fuel the growth of the probiotics market. Also, many countries are taking initiatives to promote the health benefits of probiotics. For instance, to provide the consumers with a better understanding of the health benefits of probiotics, the Nutrition Society of Malaysia (NSM) has Initiated the Probiotics Education Programme (PEP). Hence, the growing awareness about health benefits of probiotics among consumers and various initiatives taken by developing countries helps to spur the demand for probiotics.

Impact of COVID-19 on the Probiotics Market

The COVID-19 crisis has impacted the entire value chain of the probiotics industry mainly due to strict lockdown in some regions and several concerns such as truck shortages, reduced deliveries, and employees contracting COVID-19. In addition, truncated air freight capacity, port congestion, roadblocks, and logistic disruptions in Southeast Asia are expected to escalate as stricter measures are implemented by the governments. All these factors somehow restricted the demand for probiotics. For instance, Yakult company has reported that the COVID-19 pandemic has impacted its business in China as they had experienced a drop in sales in the first two months of the year 2020. However, the use of probiotics is increasing gradually in the recent months due to the fact that corona virus directly affects the human's immune system and use of probiotics have positive effects on the immune responses. For example, Dupont reported the growth in its Nutrition & Biosciences segment in its 2020 first quarter result, with probiotics section seeing the strongest growth period to date. Also, in April 2020, Probi reported that its probiotic sales had been bolstered, noting a clear increase in interest in its immunity products.

The global probiotics market study presents historical market data in terms of value (2018 and 2019), estimated current data (2020), and forecasts for 2027. The market is segmented on the basis of strain, product type, form, sales channel, end-user, and geography. The study also evaluates industry competitors and analyses the market at a country level.

Based on strain, the bacteria strain segment is estimated to command the largest share of the overall probiotics market in 2020. The large share of this segment is mainly attributed to the factors such as growing use of bacteria strain in a wide variety of commercial dairy products including sour and fresh milk, yogurt, and cheese, among others. In addition, the growing gastrointestinal and extraintestinal disorders (including prevention and alleviation symptoms of traveler's diarrhea and antibiotic-associated diarrhea, inflammatory bowel disease, lactose intolerance, and irritable bowel syndrome); increasing popularity among health-conscious consumers around the world; and rising preference for nutrient-rich food products is expected to boost the demand for bacterial strain probiotics. However, the yeast strain product segment is expected to grow with the fastest CAGR during the forecast period. The fast growth of this segment is mainly attributed to the increasing demand for yeast strain-based medicines due to proven positive results for reducing the risk of chronic diseases such as diarrhea & bowel diseases related to antibiotic use.

Based on product type, the probiotic functional food & beverages segment is estimated to command the largest share of the overall probiotics market in 2020. The large share of this market is mainly attributed to the factors such as growing consumer interest for functional food, particularly probiotics that can support digestive health; rising health and wellness trends; and growing application of probiotics in yogurt, which is the most popular source of probiotics. However, the probiotic medical & dietary supplements segmentis expected to grow with the fastest CAGR during the forecast period. The fast growth of this segment is primarily attributed to the rapid urbanization, increasing disease conditions, and growing awareness regarding the health benefits of good nutrients among consumers. Further, energy, weight management, immunity, diabetes control, cardiovascular diseases, gastrointestinal health, and general health are some of the major applications of probiotic dietary supplements which are driving the market growth.

Based on form, the liquid form segment is estimated to command the largest share of the overall probiotics market in 2020. The large share of this segment is mainly attributed to the growing use of liquid probiotics due to variations in the form of liquid supplements and probiotic-enriched drinks. Also, liquid probiotics are convenient and easy to consume for children and elderly who dislike swallowing pills and thus drives the growth of this segment. However, most probiotics need to be refrigerated, especially the juices and probiotics drinks, which somehow restricts the demand for liquid form probiotics. However, the dry form segment is expected to grow at the fastest rate, owing to the benefits such as better handling & transport, ease of use, lower expenses, ability to avoid costly formulation mistakes, and enhancement in shelf life of ingredients.

Based on sales channel, the offline sales segment is estimated to command the largest share of the overall probiotics market in 2020. The large share of this segment is mainly attributed to the increasing per capita disposable income, rising healthy eating habits, and growing urban population. In addition, the rise in the number of pharmacies and supermarkets and growing probiotics supplement industry in the U.S. and across the world further supports the growth of this segment. However, the online sales segment is expected to grow with the fastest CAGR during the forecast period. The fast growth of this segment is primarily attributed to the growing consumer spending on probiotic products through online distribution channels, growing smartphone and internet penetration, and e-commerce expansion by major players in the developing countries. For instance, South Korean probiotic brand, Youguth, is expanding its e-commerce reach in Singapore. Further, Amazon, online pharmacies, and local online stores are mainly expected to drive the growth of this segment.

Based on end-user, the human segment is estimated to command the largest share of the overall probiotics market in 2020. The large share of this market is mainly attributed to the major factors such as the growing use of probiotics to treat digestive tract issues in humans, growing proportion of elderly people, and high demand for nutritional products among consumers. However, the animal segment is expected to grow with the fastest CAGR during the forecast period.

Geographically, Asia-Pacific region is estimated to command the largest share of the global probiotics market in 2020. The large share and the fast growth of this market is mainly attributed to the factors such as increased consumer awareness regarding the relationship between their digestive health & immunity and overall wellness; growing diabetic and overweight people in Asia-Pacific; and rising innovations in probiotic formulations. In addition, the increasing trend across the Asia-Pacific region for non-dairy probiotic food (e.g. cereal based, fruit and vegetable juices) and presence of number of companies in the digestive health products category offers lucrative growth opportunities for the key players operating in this market.

Some of the key players operating in the global probiotics market are Probi AB (Sweden), BioGaia AB (Sweden), Nestle S.A. (Switzerland), Chr. Hasen Holding A/S (Denmark), Danone S.A. (France), Yakult Honsha Co., Ltd. (Japan), Lallemand Inc. (Canada), Lifeway Foods Inc. (U.S.), Dupont de Nemours, Inc. (U.S.), Kerry Group plc (Ireland), Archer Daniels Midland Co. (U.S.), Deerland Probiotics & Enzymes Inc. (U.S.), PepsiCo Inc. (U.S.), Evolve Biosystems (U.S.), Cell Biotech Co., Ltd. (Korea), and Probiotical S.p.A. (Italy) among others.

Magnesium: Why you need this mineral for better sleep, mood and more – CNET

Getty Images

Most of us have a cabinet full of supplements that at some point, get neglected. Whether it's because you fell out of your routine or you forgot why you even started it in the first place, there's one that most Americans could benefit from adding back into their regimen: magnesium.

Studies show that the majority of the population is at risk for magnesium deficiency due to a variety of lifestyle factors, including a diet high in processed food. Certain illnesses or health conditions, including Type 2 diabetes or alcohol dependency, can make you susceptible to low magnesium levels, too. A 2013-2016 analysis from the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey found that 48% of Americans don't get adequate magnesium in their diets.

Our Health & Wellness newsletter puts the best products, updates and advice in your inbox.

Magnesium supplements have become popular in the wellness space recently, and many experts are recommending them for helping with sleep, stress, anxiety and more. But do these claims hold up? Below, I give an overview of the science on magnesium, and I also talked to registered dietitian Amy Gorin to find out more on why magnesium is important and how to know if a supplement may be right for you.

Magnesium requirements vary based on a person's age, gender and other health factors (like pregnancy), but the average recommendation is around 300mg per day.

"Magnesium is important for so many aspects of health. The mineral is involved in more than 300 enzymatic reactions in the body. It's important for bone health, helping to keep your blood sugar levels stable, helping your muscles and nerves to properly function, and keeping your blood pressure at healthy levels," Gorin says.

Magnesium levels also affect your brain and your mood, which is why low levels of magnesium are associated with mood disorders, although more research needs to be done to determine just how important it is for your emotional or mental health.

If you've ever asked a health expert about the best supplements for stress, chances are magnesium is on the list. Why? First of all, according to Gorin, magnesium helps the brain cope with stressors. "Research has shown that magnesium supplementation may affect the brain functions that help lower stress and anxiety," Gorin says.

It works by helping your body kick into the "rest and digest" state, or by activating your parasympathetic nervous system. When you are stressed, your body is likely in the sympathetic nervous system for prolonged periods, which over time can make you feel run down and tired. Studies also showed that magnesium intake helped improve heart-rate variability (HRV) scores, which are representative of how well your body can adapt to stress.

Likewise, magnesium can help you sleep better, since the mineral can have a calming effect on your body. Magnesium helps regulatethe hormone melatonin, which is involved with controlling your circadian rhythm. Your circadian rhythm regulates many things in your body, including when you feel tired and how well you sleep.

Many activities and habits can throw off your circadian rhythm, including exposing your eyes to blue light at night. If you are trying to optimize your circadian rhythm, or are trying to get better sleep with melatonin supplements, you should check that your magnesium levels are optimal since they work together to help you get better rest.

A 2017 study reviewed the connection between magnesium and exercise performance, and found that the more active you are, the more your body needs magnesium. Some claim that it can help you recover faster from workouts, but the evidence on magnesium specifically for workout recovery is limited.

We do know that your muscles need adequate magnesium to function well and avoid cramping, so it makes sense that optimal magnesium levels can facilitate better recovery from workouts.

Grains and seeds contain naturally occurring magnesium.

Vitamin D is crucial for your overall well-being and especially for your immune system health. But even if you think you're getting enough vitamin D through supplementation or sun exposure, you could still be low if your magnesium levels are not optimal.

According to the American Osteopathic Association, low magnesium levels can make vitamin D ineffective. That means that even though you are taking in vitamin D from food, supplements or sunlight exposure, your body can't use it or benefit from it unless you have sufficient magnesium levels.

Magnesium is found naturally in food, like leafy vegetables, whole grains, nuts, seeds and milk, but it's usually in smaller amounts and it can be difficult to get the full 300 mg or more that is needed per day. Plus, scientistspredict that only about 30% to 50% of the magnesium that you take in is actually absorbed in the body. For these reasons, many people turn to a supplement to ensure they are meeting their daily needs.

There are several different types of magnesium supplements that can help specific issues.

If you walk into a vitamin or health food store and look for magnesium supplements, you will likely find several different types. You can get magnesium supplements in powder form (like the popular Natural Vitality Calm supplement) that can be dissolved in water or you can take the mineral in a capsule or tablet.

But not all magnesium supplements are the same, which is why it's important to not only seek a health professional's guidance on which supplement may be best for you, but also understand that different forms of magnesium can have different side effects. For example, magnesium carbonate is one form of magnesium that, if you overdo it, you can end up with stomach upset and diarrhea.

Popular forms of magnesium that are available in supplements:

Magnesium glycinate:"This is a common form of magnesium in supplement form. You might also see it used in heartburn treatments," Gorin says. Magnesium glycinate is often recommended by experts since it's absorbed well in the body and tends to cause less stomach discomfort or upset.

Magnesium oxide: "This form of magnesium can be used as an antacid for heartburn relief, as a short-term laxative, or as a dietary supplement when you're not taking in enough magnesium from food," Gorin says.

Magnesium citrate: "This form of magnesium is sometimes used as a stool softener or laxative," Gorin says.

Magnesium L-threonate:"This is a specific type of magnesium that's been proven to have cognitive benefits. It was discovered by MIT researchers, and you can get it in supplement form. Research suggests that it may help improve brain plasticity, which may have positive effects on memory, learning and cognition," Gorin says.

Additionally, be sure to split your total daily dosage and take several smaller doses throughout the day. This is because calcium absorption is highest in doses of 500 mg or less and decreases with larger amounts (10).

With so many different supplements on the market, picking the right product can be challenging.

Be sure to buy from a reputable manufacturer and look for supplements that have undergone third-party testing and are certified by organizations like USP or NSF International.

Its also important to consider the type of calcium in your supplement and whether it contains calcium carbonate or calcium citrate, which are the two most common forms.

Calcium carbonate is more widely available, cheaper, and contains a higher amount of calcium than other compounds. However, it has been associated with symptoms like gas and bloating (3, 15).

Calcium citrate, on the other hand, is slightly more expensive but also more easily absorbed in the body (5, 15).

People who have low stomach acid or are taking proton pump inhibitors should choose calcium citrate, as it can be absorbed without the help of stomach acid (16).

Be sure to check the ingredient label carefully, as many products contain high amounts of fillers, additives, artificial sweeteners, and preservatives.

Many products also contain added ingredients like vitamin D, which can help optimize the absorption of calcium (4).

Calcium requirements range from 1,000-1,200 mg daily for most adults depending on age and sex, and it can come from a combination of food sources and supplements (17).

For most people, supplements providing 200500 mg of calcium are often enough to help fill any gaps in their diet (18).

However, those who are at risk of osteoporosis or unable to meet their calcium needs due to food allergies or dietary restrictions may require a higher dose (9).

Furthermore, those with certain medical conditions, such as hypoparathyroidism a condition characterized by low production of parathyroid hormone, may also need a higher dose supplement (19).

Be sure to talk to your doctor before using a high dose calcium supplement, and remember to always split supplementation into several smaller doses of less than 500 mg to maximize absorption (17).

Finally, its important to only use a supplement as directed and talk to a healthcare professional before starting to supplement, especially if you have any underlying conditions or are taking medications.

The good vitamin guide: What should you take and when for a well-balanced diet? – Mirror Online

Many medical experts believe we are simply wasting money on health supplements.

The general consensus is we can get all the vitamins and minerals we need from a well-balanced diet.

And theres no discernible evidence taking those pills and potions will reduce your risk of conditions like heart disease or help you live longer.

The evidence for the actual health benefits is rather limited, says Leeds GP Dr Gary Bartlett, echoing the thoughts of so many of his colleagues.

Eating fruit, vegetables, carbohydrates and whole grains with the correct amount of protein will be way more beneficial in maintaining good health over taking a supplement.

But statistics show that, in the real world, for many reasons, this is not always the case.

Diet should always come first, says Dr Sarah Brewer, GP, nutritionist and medical director of Healthspan.

But the National Diet and Nutrition Surveys (NDNS) consistently show significant numbers of the population do not get all the vitamins and minerals they need from their food.

This could be because of poor diet choices, such as relying on processed foods, or other factors like avoiding certain food groups because you simply dont like them or for ethical reasons.

Then there are those on a restrictive weight loss plan; older people whose nutrient absorption is less efficient and menstruating girls at risk of low iron levels.

Sometimes, despite our best efforts, our diet fails to give us all we need, suggests Rob Hobson, nutritionist and author.

Vegans, for instance, are likely to benefit from taking a vitamin B12 supplement as this nutrient isnt found in many plant foods, he says.

And, if youre not getting your five- a-day or eating oily fish, then a daily multivitamin and mineral should be considered.

Quality is key, explains Dr Brewer. Look for products made to a pharmaceutical standard known as Good Manufacturing Practice (GMP).

This tests products for purity and consistency of dose at every stage of manufacture and is usually mentioned as a quality point on manufacturers About Us web page.

You can also try searching on the internet for the name of your chosen brand plus the term GMP.

And be choosy where you buy them. Vitamin and mineral supplements sold in high street pharmacies or from trusted online retailers offer quality and value for money, says Dr Brewer.

You get what you pay for. Check labels to compare levels of ingredients between brands and that you are buying a quality product.

Whether you take a tablet, capsule, a liquid, gummies or spray is really down to personal choice, says Dr Brewer. Although, in general, a tablet will provide a wider range of vitamins and minerals than a gummy or spray.

Dr Brewer says: It is important to check with a pharmacist or doctor if you have a medical condition or if you are taking any prescribed or over-the-counter drugs.

Also check before taking any supplements if you are pregnant, or planning to be, or if breast-feeding.

"The risk of side-effects is very low as long as you do not exceed the manufacturer's recommended daily intake of any supplement.

"There is a wide safety margin between what most supplements deliver and what would be required to cause side-effects or toxic reactions," Dr Brewer explains.

"If taking a multivitamin, be careful about taking additional supplements that include fat soluble vitamins A, D, E and K as these can be stored in the body and accumulate to toxic levels when intakes are too high."

And because all minerals can be toxic in excess, dont exceed manufacturers recommended doses or mix and match supplements that contain minerals. Those most likely to cause problems in excess are iron, selenium, magnesium and zinc.

Most vitamin and mineral supplements are best taken immedi- ately after food and with water to avoid nausea or indigestion (even a few bites of food or a glass of orange juice will do).

Dont wash them down with coffee or tea, which can interfere with absorption of minerals such as iron and zinc.

Fat soluble substances (e.g. co-enzyme Q10, evening primrose oil, fish oils, vitamin E) are best taken with food containing some fat, such as milk. If taking a fish oil that produces fishy burps, try emulsifying the oil by shaking your dose with a little milk to increase absorption and reduce after-taste.

One-a-day supplements are best taken after your evening meal because repair processes and mineral movements in your body are greatest at night when growth hormone is secreted.

When taking two or more tablets/capsules of the same prepa- ration daily, spreading them over the day maximises absorption and evens out blood levels.

Herbal products can vary in quality, warns Dr Chris Etheridge, chair of the British Herbal Medicine Association.

Recent research revealed 30-40% of milk thistle and echinacea herbal and food supplements were sub- standard. Some appeared not to contain the listed herb.

However, Traditional Herbal Registration (THR) medicines were 100% accurate in containing the right herb in the correct amount. Always look for herbal medicines that display THR on their pack.

Give yourself a boost: 3 ways to keep the immune system in top shape – Las Vegas Sun

Boosting our immune system to help us fight disease and illness more effectively is crucial, pandemic or no. Eating healthy, along with exercising regularly and engaging in stress-relieving activities, are critical.

Through a balanced, varied diet, you can improve your immune system by consuming antioxidant-rich foods and phytochemicals, or chemical compounds of plant origin, explains Samantha M. Coogan, director of the Didactic Program in Nutrition and Dietetics at UNLV.

Coogan says that antioxidants fight off free radicals, which, according to MedicalNewsToday.com, are unstable atoms that can damage cells, which can lead to potential infection. When these cellular linings are broken or disrupted, foreign matter or waste products can potentially enter the cell and attack the organelles and cell as a whole, Coogan says, adding that such antioxidants as vitamins A, C and E, along with copper, selenium and zinc, are beneficial in helping to prevent these kinds of attacks on cells.

While people often turn to supplements to get antioxidants and vitamins, Coogan doesnt recommend them. Food first, she says, followed by supplements only if necessary.

Move for Health

Exercise is another important factor in maintaining a healthy lifestyle. Working out directly affects your immune system because of the purposeful stress response you put onto the body, Coogan says, adding that when we work out, free radicals are produced.

But isnt that counterproductive?

So you want to boost your immune system, but youre not sure what to eat. Samantha M. Coogan, director of the Didactic Program in Nutrition and Dietetics at UNLV, has some recommendations. Next time youre at the grocery store, load up on the following:

red, orange and yellow produce

citrus fruits

berries

green, leafy vegetables

squashes

gourds

eggplant

garlic

onion

leeks

seafood

meat

eggs

milk

nuts

green tea

Coogan says the production of free radicals is a normal occurrence, and explains why nutrition before and after a workout is critical to help fight off those free radicals after your exercise session, and to help recover and repair the stressed and damaged muscle tissue.

Again, Coogan assures this is all completely normal, and even beneficial. The more we expose our bodies to that type of external stimulus, it requires the body to react every time, she says. Each time, it will adapt more quickly and readily.

Finding a safe way to exercise during the pandemic can present its difficulties, especially in the summer when living in the desert. Lifting weights at home, following a yoga instruction video on YouTube and hiking are just a few ways to incorporate activity into your daily routine.

Another advantage of exercise: its role in alleviating stress, which can wreak havoc on the immune system.

Neurotransmitters and stress hormones are released in direct response to external stimuli, whether it be physical stresslike exercise or physical traumaor mental and emotional stress, Coogan says. Cortisol tends to be one of the biggest culprits when it comes to stress, which also hinders weight management or loss, because cortisol increases fat around the organs, known as visceral fat. While other stress hormones like epinephrine and norepinephrine are responsible for the fight or flight response, cortisol is the main obstacle when it comes to weight maintenance and our stress response, Coogan says.

Exercise for the mind

People are more stressed now than ever before, but even during a pandemic, we can incorporate stress-relieving activities into our daily lives.

One way to reduce stressful responses: Give yourself something on which to focus. Stimulating your brain can help stave off stress, especially if you try something new, Coogan says, although she clarifies that doing something familiar can be just as effective.

Find something unrelated to work, school, the pandemic or whats going on around the world right now, and find something that brings you happiness and puts a smile on your face, Coogan says. The health expert recommends video games, a comforting TV show or movie, reading, meditation, puzzles, yoga, brain teasers, painting, adult coloring books, an instrument, knitting or learning a new skill.

Coogan says that during the pandemic, she picked up embroidery as a new hobby. Im so in love with it, she says. I am a very detail-oriented person, and getting lost in the intricacies of the patterns and the way the threads come together to form this beautiful work of art produces very happy hormones and brings me a lot of joy and satisfaction in the work Ive done. I can get lost in it for hours as I give all my attention to the detail of the pattern, with my favorite music playing or a comedy special on in the background.

Coogan says the activity doesnt have to be intricate or complicatedor produce anything. If it has a positive benefit to you, keep doing it, she says. If youve mastered that boss level 100 times, but each time you do it, it makes you feel good, then keep doing it. If sitting on the couch for nine hours straight binge-watching See with Jason Momoa brings you joy and fulfillment for that day, despite no productivity in the traditional sense, thats also OK, Coogan says, adding that she may or may not have done that herself.

Vegging out, she says, is still a way of taking control of stress. Just dont let yourself get lost in your own silence or your own head, Coogan says, warning that can trigger even more stress. Its all about moderation and finding healthy habits.

Make sure to switch up what youre doing, she saysand maybe dont binge-watch Netflix every single day.

For more information on micronutrients, Coogan suggests visiting the National Institutes of Healths nutrient recommendation page.

FDA Announces New Protocol for the Development and Registration of Treatments for Preharvest Agricultural Water – Produce Blue Book

For Immediate Release: July 30, 2020

Today, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration announced a new protocol for the development and registration of antimicrobial treatments for preharvest agricultural water, such as the water used in farm irrigation systems. The protocol was developed through a collaboration with the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency.

Companies can now use data developed under this protocol to support the EPA registration of products that can treat agricultural water against foodborne bacteria, which could provide farmers with a useful tool to help protect the safety of produce intended for consumers, like romaine lettuce and other leafy greens.

The announcement was made during a webinar on the FDAs 2020 Leafy Green STEC Action Plan.

This new protocol is a huge milestone for produce safety and for the Leafy Green Action Plan released by the FDA earlier this year. Working together, the FDA and EPA have supported the development of this protocol that may ultimately help farmers address contamination issues in their water sources and protect consumers from foodborne illness, said FDA Deputy Commissioner for Food Policy and Response Frank Yiannas.

We must all work together to help ensure the safety of produce to consumers across the country. We will continue to work with our partners in industry, government and academia on this and other longer-term studies on the ecology of human pathogens in specific growing regions, and new efforts as part of the New Era of Smarter Food Safety Initiative.

Thanks to the strong partnership between EPA and the FDA, we can now unleash the innovation needed to develop treatment products for the agricultural water used to irrigate our nations leafy greens, said Alexandra Dapolito Dunn, assistant administrator of EPAs Office of Chemical Safety and Pollution Prevention. We look forward to working with pesticide product manufacturers, innovators, and farmers on this important development that will help protect public health and our environment.

EPAs approval of this protocol allows for companies to develop data on the effectiveness of their products in inactivating foodborne bacteria, such as E. coli or Salmonella, in preharvest agricultural water. Companies may use the data developed to support registration of new treatment products, or amendments to current products labels, for use against microbial contamination in preharvest agricultural water.

Recent outbreaks of foodborne illness associated with the consumption of romaine lettuce and other leafy greens have highlighted the need for a viable option for treating agricultural water against foodborne pathogens. While farmers are not required to treat their agricultural water, these treatments could be a valuable tool to help farmers protect the safety of their produce. There currently are no registered antimicrobial treatment products that are authorized for use on agricultural fields, or for treatment of irrigation water systems or ponds.

This protocol is an important step toward addressing this lack of available treatments for preharvest agricultural water.

Teams of FDA experts have been working collaboratively with partners in the public and private sectors to help protect agricultural water from the many ways it can be contaminated in the environment or from unsanitary practices on a farm. This effort has included hundreds of farm visits over the past few years. In addition, the FDA intends to release a proposed rule in late 2020, to revise certain agricultural water requirements in the Produce Safety Rule and to address practical implementation challenges while protecting public health.

The development and approval of this treatment protocol is one of several steps the agency has taken or intends to take to help improve produce safety, such as through the Leafy Green Action Plan and through the New Era of Smarter Food Safety initiative.

The FDA, an agency within the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, protects the public health by assuring the safety, effectiveness, and security of human and veterinary drugs, vaccines and other biological products for human use, and medical devices. The agency also is responsible for the safety and security of our nations food supply, cosmetics, dietary supplements, products that give off electronic radiation, and for regulating tobacco products.

Uncertainty of Health Claims Usage for Foods and Supplementary Foods in Turkey – Lexology

The health claims for foods and food supplements were regulated by the Ministry of Agriculture and Forestry (MoAF) within the framework of the Turkish Food Codex and accordingly, the health claims to be used in the advertisement, promotion, and label of foods and supplementary foods were permitted by MoAF. In this context, manufacturers and importers must use health claims for the label, promotion, and advertisement of their products in line with the regulations of MoAF.

According to the Turkish Food Codex legislation, it was determined that the food and supplementary food cannot claim to prevent, treat, or cure a disease, and not refer to such features. For instance, a food supplement using the health claim feel comfortable in situations of stress, distress, anxiety, and insomnia with a natural content of the product can be evaluated as unpermitted health claim usage even though the claims are scientifically proven as it directly claims treatment of certain health problems. The Turkish authorities do not want the consumers to use food supplements as substitutes for pharmaceuticals.

The health claims for certain products are specified by the MoAF. For example, the health claim for food supplements containing probiotics is This food contains probiotic microorganisms. Probiotic microorganisms help to regulate the digestive system and support the immune system. Other health claims for the food supplements involving probiotics would violate the regulations. ToAF may apply administrative sanctions for the violating usage of the health claims.

However, a legislative amendment changed the system in the use of health claims and made the procedure vague for almost 2 years. The authority to supervise and allow the health claim usage in the advertisement, promotion, and label of foods and food supplements is passed into the hands of the Turkish Pharmaceuticals and Medical Devices Agency (TTCK) within the Ministry of Health (MoH) by the Law amending certain laws on health published in the Official Gazette dated 05.12.2018. As explained above, the regulations to supervise and allow the health claims on the food supplements were regulated by MoAF and MoAF was implementing these regulations before the authorization of MoH. After the amendment, the MoH decided not to apply the ready-made regulations created by the MoAF and to create a new regulation on the health claims of foods and food supplements to give permission, however, the MoH has not established its regulation yet from December 2018 and it leads uncertainty in the sector.

Supplementary food manufacturers and importers who want to use health claims on the labels of their products must first obtain a health claim permission from MoH and then obtain permission for its label to release the product from MoAF. This latest complex structure to release a food supplement with a health claim on its label concerns the manufacturers and importers as they cannot obtain permission from the MoAF for new health claims even though the regulations of MoAF are still effective, nor can they obtain permission from MoH since MoH does not apply the regulations of MoAF and still have not created its regulation of health claims. This turns into a serious publicity problem for manufacturers and importers and causes them to be deprived of the right to use a health claim that complies with the current and effective regulations.

At this point, the manufacturers and importers are continuing to use the formerly obtained health claim permissions for their old products, but they cannot get a health claim permission for their new products. Also, there is a risk that they may face administrative sanctions from both MoAF and MoH if they violate the effective regulations created by MoAF as both administrative bodies are authorized on this matter.

It is still uncertain when MoH will prepare the regulation and start to permit health claims to food supplement manufacturers and importers.

How Innovation & Regulation Have Changed the Nutrition Industry – Manufacturing.net

According to recentresearch, the global personalized nutrition market was valued at USD $5.59 billion in 2018 and is expected to reach an astounding USD 11.35 billion by the year 2026.

We continue to see anever-increasing trend toward healthier foods, made from ingredients found in nature that protect the planet and its inhabitants. And, as more and more consumers are selecting food based on their individual definitions of healthy, enter the age of personalized nutrition where science and technology can dictate what food is right for usnot only for weight management but, more importantly, to support our overall health and wellness.

That said, although much of this growth has been driven by an increase in consumer demand for health and wellness products. Historically, this hasnt always been the case.

Herbalife Nutrition, for 40 years, has been helping people live healthy lives through nutrition and weve seen numerous changes throughout that time. Changes that have been driven by consumer demand, or by legislation and regulation, or the implementation of innovation and technology. The purpose of these changes have been to improve consumer safety.

They have been embraced by the industry and pioneered by companies like Herbalife Nutrition who have taken a leadership role, making great investments in scientific development, technology, analytical science and manufacturing. Companies now have better and safer products and as the numbers show, have helped to increase consumer trust and use of nutritional products.

The 1980s was a decade that could be characterized as the birth of quality management, partially in response to unforeseen crises and partially because of developments in analyticial and manufacturing technology. While there was much support from consumers, the nutrition business being in its infancy, had few alternative nutrition options. .

At this time, regulations in the United States for foods, and what would later be called dietary supplements were much less comprehensive than today. Although there were regulations for approving food additives and for protecting consumers from adulterated and contaminated foods, many quality standards had not yet been developed.

On the manufacturing technology front, smart cameras were developed, and manufacturers began using machine vision systems to identify characters and dates, and conduct code verification.

In 1982, in an effort to protect consumers, the FDA issued tamper-resistant packing regulations to prevent poisonings, spurred by deaths from cyanide placed in Tylenol capsules. This was important regulation for all packaged consumer goods manufacturers, leading to the Federal Anti-Tampering Act, approved by Congress in 1983, making it a crime to tamper with packaged consumer products.

It wasnt until the 1990s that the industry saw some of the greatest advancements in helping build consumer awareness and education.

It wasnt until the Nutrition Labeling and Education Act was signed into law in 1990 that all packaged foods were required to bear nutrition labeling and all health claims for foods to be consistent with terms defined by the Secretary of Health and Human Services.

The law preempted some state requirements for food standards, nutrition labeling, and health claims and, for the first time, authorized some health claims for foods. As part of the act, food ingredient panel, serving sizes, and terms such as "low fat" and "light" were standardized.

In 1994, the Dietary Supplement Health and Education Act (DSHEA) established specific labeling requirements, provided a regulatory framework, and authorized FDA to promulgate good manufacturing practice regulations for the industry. This act defined "dietary supplements" and "dietary ingredients" and classified them as a subset of foods.

The act also established a commission to recommend how to regulate claims. Additionally, it confirmed that manufacturers and distributors of dietary supplements and dietary ingredients were prohibited from marketing products that were adulterated or misbranded. That meant that these firms were responsible for evaluating the safety and labeling of their products before marketing to ensure that they met all the requirements of DSHEA and FDA regulations.

Together with the passing of the Food and Drug Administration Modernization Act in 1997, we saw the birth of the nutrition industry as we know it today.

As the new millennium rolled around, the impact of the previous decades regulations helped build a foundation for consumer trust as companies continued to beef up their quality assurance processes. Government agencies continued to refine rules and regulations to help protect and educate.

It was not until 2006 that the industry would begin experiencing true change. On December 22, 2006, the President signed into law the Dietary Supplement and Nonprescription Drug Consumer Protection Act, which amended the Federal Food, Drug, and Cosmetic Act (FD&C Act). For the first time in US regulatory history, the Nutrition industry would be held accountable for safety surveillance and mandatory serious adverse event reporting to FDA (effective December 22, 2007).

In addition, the FDA issued in June 2007 the Dietary Supplement Current Good Manufacturing Practices (cGMP). In essence, the cGMP required that the proper controls be in place for dietary products during manufacturing, packaging, labeling, and holding operations. Large companies manufacturing and/or distributing dietary products, were expected to comply with the new regulations. And by 2009, all companies manufacturing and/or distributing dietary products, were required to comply.

These two major regulatory milestones would pave the way for industry to develop more comprehensive and standardized practices for ensuring consumer safety and product quality, both critical components for building consumer trust and regulatory parnterships for good stewardship.

Along with the industry, Hebalife Nutrition experienced great change during these years. Founded in 1980 to sell food and nutrition products, the company had a clear desire to lead the industry in quality, and eventually invested more than $300 million into scientific development, manufacturing facilities and technology, and by 2009 it established its second innovation and manufacturing facility, in Lake Forest, California.

The Company has made significant investments in technology, purchasing advanced testing equipment that was not currently being used by the industry, including a nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR), Mass spectrometry high performance liquid chromatography equipment (LCMS) , next-generation sequencing (NGS) equipment and other cutting edge technologies. The recent investment in these sequencing technologies has diversifyied the Companys Genomic/DNA laboratory to improve DNA analytical techniques for processed botanicals, including extracts, making itone of the only nutrition companies in the world to have its own comprehensive program to completely characterize botanical ingredients.

This most recent decade has been a wake-up call for those manufacturers who have not seized the opportunity to invest and improve their manufacturing processes, product claims and quality control systems. The FDA kicked off the decade in 2011 by introducing one of the most sweeping regulations, 21 CFR Part 117.

This regulation, also known as the Food Safety Modernization Act (FSMA), provided the FDA with new enforcement authorities related to food and food safety standards, also giving them the tools to hold imported foods to the same standards as domestic foods, and directing FDA to build an integrated national food safety system in partnership with state and local authorities.

But regulations and legislation alone are not the answer to improving food quality and food safety. It is imperative that companies, academia and government partner up for the greater good and the benefit of the consumer. Those who can, have an obligation to the industry and consumers to commit to scientific research, transparency and accountability.

Examples of such partnerships includeThe Research Alliance,a partnership with The University of Guelph, a comprehensive public research university in Canada and leader in food science investigation. The Research Alliance, of which Herbalife Nutrition is a founding member, is designed to develop new, mutually agreed standards for the industry, including:

I believe that companies who have committed great amounts of resources, including manpower and financial investment to these systems, have created an atmosphere of transparency and earned consumer trust, positioning themselves for the next decade as industry leaders.

FDA Aggressively Monitoring and Pursuing Advertisements Touting Treatments, Preventions and Cures for COVID-19 – JD Supra

Companies should use caution when making efficacy claims in marketing and advertising of dietary supplements, foods, biological products and other products purported to treat or prevent COVID-19. Although there are investigational vaccines and treatments for COVID-19 being developed, FDA has approved no vaccine or treatment to cure, treat or prevent COVID-19 and is therefore keenly watching the marketplace.

Products that claim to cure, mitigate, treat, diagnose or prevent disease, but that are not proven safe and effective for those purposes, are considered fraudulent by FDA. Recently, FDA set up a task force to closely monitor social media, online retailers and incoming complaints for fraudulent products related to COVID-19. FDA is issuing warning letters to companies for selling fraudulent products with claims to prevent, treat, mitigate, diagnose or cure coronavirus disease COVID-19. As part of the effort, the task force has reached out to multiple retailers to ask for their help in monitoring their online marketplaces for fraudulent products claiming to combat coronavirus.

When evaluating whether a particular statement is deemed fraudulent under FDA rules, it is necessary to identify all express and implied claims that the statement conveys to consumer. Thus, FDA will focus not just on individual phrases or statements in the advertisement, but rather will consider the net impression the advertisement creates as a whole, including the text, images, and depictions.

Examples of efficacy or treatment claims, express or implied, that may warrant a warning from FDA include:

As of the time of publication, FDA reports that no study is known to exist that substantiates any claims that a dietary supplement, food or other product can prevent, treat, or cure COVID-19. Accordingly, companies manufacturing, distributing or otherwise marketing such products should avoid making any COVID-19-specific prevention or treatment claims in advertisements to avoid FDA attention. General references to cure, treatment, or prevention of epidemics or COVID symptoms also are under scrutiny.
