In a peer-reviewed paper by the American Institute of Biological Sciences titled "Social Norms and Global Environmental Challenges" (available ahead of print), to be published in the march 2013 edition of the Institute #39;s yearly journal BioScience, a group of well-known scientists calls on government and scientists to start with the planned social engineering of "norms" and "values" in regards to environmental policies. In addition, they propose putting into effect all sorts of environmental fines and regulations in the spirit of Agenda 21 to hasten the social acceptance of increased governmental control. Also, they propose that the scientific community as a whole should align itself with government "through a concerted effort to change personal and social norms". The group of scientists involved in the upcoming publication include two Nobel Prize winners, economist Kenneth Arrow and political scientist Elinor Ostrom, as well as behavioral scientists, mathematicians, biologists- not to mention population scientists, the most well-known of whom are Paul Ehrlich and Gretchen C. Why is the world so full of "morons" and "degenerates" and what, if anything, can be done to fix them?

These are questions that Robert W. Sussman, PhD, a professor of anthropology in Arts & Sciences at Washington University in St. Louis, will explore Feb. 15 as he addresses the 2013 meeting of the American Association for the Advancement of Science (AAAS) in Boston, Mass. one of the world's largest gatherings of scientific researchers.

Sussman will deliver a talk on "The Importance of the Concept of Culture to Science and Society" (http://aaas.confex.com/aaas/2013/webprogram/Paper8433.html )during a session titled The Whole of Culture: Anthropology Back on Track.

Sussman, author of Man the Hunted: Primates, Predators and Human Evolution, says that science has struggled to understand the mysteries of "less-than-human" beings since the late 1400s when the Spanish Inquisition first formalized state persecution of Jews and Muslims.

And while the horrors of Nazi Germany exposed fatal flaws in science's quest to build the master race, the ethical dilemmas posed by the science of eugenics are far from behind us.

As Sussman presents his lecture on the evolution of scientific and cultural explanations for criminality, homosexuality, drunkenness and other variances in human behavior, scientists elsewhere at the AAAS meeting will be unveiling amazing new techniques for the genetic engineering of humans tools more powerful than a Nazi's wildest dreams.

Meanwhile, legislation currently being considered in Virginia, North Carolina and other states would provide monetary compensation for the survivors of high-minded efforts to improve the gene pool by forcibly sterilizing some 65,000 mostly poor, minority or disabled Americans. Some of these state-sponsored sterilization programs, which first became common in the 1920s, were still in place as recently as the 1970s.

As recent news reports have detailed, at least nine U.S. states, including California, Florida, Georgia, Iowa, Louisiana, Montana, Oregon, Texas and Wisconsin, still have versions of chemical castration laws on their books, usually as a penalty or "fix" for habitual child sexual predators.

State lawmakers hold private strategy meeting on Eugenics Compensation

CHARLOTTE, N.C.

Several state lawmakers from both sides of the aisle held a private strategy meeting with House Speaker Thom Tillis this morning to discuss the recently reintroduced Eugenics Compensation legislation.

Channel 9 has shared the stories of local women who were among the 7,600 North Carolinians sterilized after a state eugenics board deemed they were poor, disabled or unfit many years ago.

Last week, lawmakers on both sides of the aisle reintroduced House Bill 7, which would give living victims of state's sterile sterilization program $50,000 from state funds.

Today, those same advocates met privately to come up with a game plan to prevent the bill and funding from dying in the Senate like it did last year.

House Speaker Thom Tillis held himself personally responsible after its demise. Today, his spokesperson Jordan Shaw told Channel 9 the speaker's strategy to push the bill forward this go round is making sure all lawmakers are educated on the legislation.

Shaw said, "I think it's about making sure that members of the house, members of the Senate understand the history of this movement, understand what the bill would do and what the bill would not do."

Another component of their efforts is to re-energize public awareness and support. This is something already underway at the YWCA Central Carolinas. The agency hosted an open discussion on the topic a few days ago....

CEO Kirsten Sikkelee said, "The community is very interested in understanding this topic. I think most people don't know this was a policy in North Carolina in our living history." Sikkelee also said the YWCA is working online to boost support for the bill.

She said, "We're posting information on Facebook and our website encouraging people to reach out to their elected representatives."
