Janet Suzman says black people arent interested in theatre. How ridiculous

Dame Janet Suzmans remarks that theatre is a white invention, a European invention and white people go to it tell us more about the limits of knowledge hers in particular than anything else. Ive just done a South African play, Suzman added, in comments reported yesterday: My co-star is a young black man from the slums of Cape Town. Totally brilliant actor. I saw one black face in the room, at the Print Room. I rail against that and say, why dont black people come to see a play about one of the most powerful African states?

I recognise in those words the riposte of an exhausted producer who has had enough of low audience turnout. If your idea of build it and they will come does not quite pan out, what better to do than turn on the audience? Its an age-old reaction and can be put down to just that in most circumstances.

But for Suzman, a champion of black rights in apartheid South Africa, and niece of the great anti-apartheid champion Helen Suzman, to have stated that white people go to the theatre, its in their DNA reminds us of the bad old days of eugenics, and worse.

Frustration is no excuse for what is at face value a racist assessment: racist about white people (they have a special theatre DNA?), and above all about black people. It may have been a casual remark, a cliched assessment, but its impact coming from a distinguished actor/director of a distinguished civil rights family is shameful. I hope that Suzman recants what she has said, and takes time out to do what most theatre-makers do when a production is failing to find an audience: check your repertoire. Maybe what youre offering is simply not what the people want.

Theatre does not have one simple definition, of course. People of African and Asian descent have been making it for thousands of years, in open spaces, in temples and on the road.

My direct ancestors African American slaves and freedmen and women made theatre in the European tradition, from early on. For example, the African Grove Theatre, founded by William Henry Brown and James Hewlett, travelled throughout the Caribbean, performing Shakespeare to enslaved people working the tobacco plantations and the murderous sugar cane fields.

The first play written by an African American The Drama of A Stowaway was presented by them, in 1823. It was a success, playing to black and white audiences alike, but mostly black. My instinct is that the play spoke to something the audience knew, in the language they knew, and allowed them to find a human space within their tragic experience.

The African Groves base in New York City was subject to police raids, harassment and white opposition. The company moved to the Lower East Side, within the black community, but harassment forced them to close.

I find this story particularly moving because it reflects what happens to the work of Asian, black, Chinese and First Nations theatre in the west. It is the first to be cut when times are hard; the first to not appear in the canon; the first not to be reviewed when space is limited. In some ways it is boring to recount these travails over and over, but they dont go away. They are always there.

Suzman defends comment that theatre was white invention

'My impression is that commercial British product is very, very white' - Dame Janet Suzman. Photograph: Murdo Macleod

Janet Suzman has defended her controversial comment claiming that theatre was a white invention by stating she was simply noting the lack of racial diversity on the West End stage.

Suzman sparked outrage from figures across the arts on Monday when she responded to comments by the actor Meera Syal, calling on the theatre industry to do more to pull in Asian audiences, by saying theatre is a European invention and white people go to it. Its in their DNA. It starts with Shakespeare.

But in a letter published on Wednesday in the Guardian, Suzman responded to condemnation from people such as Booker prize-winning author Ben Okri and writer Stephen Poliakoff who called her views both ill-informed and ridiculous.

What I was referring to was a picture that I have of the West End or commercial London/ and British product, Suzman wrote. My impression is that commercial British product is very, very white.

Suzmans comments on Monday also implied that the repeated stagings of Shakespeare and Greek tragedies were to blame for driving away black and Asian audiences as the work wasnt in their culture until the Asian writers make plays that will appeal, how can one say that?

It was a point she reiterated in her letter, claiming that in her view the formal beginnings of English drama lay in the work of William Shakespeare. She also said that, until more money was invested in getting the work of Asian writers staged, rather than just that of white males, the problems of racial diversity would continue.

When managements start to invest in Asian or black writers, things can start to pop, Suzman said.

However, Suzman also used the letter to re-emphasise her controversial belief that theatre is a pretty white way of spending an evening and expensive.

It was a view that she said was based on her own experiences of recently starring in a play in South Africa alongside a black actor, where she said she had witnessed only one, maybe two, black people turned up in the whole run ... it was completely packed out with white faces.

Bradford families being pushed "over the abyss" by cruel Government policies, a damning report exploring foodbank …

HUNGRY Bradford families are being pushed "over the abyss" by cruel Government policies, a damning report by a group of MPs warns today.

A landmark investigation - backed by the Archbishop of Canterbury - condemns the explosion in food bank use in the city and elsewhere and demands radical change.

In just six months this year, Bradford Central Foodbank, in Jermyn Street, delivered a staggering 21,996 emergency meals.

And the number of people receiving a three-day aid package has grown to 2,444 between April and September this year, compared with 748 in the same period in 2012.

Bradford Metropolitan Foodbank reported a 450 per cent increase in demand between 2011 and 2013. It currently hands out 800 food parcels a month and gave out 1,000 in August.

Food coordinator Ken Leach said: "The benefits system has changed over recent years, and that has been one of the reasons behind the increase.

"We're giving out more than 10,000 parcels a year now, and there is always a need for more donations."

Frances Atkins, assistant food coordinator, said demand had risen ten-fold since she started volunteering for the charity around three years ago.

"We are seeing an increase in the number of families using our services, as opposed to single people, which is a very worrying trend, especially as we head into winter.

"Supermarkets are very important, as there is food thrown away that is perfectly edible.

Some sterilization victims seek compensation after denied state money

CHARLOTTE, NC (WBTV) -

For decades, the state of North Carolina singled out people it deemed unfit to have children. Those people were forced to have surgery to become sterile. The North Carolina Eugenics Board existed from 1929 to 1974.

Victims came forward and state lawmakers set aside $10 million for compensation. But some who were sterilized may never see that money.

Deborah Blackmon from Charlotte was sterilized when she was 14-years-old. Her sister remembers when it happened, and her niece found the paperwork that shows it happened.

They submitted an application to the Office of Justice for Sterilization Victims and found out in July they were ineligible for the money. Their lawyer, Bob Bollinger, explained that while there is a lot of paperwork showing what happened and that the state paid for it, they lack a crucial piece of paper from Raleigh that says the sterilization was authorized by the Eugenics Board.

That's not what the legislature intended, I don't think, because they had the best of intentions with this. They're trying to right a wrong. I'm sure the legislature did not intend for people who were unlawfully sterilized to not be compensated, because all these sterilizations were done by the state, Bollinger said.

This has been a difficult process for sterilization victims. Deborah Blackmon's sister said Blackmon thinks about being sterilized but would rather not talk about it.

In 1972, Blackmon wrote DEBRA on her sterilization permit. Her sister, Margaret Rankin, remembers that day.

I remember when she came home my mom, my dad and myself went out to the car. My dad wanted everybody to grab a hold of her so she wouldn't fall or anything, Rankin said.

Rankin said she didn't fully understand what happened until her daughter, LaToya Adams, dug up the paperwork.

He may have unravelled DNA, but James Watson deserves to be shunned

James Watson said that while people may like to think that all races are born with equal intelligence, those who have to deal with black employees find this not true. Photograph: Odd Andersen/AFP/Getty Images

The great scientist James Watson is to auction his Nobel prize medal. He told the Financial Times this week that following accusations of racism in 2007, no one really wants to admit I exist, and as a result his income had plummeted and he has become an unperson.

This sounds awful: an 86-year-old hero ostracised for his views, shooed from public life by the people who walk in his scientific shadow.

But its not awful. Watson has said that he is not a racist in a conventional way. But he told the Sunday Times in 2007 that while people may like to think that all races are born with equal intelligence, those who have to deal with black employees find this not true. Call me old-fashioned, but that sounds like bog-standard, run-of-the-mill racism to me.

And this current whinge bemoans a new poverty born of his pariah status. Apart from my academic income, he says, Watson is condemned to a miserly wage that prevents him from buying a David Hockney painting.

His comments reveal a pernicious character entirely unrelated to his scientific greatness, but that is longstanding and not new. Watson is rightly venerated for being half of the pair, along with Francis Crick, who discovered the structure of DNA, and for leading the Human Genome Project. The story of the unveiling of the double helix is messy and complex, just like all biology. It has been pored over and studied and embellished and mythologised. But simply, the race was won by Crick and Watson, and in April 1953 they revealed to the world the iconic double helix. The key evidence, however, Photo 51, was produced by Rosalind Franklin and Ray Gosling, at Kings College London. Franklins skill at the technique known as X-ray crystallography was profound, and was indubitably essential to the discovery. Crick and Watson acquired the photo without her knowledge.

With their unique insight and vision, Crick and Watson deserve their Nobel gongs. Contrary to some narratives, Franklin was not overlooked in this accolade. The rules are quite clear: Nobels are not awarded posthumously. Franklin had died from cancer aged just 37, in 1958, four years before the Nobel committee recognised what is undoubtedly one of the most significant scientific advances of the 20th or any century.

With Nobels, we put people on pedestals and gift them platforms to say whatever they like. Here, they represent science, but contrary to stereotype, there isnt a typical scientist. Were just people.

Some Nobel laureates say stupid ignorant things. Most say little beyond their expertise, and some, such as the president of the Royal Society, Paul Nurse, are great leaders and campaigners for science and society.

The first account of the story of DNA was by Watson himself, and reveals his character. Honest Jim is what he wanted to call the book that was published as The Double Helix in 1968. It is a classic of nonfiction writing, and deservedly so. It is brilliant and racy and gossipy, and full of questionable truths.

African Americans endure 'apartheid'

The United States is a hypocritical, white settler society where Anglo-Americans practice apartheid and eugenics, says Randy Short.

The United States has historically been a racist and white-dominated society where blacks endure ethnic cleansing and lack basic human rights, a researcher and historian in Washington says.

Its historic, Americas lack of judicial fairness, lack of justice, corruption and perversion of justice is not only documented, but its embedded, said Randy Short, a member of the Black Autonomy Network Community Organization.

The Dred Scott decision (1857) that declared no black could ever be a citizen of the United States is essentially the guiding spirit of the legal system in the United States, Dr. Short told Press TV on Wednesday.

Its unfair and its corrupt and blacks dont have human rights, he said. The United States is a hypocritical, white settler society where Anglo Americans practice apartheid and eugenics, in particular against African Americans.

Dr. Short said a grand jurys decision on Monday not to indict a white police officer for the shooting death of a black teenager in Ferguson, Missouri, shows that America is a fraud.

Thousands of people protested across the US for a second night on Tuesday after Darren Wilson was absolved for the fatal shooting of Michael Brown in August.

Mass protests erupted in New York, Los Angeles, Washington, DC, Oakland, Seattle, Boston and several other cities on Tuesday evening, as well as Ferguson itself where the shooting occurred.

Theyre killing our children and pushing mass abortion on our womenand pushing ethnic cleansing that they call gentrification, Dr. Short said.

The UN High Commissioner for Human Rights, Zeid Raad Al Hussein, on Tuesday voiced concern over institutionalized discrimination and the disproportionate number of young African Americans being killed by police in the United States.
