What happened to the digital ecosystem of Mexican tourism a week ago? – Explica

Only God knows, also the Mexican tourism secretary, the agency Braintivity, S.A. seven secret partners, according to the shareholder of Tecnosen, S.A, supplier and former partner of Braintivity, S.A. what really happened to the Mexican digital ecosystem in the last thirty days. It is a kind of postmodern melodrama. As a Latin Netflix plot that makes you laugh and embarrass others for one of the countries that is a world tourism power and that has one of the largest infrastructures in terms of service and resources on the planet.

It is something like a smoothie and a sad plot where we mix politicians, corruption, lawsuits between individuals, little transparency in concessions or tenders, juniors, some urban tribes such as Mirreyes, Fresters, Tuluminatis (strawberries-hipsters of Tulum), perhaps children of negligent government officials and cadres.

I will try to explain this tragicomedy of Mexican tourism. Although it is a complex issue and a long time ago. I must give credit to who deserves it. I understood a lot from the great journalistic coverage of this particular topic that has been done in the digital forum on Facebook of Altavoz Turismo where journalists Marco Daniel Guzmn and Jos Antonio Lpez Sosa exercise LIVE every Thursday. They interviewed everyone involved in this laundry lawsuit except the people from the tourism ministry. And so one joins parts of this Latin American soap opera. That it is interesting and generates morbidity and sadness at the same time.

Once upon a time there was a digital ecosystem of various portals that were dedicated to promoting tourism in Mexico, which were called visitmexico.mx, visitmexico.com.mx, and visitmexico.com, among other pages of tourist content that since the 1990s have been groped between private initiative and governments to promote tourism in Mexico with more failures than successes.

The strongest portal, with the highest real organic traffic and which reached between 600 thousand and one million visits per month was visitmexico.com. Thus alone, almost by divine miracle, by work and grace of our Virgin of Guadalupe. For more mismanagement and corruption of previous administrations, despite everything, this portal took her there. It generated its organic traffic.

A year ago, it was awarded under a direct concession and with a self-sustainability regime which means that it is only given permission to use the portal, the ecosystem, the name of Mexico and visitmexico (which by the way Ana has registered Maria Olabuenaga in her name at the IMPI) in exchange for marketing the content and generating traffic to the ecosystem and activations for between 40 million dollars each year. This is that the Secretary of Tourism would not pay Braintvity, S.A, nor a penny to the agency in this case in exchange for obtaining the permits and the contract. Furthermore, I would not pay him the 600 pesos that it costs to pay the annual domain of http://www.visitmexico.com.

The face in all this was always given by Carlos Gonzlez and Marcos Achar as directors of Vistmexico. They were always good Prs with specialized media and projected credibility until just under a month ago. That rumors began to emerge about the stagnation of the portal, that if they had, they no longer had money, that if they were not managing to market it well, etc. Anyway, just under a week ago Boom! They stop your commercial liquid sleep.

They download their content and Tecnosen, SA, their former partner (in theory, hosting provider and IT consultancy) or friend or it is not well known what type of interpersonal relationship they had before, hijacks their domain and begins to carry out a large campaign of public relations through the hijacked portal and with good phrasing begins to telegraph how things are according to their version and reality. From film. It got really good.

What we intuit many that happened is that it is a problem for money and business between individuals and I hope not also between politicians involved as well. But while what happens? The obvious. That Mexico is badly stopped. It hurts us in our brand as a country. My humble opinion as a marketing consultant is that they have to start again, make a tender and call more transparent to form a more winning shared economy tourism ecosystem. Beyond a content generating blog portal or a travel quote. A true ecosystem of branded content with a Market Place to sell shared economy experiences that we really need to sell more than ever in such recessive years to come.

As for the Ministry of Tourism. Gee, I dont know what to think. So much distance and silence makes us think very badly. There are already many rumors. And all of this can project neglect. It is necessary to go out to deny false information with facts and content. It is rumored that one of those seven mysterious and anonymous frester partners of the founder of Tecnosen S.A. (Sergio Loredo Foyo) is Mike Jr. himself, the son of the main tourism team in Mexico. It is essential that the tourism secretariat faces this problem that goes beyond online communication. Tourism will be one of the most important businesses in our country in the very near future. And the heritage of many Mexicans.

Enabling Business Success Through Reliability, Professionalism and Agility – Developing Telecoms

The recent Huawei Better World Summit set out to explore how ICT can be used to contain the spread of COVID-19 more effectively and boost post-pandemic economic recovery.

The pandemic has changed the world around us, touching on every aspect of work and life. With a wide range of participants including telecom carriers, regulators, analysts, media, and partners from around the globe joining online, the Better World Summit delved into how ICT is creating new value in a wide range of fields, including telemedicine, remote education, teleworking, and public health services.

During the Summit, Developing Telecoms had a virtual meeting with Wang Yifan, President, Service & Software Marketing & Solution Sales Department at Huawei. We started with an overview of Huaweis service and software business.

WYF: Over the past 30 years, Huawei's service and software products have provided professional services for 1,500 networks of more than 300 telecom carriers worldwide. Currently, we maintain over 18 million network elements, handle over 200 major events every year, provide over 600,000 technical support events, and resolve over 1 million support tickets annually. Huawei provides assurance for internet services and voice calls for 3 billion people worldwide.

DT: What impact has the COVID-19 pandemic had on telecom operators?

WYF: During the COVID-19 epidemic, operators experienced rapid changes in traffic hotspot areas as many customers switched to working or studying from home rather than at offices and colleges. The movement of traffic from CBDs and college campuses to residential areas within a short time period has posed a big challenge for carrier networks.

Fortunately, Huawei has the expertise to handle this. For example, after the Mexico earthquake in 2017, Huawei helped operators restore telecom services quickly in the disaster area. Huawei has also worked with operators for more than 15 years to provide reliable network assurance for the Hajj pilgrimage when more than 3 million Muslims visit Saudi Arabia every year.

DT: What are the most important factors in providing reliable service assurance for operators?

WYF: Huawei believes that it is only possible to ensure stable network operations if you deliver a reliable and professional service system on an open and agile digital platform. Huawei provides global operators with five services to keep their operations continuous. These are rigid maintenance services backed by a good rapport with customers, uninterrupted network operations, continuous spare parts supply and 24/7 Technical Assistance Centre (TAC) response.

DT: Many telecom software and services vendors would claim to provide a similar level of support. What makes the services offered by Huawei different?

WYF: There are five key factors to support the reliable services from Huawei. First, Huawei has well-established management systems, certified by a host of international standard organizations including ISO/TL/IEC/OHSAS and others. Second, Huawei has 22,000 frontline employees and 120,000 from partners across 170 countries and regions to provide on-site services in a timely manner.

Third, Huawei has a comprehensive spare parts support system, including five global spare parts supply centres, nine global spare parts operation centres, and 16 global spare parts maintenance centres. These are critical to supporting operators, particularly in the most remote areas, and we do not believe other vendors can match the scale and reliability of this network.

Fourth, Huawei has a three-level technical support system consisting of global Research and Development, GTAC/TAC, and project maintenance team.

Finally, Huawei encapsulates and builds a large number of successful experience and knowledge assets accumulated over 30 years in the telecom industry on the platform together with models generated through machine learning. Moreover, Huawei opens its digital platform to customers and partners to continuously improve service quality and efficiency.

DT: How important are open systems?

WYF: Huawei Service and Software has been building its knowledge and machine learning models in the telecom industry on a digital platform that is open to the entire industry based on our more than 30 years experience. This platform is continuously evolving and the operators' teams and ecosystem partners are able to develop their own applications through this open platform to achieve business agility.

DT: In what ways is this digital platform an open system?

WYF: We believe that real value creation is based on the Experts + Engineers + Platform +Knowledge Assets + Ecosystem Partners" model, which is a truly open system. Huaweis digital platform provides open APIs that can be invoked by other systems and partners; it also provides an application development centre (ADC) that enables partners and operators' in-house teams to develop versatile Apps.

DT: How much do developers contribute to the Huawei open system platform?

WYF: Currently, Huawei has developed 80% of common applications (Apps), including network planning, construction, maintenance, optimization, and intelligent operation. The other 20% of customization requirements are met by our ecosystem partners. This open multi-ecosystem partnership platform will benefit the entire industry and continuously create value.

DT: Are there other areas where Huawei Service and Software is creating value for operators?

WYF: Huawei has developed AI applications such as a digital survey App which improves site survey efficiency by 30% and requires only consumer-level cameras. And in the environment and green energy area, which is of very great concern to operators, Huawei reduces operators energy consumption with innovative technology. The PowerStar solution saves 15% power consumption for wireless networks and 9% to 17% for data centre PUE optimization.

DT: The Better World Summit sets out to explore the strategic foundations that ICT lays for a brighter, more prosperous future. How would you sum up the way in which software and service will contribute to this in the post COVID-19 world?

WYF: Huawei Service and Software will rely on our professional and reliable global service team, an open and agile digital platform, powerful R&D innovation resources, and ecosystem partners to help the telecom industry achieve digital transformation during and following COVID-19. We believe in enabling business success through reliability, professionalism and agility and in working with telecom carriers and ecosystem partners to achieve sustainable development and win-win outcomes.

How Ice Scouring in the Antarctic Disrupts Ecosystems – State of the Planet

Along the Antarctic coast, icebergs regularly break away from glaciers and plunge into the nutrient-rich waters below. Carried by currents and wind, these icebergs then scrape along the bottom of the seafloor, wiping out the marine communities in their paths. These powerful events throw marine ecosystems into chaos, causing massive die-offs in the affected areas. Researchers recently dove into this hostile environment to record the stunning ecological transformations taking place. Their findings were published in Marine Environmental Research earlier this year.

The study examined the shallows adjacent to the western Antarctic Peninsula, an area highly disturbed by ice scouring when icebergs break off from glaciers and gouge the seafloor. It presents the connections between these ecosystem disturbances and the structure of assemblagesthe groups of organisms which live in the surrounding community.

Disturbances have been widely studied and are recognized as a crucial determinant of an areas species richness and diversity. However, this study stands out in its approach. Speaking with GlacierHub, lead author Ben Robinson explained how the research team built upon previous studies to develop a more comprehensive understanding of what factors influence the repopulation of an area following a disturbance.

Although Antarctica might be thought of as a hostile environment, the Southern Ocean is actually nutrient-rich and home to diverse marine life. To study how disturbances shape these marine communities, scuba divers and remote-operated robots dipped into the icy waters of the Southern Ocean. They collected data on how two different groups of species that live along the seafloor respond to ice scour disturbances. One group is mobile, and the other group, bryozoa, is stationary. Bryozoa are interesting little invertebrates, known to be filter feeders and hermaphrodites. Photos of Robinsons research expeditions show starfish, which prey upon bryozoa, scattered across the rocky seafloor.

The study found that the mobile and stationary species were impacted differently by ice scour. Robinson and his coauthors concluded that three disturbance factors must be studied to fully understand how disturbance influences the organisms in a community. These disturbance factors include the time between disturbance events, and whether disturbance events occur in close proximity to one another or across a wider area.

Robinson believes that understanding disturbance and assemblage structure provides insight into the workings of an ecosystems food web. He explained that disturbance events are potentially linked with lower species richness. When there are fewer disturbances and prey is abundant, more predator species move in; conversely, when disturbances cause die-offs of prey species, predator species are also affected.

Robinson lived in Antarctica for three years, working as a marine biologist for the British Antarctic Survey. The research he conducted during this time resulted in this article, which was pulled from one chapter of Robinsons PhD dissertation, and contributes to a wider discussion of disturbance. While no longer living in the frigid Antarctic, he still plans on continuing to analyze his data, this time considering how disturbance impacts a wider range or deeper parts of the ocean.

Robinson is hopeful that the results of this study will help researchers understand other disturbance events. He and his co-authors think the way marine life in the Antarctic respond to ice scour differently provides insight into the way a forest ecosystem may respond to fire. The authors believe their results provide further evidence for a hypothesis published in a 2017 article, which explained how only considering the time-since-fire in forests will not capture the full impact of disturbance. They hope to see their method of studying multiple disturbance factors applied to other events such as forest fires.

Speaking with GlacierHub, Robinson also highlighted the importance of understanding disturbance events and assemblage structure in light of climate change. Climate change is drastically altering the Antarctic landscape. However, these alterations are not just aesthetic retreating glaciers are likely to cause significant changes to disturbance regimes.

Image from one of Robinsons research expeditions (Source: Ben Robinson)

Its not just glaciers that are impacted; sea ice is also dropping as a result of changing wind patterns and climate change, Robinson explained. He described how normally when the sea ice freezes over there isnt much disturbance, but sea ice has been decreasing. With less sea ice to prevent icebergs from plunging down into marine ecosystems, Robinson says in the short term, youre getting a lot more disturbances.

Brian Buma, a biologist at the Alaska Climate Adaptation Science Center at the University of Alaska, confirmed that climate change makes understanding disturbance events more urgent because we cannot assume typical disturbance-and-then-recovery processes. In other words, climate-induced changes in disturbance make the resilience of ecosystems much more uncertain.

Icebergs float in the Gerlache Strait near the Antarctic Peninsula (Source: Wiki Commons/W. Bulach)

Andrew Constable, a marine ecologist for the Australian Government, and a lead author on the IPCCs sixth assessment report, raised some concerns about the methodology employed by Robinson and his co-authors. Constable thought the studys use of two highly distinct species one mobile and one stationary made it more difficult to understand.

However, Buma found their methodology to be straightforward, saying it will be wonderful to see how long the authors can keep the study going. Buma said the results were consistent with what you would see in any other more typically studied disturbance system. He also thought it was appropriate that Robinson and his co-authors drew connections between ice scour and forest fires. He said by doing so they connect their study to broader theory. He appreciated that the authors linked different types of disturbance, saying it should be common practice to compare disturbance types, because only by unifying across disturbances can we ever get to a theory of disturbance ecology. That is still elusive.

The results of chilly dives into the blue waters of the Southern Ocean have the potential to inform relationships between disturbance events and assemblage regimes in lands with vastly different climates and ecosystems. As climate change threatens ecosystems around the world, this study serves as an important reminder of the beauty, fragility, and interconnectedness of this planet.

DIA Launches Governance Token Distribution to Create the Decentralised Wikipedia for Financial Data – GlobeNewswire

Zug, Switzerland, Aug. 03, 2020 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) -- DIA, (Decentralised Information Asset) the open-source data and oracle platform for the DeFi (Decentralised Finance) ecosystem, announces the first step to decentralise its governance by public distribution of its governance token on Monday, August 3, 2020. The highly anticipated event will give participants the opportunity to acquire DIAs Governance Token (DIA).

Founded in 2018 as a Swiss Association, DIAs vision is to make validated and auditable financial market data accessible and open-source to both traditional and decentralised financial markets. Rather than sourcing and providing data itself, the DIA platform sets crypto-economic incentives that drive the sourcing and validation of data by the community.

The exponential growth of DeFi calls for more resilient data solutions

Financial data is the critical foundation of any financial market. Both in traditional and digital asset markets the cost of bad data has become tragically apparent in the wake of scandals surrounding manipulation and a lack of transparency, causing severe loss of funds and calling for more trustworthy and transparent solutions.

In particular, the recent exponential growth of DeFi applications have sparked a new interest in the data architecture that supports this ecosystem. While a range of providers are already catering to the increasing demand for data, DIAs approach fuels the hope that the ecosystems data providers will leverage the benefits of decentralised governance to provide the highest quality data and make it accessible to all market actors.

DIAs co-founder and Association President Michael Weber explains, With a DeFi industry already worth $5 billion and growing at a rapid pace, trusted data will become the most crucial building block for the DeFi economy. We believe that data needs to be community-driven, decentralised, and transparent. The DIA Association will be positioned to provide the best possible oracles by leveraging the decentralisation of DIA as an organisation and a community that is incentivised at each step the process.

DIAs Governance Token Distribution

Following its private sale which sold out in just 3 days, DIA will make its governance token accessible in a novel allocation mechanism dubbed bonding curve distribution. This will be the first public distribution of DIAs governance token and aims to decentralise governance to the broader DeFi and blockchain ecosystem and raise funds for the continued development of the platform. The distribution will be publicly accessible via DIAs website starting today, Monday, August 03, 2020 at 3 pm CET. The full process is explained in greater detail on DIAs official Medium blog.

DIAs team brings extensive experience in blockchain and finance

DIA is run by a team of experienced web3 founders and financial market experts and is backed by notable venture capital funds, including Outlier Ventures (OV), Continue Capital, and TRG Capital as well as angel investors from the traditional financial space. As one of the star performers to emerge from OVs Base Camp Accelerator, DIA has received praise as one of the most promising upcoming DeFi projects, dedicated to the democratisation of data and company transparency.

Following the upcoming distribution, DIA is planning several other mechanisms to allocate its governance tokens to key DeFi market actors and innovators as part of the DIA Ecosystem Token Pool and DIA Labs. DIAs goal is to reach a full DAO implementation by 2025. More details will be announced soon.

Jamie Burke, Founder of Outlier Ventures, explains, DIAs unique proposition is to democratise the provision, access, and usage of financial information by leveraging the wisdom and power of the crowd. Their mission is to make financial data standardised, open-source and accessible to everyone and under the same terms. We believe that decentralised finance will be a multi-billion dollar industry and that DIA are leading the innovation that will secure a solid and fair foundation for this industry.

About DIA: DIA (Decentralised Information Asset) is an open-source, financial information platform that utilises crypto-economic incentives to source and validate data. Market actors can supply, share and use financial and digital asset data. Based in Switzerland, DIA operates as a non-profit association.

IPL returns but will be played in UAE; Indian cricket ecosystem loses out – Times of India

The 2020 version of IPL is finally going to be held but it will be the UAE that is to play host. Even if it is not the best option, it is still a welcome development. The long hiatus appears to have affected the financial health of the cricket board, BCCI. Media reports suggest payments within the cricket ecosystem have been delayed.

The forthcoming IPL will be the longest ever edition, 53 days. It plans to tweak rules to account for the pandemic- unlimited Covid-19 substitutes will be allowed. The tournament will be held in a bio-secure environment following the example set recently by England and West Indies who played a full fledged test series.

Ideally, the IPL should have been held in India given that it is over six weeks away. However, the inclination of state governments to revert to lockdowns and the slow pace of return to normalcy has made it impossible. It represents lost economic opportunities for many in the Indian cricket ecosystem.

Fanbytes Fund aims to create an ecosystem to support Black businesses and creators – The Drum

Influencer marketing agency Fanbytes has committed 100,000 towards campaigns for Black-owned businesses and by Black creators.

It further aims to invest 1m over the next 12 months in the hope of kickstarting a new ecosystem of Black talent.

Due to a lack of funding, many Black businesses are unable to elevate their propositions, and Fanbytes data has revealed that while Black creators have a click-through-rate (CTR) of 2.2x more than white influencers, they are often overlooked because they do not fit the typical image of influencers.

These biases are damaging, and perpetuate a cycle of inaccessibility, said Fanbytes founder Tim Armoo: The Fanbytes Fund is here to break the cycle by providing previously inaccessible marketing support, so [brands and creators] can get to the next level and go against this cycle. If we can play a role in this for some of the brightest companies then we can help kick start the next generation of Black-owned companies.

The fund will back consumer-focused businesses "around the 5-15k monthly revenue" mark, for which the paid support is "enough to take them to the next level".

It will fund their influencer marketing campaigns, which will also feature predominantly Black creators.

In recent weeks, many companies and agencies have paid lip service to the Black Lives Matter movement by attempting to reform their practices, yet as Armoo pointed out, most fail to act upon their promises.

Most of the people who are driving this change are not from the community themselves and they are not practitioners - they dont understand the real reasons for the problems these audiences face.

Luckily I am both a working-class and Black boy, who through advertising and tech has pulled himself up, and I also understand the real reasons behind the disparity.

Understanding the messaging and the effectiveness of the influencers' content enables us at Fanbytes to see what companies are missing in their marketing strategy and to bring these creators to the forefront.

Enabled by Fanbytes, the fund is also assisted by its investors including Jerry Bulhmann (Dentu Aegis chief executive), John Taysom and the team at Founders Factory.

If the fund achieves its aims it will provide a helping hand to Black entrepreneurs, and assist overlooked creators receive the attention and payment they deserve.

The allure and trajectory of the Egyptian tech ecosystem, as told by one of its oldest institutional investors – TechCabal

Of the seven countries in North Africa, Egypt stands out in the remarkable acceleration of its technology industry in the last nine years. Prior to the 2011 revolutions that swept across much of the region, there were not a lot of players in the space.

Those were very difficult times to start a business and to find capital, says Tamer Azer, Principal at Sawari Ventures.

There werent that many players in the space outside of Flat6Labs, which is probably the regions largest accelerator.

But post-revolution and as the country moved towards political stability as the years wore on, the rise of the internet as an influential tool drove a lot of the younger population towards tech entrepreneurship. As a result of this momentum, increased capital [PDF] and the advent of more accelerators and incubators followed.

Now, weve got multiple new funds, a number of accelerators, seed investors, multiple angel networks, as well as a few Series A investors in the market including Sawari Ventures, Azer says.

Sawari Ventures, which has been around since 2010, is one of a few Series A venture capital firms investing in startups with clear product market fit.

With its US$40 million fund, the firm invests anywhere between US$1-3 million per ticket and up to US$5 million for the life of a portfolio company with operations in Egypt, Tunisia or Morocco. In the early 2010s, the firm started out building Flat6Labs, which was the first and is now the largest accelerator programme in the country, as well as offering seed funding to the trove of new startups that were emerging.

Its US$40 million fund is part of a US$70 million target Sawari Ventures North Africa Fund I which it plans to invest in the North Africa region in the next four years.

Just last month, co-leading with Partech Ventures, Sawari made a US$4million investment in MoneyFellows, a financial technology startup for loans and collective savings. It has also invested in Swvl, the tech-enabled public transportation company among a number of others.

Since the coronavirus pandemic began late last year, Startup Genome has been conducting a series of research work to monitor the effect of the global health crisis on venture capital funding in the continent and around the world. Since December 2019, global VC funding has fallen 20% and while momentum picked up towards the end of March, funding levels are still understandably lower than pre-crisis numbers.

While a number of sectors have seen significant uptake as a result of the pandemic, many others will bear the brunt of the economic fallouts of the crisis now and in the coming months.

In Startup Genomes The Impact of COVID-19 on Global Startup Ecosystems: Global Startup Survey report, about 50% of the startups surveyed were trying to raise funds pre-COVID. Of the percentage that had a term sheet (17%) signed or unsigned, only 13% of them were able to close the rounds. Many have had the fundraising processes delayed, completely cancelled or investors that have gone cold turkey.

When you think about the impact of the pandemic on the technology ecosystem, it is natural that some companies will survive while others wont.

To say now how this will change the investment strategies will be tricky, Azer explains.

Because you have to think of investment strategy as a function of opportunity cost and the performance of your portfolio companies.

If an investors portfolio companies are handling the crisis well and taking advantage of the business opportunities it presents, then this will mean the investors opportunity cost will be low and theyll have more capital to invest. However, if an investors portfolio companies need funding support then there is less capital now available but then, they might have fewer companies at the end of the day so that opportunity cost might remain unchanged.

There are definitely people looking to invest in industries that are thriving because of this; fintech, healthtech, e-grocery, e-commerce, those types of things, Azer says.

Thats where a lot of people are going right now.

As with many other institutional investors at this time, much of the work has been to stay in constant communication with portfolio companies to understand how the pandemic is impacting the business but also to ensure that staff welfare is priority and that founders are looking to pivot where necessary.

If any of our portfolio companies need money we help them secure that funding, bid around for and/or participate in a round for them, Azer says.

A lot of companies have had to take drastic measures to cut fast and deep while a number of others have had to explore new services and revenue streams to stay afloat.

One of our companies called Elves [a virtual assistant platform] has been moving into some fintech solutions, he says.

Ultimately as a company you can either stay the course and lower your operating costs or find new revenue streams.

One of the other conversations around how the pandemic will impact the ecosystem has been around valuations with many saying that the time presents opportunities to bring them lower down to their actual values. Azer is of the opinion that valuations will not drop just as a result of the clime but will also be subject to an investors opportunity cost based on how its portfolio performs, how many companies survive and how much capital is left in the investors fund.

Its really hard to say now, he said during the Africa Tech Summit Connects podcast interview in May.

And since this is a game of time, valuations will decline or not for a relatively young fund and a vintage or older fund a lot more differently.

If youve got an older fund or early vintage fund, youre going to want to invest in things like fintech and healthtech. But a young fund manager might look to also go into something like travel, Azer says on our call.

If you go into travel now, youre looking at significantly value deals which you can take care of because you have a much longer runway, he says of young funds.

Exits are rare and far between in the African tech ecosystem but the MENA region has seen a number of significant exits. Flat6Labs, Sawaris accelerator and early stage fund exited its first company, Harmonica [online dating platform] to Match Group, owners of Tinder and OkCupid, last year. Also last year, Helios Investment Partners partially exited Fawry, Egypts leading fintech platform through an IPO on the Egyptian Stock Exchange.

Why these arent happening with as much gusto as investments are coming into the ecosystem across the continent is a combination of factors including valuations, a problem of scale oftentimes driven by the gaps in venture funding through the lifecycle of a startup from early into growth stage.

As early stage investors it is our responsibility to push companies further down the value chain, helping them grow to the point where they attract international interest, because ultimately, the funding gap here means that you can probably take a company to series A or B but once you get to that point you really need to be able to bring international players to move it further down the value chain, Azer explains.

This is the next step for the investment players in the Egyptian and North African ecosystem.

Every entrepreneur, every VC, probably across the continent is really focused on exits because it creates the use case plus attracts more funding for entrepreneurs to feel that what they do is going to reward them eventually.

And so everyone is trying to support companies to exit because that is how we get the snowball effect that we need for this industry to grow.

We still havent seen a unicorn so to speak. But we have been seeing a lot more smaller exits, Azer says.

We are seeing some local investors exit their stakes and make fantastic results and we are, as investors and as an investor community, trying to collaborate to get more companies to that threshold.

With regards to scale, oftentimes the mandates of investors mean that their investments are unable to cross their geographical terrain and so very few investors can cross markets. One thing he advises is for investors across regions to do more deals together leveraging localised networks and market understanding to help the companies grow in their new markets. But this is not very straightforward with investors given the mandates that their funds come with.

You need local ecosystems to be able to support companies to grow to a certain extent so that they can then expand into other countries on the continent and that is an iterative process. It is a labour of love and it will take time.

The future is even brighter for the ecosystem as more of these smaller exits occur, investments continue to come in and the ecosystem continues to mature in the quality of technology solutions that they are building to solve the country and regions problems.

Two years ago, the ecosystem came together to create what it calls The Startup Manifesto, a comprehensive document of the ecosystems challenges, areas where it needed assistance and in what ways.

It was our way as an ecosystem to get our voice heard and to get together and decide what are the things we need and want, not just from a regulatory perspective, Azer explains.

The Manifesto is publicly available for all the ecosystem players as a reference and working document and will serve as a basis for engagement with government and regulatory agencies as the ecosystem grows. Already, through funds like Egypt Ventures and an accelerator, Falak, the government is becoming more involved in the activities in the space.

Scientists Say We Need to Save The World’s Parasites Before We Lose Them Forever – ScienceAlert

There are lots of animals that need conservation help. Cuddly creatures like pandas and koalas, or brainy beasts like whales and octopuses, just to name a few. But a team of scientists is urging us to not forget one particularly unlovable group that also needs our assistance: parasites.

Parasites, the team explains, have a bit of a PR problem. They're not just blood-sucking monsters, or freeloading fiends (which, don't get us wrong, they still are). As the team says, parasites also perform incredibly significant ecological roles.

Parasites influence the survival and reproduction of many host species, and form vital links across food chains. For example, they increase predatory birds' killifish kills by up to 30 times by messing with the fish's brains in a way that makes them more vulnerable to the birds. Alas, so many of these complicated interactions are unknown to us.

"Parasites are an incredibly diverse group of species, but as a society, we do not recognise this biological diversity as valuable," saysecologist Chelsea Wood from the University of Washington.

"The point of this paper is to emphasise that we are losing parasites and the functions they serve without even recognising it."

The paper is part of an entire issue of the journal Biological Conservation devoted to parasite conservation. There's an article about how efforts to save parasitic host species still threaten the parasites due to differences in captivity, and oneon how we assess the conservation status of parasites. The focus of Wood's team's paper is on how to create a global parasite conservation plan.

"Found throughout the tree of life and in every ecosystem, parasites are some of the most diverse, ecologically important animals on Earth - but in almost all cases, the least protected by wildlife or ecosystem conservation efforts," the authors explain in their paper.

"Our working group identified 12 goals for the next decade that could advance parasite biodiversity conservation through an ambitious mix of research, advocacy, and management."

Now, it might sound a bit weird to get so invested in parasites, when we're not even sure how all the animals they live in are faring, and at a time when all sorts of speciesare facing extinction threats.

As the team explains, cuddly or charismatic animals get the bulk of funding when it comes to conservation, and we've only identified around 10 percent of the parasites that inhabit them. That's a problem.

"If species don't have a name, we can't save them," says co-lead author Colin Carlson, a biologist at Georgetown University.

"We've accepted that for decades about most animals and plants, but scientists have only discovered a fraction of a percentage of all the parasites on the planet. Those are the last frontiers: the deep sea, deep space, and the world that's living inside every species on Earth."

The team of researchers from the US, Spain, and Australia have identified 12 goals for the next decade to help keep our parasitic friends around for generations to come.

(Carlson et al., Biological Conservation, 2020)

These are split into four groups data collection and synthesis, risk assessment and prioritisation, conservation practice, and outreach and education.

As you can see in the image above, these goals are ambitious. Everything from education about parasitism to formally protecting endangered parasites needs to get done.

The twelfth goal though, might be the most pioneering of them all.

"In the spirit of that challenge, we propose a final ambitious goal: describe half of parasite diversity on Earth," the team writes.

"Some targets will be difficult to estimate, and initial estimates will have wide confidence intervals, especially for groups like parasites of invertebrate hosts that are under described and under-represented in biodiversity data. Even so, systematically using the best-available methods to define initial 50 percent description targets will vastly improve our understanding of global parasite biodiversity."

Just a note here that the team isn't focused on human or domesticated animal parasites so you don't need to worry about them formally protecting the ring worm, ticks, or lice we all know and love (or hate).

But that doesn't mean that the researchers don't expect some backlash, especially from those not already in the parasite biology corner.

"Fully describing 50 percent of parasite biodiversity, like all the other goals identified here, could be dismissed as overly ambitious and too low priority given the many fronts on which resources for combatting global change biology are already spread thin,"the team writes.

"Climate change, emerging diseases, and mass extinction are already monumental crises that desperately need more personnel and funding.

"However, we believe all available scientific evidence suggests that neglecting the hidden world of parasites only limits our efficacy in fighting these other battles, and will lead to more and worse unexpected outcomes."

So next time you think of animals that need protecting, maybe spare a thought for the humble parasite. Or we might end up losing these creatures and any vital role they play within our ecosystems before we even discover what they are.

The paper has been published in Biological Conservation.

Praful Patel: Maharashtra Govt. is helping AIFF with another Centre of Excellence in Navi Mumbai – Goal.com

The President informed that the Maharashtra Government will build a Centre of Excellence in Navi Mumbai on 19 acres of land...

Praful Patel, the President of All India Football Federation (AIFF), informed that the Maharashtra government will be building a 'centre of excellence' in Navi Mumbai on 19 acres of land which would be utilised for the benefit of Indian football.

The AIFF has already undertaken an ambitious centre of excellence project at Rajarhat, Kolkata which is set to be completed in a couple of years' time.

"The Maharashtra government will give us 19 acres of land to set up another centre of excellence. They will build infrastructure and AIFF will be involved in the operations," informed Patel during a webinar hosted by Football Delhi.

TheSenior Vice President of AFC chalked out how efficiently the federation has worked to turn a 100 crore ecosystem to almost a 1000 crore sport in the last decade.

"It was the right decision to host the age group football World Cups. It is a good beginning. If we had this before then our national team could have done much better.Previously, the whole ecosystem would have come to 100 crores and now it has grown exponentially to almost 1000 crores.

"We have come a long way. AFC (Asian Football Confederation) has supported us to the fullest. Even FIFA now understands that Indian football needs to be supported and it needs to have a better standard of football. Dato Windsor (AFC General Secretary) has helped us a lot in solving challenges.

"Unless India and China play at that level globally the money does not come. It has to be commercially successful. We need to professionalize Indian football more. The I-League was the beginning and now The ISL is doing the job. Players are getting paid handsomely and more clubs have come up," elaborated Patel.

The Member of Parliament also stressed on the importance of grassroots football and suggested that five SAI (Sports Authority of India) facilities should be made football-centric to develop the sport across the country.

"We had just one I-League a decade back. Some clubs were floundering and some were doing okay. The ecosystemneeded to be changed. We had no organisedgrassroots programme. The Tata Football Academy was one the only torch-bearer that time and we had so many players coming out from the setup. TFA was ahead of its time. Barring that, there was no structure at all. So these things needed to be changed. If one SAI facility in each zone is made a football-centric facility, then these kids can be put in one facility and then we can provide them with the right inputs without running our resourcesthin.

"Very few people realise what the odds challenges, roadblocks are that we overcome each day to become what we are today. Peoplejudge by how the Indian nationalteam is playing. If the national team plays well peoplestart takingthe sport seriously. We had a long list of things to do. Indian football has done much better in the last 10 years. We came to FIFA rankings 94 last year from 170 odd a couple of years ago. But that's not good enough. The top 50-60 are so competitive that anybody can beat anyone, on their given day. We are far from that level," stated Patel.

The AIFF supremo is set to meet with Sports Minister Kiren Rijiju in New Delhi next week to form a blueprint of setting up five zonal committees. These would be responsible to scout the hidden talent that are spread across the length and breadth of the country.

How the ADL is working to end Facebooks thriving ecosystem of Holocaust denial – Haaretz

Following its years-long effort to fight Holocaust denial on Facebook, the Anti-Defamation League has shifted gears from working with the tech giant in combating hate speech to helping lead a campaign to force change on the worlds largest social media platform.

The Stop Hate for Profit campaign was launched in mid-June by a number of U.S. civil rights groups. The effort, initiated following the killing of George Floyd, targets Facebooks $70 billion in annual ad revenues its main source of income to urge the company to commit to 10 recommended reforms for curbing hate speech.

And, while much of the campaign focuses on fighting the systemic issues highlighted by Floyds death, the ADLs long fight to get Holocaust denial off Facebook can be seen in the campaigns call to action.

The ADL, a Jewish organization founded in 1913 to combat antisemitism, partnered with Facebook (along with Google, Microsoft and Twitter) in 2017 to establish the Cyberhate Problem-Solving Lab to fight antisemitism and online hate.

But as the ADLs chief executive, Jonathan Greenblatt, told Haaretz, Facebook has consistently refused to categorize Holocaust denial as a violation of its terms of service, or Community Standards, which prohibit the use of its platform as a vehicle to demonize others or engage in hate speech.

The sentiment echos claims Greenblatt made in an open letter, where hewrote that while our partner organizations have been working with Facebook for years, the companys ongoing unwillingness to take action is inexcusable. The letter adds that in the ADLs experience with Mark Zuckerberg, weve learned that Facebook wont take this seriously unless forced hence the campaign.

'Factual error'

The ADLs literature on the subject points to Zuckerberg himself as to why Facebook has never explicitly categorized Holocaust denial as hate speech. The organization highlights a 2018 interview in which Zuckerberg said he finds Holocaust denial deeply offensive, but Facebook views it as a factual error not necessarily antisemitism or hate speech.

I dont believe that our platform should take that down because I think there are things that different people get wrong, Zuckerberg, who is Jewish, said at the time. I dont think that theyre intentionally getting it wrong.

But even though the new effort is gaining steam with over a thousand companies joining, Facebooks stock actually set records in July, and Zuckerberg has stuck to his position. Were not gonna change our policies or approach on anything because of a threat to a small percent of our revenue, or to any percent of our revenue, he said, the tech news site The Information reported.

Facebook did not respond to requests for comment.

As Aryeh Tuchman, associate director at the ADLs Center on Extremism, puts it, Holocaust denial is an antisemitic conspiracy theory which is founded on the belief that a global Jewish effort existed and continues to exist! to scam the whole world.

He adds: Seen in this light, it doesnt matter whether a person who promotes Holocaust denial is doing so out of malice or out of error; the bottom line is that they are promoting the greatest antisemitic conspiracy theory since 'The Protocols of the Elders of Zion.'

As part of the pressure campaign on Facebook, the ADL has also documented how hate speech on the platform has appeared alongside major companies ads.

For example, the ADL noted an image of U.S. Rep. Ilhan Omar transcribed onto an Aunt Jemima maple syrup bottle, her photo placed over the fictitious label Aunt Jihadi. In another example, an ad from the auto insurance company Geico appeared alongside an antisemitic post from a George Soros-focused group of more than 3,000 users, accusing the billionaire philanthropist of funding Black civil rights efforts in order to break down the world order.

The ADL says companies thus might want to pull their ads until hate speech is curbed on the platform.

'Facebook's indifference'

The ADL has long chronicled Holocaust denial on Facebook and notes that a review clearly found explicit denial, as well as the hate-filled and conspiratorial antisemitism common to this philosophy.

A spokesperson for Stop Hate For Profit told Haaretz in a statement how the ADLs expertise in this area has added to the campaign, saying, the ADL has been a critical partner.

Theyve brought incredible resources and expertise to bear, particularly in regards to the antisemitism and Holocaust denial thats rampant on Facebook. What makes this coalition powerful is how it pulls from every corner of American civil society that has been impacted by Facebooks indifference to profiting from hate.

Tuchman also notes the difficulties in researching and quantifying Holocaust denial on the platform, pointing out that unlike Twitter, Facebook is a closed system that doesnt allow for data trends to be easily collected and analyzed.

Tuchman says his team searched for Facebook Groups with titles which suggested that Holocaust denial might be present, and then delved into their contents.

On its website, the ADL lists several Facebook groups dedicated to Holocaust denial and names individuals linked to white supremacy and neo-Nazism who moderate or periodically post in those groups.

This research covers pages that are visible to the public, private groups where you must be approved as a member, and individual Facebook accounts. Tuchman notes that his team has found a thriving ecosystem of Holocaust denial in those groups. Looking at the personal pages of some of the participants we saw that they were also posting Holocaust denial content outside the groups.

Greenblatt adds that as a result of Facebooks refusal to categorize Holocaust denial as a form of antisemitic hate speech, this rhetoric appears across the platform, including in both public and private groups specifically devoted to the topic.

Indias elderly need policy resolve for a better senior care ecosystem; heres what needs to be done – The Financial Express

In recent years, Indias demographic dividend has grabbed much international attention for its ability to drive economic growth and supply low-cost labour to the rest of the world. While this sounds promising and could attract global investors to the country, a major point that seems to be missing from the current discourse is the rapidly growing senior population. The United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA), in its recent India Ageing Report, projected that the elderly population in the country would grow to 158million by 2025. A major reason for the steady growth of the elderly population has been the dramatic rise in life expectancy aided by sustained periods of economic growth and enhanced access to healthcare facilities a trend that is expected to continue for the next few decades. Further, estimates suggest that by the end of this century, seniors will constitute 34 percent of Indias population.

Proactive and early recognition of population ageing concerns at the policy level both in terms of demographic challenges and the quality of life for seniors will significantly pave the way for better senior-friendly infrastructures, healthcare facilities, and senior care services in India.

Demographic shifts and the crucial role of policy interventions

India has been watchful of its rising number of senior citizens and their specific requirements. As a result, in 1999, India, two years ahead of the Madrid International Plan of Action (MIPAA), introduced the National Policy on Older Persons (NPOP) offering state support for the well-being of senior citizens. Subsequently, in 2007, the Maintenance and Welfare of Parents and Senior Citizens Act was passed to provide more effective provisions for seniors. And most recently, the Government of India released theDraft National Policy for seniors to support the ageing population with specific, tailor-made interventions to create a vibrant senior care industry ecosystem.

Indias proactive policy initiatives not only demonstrate its strong resolve to ensure the well-being of the elderly population but also set the stage for more definitive and comprehensive policy measures to usher in a phase of policy-enabled growth for the senior care space in the country.

Draft National Policy for Senior Citizens 2020: A step in the right direction

As a fledgeling yet high potential sector, senior care requires sustained government support and a close collaboration among individuals, families, communities, institutions of civil society, and the private sector in converting the policy intent into action for high quality outcomes for seniors. The draft policy clearly reflects its understanding ofthe evolving needs of seniors and promises to revamp and standardize the existing policy framework to ensure better efficiency and functional relevance. As a result, the draft policy identifies the following as key intervention areas and proposes relevant recommendations to provide the necessary support to senior citizens.

Increased focus on financial security for seniors The draft policy adequately emphasizes the significance of financial security for seniors and recommends it as a key area of intervention as more than two-thirds of the elderly population continue to live below the poverty line in India. Old age pension schemes constitute a major source of income for seniors. However, the draft policy recognizesthat the existing pension payouts are not enough to ensure income security for seniors and therefore, seeks to revise it from time to time, keeping in mind the changing lifestyles, increasing healthcare costs, and inflation.

Additionally, the focus on senior-friendly tax structures, promotion of reverse mortgage schemes, creation of second career options for seniors, and the introduction of integrated insurance products will provide multiple income options to seniors to help them embrace a lifestyle of their choice.

Improved Access to Healthcare facilities India ranked 71 on the Age Watch Index published in 2015. The index covered 91 percent of the worlds senior population from 96 countries. One of the four elements that the index considered was health status. Majority of the healthcare services in India are not designed keeping in mind the evolving needs of senior citizens. As a result, access to affordable and senior-specific healthcare continues to remain a major challenge for them even today.

The draft policy seeks to address these concerns and promises to promote affordable and accessible healthcare for seniors with a focus on public health services, health insurance, tax incentives, and subsidies. Further, services such as preventive care, rehabilitative services, and geriatric care facilities will be prioritized to support healthy ageing for all seniors and to address age-related ailments.

Besides, the streamlining and promotion of existing healthcare schemes such as the National Programme for Health Care of the Elderly (NPHCE), Rashtriya Swasthya Bima Yojana (RSBY), and Ayushman Bharat will help in providing affordable and accessible healthcare services to seniors.

Promoting senior care products and services The draft policy also places due importance on promoting and supporting senior care products and services to meet the increasing demand for specialized senior care services. Private sector participation, in this regard, will be key, especially in designing world-class products and services for seniors in India. Therefore, a high focus needs to be placed on incentivizing individuals and organizations engaged in services such as assisted living, residences for seniors, memory care homes, elderly therapy, medicines, nutritional supplements, assistive devices, and special care products. Further, the proposed plan to provide organizations in the senior care space with easy access to liquidity and low-cost funding will ensure timely completion of senior living projects and facilities.

Incentives and policy support at the right level will not only make these products and services accessible but also attract foreign funds to India, including patient capital from pension funds. Increased investment will create a competitive environment and would provide prospective customers with multiple options to access services at affordable rates.

Encouraging adoption and workforce training Senior Care services, especially senior living facilities and assisted care services, are yet to find popular adoption in India. It is still at a nascent stage and would require awareness building both by the Government and private sector players to encourageadoption and acceptance. The draft policy recognizes this as a critical need to deal with the social stigma associated with senior care services in India and build a positive perception among people.

At the same time, the focus will also be required to identify and build the necessary skill sets to meet the specialized service requirements of the senior population. The draft policy has recognized the need for organizing training and orientation programs for individuals or organizations engaged in providing services to seniors. Besides, senior living facilities/care homes for the elderly will require certified caregivers to provide specialized care to the residents. This will further ensure availability of high qualityservices in the senior care space.

In short, it is a noteworthy step to have brought out the Draft Policy for Senior Citizens now after a hiatus of almost a decade, with clearly defined priority areas for Government intervention and private sector participation. However, despite the strong intent and the support promised, the draft policy document may still need to shed more light on the specific details and the long-term vision required for nurturing and building a robust senior care space in the country through committed action and timely implementation.

Local news ecosystem is taking root in Northeast Ohio – Crain’s Cleveland Business

They're being called "local news ecosystems," and one is building in Northeast Ohio.

It's what philanthropies, civic activists and entrepreneurial journalists across the country see as the sprouting of mostly young and fragile organizations that are trying to bring news and information, usually online, to overlooked neighborhoods and communities. Many share content to spread their stories further, with a focus on bolstering, if not directly competing, with the work of struggling traditional print and broadcast media.

Northeast Ohio has already spawned several news operations, including the Observer group of community newspapers serving Lakewood and several other Cuyahoga County communities, and The Devil Strip in Akron.

One of the latest, and maybe the most ambitious, is The Land, which just launched its website. As planned, The Land would "deliver in-depth stories that foster accountability, inform the community and inspire people to take action," according to the crowdfunding proposal prepared by founder and editor Lee Chilcote and publisher Tammie Wise, both formerly associated with Freshwater Cleveland, a for-profit digital magazine owned by Detroit-based Issue Media Group.

The Land plans to cover all of Cleveland's neighborhoods and the city's inner ring of suburbs, eventually building a staff of six reporters to cover government, development, environment, education, health care and civic engagement.

"There's been a tremendous amount of growth in the nonprofit news sector in recent years," Chilcote said. "The nonprofit model will allow us a lot of ability to serve the community, have some earned income but have memberships and grants to fulfill our mission."

Chilcote said he and Wise were motivated by what they see as a "news crisis" in Northeast Ohio as traditional news organizations, particularly The Plain Dealer, have made significant cuts in news coverage.

This is not a Northeast Ohio phenomenon. Across the country, the decline or demise of newspapers has created so-called "news deserts" in many communities. At the same time, foundations and other philanthropies are beginning to see that local news is critical to maintaining healthy communities, especially in lower-income parts of cities.

Last year, the Cleveland and Knight foundations commissioned a study, "Northeast Ohio's Local News and Information Ecosystem," by two North Carolina consultants that was aimed at civic leaders. One of its key conclusions: "Whatever your primary issue of concern, your second issue should be media." It argued that local news engages citizens, improves public decision-making and makes political and civic leaders accountable to their communities. It also makes contributions to public health and political participation.

When participants in six focus groups were asked to talk about issues they were facing and how they stayed informed, they were critical of the existing media landscape. Said one participant: "I can find out where the trash is, or (about) an event over here. But what's really, really happening policy-wise coming from city hall, coming from my school board and that sort of thing? People are not really getting good quality information."

The study also found that the number of news gatherers in Cleveland was down 61% between 2004 and 2019. In Akron, that figure was down 54%.

Michael Murphy, chief marketing officer of the Cleveland Foundation, said that funding parts of the ecosystem makes sense to his and other organizations in the community. In December, the Cleveland Foundation and the Akron Community Foundation, the Center for Community Solutions, the George Gund Foundation and the Knight Foundation announced more than $110,000 in journalism grants to address community information needs in Akron and Cleveland.

"As a coalition of funders, we are starting to see news and information as the critical part of any community infrastructure," Murphy said. "If you don't have a healthy news and information ecosystem, you can't have a community that's thriving. Citizens need to be informed."

The Cleveland Foundation, for example, has funded a project on food insecurity in Cleveland developed by Black Girl Media, a blog and podcast collective; Edible Cleveland, a print and online magazine; and WOVU, a community radio station created by Burten, Bell, Carr Development Inc., the nonprofit community development corporation serving Cleveland's Central and Kinsman neighborhoods.

It also is sponsoring a one-year pilot of a program through Neighborhood Connections, a Cleveland nonprofit that boosts Cleveland neighborhoods, to pay Greater Clevelanders to document official committee meetings of Cuyahoga County and City of Cleveland governments. The program, Documenters.org, was created in Chicago by City Bureau, a nonprofit civic journalism lab.

"Residents in Cleveland, especially, felt that they don't feel represented at editorial meetings, that there is not someone that looks like them who is making decisions. There is a strong, strong sense of distrust," Murphy said. "They feel that even when there are stories of hope in their neighborhood, the traditional media rely on antiquated B-roll, or antiquated images, to even tell a story of good news."

One of the oldest parts of the building Northeast Ohio news ecosystem is the Observer group, a loosely connected group of for-profit and nonprofit news organizations started more than a decade ago as print monthlies or biweeklies that are considered "hyperlocal" because they focus on a single community, or closely linked communities. They cover schools heavily but also housing, libraries and city councils. Seven Observers, each separately owned, cover communities from Westlake and Parma to Collinwood and Euclid.

Bob Rosenbaum, advertising director of the Heights Observer, which covers Cleveland Heights and University Heights, said the Observers started as print publications and continue to have a strong print presence because its revenue comes from local advertisers who don't need or can't afford to reach the kind of audience that larger media reach.

"We're now in our 11th year, and we've been making it on advertising revenue almost exclusively. Ninety percent of our revenue is advertising," he said. "We've largely had year-on-year growth until this year. This year, everything is blown to the wind."

Rosenbaum said his organization does attract some foundation funding for specific projects, and it is a member, along with some of the other Observers, of the Neighborhood & Community Media Association of Greater Cleveland. That association's website posts stories from its 14 members, including the Plain Press, which covers Cleveland's West Side neighborhoods, and the Real Deal Press, which covers "the interplay of race, class and power in the civic, business and cultural spaces of Northeast Ohio."

The Devil Strip, a 5-year-old online and print news co-op in Akron that believes media are a city's "chief storyteller," sees its role as being an advocate for the city.

"I think the way we fit into the local news ecosystem is filling gaps that we see," said editor Chris Horne. "We're looking at more narrative, long-term, slow journalism. Part of it is, we don't have the ability to do the daily stuff."

Those gaps include looking at local arts, music, entrepreneurship and community leadership, and celebrating the people who make Akron a unique place as well as exploring the challenges that hold it back.

Horne said Devil Strip is getting 30,000 unique visitors a month. Before the pandemic hit, much of Devil Strip's revenue came from advertising. But it also is in the middle of a two-year, $200,000 grant from the Knight Foundation, and it has won a $50,000 grant from the GAR Foundation.

News organizations like these are cropping up all over the country. The Institute for Nonprofit News, a Los Angeles organization that is a hub where members can share best practices, pool resources and collaborate on stories, has more than 250 members including The Devil Strip and Belt magazine in Northeast Ohio.

How to Choose Foods That Are Good for the Planet, Animals & You – The Beet

Sophie Egan understands that there is an astounding amount of confusion over what to eat. If you care about the planet, animals, human health and supporting companies that give back to their communities, you are a "conscious eater" and she has written the book for you. Her new book: How to Be a Conscious Eater: Making Food Choices for You, Others, and the Planet, helps guide you through the confusing aisles of the supermarket to hone in on the right choices to put your money where your heart is.

Using three criteriaIs it good for me? Is it good for others? Is it good for the planet?Sophie Egan helps readers make the right decisions based on research andinformation instead ofmarketing hype.

Author of the book: Devoured, How What We Eat Defines Us, Egan is an expert on foods impact on human and environmental health. Conscious Eaterdivides food into four categoriesstuff that comes from the ground, stuff that comes from animals, stuff that comes from factories, and stuff thats made in restaurants to help consumers decide what's important to them and how to put their consumer dollars to work backing those values.

SE: There's so much misinformation that there has been a loss of food literacy. People don't trust their instincts about what to eat. I wanted to empower people to make food choices they can feel good about. There'sinformation overload and misinformation.

So I made sure not to overwhelm the reader. The format offers breaks it down into these short and sweet bottom-line answers of what to eat.

SE: I found myself realizing:It's not enough to think is this good for you, but also is this good for the climate. So I wanted us to think about good for you and good for others, including other people and also the animals in the journey from farm to fork. And is it good for the planet?

SE: Right, So it helps to broaden the lenses and add an aperture. I wanted this book to broaden it so the mental checklist, People wonder: If I get this food, is it worth this? The way I look at it conscious eating is about getting clear on what your values are and shopping those. You first need to decide what you want to support with your grocerydollars.

SE: It provides a variety of tools including telling you a product's water footprint comparison, carbon footprint comparison, and of course these topics are complex, but you canmake consumers aware of the cost of their food. They can then ask themselves: "What are the things I care the most about?" If you care the most about carbon footprint or animal rights. Often they are in alignment. The carbon and water footprints: The worst for the planet and for animals is cow milk. But then when you go to buy plant-based milk, you also want to look for flavor and sourcing footprint, because of course almonds require a lot more water than oats.

SE: Plant forward and mostly plant-based foods can be more sustainable than strictly plant-based. But then human health is also a factor and plant-based is healthier. We can only hold so much complexity in our heads at once. If you eat mostly whole foods and mostly foods from the ground, that can check a lot of boxes. Across the board that may be best in all categories.

SE: These third-party certifications, like the certified "organic" label, a lot of time they are referees of the transparency game. They help tick through the checklist we would not be able to even know about.

SE: There are important stickers to know, that have real meaning that helps you align with your values. USDA Organic is arguably one of the most rigorous standards of how food is grown. It supports an eco system and farm workers health and supports

USDA Organic Inhibits synthetic peticides and growth hormones and antibiotics. From an environmental standpoint that is significant.

But a lot of them are not standardized. Something can say "natural" and mean little. But "organic" does ensure that it is chemical-free when harvested. But that doesn't mean they can't add preservatives and more chemicals after it's harvested. A processed food product with the label USDA Organic just means that 95 percent of the sources are organic.

But in terms of the organic label, there is still the halo effect. Organic chocolate frosting is still organic chocolate frosting. So for health, you're getting a load of added sugar.

SE: The label Fair Trade is also meaningful.Fair for Life or Fair Trade Certified. These are truly meaningful for farm workers and harvesters. It ensures that no discrimination or harassment is taking place, no forced labor or child labor either. This has become a shocking problem for Cocoa production. In Africa, South America, the Ivory Coast and other places. Those certainly are not the only place. Fair Trademeans that it's monitored.Part of theprice of that item gets fed into local funds for infrastructure and jobs where the product or ingredients originated.

Where these certifications differ from one another, is how far along the spectrum they ensure a liveable wage for workers, versus a fair wage or a minimum wage. Fair for Life is the strongest. Look for that on bananas, coffee, chocolate, since those are three common ones.

The Beet: Sometimes I look for the frog, from the Rainforest Alliance

SE: that is a good one, as is Bird-Friendly from the Smithsonian. This is specifically for coffee. It means that when coffee is grown in the tropics, it signals the homes of migratory birds are respected. And it ensures the coffee is grown in shade. So no trees needed to be cut down which takes away bird habitats. The less we disturb nature for farming the better.

Of all the crops grown worldwide, only about 1 percent are organic, which is shocking. For all the perceived consumer interest, "organic" only accounts for 1 percent of all growing.

There's a lot of different variables. It can take three years or more to transition to organic soil. But the other thing is that some farmers think the term organic does not even go far enough.

One term is Biodynamic from Demeter International Organization. They have certified "Biodynamic" which means at least 10 percent of the farmer's land is off-limits to growing, so it encourages biodiversity.

Another term to watch is "Regenerative." This is a big one. That's basically going to replace what we're doing now. Some people think we're going to skip straight to this "Regenerative" This is about soil and growing practicesand it's a way of growing that integrates with the surrounding ecosystemfor more biodiversity and more natural growing practices.

Biodynamic also promotes water conservation and treats wetlands grasslands and forests as part of the farm ecosystemso the farm is part of a larger ecosystem and natural landscape.

Farmers and ranchers have roles to play in being climate super heros. Improiving soil health and capturing carbon and creating best practices. This is something we need to encourage.

The "Regenerative" growing practice leaves the soil better than they found it. It depends on all the methods coming together to create a healthier earth. Some crops do this already. One that is really known for that is lentils. They are nitrogen fixers. Environmental super crops.

SE: It's not the case the shorter the distance, the better. The analysis includes the assessment of the total environmental footprint of a crop, and how people are treated in harvesting and packaging the food. Soall the methodstogether might be more important.

Transportation is just a fraction of the decision. Of course, farm to table is great. But there is nuance. Personally, when I am considering what to buy, my personal guidance is to better understand the methods andlook at transportation within that context.
