Dr. Helen Lavretsky, Professor of Psychiatry, Semel Institute, UCLA Kirtan Kirya in Stressed Family Dementia Caregivers Effects on mental health, cognition, telomerase, gene expression, and brain metabolism. A randomized pilot study of Yogic Kirtan Kriya compared to a relaxation practice examined the potential of daily brief Meditation practice to improve mental health, coping, cognition, brain metabolism on PET imaging, and the activity of immune cell telomerase activity and change in gene expression in stressed family dementia caregivers. The study found that daily Kirtan Kriya practice can lead to reduced stress, improved coping, and cognitive function compared to relaxation. The details of the study and its results will be presented.

Some of my songs have a story to them. #39;Ghor Jeno Hoy Shokkoler #39; is one of my most favourite songs, but I didn #39;t record it for any of my albums. I played it in a few concerts. But not in the last 8/9 years. I have made so many songs that I don #39;t remember them all. Meanwhile, dementia is taking its toll. A song is never just words or the text. In fact, the music attracts a normal individual more. But of course, the definition of #39;normal #39; can be at variance. The more I listen to the music that is being made and sold the more I doubt if individuals like yours faithfully have even a very small place here in this country or in this state. Going by what goes as #39;music #39; I wonder if I am alive or if I am just a ghost of someone who died many years ago along with people who were not tone-deaf. I have recorded this song for those few people who still care for a song - not just sheer words or the inane sounds made by musically illiterate and uneducated people. I have recorded it for those few who feel more and more cornered in matters of taste and who understand that #39;modernism #39; was not born yesterday but many years ago. KabirSuman.

Dog Entertains at Nursing Home
Comet, Welsh Terrier, does Therapy Dog visits. At a recent visit, she was asked to be the entertainment in a mild dementia unit following her regular one on one visits with the patients. This is a small part of the 30 minute program of little tricks, dances and other things she did to bring a smile to the patients. She also walks the entire room on hind legs, jumps in the air on command, backs up, takes a bow and approaches each patient with a paw extended.
