The cyborg next door

In the 1970s, America thrilled to the adventures of Steve Austin in The Six Million Dollar Man and Jaime Sommers in The Bionic Woman.

Well, thrilled might be overstating the case, but both shows Bionic Woman was a spin-off of Six Million Dollar Man had successful if brief runs on network television. As well, they and their precursor novel, Cyborg by Martin Caidin, introduced the popular culture to mechanically augmented humans.

Perhaps the most famous bionic person in the world today is sprinter and alleged murderer Oscar Pistorius, an amputee who made history by competing in the 2012 Olympic Games. Pistorius legs were amputated below the knees when he was an infant to address a congenital condition. He runs on carbon-fiber prostheses that have earned him the nickname Blade Runner.

There are many more people who have benefited from bionics, not least the thousands of war wounded the United States has produced over the last decade-plus. Strides in cybernetics eventually will allow amputees greater motor control over prostheses than theyve had in the past. An artificial hand may mimic a natural one, not because someone pressed a button to run a predetermined program, but because it is neurally linked to its user, who is willing it to do so.

Which brings us to fashion. How long will it be before elective cybernetic surgery is available?

There are few limits on what people are willing to do to modify their bodies, and Id wager there are more than a couple who would give up their perfectly functional legs to have them replaced with stronger prostheses. Among the early adopters, expect to see a crossover with people who are into plastic surgery and extreme piercing, tattooing and branding.

Also expect some wringing of hands over the moral correctness of such procedures. Theres an entire strain of science fiction dedicated to examining what it means to be human, as well as the potential conflicts between haves and have-nots, in a world of augmented beings.

University of Toronto professor Steve Mann has had a taste of this possible future. Mann last year claimed he was ejected from a McDonalds restaurant in Paris because the employees there were upset about the augmented-reality glasses he has permanently attached to his head. The glasses are capable of shooting photos and video, and the employees were allegedly angry that he might be recording the goings-on at the restaurant.

Mann contends that he was assaulted, while McDonalds, following an internal investigation, says its employees were not at fault. Media outlets described the incident as the first cybernetic hate crime. Since then, Google has announced a device similar to Manns EyeTap called Google Glass, which several establishments, including a Seattle bar and a Las Vegas strip club, have preemptively banned.

The end game here is cybernetic implants that arent obvious to the casual observer, whether they be contact lenses or entirely new eyeballs. The question is whether one will be able to afford the high-quality eyeballs or the less desirable, ad-supported eyeballs.

May Kids' Book Club Pick: 'Lunch Lady And The Cyborg Substitute'

She yanks on her elbow-length rubber gloves and snaps the string of her apron into a knot but this is no ordinary lunch lady. Not only does she serve food, she also serves justice.

The Lunch Lady in question is the star of NPR's Backseat Book Club's latest pick, The Lunch Lady and the Cyborg Substitute by Jarrett Krosoczka.

Like most cafeteria workers, she feeds breakfast and lunch each day to school children. But she also retreats to a Batman-like lair below the lunchroom. From there, she can monitor the whole school for suspicious characters like the Cyborg Substitute or the Video Game Villain. And like any good crime-fighter, she's loaded with cool gadgets like fish stick nunchucks, a spatu-copter, and a hairnet that catches the bad guys.

Yes, these are fun, fired-up graphic stories that kids consume like popcorn. But they like their author have a sneaky depth that parents and kids alike can appreciate.

Krosoczka brings both energy and tenderness to his writing. While today he can revel in the successes of the Lunch Lady series and his other books, his life had a rocky start. Krosoczka's dad wasn't in the picture and his mom was addicted to drugs and often incarcerated. But he was raised by his loving maternal grandparents, and in a recent TED talk, How a Boy Became an Artist, he described the impact his grandparents had on his life and paid tribute to all the adults who helped foster his creativity. You can see some of Jarrett's childhood artwork at his website.

We hope you'll read along with us starting with the first book, The Lunch Lady and the Cyborg Substitute and then keep reading through the rest of the series. We'd love for you to share your questions for Krosoczka with us. Also, tell us about the people who work in your school cafeteria! If you have a photo of you and staff members of your cafeteria, please have an adult help you send it to us at BackseatBookClub@npr.org.

May Kids' Book Club Pick: 'Lunch Lady And The Cyborg Substitute'

Cris Cyborg wins her Invicta debut, readies herself for championship fight at Invicta 6

Cristiane "Cyborg" Santos brought the pain in her Invicta Fighting Championships debut. After serving a yearlong steroid suspension, Santos mauled her bloodied opponent, Fiona Muxlow, who, to her credit, never gave up. Referee "Big" John McCarthy stopped Cyborg's relentless onslaught and awarded her a first-round TKO victory in 3:46.

The talk is still of the seemingly inevitable major matchup between Santos and UFC bantamweight champion Ronda Rousey. But next for Santos is Marloes Coenen for the featherweight championship at Invicta FC 6 in either June or July. "I feel terrified," Coenen joked at the post-fight press conference.

Invicta 5 was filled with GIF-worthy highlights: Rose Namajunas submitting Kathina Catron in 12 seconds with a flying armbar (submission of the night); Miriam Nakamoto knocking out Jessamyn Duke with a pair of knee strikes (KO of the night); "Rowdy" Bec Hyatt submitting rival Jasminka Cive with an armbar in 3:30; and Leslie Smith and the UFC's Sarah Kaufman slugging it out (fight of the night). Kaufman won a split decision.

Many in the crowd disagreed with the decision and booed. In the post-fight press conference, Smith angled for a rematch, possibly on a UFC card, saying that the world's biggest MMA organization shouldn't be too proud of having a fighter under contract (Kaufman) who won in such a manner.

The main event could easily have garnered fight-of-the-night honors. Challenger Michelle "The Karate Hottie" Waterson refused to give up when atomweight champion Jessica Penne locked on an armbar in the third round. Her escape led to a fourth round and Waterson locking on her own armbar for the submission, taking the title. Waterson collapsed in tears after finally getting Penne to tap.

Other highlights: Barb Honchak won the vacant 125-pound belt from Vanessa Porto in a technical fight that was definitely a comedown from the previous bouts. Julia Budd beat hometown favorite Mollie Estes by submission with a rear-naked choke in the third round. Jennifer Maia downed former Bellator champ Zoila Frausto Gurgel by unanimous decision.

Cris Cyborg's Invicta FC 5 Victory Sets Up Championship Rematch with Marloes Coenen

Im very happy to come back and I want to fight soon.

Cris Cyborg made that statement following a first-round TKO stoppage of Fiona Muxlow at Invicta FC 5 on Friday night. It was Cyborgs first bout in 16 months, marking her return from a yearlong suspension for testing positive for steroids following her last fight.

The victory not only marked her return to action, it also launched her into a title fight with Marloes Coenen for the Invicta FC featherweight championship, assuring Cyborg that she will indeed fight again soon.

The bout is expected to take place sometime in July, although Invicta FC president Shannon Knapp told MMAWeekly.com that they had not yet set a date for the fight.

Coenen and Cyborg are looking forward to the fight just the same. Its a rematch of their Jan. 30, 2010, Strikeforce bout, in which Cyborg won via TKO stoppage in the third round.

After my first fight with Cris I know this sounds stupid but I kind of underestimated her, said Coenen on Friday night. But I hate it when I lose. I really hate that and I always want to make up for my losses.

What I like about Cris is she is a true, true fighter, Coenen continued.

I like a challenge. I always said I wanted to do it at the end of my career, but if it came sooner, it came sooner.

The respect is mutual.

I am very pleased because after the fight I did with her and she lose, commented Cyborg, she say to me, I want to fight you again.

Cris Cyborg Wins Invicta FC Debut, Gets 145-Pound Title Shot vs. Marloes Coenen

Cristiane Santos is back in business, making a successful debut with the Kansas City-based all-female MMA promotion, Invicta Fighting Championships.

Earning an aggressive first-round technical knockout victory against Australian fighter Fiona Muxlow, "Cyborg" Santos gave no mercy as she pummeled her opponent from bell to bell over three minutes and 46 seconds.

With the victory, Cyborg secures herself a shot at becomingInvicta FC's first featherweight champion.

That match is planned to take place in a few months, as Cyborg will assumedly compete in a rematch against one-time Strikeforce foe Marloes Coenen, whom Cyborg defeated in January 2010 during her first title defense.

This marked Cyborg's first MMA bout since December 17, 2011, when she defeated Hiroko Yamanaka in a third consecutive successful defense of the Strikeforce Women's Featherweight Championship.

Unfortunately, the Brazilian's 11th straight win was overturned into a no-contest following apositive test for anabolic steroids, resulting in a year-long suspension.

Cyborg had recently been in talks to set up a superfight with UFC women's bantamweight star Ronda Rousey, but negotiations broke down when Cyborg (and her manager, Tito Ortiz) insisted that cutting down to 135 pounds was out of the question.Rousey also refused to move up to 140 pounds for a catchweight bout, prompting Cyborgto call her rival a "bitch"in a heated message over Instagram.

But unfortunately for Ortiz and Cyborg, even UFC president Dana White statedthat a fight at 140 pounds wouldn't make sense, with Rousey as the 135-pound champion and the UFC currently not hosting any other female weight classes:

It's not a title fight. If that's what [Cyborg] is willing to do is go to 140, let's let Ronda defend her title a few times and see if Ronda wants to go to 140. If I know Ronda, she probably would anyway, so let's see what happens. But if [Cyborg] wants to fight for a title and have a title fight, she has to go to 135 pounds.

A fight at 140 would be a fan fight because everybody wants to see it, but it's not one of those fights that makes sense.

Invicta FC 5 results: ‘ Cyborg ‘ Santos victorious in first fight in 16 months

In case you forgot what a Cristiane "Cyborg" Santos fight looked like, she didn't take long to refresh your memory.

The former Strikeforce women's featherweight champion returned to action for her first fight since Dec. 2011 on Friday night at Invicta FC 5.

Santos looked like the "Cyborg" of old as she unleashed the onslaught from the outset in a first-round technical knockout victory over Fiona Muxlow (6-3) at the Ameristar Casino in Kansas City. Only the overmatched Australian's toughness helped her hang on for several minutes though Santos' ruthless beatdown before referee "Big" John McCarthy called off the fight at 3:46 of the opening round.

With the victory, Santos (11-1, 1 no-contest) sets up a fight with Marloes Coenen to determine the inaugural Invicta featherweight championship.

"I want to come back, I want to fight soon. I am very excited to fight Marloes Coenen she is a very good fighter. I want to do a good fight in July, I hope everyone comes and watches."

Santos defeated Coenen in a 2010 Strikeforce fight.
