BOTTOM SHELF: 'Cyborg Soldier:' A Tale of Two Movies

Written by: Richard Pierce on January 28, 2010.

Way back in 1993, director Sam Firstenberg (American Ninja 1 & 2, American Samurai) decided to take a break from making movies with the word American in the title and do a Terminator style action/science-fiction flick.

The result was Cyborg Cop, starring David Bradley.

Bradley was famous for being the guy who replaced Michael Dudikoff in the popular, and amazingly awesome, American Ninja franchise, a series which Im sure well cover soon.

The following year, hot off Cyborg Cops success (a record seventeen rentals), a sequel came out, again starring David Bradley, called Cyborg Soldier.

Remember: it was 1994. Terminator 2 had just been an enormous success, so making your title Cyborg (Something) or Robo (Something) was an easy way to cash in.

Yo, dude. That movie T2 was totally radical. But have you heard of this new one, Cyborg Pool Cleaning Guy? Sounds tubular!

Cyborg Soldier opens with David Bradleys character, Jack Ryan (ironically the same name of the popular Tom Clancy character), taking out bad guy Starkraven, who is arrested and later turned into a cyborg by the government.

Starkraven escapes, changes his name to Spartacus and sets out with his army of cyborg soldiers (Aha! We have a title!) to destroy Jack.

David Bradley is a great martial artist and one of the better karate-guys-turned-actors of the era. He delivers a solid tough-guy performance, despite the fact that through half the movie, he is wearing a freaking fanny pack!

'Cyborg' headed to 135, plans to retire Ronda Rousey 'like I did Gina Carano'

Since UFC womens bantamweight champion Ronda Rousey apparently wont meet her at any other weight, Cristiane Justino said shes making the drop from 145 pounds to 135 in hopes for a December fight.

Cyborg made the announcement via a prepared statement on Fridays edition of Inside MMA on AXS TV.

The statement followed recent comments by UFC President Dana White that criticized Justino as a user of performance-enhancing drugs (she flunked a test in 2011 due to an anabolic steroid). However, Justino, Invicta FCs reigning featherweight titleholder, said she planned to add the organizations bantamweight strap to her collection before moving to 135 pounds and retiring Rousey like I did Gina Carano, who quit fighting in 2009 after a title loss to Cyborg.

In fact, Justino (12-1 MMA, 0-0 UFC) said shes open to a winner-takes-all bout or they can even fight for free. She simply implored Rousey (8-0 MMA, 2-0 UFC) to ask your daddy Dana to make it happen.

The full statement:

In reference to Rondas statement that I am looking for a payday so that I can retire, youre right, I am looking for a payday to retire you like I did Gina Carano. But to show its not only about money, I challenge you to a fight winner takes all. Or better yet lets fight for FREE. ANYTIME! ANYWHERE! Ask your daddy Dana to make it happen.

My English is not that great, so sorry if I was misunderstood. I didnt literally mean I would die if I made 135. What I meant was that my doctor recommended that I did not fight the rest of my career at 135, which is what the UFC wanted.

You have fought 154 in the Olympics and 145 in MMA. You can meet me at 140 easier than for me to go down to 135. The only reason you want the fight at 135 is because you feel that is your only chance because you hope the weight cut will affect me. You guys say Im irrelevant, yet watch my highlights. The true MMA fans not only know me, but know Im the best. Sad that you give the true MMA fans no recognition by saying that they dont matter.

Im currently training to fight at 145 on March 28 and in early May. My team has hired a medical doctor to help me make 135. I plan to challenge and win the Invicta 135 championship in the summer and challenge you, champion to champion, for your 135 belt in December.

Now I know critics will say I thought you said you would die if you made 135. All Im promising is that I will give 100 percent to try to get to 135 to make this plan happen. If I do, I will still listen to my doctors advice and fight no more than three times at 135: first to win the Invicta belt, the second time to kick your ass and the third time to kick your ass again so that the world can see it wasnt luck. You can even have me tested every week up to the fight. That way you will not have an excuse after I kick your ass.

Cyborg to Rousey: At 135 I Will 'Retire You Like I Did Gina Carano'

Could a women's superfight between the UFC's Ronda Rousey and Invicta FC's Cristiane Santos take place at 135 pounds before the end of the year?

According to "Cyborg," that's exactly what's going to happen. Check out what the Invicta women's featherweight champion said in a statement sent to AXS TV'sInside MMA:

Just over a year ago, Santos asked for her release from her Zuffa LLC contract, the parent company of the UFC which also owned the now defunct Strikeforce promotion until it folded last January, after she could not come to terms for a bout with Rousey, per MMA Weekly.

As recently as Monday, Both Rousey and UFC President Dana White expressed a serious disinterest in booking "Rowdy" against her Brazilian counterpart, though neither have ruled the fight out if it occurs at bantamweight, per Fox Sports.

In hopes of facilitating this potential big-money title fight, UFC Hall of Famer Tito Ortiz resigned as Cyborg's managershortlyafter once again getting called out by White.

White and Rousey have also been very critical of Santos' failed post-fight drug test in December 2011 for the anabolic steroid stanozolol, per MMA Junkie.

While critics have often accused Santos of using performance-enhancing drugs on a regular basis throughout her nearly nine-year career due to her blistering knockout power and muscular physique, this was the only instance of her failing a drug test.

Cyborg is expected to defend her belt next month against either Ediane Gomez or Julianna Budd, while Rousey puts her strap on the line against Sara McMann Saturday evening in the main event of UFC 170.

Cris Cyborg plans to drop to 135 pounds, 'retire' Ronda Rousey by end of year

Guilherme Cruz, MMA Fighting

Before Ronda Rousey enters the Octagon on Saturday night, her rival Cris Cyborg had some strong words for the UFC women's bantamweight champion. In a prepared statement to 'Inside MMA' on Friday, Cyborg vowed to defeat her by the end of the year.

Cris Cyborg expects to fight Julia Budd or Ediane Gomes next at Invicta FC

Cris Cyborg returns to fighting in March, but it wont be for Invicta Fighting Championships.

Cyborg, who demolished previously unbeaten Jennifer Colomb under muay thai rules at Lion Fight 11 in Las Vegas, Nevada, last September, is set to compete for the inaugural Lion Fight welterweight championship on March 28 against Jorina Baars.

Lion Fight 14 takes place at the Hard Rock Hotel and Casino in Las Vegas and will be headlined by Gregory Choplin vs. Marco Pique.

"I hope I can do a great fight and show my muay thai skills," Cyborg told MMAFighting.com about her next muay thai contest. "The win is the consequence."

Like Cyborg, Baars also competes in MMA, but shes not as successful as the Brazilian. Baars is 1-3 in MMA, but Cyborg doesnt expect an easy win.

"Its really interesting that were both muay thai and MMA fighters," she said. "Jorina is a veteran, but Ill be ready for a war. I like challenges that makes me evolve as an athlete. I believe shes more experienced than my first opponent."

Cyborg has no date set to return to MMA, but expects to be part of Invicta FCs next card.

"Im still waiting, but Ill definitely defend my title in the next edition," she said. "They are talking about two girls (to fight me), Julia Budd and Ediane Gomes."

Budd and Gomes are both undefeated under the Invicta FC banner. While she has no opponent set for her return, Cyborg keeps competing in other sports, and she doesnt rule out leaving MMA if she has more opportunities out there.

"I will compete wherever I have opportunities," she said. "If it happens that I only fight muay thai, why not? But for now Ill keep competing in jiu-jitsu, muay thai and wrestling to work on my game to fight MMA."
