Workington Comets slip to 51-39 loss at in-form Sheffield – News & Star

Sheffield Tigers 51 Workington Comets 39

Workington Comets failed to tame the Tigers as they went down 51-39 at Owlerton to leave Sheffield empty-handed.

Comets almost got off to a dream start as Craig Cook and Mason Campton gated on a 5-1, only for Josh Grajczonek and Todd Kurtz to drive up the inside of the captain to share the points.

Tigers debutant Jan Graversen won heat two with ease ahead of the visitors guest Tom Perry, while Rob Shuttleworth was last behind Georgie Wood, another making his first appearance for the hosts.

It was the home side who gated on a 5-1 in heat three and Ty Proctor seemed too eager to impress on his old track, wiping out Ryan Douglas and being excluded as the race was awarded to put Sheffield six points up.

Heat four had to be rerun after Thomas Jorgensen and Lasse Bjerre made a mess of the tapes before the Tigers made it 16-8 with a 4-2 thanks to Bjerre and Wood as Jorgensen let the lead slip.

Comets seemed to wake up in heat five as Cook and Campton combined for a 5-1 to halve the deficit, only for Grajczonek to rocket round in front of Jorgensen and Kurtz to stretch it back to six points.

Proctor had no problems impressing in heat six as he led from gate to flag, but Bjerre and Graversen chased for a draw, then Campton continued his fine form with a superb win in heat seven, closely followed by Perry for yet another away 5-1.

Jorgensen got in on the act by beating former Workington No.1 Grajczonek in heat eight, but Shuttleworth was last so the Tigers held on.

A 5-1 for the home side threatened to drain Comets momentum in heat nine, Grajczonek and Kurtz making light work of Matt Williamson and Proctor.

Bjerre got the better of Cook and Campton to make it 36-30 after 11 heats, before Douglas gave Comets an opening as he crashed out and was excluded in heat 12.

Proctor capitalised the win but Graversen got his nose ahead of Perry for a Comets 4-2 to make things interesting with three heats left.

The usually dependable Cook continued to have something of an off night by his own high standards, trailing Grajczonek while Bjerre beat Jorgensen to put the home side six points up with two heats to go and leave Comets hopes of a point in trouble.

Those chances looked very slim after the Tigers secured a 4-2 in heat 14, with Williamson splitting Douglas and Graversen, and the hosts condemned Comets to a long journey home disappointed with a 5-1 in the final heat.

Comets co-promoter Steve Whitehead, who was team manager for the night, said he was disappointed with the result but not the performance.

He said: "Sheffield Tigers were relieved.

"I'm not taking anything away from them, they're a good side.

"Craig Cook was pretty poorly so that didn't help us and to even score seven points was good.

"He'd probably have scored 13 fully fit and that would have made it something like 46-44.

"Mason Campton was the star and a few people might wonder why I didn't put him in heat 15 but when we got the three lads together Ty and Thomas were keen and Mason thought maybe it was best to go with the heat-leaders."

STATE SOFTBALL: Comets fall short in State Semifinal – Mason City Globe Gazette

FORT DODGE | For two hours the Charles City Comets fought, but would fall short to the Ballard Bombers, 5-1.

From the scoreboard, its hard to tell, but the game they left behind Thursday was a tough one as the Bombers would capitalize on their short game to scatter the defense.

At the top of the first, Ballard freshman Skylar Rigbys walk put a runner on base at the top of the order. Following two fly-outs, Rigby stood at second when freshman Isabel Hobbs was up to bat. Sophomore Samantha Heyer fired another pitch, missing junior catcher Ciana Sonbergs glove. Rigby was in full sprint, as she rounded third Charles City junior Tayler Schmidt stood inside the foul line. Rigby pushed Schmidt down with her arms in full extension. Schmidt collapsed to the ground as Rigby scored the first run 1-0.

I just saw her in my base path and knew I had an opportunity to score, Rigby said. I knew I had to get it done for my teammates.

That was just the start of it. Heyer struggled to connect with Sonberg at the circle as wild pitches and passed balls would add to the score.

The second inning lasted 30 minutes as the Charles City defense struggled to find a rhythm. Following sophomore Karlee Ahrenholtzs strikeout, Hannah Elliott lit the bat with a chopper to left. Bella Johnson followed suit with a short single to right. Elliott stole second and advanced to third on Johnsons single, then scored on a passed ball, 2-0.

Jenna Moodys bunt tricked the infield, allowing her to reach second on error and Johnson to run home, 3-0. The Comets shifted their defense a few steps closer to the infield.

Theyre a really good bunting team, Comet head coach Brian Bohlen said. Some of them were really outstanding bunts that most teams arent going to field. They just put the ball where we couldnt get to it and thats just testament to how good of a team they are.

Moody didnt stay on base long, scoring on a wild pitch for a 4-0 score. Abby Carlin drew a walk to load the bases and Rigby would run home on a wild pitch, 5-0.

The Comets only score would come from a solo home run by senior Sara Martin in the bottom of the second, giving the crowd hopes of a comeback. But the Comets would amass five hits to the Bombers nine, leaving runners stranded in scoring positions in the following innings.

As the game neared the two-hour mark, Ballard scored one more time on a wild pitch in the bottom of the sixth to make it 6-1.

Heyer finished with six strikeouts, four walks and five earned runs, but she stood tall as she exited the field.

I made some mistakes that were crucial, but were going to fight for third place tomorrow, Heyer said. Its amazing that we can possibly be one of the top four teams in the state, and thats such an honor even if we arent in the championship game. That also leaves goals for next year, too.

The Comets will take on Oskaloosa at 9:30 a.m. Friday for third place in Class 4A.

Workington Comets legend Carl Stonehewer set to speak about career in West Cumbria – News & Star

Stonehewer affectionately known as Stoney to fans will be in Workington on August 25 for a sportsmans evening at The Waverley Hotel.

Stoney almost stole the show when he took to the stage with speedway commentators Nigel Pearson and Kelvin Tatum at a talk-in at Derwent Park in March.

Stonehewer, who now works as a HGV driver, won the Premier League Riders Championship in 2000 and 2001 in Comets colours, secured the Fours and Pairs titles multiple times and clinched the Young Shield in 2008.

He was also the first Premier League rider to qualify for the Grand Prix series.

After announcing his retirement in early 2006 following a horror accident, Stonehewer returned to Comets in 2007.

He eventually retired in 2010 after a spell with Redcar.

The 45-year-old had fallen out of love with the sport until he started teaching his son Beau to tide at Northside speedway training track last summer.

Since then he has been seen regularly at Comets meetings.

The event will be limited to 130 tickets at 10 each and will include a buffet, raffles and auctions.

Comets light up Barrow Celtic with new chapter in women’s football – NW Evening Mail

BARROW Celtic Comets are on the lookout for new recruits to bolster their ranks ahead of an exciting new chapter in the clubs history.

The Comets begin life in the Lancashire FA County League in September and are looking to add experience to their talented but youthful ranks.

Celtic manager Kevin Crickett has been working with the same group of girls from junior level, and that squad are now graduating from under-16s to open-age football.

Crickett is hoping to attract some senior players so they have a good blend of youth and experience.

Its about getting lasses carrying on playing football, said Crickett, whose side will come up against the likes of Bolton Wanderers, Burnley and Wigan Athletic.

Since we started the under-10s, weve had a group of girls who have stuck together to play football in the same team through the years, with the added bonus of other girls joining last years under-16s squad.

Now we want to bring another 10 or 12 older players into the squad, alongside the 12 lasses who are carrying on, so we can have a mixed squad of different age groups.

This year we will be playing a higher standard of football in the Lancashire Womens League so there will be a lot of games against higher-standard teams.

We are playing for the experience and with confidence and commitment hopefully we will a few games.

The main thing is enjoying the football and learning and progressing to a higher standard.

Celtic started their pre-season preparations recently with a match between the Comets and their dads at Ormsgill.

Anyone wanting to join the Celtic ranks, training sessions for over-16s take place on Fridays between 5.45pm and 7pm. The Lancashire FA County League starts on September 10.

Lady Comets ‘getting up to speed’ on pitch – Journal-Times

You see the slogan on many U.S. Marine Corps recruiting posters: Adapt, Improvise, Overcome.

Of course, nobody's equating the Marines' mission with West Carter's girls soccer team's 2017 goals, but the three-word phrase still applies to the Lady Comets they have to adjust after losing 10 seniors, including leading scorer Samantha Duvall and her 23 goals and 13 assists.

What's more, second-year coach William Logan has fewer players with whom to work he says 17 or 18 are expected this year, compared with last year's 28 at the beginning of the season. (Injuries ultimately reduced that number to 24.)

We're rebuilding at defense, midfield, forward and the keeper, third-year coach William Logan says. We've been doing a lot of conditioning, getting up to speed and maintaining.

The Lady Comets are steadily improving. Last year's team was 11-12, up from 2015's 8-13-2.

West Carter had never been to a summer team camp, but Logan took the Lady Comets for a 212-mile round trip ride to Asbury University in Wilmore for some workouts with coach Brooke Lincoln.

We worked mostly on transitioning to make everyone involved, Logan said. We're working more on crossing (passes) and finishing with the younger ones and more on ball skills.

Though Duvall is gone, the Lady Comets are not bereft of scoring. Junior forward Addison Burchett scored 19 times last year and dished five assists.

She handles the ball well, Logan says. She has a good strike. She works on ball skills, dribble and make turns and make space behind the defense.

Logan says seniors Katie Wolfe and Taylor Hicks should join Burchett on the front line. Katie Wolfe started as a sophomore, so she's coming into her third year, Logan says.

There's also a sisterly connection; sophomore Hadley Burchett is a midfielder. Sophomore Taylar Middleton and Megan Perry are the potential midfield starters.

I want (Middleton) to make space and pull the defense over a little more, Logan said.

Freshman Riley Madden and sophomore Hallie Steagall are the goalkeepers. Steagall allowed 23 goals and compiled a 1.6 goals-against average last season.

The keepers have learned to be more active, Logan says.

So, how does Logan define a successful season? Winning the 62nd District for the first time would be nice.

For me, it's the girls learning more about the game a little bit more, he says. We do like to get wins also.

Comets players are now free agents – The Blue Testament

News about the Kansas City Comets has been limited and rare since the end of last season. With a legal struggle between owners dominating what little information was made available the last few months fans have been worried about their team.

The press release the MASL sent out Tuesday did not help calm the fears that the Comets may not be back in the fall.

The Major Arena Soccer League (MASL) is actively seeking a new ownership group for the Kansas City market. In conjunction with the current operating group, the MASL is working to find the best fit within the league and the community for the market.

Through the process, the league also seeks to act in the best interest of the players. Therefore, the players who were under contract with the previous ownership group as of July 18, 2017 at 8:00 p.m. ET, will now be free to negotiate new contracts when new ownership is established, or with any other team in the MASL.

The league will continue to pursue a strong ownership group to operate the Kansas City Comets for the 2017-2018 MASL season.

As of Tuesday, the players under contract to the Comets became free agents and can negotiate with other teams.

On the positive side the league does state they are working with the current operating group to find a strong ownership for Kansas City and the players can negotiate with the new ownership group.

The question is how many of the Comets can wait until a new ownership group is formed. Most of the players for the Comets have strong local ties. A number of them went to school locally and coach with local clubs, have second jobs and local charities and would find it difficult to move to another city.

While the press release sounds at least somewhat positive that a new ownership group will be formed, the longer it takes the harder it will be to field a team. They will be further and further behind the curve in getting players/coaches under contract, tickets sold and everything else that goes into putting a team on the field.

Aces trumped by Comets – Bournemouth Echo

POOLE Comets withstood a valiant fight-back from Exeter Aces to emerge 93-85 victors following a thrilling British South West League clash at Harbourside Park.

The hosts looked set to run away with the contest until the Devon outfit found their feet during the closing heats.

Poole led from the start thanks to a maximum heat win from Callum Smith and Dean Hook before Jay Briggs and Ben Donohue repeated the feat to leave the visitors reeling.

Having established a healthy 13-point lead by the interval, the Comets were in no mood to let it slip and rubbed more salt into Exeter wounds with two more maximum heat wins after the break.

But from that point on, the Aces management made use of some astute tactical changes to win four of the last five races to peg back the Comets advantage.

However, ultimately, the Aces could not compete with Comets all-round strength in depth, with no fewer than six of the home riders chalking up double-figure scores.

Polish ace Matiej Ganczarek was in a different class for the Comets, thrilling the crowd with some well-judged passing moves to finish the match unbeaten by an opponent and received solid support from the rest of the team.

Poole: Jay Briggs 14+1, Fraser Garnett 13+1, Callum Smith 13+2, Dean Hook 11+2, Ben Tinsdale 7, Matiej Ganczarek 15+1, Ben Donohue 11+1, Macie Schmidt 9.

Exeter: Aaron Herbert 16, Rob Geach 10, Connor Tucker 16+1, Dave Murphy 8, Lauren Hookway 6, Dan Winchester 12, Andy Collett 4, Craig Nethercott 13.

Comets football staff filled – YourGV.com

New Halifax County High School Head Football Coach Grayson Throckmorton can now breathe a little easier. Throckmorton said Monday Halifax County School Board members finalized appointments to remaining open coaching spots last week, a move that cemented a full 10-person coaching staff to cover both the varsity and junior varsity teams.

Several familiar faces are returning to the Comets coaching staff this season including linebackers and assistant offensive line coach Fred Palmore, Jay Cole who will serve as co-defensive coordinator and offensive and defensive line coach, Stanley Brandon who will coach defensive backs and primarily work with safeties and Thomas Crews who will be the wide receivers coach and assistant defensive line coach.

Also returning to the coaching staff are Eugene Turbeville who will serve as JV head coach and JV defensive coordinator, and Kwame Lambert who will serve as JV offensive coordinator and offensive backs coach.

New to the Comets football staff this season is Dave Hale who comes to Halifax County high School from Bluestone High School. Hale will serve as co-defensive coordinator with Cole and will coach safeties and defensive backs.

Also new is former Halifax County High School offensive and defensive line standout Terence Brandon who went on to play football at Averett University. He will serve as JV offensive and defensive line coach.

The third new face on the Comets coaching staff is Chris DeJarnette, who served as a volunteer assistant coach at Halifax County Middle School last season. DeJarnette is a Gretna High School graduate and played on two of Gretna High Schools state championship football teams before continuing his playing career at UVA-Wise.

The dust is starting to settle a little bit because we now have the staff finished, Throckmorton remarked.

Thats not only work on my part, its work on the part of our athletic director (Allen Lawter), our principal (Michael Lewis) and administration trying to find jobs for people to come in and coach football.

Throckmorton says he has a good mix of people on the staff who bring a variety of knowledge and experience to the Comets football program.

Everybody we have on staff brings something to the table that is more than just being a football coach, Throckmorton pointed out.

One of our new hires, Terence Brandon, is a youth counselor out of Danville. He brings in not only the ability to coach offensive and defensive line, which is what he played at Averett University and at Halifax County High School, he brings in the ability to work with our youngsters who may need some help here and there with behavior and other crises they may be going through.

Another new hire we have, Dave Hale, has coached at several different schools and brings to the table having been a guidance counselor for nine years and the understanding of what the guys need to take in classes, the SATs, all of the qualifiers they have to meet to get into college and qualify for the next level, Throckmorton added.

All of our guys bring something to the table that is really good, and with the help from the administration of being able to offer these people jobs, we have been able to fill our 10-man staff with some very qualified folks, and I feel really good about that.

Counting today, only four summer workout sessions remain for the approximately 40 players that have regularly attended off-season workouts throughout the spring and summer. A football clinic for youngsters of all ages is scheduled Monday, July 31 and Tuesday, August 1, with the first day of what Throckmorton is calling football camp, set for Wednesday, August 2.

While the completion of filling the Comets football coaching staff came at this late date, Throckmorton says there is no panic regarding pre-season preparations.

There is a natural feeling that you are a little bit behind, Throckmorton remarked, but I havent felt like weve been behind. Before we got everyone in place, we went ahead with installing our overall system (of offense and defense). I was putting that in and working with some positions and things I normally wouldnt coach. I was pulling that slack until we hired someone to take those reigns over.

Weve got the system going with what we want to do with regard to Xs and Os and the understanding of that, Throckmorton continued.

Really, were going to be kind of on an equal page with the defense and offense being together going into camp. In that aspect, the transition has been pretty smooth. Everything is falling together about the best it possibly could.

Next year, Throckmorton added, we will be more ahead of the curve because I will have been in the building for a year and the staff will have been in place and we wont have to go through this again.

Ex-Comets coach Green part of growing trend – Rome Sentinel

(AP) Rick Tocchet is the kind of coach who doesnt mind if a player calls him at 9 p.m. to share a thought.

He doesnt expect that to change as he goes from a Pittsburgh Penguins assistant to head coach of the Arizona Coyotes. Tocchet has done it before, and his 148 games as an NHL head coach make the 53-year-old one of the more experienced hires this offseason as teams look for the next new idea rather than recycling from the past.

Three vacancies were filled by first-timers: the Buffalo Sabres Phil Housley, Florida Panthers Bob Boughner and Vancouver Canucks Travis Green. Tocchet and the Los Angeles Kings John Stevens are longtime assistants with some time running a bench, while the Dallas Stars Ken Hitchcock and Vegas Golden Knights Gerard Gallant represent the only seasoned coaches.

Almost every general manager cited communication skills as a major reason for prioritizing youth over experience.

Its clear for me: (Tocchet is) one of the best communicators Ive come across, not only in hockey but probably professionally as well, Coyotes GM John Chayka said. He can just relate to the players. Hes very firm. He can motivate. He can be aggressive in his approach, but he can also be that big brother kind of approach.

Tocchet, Housley, Boughner, Green, Stevens and Gallant all played in the NHL in the 1990s and represent the new-school concept of a players coach, mixing positive relationships with accountability. Likable Jon Cooper took the Tampa Bay Lightning to the 2015 Stanley Cup Final in his first go-round, while other experiments like Dallas Eakins, Claude Noel, Ron Rolston and Mike Johnston didnt go so well.

More time is needed to determine the success of some, like the Philadelphia Flyers Dave Hakstol, New Jersey Devils John Hynes and Colorado Avalanches Jared Bednar, but teams are more willing than ever to take a risk on coaching rookies. Ten of the 31 coaches are in their first head jobs in the NHL as some prominent experienced coaches like Lindy Ruff, Jacques Martin, Jack Capuano and Marc Crawford have accepted roles as assistants.

Florida GM Dale Tallon went through an exhaustive, extensive search before Boughners interview blew him away, and Chayka talked to more than 25 coaches before calling Tocchet the best candidate by a wide margin.

Kings GM Rob Blake said there was literally no search as Stevens was the natural fit to succeed Darryl Sutter, and the Canucks didnt interview anyone but Green, who coached their top minor league affiliate for the past four seasons.

Buffalo GM Jason Botterill said Housley was uniquely qualified for the job based on his playing and coaching careers. Hockey experience on the ice and at other levels may be just as valuable to executives picking coaches.

Ive been a player, Ive been an owner, Ive been an executive, Ive been a head coach, an assistant coach, Boughner said with a significant nod to his time in junior hockey. I know this league and I know the game and Im ready for this challenge.

One of the biggest challenges in the transition from assistant to head coach is the different dynamic with players. Panthers captain Derek MacKenzie had Boughner as an assistant in Columbus and considered him approachable but someone who knew when to put his foot down.

MacKenzie acknowledged it wont be exactly the same with Boughner in charge. After winning the Stanley Cup the past two seasons with the Penguins, Tocchet figures he wont alter his approach in Arizona.

Thats the million-dollar question to me because I dont want to change as a person, Tocchet said. I dont think that because you carry a title head coach that all of a sudden youve got to be distanced from your players.

His old boss disagrees. Mike Sullivan, who spent several seasons as an assistant under John Tortorella between head-coaching gigs and was hired by the Penguins midway through the 2015-16 season, insists theres a delineation in day-to-day duties.

Ultimately I have to make difficult decisions, whether it be playing time or lineup decisions or power-play combinations, Sullivan said. I think by nature of the head-coaching position, its a very different relationship. ... Thats just reality.

Tocchet was credited with helping Phil Kessel, Housley with Ryan Ellis and other Nashville defensemen, and Boughner with Sharks Norris Trophy winner Brent Burns. But perhaps more in common than their hands-on work in improving players, these first-time head coaches all sold their styles as fast and exciting.

I dont want to take the stick out of guys hands, Tocchet said. I want them not to think too much. I want them to play. ... You have to give players freedom, especially in todays NHL, to play.

New Hartford’s Mike Zalewski signs to play in Germany – Utica Observer Dispatch

New Hartford native Mike Zalewski has signed to the play for the Straubing Tigers in Germany. Straubing plays in the country's top hockey league, the DEL.

Mike Zalewski will play for a new team next season.

The New Hartford native, who turns 25 in mid-August, will also be playing in a different country.

Zalewski, a former New York State Player of the Year at New Hartford High School, has signed to the play for the Straubing Tigers in Germany. Straubing, which first announced Zalewski's signing on its website, plays in the country's top hockey league, the DEL.

"I'm really excited about it," Zalewski said during a phone interview Monday afternoon. "I think just a fresh start with new opportunities will be good. It's new everything. It's a new country. ... I'm excited for the new opportunities that it brings."

The move comes after Zalewski, a forward who is known for his aggressive and determined style on both sides of the ice, played the majority of the last three seasons with the Utica Comets.

Zalewski became an unrestricted free agent this summer after he wasn't given a qualifying offers from Utica's parent team, the Vancouver Canucks, who are adding a large share of young talent to the organization.

The move overseas also reunites him with 30-year-old brother, Steven, who is set to return to Straubing for a third consecutive season. Steven Zalewski has played in 102 regular-season games with Straubing.

"It's an added bonus," Mike Zalewski of playing with his brother. "He obviously played a factor (in signing with Straubing). ... I'm excited to play with him."

In three seasons, Mike Zalewski played a total of 167 regular-season games with the Comets accumulating 24 goals and 39 assists. Zalewski also played a key role on Utica's special teams, including the Comets' penalty kill unit the last few seasons. Mike Zalewski also played in 27 postseason games for the Comets.

Two of arguably the biggest moments of his young pro career came during the 2015-16 season. He earned a rare midseason NHL contract with the Canucks and appeared in three games with the Canucks.

Later that season, he had one of the his biggest on-ice moments. That came when he had the primary assist on Alex Grenier's game-winner in and exciting Game 3 playoff series against Albany in the Calder Cup playoffs in 2016.

Last season, his third full professional campaign was slowed after being injured in November when his upper body collided with the net trying to break up a play against Hartford early in the season. The injury caused him to missed more than a month of action.

Mike Zalewski is the latest player to spend time with the Comets to sign with a different team as the Vancouver organization boasts a plethora of players at forward. Mike Zalewski joins forwards Alex Grenier, Curtis Valk and Derek Hulak who have each signed elsewhere.

Mike Zalewski led New Harford to the state Division 2 championship in 2009. After high school, he scored 21 goals and added 26 assists in 75 games during two collegiate seasons at RPI.

The 6-foot-2, 205-pound Mike Zalewski, who went undrafted, began his pro career near the end of the 2013-14 season, when he played two games for the Canucks. In all, he's played in six NHL games registering two assists.

No. 1 Lady Bobcats stunned by Comets – Cedar Valley Daily Times

VAN HORNE On Tuesday, the Benton Community softball team was in the same position they had been the last five years, playing in the regional finals.

Taking the field as the favorite, the WaMaC Conference champion Lady Bobcats hosted No. 14 Charles City for the Class 4A Region 4 final.

No stranger to big games, having won the 3A state title last year, Benton was poised for another trip to Harlan Rogers Sports Complex, but, uncharacteristically the Lady Bobcats played themselves into a hole after giving up two unearned runs to the Comets. Only able to plate one run, Benton lost in a stunning upset, 2-1, failing to reach state for the first time in two years.

Weve been in big games before but we didnt play like it tonight, we played scared, said 25 year head coach Eric Stenberg. The kids looked like they hadnt been there before so we werent making good decisions. We didnt give up any earned runs so we lost the game without giving up an earned run and that stings. We just werent ourselves being aggressive and for whatever reason the girls just werent mentally ready to go.

The biggest letdown for Stenberg seemed to be the fact that his team lost without giving up an earned run. In the top of the third inning, Charles Citys Payton Reams scored the first run of the game after coming home on a wild pitch that got away from Bentons starting pitcher Anna Stenberg. On the very same play, Bentons senior catcher Jaicee Lyons made a throw down to third for an attempted pickoff, but after an errant throw and catch, Tayler Schmidt was freed up to cross safely into home for the Comets second run of the game.

We didnt play the way were capable of playing and to lose like that it does hurt, coach Stenberg said. Our kids battled, we were in there till the end, it just didnt fall our way.

Limited in their ability to hit and be aggressive at the plate, Bentons main opportunity to cause some damage and get back in the game came in the bottom of the fourth.

With one out and runners on second and third, Stenberg stepped to the plate, laid down a bunt and scored sophomore Angie Gorkow from third. In the same sequence, courtesy runner for Lyons, freshman Mallory Thys, got caught up in a pickle between third and home, allowing Charles City to run her down and limit the threat by tagging her for the second out.

We had girls in scoring position we just had some base running errors, we threw the ball around a little bit, we just didnt get the timely hit and all year long weve kind of had the timely hit to bring us out of things; we just couldnt get that tonight, said coach Stenberg.

Usually able to rally back after scoring their first run in a comeback situation, this time things were different for Benton as Charles City and their starting pitcher Sami Heyer limited the Lady Bobcats to just one hit through the final three innings.

Thats usually what happens, we get going again. Kids got to get into it and get some more confidence and I was hopeful that would be the case, we just had too many let downs and too many mental mistakes. We werent mentally sharp tonight and unfortunately thats one of the reasons we lost, commented the Benton coach.

I knew one through nine they were going to be good hitters, I didnt identify one single hitter. We tried putting that girl (Gorkow) on and it worked out to our advantage just because we had an open base but other than that Sammy (Heyer) hit spots and we played solid defensively, said Charles City coach Brian Bohlen.

Never able to mount a comeback, Benton fell in the regional final for the first time in two years with a final score of 2-1.

We werent real disciplined at the plate, said coach Stenberg. Credit to her (Heyer) she had us off-balance and then we started playing scared so its hard to score runs when youre not being aggressive and have that look in your eye like your confident and for whatever reason we just didnt look confident tonight. Still had our chances but a combination of throwing the ball around, some base running errors and just not being aggressive at the plate kind of cost us.

Following her teams uncharacteristic loss, Benton sophomore standout Grace Martensen said, Obviously were all sad and this is never in a million years what we thought would happen but, I guess our heads werent in the game. We came in playing scared and thats not how you should do that. Weve been in this situation, third round, going to state multiple times; you should know how to execute.

Defenseman Sifers joins Utica Comets; Canucks re-sign Chaput – Utica Observer Dispatch

Ben Birnell

The Utica Comets have added a veteran presence to their blue line.

Jaime Sifers, who is known as reliable defenseman, has signed a two-year AHL deal, the Comets announced Thursday.

The 34-year-old Sifers joins Utica after spending the last three seasons in the Columbus Blue Jackets' organization. In 217 AHL games with Springfield and Lake Erie/Cleveland, Sifers totaled 14 goals and 61 points.

During those three seasons, Sifers, who is 5-foot-11 and 200 pounds, also served as an alternate captain and was part of 2016 Calder Cup champion team.

The Stanford, Connecticut, native has accumulated 35 goals and 149 points in 544 AHL games with with Cleveland, Springfield, Chicago, Houston and Toronto. Sifers' career also includes 37 NHL games his last appearance was during the 2009-10 season as well as three seasons in Germany.

Sifers is the second player to join the Comets on an AHL deal since free agency opened July 1. However, the parent Vancouver Canucks have a very crowded group on defense after adding to their depth with free-agent signings like Michael Del Zotto and Patrick Wiercioch this month and re-signing prospects Evan McEneny and Andrey Pedan.

With Sifers, the Comets have four players signed to AHL deals that would count toward the league's veteran rule during this season. A team can dress five veterans (more than 321 professional regular-season games) and one veteran exempt (between 261 and 320 pro games) in a contest.

Sifers joins forwards Carter Bancks (428), Wacey Hamilton (336) and Darren Archibald (347) as veterans. Depending on decisions made by the Canucks, the Comets could be coming up against the limit (or be over) this season.

Canucks re-sign Chaput

Vancouver has re-signed forward Michael Chaput to a one-year, one-way contract Thursday.

The 25-year-old Chaput played a career-best 68 NHL games last season with the Canucks and finished with four goals and nine points. The one-way contract means Chaput will earn $687,500 whether he plays in the NHL or AHL next season. He would need to clear waivers to play in Utica, according to CapFriendly.

The 6-foot-2, 204-pound forward started last season in Utica before being called up to the Canucks, when they were dealing with a string of injuries. Chaput, who was expected to be an offensive leader for Utica had two goals and 11 assists in 10 games with the Comets. In total, he's played in 246 AHL games and 126 NHL games.

Heading into this season, Vancouver also has a large forward group and will have some decisions to make on who is sent to the the Comets when training camp begins.

Shields signs overseas

David Shields has signed with a new team.

The 26-year-old defenseman, who provided depth for the Comets over the past two seasons, signed to play for Austria-based EC Villacher SV on Thursday. The team plays in the country's top league.

Shields, who is from Western New York, played in 80 regular-season for the Comets after first joining the team in December 2015. The stay-at-home defenseman had three goals and 17 assists during his time with Utica.

It will be Shields' first stint overseas after mostly playing in the AHL (284 games) since 2011.

Comets chasing Ghosts at Grafton fortress – Coffs Coast Advocate

IT'S quickly become Group 2's version of mission impossible - beating the Grafton Ghosts at Frank McGuren Field.

It's the mission Coffs Harbour faces tomorrow in a top of the table clash.

In the Ghosts past four matches on home soil they've only conceded a miserly six points in total.

In other words most players have more chance of scoring with Miranda Kerr than they do of scoring at the Grafton fortress.

Seeing as Comets playing-coach Kerrod Selmes is a happy family man, he's more interested in finding a way to have his team cross the try line often enough to upset the Ghosts unbeaten run towards a possible Claytons Cup.

"We've got to be at our best to beat them but at the end of the day everyone is beatable," Selmes said.

The last time Coffs Harbour lost was to the Ghosts back at the start of May. Since then the Comets have been building momentum as they continue to gel as a unit.

"There's a belief there now we can get the job done if we put it all together," the coach said.

Sawtell has been eyeing off third spot and a double chance and tomorrow the panthers can grab it.

Sawtell is only half a game behind South Grafton who currently hold on to that spot on the table. The two meet tomorrow in what could be a semi final rehearsal.

Refreshed after a bye, if the Panthers win tomorrow it will see them jump the reigning premiers but with only three rounds left after this weekend, a loss will consign them to an elimination semi final.

This afternoon Orara Valley and Macksville meet at Coramba Sportsground in an encounter both teams need to win to ensure their finals destiny remains in their own hands.

GROUP 2

Saturday Orara Valley v Macksville

Sunday Grafton Ghosts v Coffs Harbour Sawtell v South Grafton Nambucca Heads v Bellingen

Darren Archibald: Utica Comets ‘right fit for me’ – Utica Observer Dispatch

Ben Birnell

Darren Archibald wants another crack at reaching the NHL.

After weighing his options this offseason, the veteran left wing believes returning to the Utica Comets for a fifth season gives him the best opportunity to reach that goal.

The 27-year-old Archibald turned in the best of his six professional seasons during a challenging campaign with the Comets in which he led the team in goals and points, added a role as a key penalty killer and was among the team leaders. The breakout performance helped earn him team MVP honors and cement his spot as a favorite among local hockey fans.

I just feel like Utica was the right fit for me, Archibald said Wednesday, a day after the Comets officially announced his one-year AHL deal. I still think theres a lot of opportunity in Vancouver for me, especially with (former Comets coach Travis Green) up there now. I want to come into camp strong and try to earn an NHL contract.

Archibald, who played 16 games with the parent Vancouver Canucks during the 2013-14 season, knows he has more work to do to get back to hockeys top level. The Canucks already have a crowded group at forward, which will likely create some competition in the fall and leaves a lot of question marks.

Archibald said hes been able to work on his upper-body strength this summer after battling through injuries in previous seasons. Hes also working on his quickness and speed in an effort to stay a step ahead.

I think the biggest thing for me is to stay focused and keep doing the same things and even more, said Archibald, who noted he talked to Green once while he was weighing his options. Theres no time to take the foot off the gas in this sport. You have to earn everything you get.

Archibald said he talked with Carter Bancks and Wacey Hamilton both also signed to AHL deals and looks forward to being part of the team's leadership with them. With the departure of Alex Grenier he and Curtis Valk will be missed, Archibald said and defenseman John Negrin currently a free agent, he knows he could be the only player returning that was part of the Comets roster the first season.

Ive basically called Utica home for the last four years, Archibald said. Ive enjoyed playing there and being the only one from the inaugural season is definitely a special thing.

Comets going to California – Lethbridge Herald

By Woodard, Dale on July 14, 2017.

Dale Woodard

Lethbridge Herald

sports@lethbridgeherald.com

Evidently, word of the Raymond Comets rugby program has reached south of the border.

Now, senior varsity members of the girls team that captured the Alberta Schools Athletic Association provincial championship in early-June are headed there for a 7s rugby tournament in Gridley, California.

Starting today, 10 members Albertas best rugby team will pit themselves against some top-ranked U.S. talent from three different states and it all started with a conversation between southern Alberta referee official Paul Howe and the tournament organizers.

He went down there to do training and referee in a tournament, said Comets head coach Dan Bikman of Howe. He got talking with (the organizer) and he said Theres a really strong program out of southern Alberta and if youre looking to put something together, contact them. He called me and I said it sounds awesome. So I told my senior varsity players and said If theres a group of you that wants to go, well go. If you dont want to go, no pressure. Summer is tough to organize the kids because they have family stuff and play different sports, but I got a good group of 10, which is a good sample of our program. We have good speed, good power and good skill.

As it turns out, that area is kind of a hotbed for rugby. He wanted to put together a kind of best-of-the-best tournament and invited us to go. He has four teams that rank in the top-10 in the U.S. Itll be a competitive experience, thats for sure.

Getting their first glimpse of American opponents, the 10 Comets making the trip are understandably looking forward to it.

Theyre super excited, said Bikman. Theyre excited about the travel experience and theyre excited about the competitive experience. To play at the highest level, at least in western North America, will be a huge privilege for them. These are clubs out of Sacramento, Utah, Colorado and all through the California area. Weve never played an American team. Weve played B.C. and Saskatchewan. This is the first time weve ever been south to play.

I hope we dont have our hands too full, but I think we can compete down there. Itll be awesome for the kids to see a different area where rugby is strong. Rugby is strong in Alberta and specifically in southern Alberta and for them to see another hotbed and a place where theres lots enthusiasm for rugby, I think thats going to be awesome.

Today is the pooling portion of the tournament with the championship round starting Saturday, said Bikman.

Its kind of a round-robin and then a playoff.

The trip has turned into a family affair.

We have a couple of families caravaning and taking kids down, said Bikman. Ive got 10 players going and I think six of them will have their parents with them.

Staying in the small town of just over 6,500, accommodations will be similar to what the Comets offer during their annual Christmas tournament.

Its a small town, it only has one hotel, said Bikman. Its actually similar to how we do the Sugar Bowl in Raymond where the kids come and stay with host families.

This theory suggests that the space rock created less debris than previously believed, suggesting the space rock was a smaller object. This means that in order for the smaller rock to have generated the giant crater, it had to have been going extremely fast.... For example, an asteroid 1000 feet wide can be neutralized far outside Earth's gravitational field with a warning time of just 30 days, according to Wie. Computer simulations suggest that the percentage of the destroyed asteroids mass that would actually hit Earth is less than 0.1%. Most likely the asteroid mitigation would cause a heavy meteor shower to transpire, or events of the like of the 2013 Chelyabinsk meteor- although, that would be a small price to pay compared to the original asteroid, whic... When these ideas of gravity and the shape of a planet's orbit were brought together piece by piece, this new theory changed how a projectile traveling through space could simply cross an orbital pattern, which would in turn change the path of the moving object.... Prep softball: Comets stun top-ranked Benton, punch state ticket – Waterloo Cedar Falls Courier

BENTON To win a state tournament, Charles City softball Coach Brian Bohlen assumed his team would, at some point, have to go through the top-ranked team in Class 4A.

Though they still have work to do, the Comets did just that in the Region 4 championship game Tuesday night.

Sami Heyer struck out nine and Charles City manufactured just enough offense to squeak out a 2-1 win over 4A No. 1 Benton Community on the Bobcats home field.

Its unbelievable, Heyer said afterward. It hasnt really sunk in yet, but its exciting.

Heyer got all her run support in the top of the third inning, thanks in part to some sluggish Bobcat fielding.

With Payton Reams on second, Tayler Schmidt hit a sharp grounder to third base. Wanting to keep Reams at second, Benton third baseman Angela Gorkow hesitated, allowing Schmidt to reach first safely, while also giving Reams a chance to reach third on the throw.

Reams then broke the scoreless tie, coming home to score

on a wild pitch. Having already taken second, Schmidt tried to take third on the play, then got to come all the way home as Bobcat catcher Jaicee Lyons threw the ball into left, giving the Comets a 2-0 lead.

The Bobcats cut into the lead in the fourth, when Gorkow scored on an errant throw home by Heyer. Lyons then attempted to score the tying run from second, but Comet catcher Kelby Katcher beat her home with the throw and Heyer tagged her out.

The error was one of the few mistakes Heyer made on the evening, and Bohlen praised her poise in the pitching circle.

She hit spots all night, he said. Even when she worked behind, she trusted herself and I trusted her to hit spots.

She was also able to work out of critical jams. Benton put the tying run on third in both the fourth and sixth innings, but Heyer never allowed it to come home.

This year (Ive) been real good at trying to forget (about the runner at third), Heyer said. I know theyre there but I try not to think about it. I just focus on the batter and whatever happens, happens.

What happens next for Charles City is a return trip to the state tournament, something Bohlen believed to be an obtainable goal throughout the year.

Going into the season, I said our goal is to win conference and win state, he said. I thought we honestly had the team to do it. I dont know if they believed it at the time.

But we werent intimidated (tonight). The girls went into this game very confident and it showed.

When talking to his players, its apparent the doubts Bohlen spoke of are clearly a thing of the past.

We just beat the No. 1 seed, said Ciana Sonberg, who had three of the Comets five hits. So I think were going to give every team a run for their money.
