Comets Corner: Lake Placid

January 13, 2014 - American Hockey League (AHL) Utica Comets With the Comet players on the road, en route to Oklahoma and the southwestern area of the country last week, the Comets front office staff seized the opportunity to take in some of the United States' finest hockey history in Lake Placid, New York.

The Comets front office staff members the three-hour drive north to Lake Placid, New York, which played host to 1932 and 1980 Winter Olympics. The three day trip marked not only an enjoyable time for Utica's staff but also a retreat to increase team unity away from an office setting.

Everyone arrived late Sunday afternoon amidst the NFL's wild card playoff games and the staff exchanged their secret santa gifts as the holiday season finally came to a close for the Comets, following a nine game home stand. With a fun exchange based primarily on "inside jokes", the gift giving was a bonding experience for everyone and whipped an already tight knit staff that much closer together.

As Colin Kaepernick led the 49ers down the field on a game winning drive, the front office staff walked across Mirror Lake and enjoyed a dinner at the luxurious Lake Placid Boat House Club, before a night in a snowy, but beautiful Lake Placid town. An early set of meetings followed the ensuing morning, where a variety of topics were discussed on how to make the Comets experience even better for the fans.

With temperatures north of forty and rain on the way down, the Comets staff was deprived of a day of skiing at Whiteface Mountain or a game of pond hockey on the lake. Many employees used their free time to walk to and visit the historic Olympic Center in the middle of the town.

Inside were the two hockey rinks from the 1932 and 1980 Olympic Games, as well as a third rink that doubled as a curling facility. The 1932 rink was home to a Canadian gold medal, as our neighbors to the North finished with 11 points, two ahead of the United States who won silver. Despite playing home to many elite international players in the past, the 1932 Rink hosts mainly youth competition these days.

Appropriately, the 1980 rink was the star attraction, with everyone being a huge fan of the Miracle on Ice that occurred between the United States and Soviet Union during the medal round. The United States won gold in the following game on home ice against Finland, which completed the greatest upset in sports history. A trip to Lake Placid would never be complete without seeing where Herb Brooks and the boys completed the miracle, 33 years ago.

In addition to the arenas, the speed skating oval where Eric Heiden collected five gold medals was located directly out front. An exciting tour for the Comets staff was complete with a trip to the USA Hockey store to stock up for the incoming Sochi Olympics.

Despite a great time had by the Comets front office, Streamline Concepts, the local company that produces all the Comets videos, Chuck Obernesser and Jim Raymer felt excluded from the Comets plans. What resulted, toed the line between lyrical genius and utter chaos and for one small window, The AUD was under new management.

Comets Outlook: The Comets mounted a valiant come from behind effort, but it came up just short in a 5-3 defeat to the Texas Stars. Cal O'Reilly paced the Comets with two points (1-1-2), while Alexandre Grenier and Brandon DeFazio also scored for Utica.Travis Morin, the AHL's leading scorer, led the way for the Stars with a natural hat trick to open the game. Comets Grab Victory in Pennsylvania

January 11, 2014 - Major Indoor Soccer League (MISL) Missouri Comets INDEPENDENCE, Missouri - The Missouri Comets finished off their two-game road trip with a resounding 13-5 win over the expansion Roar at Santander Arena in Reading, Pennsylvania. Missouri's Byron Alvarez finished with three points, scoring a goal and assisting on another. Reading's leading scorer, JerJer Gibson had a 3-point goal to lead his team.

Coming off a disappointing 11-8 loss last night in Syracuse, the Comets were determined to have a good showing against the winless Pennsylvania Roar. Robert Palmer started the night off on the right foot with an unassisted goal a little over a minute into the game. Coady Andrews added a three-point score midway through the quarter and Ramone Palmer chipped in a score midway through the second quarter to give Missouri a 7-0 halftime lead.

After suffering a third quarter collapse on Friday, the Comets controlled possession throughout the period. Capitalizing on a Pennsylvania mistake, Alvarez scored early in the quarter to increase their lead to 9-0. Now, with a comfortable lead, Missouri played it safe, passing the ball all the way back to keeper, Danny Waltman if they felt the play needed to be reset.

Perhaps a little too relaxed, a slow-paced pass back to Waltman allowed the Roar's newly signed Kingsley Onwuka to confuse the Comets defense and get his side their first points of the night with a little over four minutes remaining in the third quarter. Pennsylvania's Gibson found the far side netting past Waltman to briefly cut the Comets lead to 9-5 early in the fourth quarter.

Missouri remained calm as Pennsylvania hoped to climb back into the match by inserting Ptah Myers as a sixth attacker. Brian Harris pulled the ball out of the defensive zone and streaked down to the corner. Perhaps thinking he was just killing time, the Roar's defender allowed Harris to turn and hit a rocket of a shot into the net. Alvarez and John Sosa also beat Pennsylvania's pressure in the final minutes of the game, giving them a two-on-none breakaway against Roar goalkeeper, Peter Pappas. The indoor soccer legend, Pappas, had no chance as Sosa's score gave the Comets a 13-5 lead, which was all they needed as they played keep-away for the final minute of action.

The Comets return to the Independence Events Center on Friday, January 17th at 7:35p.m. CT to face the Milwaukee Wave. The match also features the World Famous Mascot Game at halftime. Calvin the Comets Canine, Dollar Dog and many of their costumed friends play an exhibition soccer match at halftime unlike any other. For tickets and information, call 855.4KC.GOAL.

Comets fall to Stars

January 12, 2014 - American Hockey League (AHL) Utica Comets After falling behind 4-0, the Comets comeback bid came up just short, as the Travis Morin show proved to be too much for the Utica team Saturday night, at the Cedar Park Center. Morin's three goal night carried the Texas Stars to a 5-3 victory over the Utica Comets.

With the defeat, the Comets fell to 11-19-2-2, and the Stars improved to 23-10-2-3. Travis Morin led the Stars with a Hat Trick while Cal O'Reilly paced the Comets with two points (1-1-2).

After a Comets turnover that led to a Stars 2-on-1, Travis Morin lit the lamp for the 21st time, off a feed from Colton Sceviour. It was Sceviour's 38th point of the season.

Less than four minutes later Morin netted his second goal of the night. A failed Comets clearing attempt found Morin's stick on the point. Morin cut across the ice, and fired a wrist shot past Cannata from the top of the circle.

Morin was not done yet. 4:53 into the second period, Morin finished off his Hat Trick, with his league-leading 23rd goal of the season. Morin streaked down Cannata's right hand side, and tucked a wrist shot just under the crossbar to give the Stars a 3-0 lead. The goal was Morin's 50th point of the season, and was the first short-handed goal the Comets have given up.

Joe Cannata's night would end just under ten minutes later. Sceviour fired an off-angle shot from the boards that snuck through Cannata's pads, for the Stars' fourth goal of the night. The goal set the stage for Mathieu Corbeil's American Hockey League's debut.

With a 1:43 left in the second period, the Comets picked up a goal to trim the Stars lead to 4-1. Benn Ferriero, off a pass from Nicklas Jensen, put a shot on goal from below the face-off circle, Cal O'Reilly picked up the rebound, and backhanded it home. It was O'Reilly's third goal of the season.

The Comets pulled the game to within two, 8:03 into the final period. Cal O'Reilly, from below the goal line, found Alex Grenier streaking into the slot. Grenier one-timed the feed past Nilstorp for his 11th goal of the season.

Just two minutes later the Comets struck again, to make it a one-goal game. A blast from the point from Patrick Mullen was deflected right to Yann Sauve who was stationed at the other point. A blast from Sauve found its way through heavy traffic in front, and onto Brandon DeFazio's stick. DeFazio would not miss from point blank range, for his third goal of the season. The goal deficit would be as close as the Comets would come.

With 45 seconds to play, Curtis McKenzie put the icing on the cake for the Stars. McKenzie netted his 12th goal of the season, this one with an empty net to put the game away.

Comets’ size too much for Buffaloes

GEORGETOWN The Oakwood Comets had a decisive fourth quarter as they used their size and precision passing to pull away late and defeat the Georgetown-Ridge Farm Buffaloes 65-47 on Saturday in Vermilion Valley Conference play.

The Comets outscored the Buffaloes 24-6 in the fourth to notch their sixth victory of the season and first VVC win.

We try to put the ball inside to our post players because we have an advantage over most teams in the area in the paint, Oakwood coach Doug Robinson said.

Cutting to the basket throughout the game was the games leading scorer, 6-foot, 5-inch Jeremy Watson (15 points), who was the recipient of many good passes from the other bigs Skyler Slade (14 points 8 rebounds) and Parker Lee (10 points) who were double and triple teamed at times.

We do what we are told, Watson said. Coach Robinson says get the ball to the post and cut when the post receive the ball and tonight we finished at the rim.

We like each other and we want to see the team succeed so when theres an open teammate we find them and they can put the ball in the hole, Slade said.

To start the third quarter, the Buffaloes went on a 7-0 run with some fine shooting from guards Dylan Bina (13 points) and Tyson Reed (10 points) to take their first lead since early in the first quarter 33-31.

The Comets came right back with a run of their own to take the lead back with two minutes to go in 3rd quarter. Both teams finished out the quarter exchanging baskets and Oakwood held a slim lead going into the 4th quarter 43-41.

We had a tough game last night in a close loss (61-59 overtime loss to Chrisman on Friday) and today our legs just werent there in the second half but the team played hard and we got quality looks and shot opportunities like we normally do, but we just couldnt convert, GRF coach Adam Latoz said.

The first half was a well-played game and a seesaw battle with both teams having sound play.

Comets Unable to Beat Syracuse on the Road

January 10, 2014 - Major Indoor Soccer League (MISL) Missouri Comets INDEPENDENCE, Missouri (January 10, 2013) - The Missouri Comets continue to struggle in Syracuse, tonight falling by the score 11-8. Four different players found their way onto the score sheet for the Comets, including league-leader Vahid Assadpour. In the end, it wasn't enough though as the Syracuse Silver Knights scored five goals in the 3rd quarter to secure their win.

Both teams came into tonight's game with records of 5-3. The Comets looked much better than that early. Lucas Rodriguez only needed 44 seconds to get the Comets on the board. Later in the quarter, Brian Harris took a shot from distance that bounced through the defense. Ramone Palmer bounced on the rebound to score. Milan Ivanovic found the corner netting with a blistering shot from the right side to give the Comets a 6-0 halftime lead.

Syracuse came out for the second half with determination. Within the first three minutes they had cut the score down to 6-5 with scores from Bozidar Jelovac and Nate Bourdeau. Knights' forward Neto gave Syracuse their first lead shortly after that with a two point goal from the left side. Missouri's Vahid Assadpour retook the lead for the Comets by scoring his league leading seventeenth goal. Cory Elenio answered right back for the Knights and then Neto scored his second of the night with less than 30 seconds left in the quarter.

Down 11-8 entering the fourth quarter, the Comets controlled possession. They outshot the Knights nearly 2-1 in the quarter. However, they were unable to score as Syracuse fell into a defensive shell throughout the quarter. Neither side would score in the final frame as the Knights held on to defeat the Comets 11-8.

The Comets will look to rebound immediately as they travel to face the Pennsylvania Roar tomorrow night at Santander Arena. Kickoff is scheduled for 6:05p.m. CT. A streaming broadcast of the game can be seen on the Comets website, CometsIndoorSoccer.com/Live-Feed.

Comets Unable to Beat Syracuse on the Road

Silver Knights Halftime Rebellion Downs Comets

January 10, 2014 - Major Indoor Soccer League (MISL) Syracuse Silver Knights SYRACUSE, N.Y. - The Syracuse Silver Knights (7-3) returned on Friday, January 10th to the Oncenter War Memorial Arena for the first time in 2014 to take on the Missouri Comets (6-4). The Silver Knights had already defeated the Comets when Kenardo Forbes' impressive hat-trick decided a pulsating encounter, marking the Syracuse outfit's first away win at the Independence Events Center. This time again, the Silver Knights had the better of the Comets, 11-8, following their tremendous halftime fight-back.

The Silver Knights made the worst start imaginable. The Comets were aggressive in their pressing and incisive when attacking. The visitors' early pressure immediately paid off as Bryan O'Quinn miscued his clearance right at a Comets player. Lucas Rodriguez collected the ball and smashed home a vicious, dipping volley (1').

The Comets thus grabbed the early lead, but did not let up. The Comets immediately resumed their assault and the Silver Knights' midfield was smothered, their attack snuffed out, and their defense too easily breached. The Silver Knights' defensive laxism again showed when Brian Harris' solo run destabilized them for but a second, allowing Ramone Palmer to pick up the loose ball and tap in from close range (10').

It was really a first quarter to forget for the Silver Knights. They trailed 4-0 and it was a generous score-line considering. O'Quinn had to come up twice with excellent saves, denying Bryon Alvarez in a 1-v-1 and Stefan St. Louis' tap-in at the back-post. The Silver Knights would benefit from further luck, with both Harris and Bryan Perez having seen their long-range efforts crash against the crossbar and post respectively.

Harris was the fulcrum of most of the Comets' better play, causing the Silver Knights defense all sorts of problems. Harris was particularly good coming forward through the middle, creating the extra man in offensive phases and allowing the rest of his teammates to fan out and open up the pitch more.

It was a real show of strength from the MISL's most prolific attack. The Comets created chances at will, cut into open swaths of space in midfield, and besieged O'Quinn's goal for the first half. The third goal soon came, as Milan Ivanovic tapped in (18') St. Louis' assist at the back-post to make it 6-0 at halftime.

As it is often in their habit however, the Silver Knights returned from halftime with more fight and drive. Bo Jelovac immediately set the tone as he unleashed a ferocious shot (30') from outside the arc. The Silver Knights defender's long-range effort flew towards goal, off the post and in. With the Comets' lead now cut in half, the Silver Knights launched another offensive minutes later.

"It was a big goal to help the whole team go forward again," Jelovac said. "We needed that goal to break the ice, and then everything else followed."

Antonio Manfut led a 3-v-1 counter and slipped in Nate Bourdeau down the wing. The Silver Knights player made no mistake and smashed in the ball (32') from a tight angle to bring the Silver Knights within a point of the Comets.

It was another trademark Silver Knights blitzkrieg, as the Comets looked shell-shocked and unable to cope. The shock would come through all the more when Jelovac found Neto in the area. With a defender tight to him, Neto cleverly turned his man and squeezed his shot (36') between the goalkeeper's legs. It completed an impressive comeback as the Silver Knights led for the first time of the game, 7-6.

Comets Fans and AUD Experience Praised

January 10, 2014 - American Hockey League (AHL) Utica Comets The Stadium Journey review of the Utica Memorial Auditorium is in, and it is official: Comets fans and The AUD experience are the sixth best in the American Hockey League, and second to none amongst New York State AHL teams.

Stadium Journey, which is a web venture that is built around optimizing the experience of attending live sporting events by traveling to every North American venue, ranked Comets fans and The AUD experience a 3.9 out of a possible 5 stars after attending the Comets game against the Lake Erie Monsters on New Year's Day. The 3.9 stars ranks The AUD ahead of New York State's other AHL teams; the Albany Devils (3.7), Rochester Americans (3.6), Binghamton Senators (3.3), Adirondack Phantoms (3.3), and Syracuse Crunch (2.9), and 6th in the entire American Hockey League behind the Grand Rapid Griffins (4.3), Toronto Marlies (4.1), Iowa Wild (4.0), Abbotsford Heat (4.0), and the Lake Erie Monsters (4.0).

The official review (which can be viewed here: Utica Memorial Auditorium) takes seven factors into account on each of their trips. The categories, and the Comets rankings in each, are: Food and Beverage (5 stars), Atmosphere (5), Neighborhood (2), Fans (4), Access (3), Return on Investment (4), and Extras (4).

Taking a more in-depth look at the numbers, and eliminating the two uncontrollable categories that are unrelated to the in-game experience(Neighborhood and Access), The AUD comes in at an impressive 4.4 stars, which ranks as #1 amongst all AHL teams, slightly ahead of the Heat, Griffins, and Marlies, who all come in at 4.2 stars.

The author goes on to call the hockey experience at The AUD "special", and notes that The AUD is "one of those great old school barns", and "one of those hockey venues not to be missed."
