Gameday: Comets at Hamilton

January 18, 2014 - American Hockey League (AHL) Utica Comets UTICA COMETS (11-20-2-3) @ HAMILTON BULLDOGS (19-15-0-4)

Copps Coliseum, 7 p.m.

Radio: 94.9 K-Rock

Tonight's Game: The Utica Comets look to snap a six game losing skid as they travel north to take on the Hamilton Bulldogs. The Comets are currently in the midst of their second losing streak of five of more games this season.

When They Last Met: Utica and Hamilton played a thriller at The AUD in late November, which resulted in a 4-3 shootout victory for the Bulldogs. Henrik Tommernes scored with 1:04 left in regulation to force the extra session, while Alexandre Grenier and Darren Archibald also found the back of the net for the Comets. Nathen Beaulieu ended things with the game winning goal in the sixth round of the shootout.

Comets Outlook: The Utica Comets will being seeing red for quite some time, after they dropped their most lopsided decision of the season, an 8-3 defeat against the Albany Devils. Benn Ferriero, Alexandre Grenier and Brandon DeFazio scored for Utica in a losing effort. Goaltenders Mathieu Corbeil and Joe Cannata each surrendered four goals for the Comets, who fell to 11-20-2-3 with the defeat.

Bulldogs Outlook: Hamilton returns to action for the first time since Sunday, Jan. 12, where they defeated the Iowa Wild, 3-1. Nathan Beaulieu led the Bulldogs with two points (1-1-2) and Gabriel Dumont and Nick Tarnasky also scored for Hamilton.

Winger Marc Hagel was the lone goalscorer for Iowa, with a second period power-play marker. Dustin Tokarski earned his 15th victory of the season with 28 saves on 29 shots.

Not So Great Eight: The Utica Comets were on the wrong side of history against Albany, as their eight goals surrendered set a franchise high for goals allowed. The five goal margin of defeat was also a team worst. With the exception of wingers Alex Grenier and David Marshall and defensemen Alex Biega and Peter Andersson, all other 14 Comet skaters had a negative rating for the evening.

The Grass Is Always Grenier: Winger Alex Grenier extended his team high in goals to 12 for the season, with a third period marker against the Albany Devils. The Laval, PQ native is now tied for 12th in the AHL in rookie scoring with 24 points (12-12-24) this season.

Clayton boys stay on championship course, top Southeast Raleigh

CLAYTON During a late fourth quarter timeout, Clayton boys basketball coach Denny Medlin was talking about more than just protecting the Comets five-point lead.

He was telling his team about winning a championship.

Aided by a stellar night from the free throw line, Clayton staved off a pesky Southeast Raleigh team 64-54 Friday to keep its stranglehold atop the Greater Neuse River 4A Conference. For Medlin and the Comets, Fridays game was just another piece of a bigger puzzle.

We talk about how every game is for the conference championship, Medlin said. I wanted to remind them that its not okay to let this one slip through. We had the lead and there wasnt much time left so I just wanted to remind them that its not okay to let it go.

What Worked: Theres one statistic that jumps off the page from this game: Clayton shot 33-for-38 from the free throw line. Southeast Raleigh? Just 1-for-1. By the time the Bulldogs (9-6, 3-4) shot their first and only foul shot of the game with 4:48 left in the fourth quarter -- the Comets had already hoisted up 22 of their own.

Southeast is a very physical team and I thought we were really disciplined, Medlin said. We got the kind of shots that we wanted in the paint; we werent settling for jumpers. We were pretty successful keeping the ball out of the paint defensively whereas on the other end we were trying to get the ball as deep as we can.

Not only was Clayton getting to the free throw line, the Comets were taking advantage once there. Clayton made its first 19 foul shots of the game and Gary Clark led the effort by sinking 18 of his 20.

Weve got such a good shooting team that theres no reason we shouldnt be a good free throw shooting team. Its something we emphasize more, Medlin said. Theres been games where weve shot it well but then we didnt shoot free throws well in our losses.

Turning Point: Clayton watched a 12-point halftime lead all but evaporate in the third quarter and with 1:07 remaining in the game the Comets led just 57-54. But Clayton closed things out at the foul line where else by making five of six bonus free throws in the final minute.

Putting Up Numbers: Clark scored 32 points to lead all scorers, while the Bulldogs Demetrius Sanders accounted for 26 points. Tre Armstead added nine points for Clayton.

Ferriero scores twice to lead Comets over Bulldogs

HAMILTON, Ont. -- The Hamilton Bulldogs stressed the need for a strong start before Saturday's game, but the reality on the ice didn't go as planned. Instead, the Utica Comets scored twice in the first period and the Bulldogs never dug out of the early hole.

Benn Ferriero scored twice and Joe Cannata made 32 saves as the Comets defeated the Bulldogs 3-1 in the American Hockey League on Saturday.

"Our first point before the game was that we needed a good start," said Hamilton head coach Sylvain Lefebvre. "They scored two goals early in the first and then we found ourselves battling through adversity and trying to play catch-up.

"We just didn't have it tonight. All-in-all, we just weren't sharp and we couldn't make things work."

Alexandre Grenier also scored for the Comets (12-20-5), who snapped a six-game losing streak with the victory. Comets leading scorer Pascal Pelletier had three assists to increase his point total to 11 in his past eight games.

Maxime Macenauer scored the lone goal for the Bulldogs (19-15-4), while Dustin Tokarski stopped 31 shots.

Sven Andrighetto had a chance to score for Hamilton three minutes into the game, but the Bulldogs' winger could not get his stick on the cross-ice pass from linemate Martin St. Pierre.

The Bulldogs had possibly their best scoring chance of the first period when Justin Courtnall sprung a short-handed rush with Greg Pateryn in the box for tripping. The winger's initial shot was stopped by Cannata, with Patrick Holland unsuccessfully jamming at the loose rebound.

Utica opened the scoring with what looked like a harmless shot from Ferriero at 11:21. After waiting for a thick screen to develop in front of Tokarski, Peter Andersson released a slow, rising wrist shot that tipped off both Pelletier and Ferriero before beating the goaltender, who didn't see the puck until the last moment.

The Comets doubled their advantage through an almost identical move on the power play at 13:42 when Henrik Tommernes fired a high slap shot that deflected off Grenier in front, and beat the goaltender over the blocking glove at the far post.

Comets Claim Victory over Wave

January 17, 2014 - Major Indoor Soccer League (MISL) Missouri Comets INDEPENDENCE, Missouri - In front of 4,349 fans at the Independence Events Center, the Missouri Comets earn a victory over the Milwaukee Wave in the first half of the home-and-home series that is taking place this weekend. The Comets clicked all night both offensively and defensively, scoring a 22-4 victory. Aided by three long range three-point goals against Milwaukee's sixth attacker, the Comets never trailed and ran away with the victory in the fourth quarter. Lucas Rodriguez led all scorers with seven points for the night.

The first half was a strong one for the Comets. Rodriguez started off the night with a power play goal four minutes into the first quarter. Milwaukee's Ian Bennett would take credit for the Wave's only goal of the half, tapping a shot past Comets goalkeeper Danny Waltman's reach.

Leo Gibson, with the help of a Milwaukee defender, broke the tie shortly after that and Byron Alvarez tapped in a goal from the corner to end the quarter. Defender Brian Harris only needed fourteen seconds of the second quarter to blast home a three point goal and give the Comets a 9-2 lead they would take into the half.

Wary of a third quarter Wave comeback the Comets buckled down defensively. Expectedly, Coach Keith Tozer's squad came out very aggressively from the break. The Wave's Luan Oliveria would score the second, and ultimately final, goal for Milwaukee with five minutes to spare in the period. However, John Sosa worked a perfect restart pass to Lucas Rodriguez to answer.

The fourth quarter belonged to the Comets. Ramone Palmer would score midway through the period to increase the Comets lead to 13-4. Milwaukee then inserted the sixth attacker to try and climb back into the match. Fortunately for the Comets, Robert Palmer, Harris and Rodriguez each took advantage of an open net for three-point scores. Altogether, Missouri netted an eleven point final quarter and a 22-4 victory.

These same two teams square off tomorrow night in Milwaukee at 6:00pm CT. Fans can watch the match live on the Comets website, CometsIndoorSoccer.com/Live-Feed. Missouri returns home to the Independence Events Center next Friday, January 24th at 7:35pm CT to face the St. Louis Ambush in the team's annual Retro Game. Balanced Comets take down Rebels

FULTON Starting with the Caston Shootout from earlier in the month, J.R. Howells Caston squad has been able to mend its early wounds from the comforts of home.

The Comets entered Friday nights game having won four of five games during the home stretch and were looking to continue the success against conference foe South Newton Friday.

Needless to say, the Rebels have had another rough start to their season, entering at 1-6 so far. In fact theyve gone just 3-68 going back to the 2010-2011 season.

In his second stint as head coach at South Newton, Michael Hall is trying to resurrect his once-found success, having led Rebel teams to 258 victories and three sectional titles.

Balanced scoring was the key Friday, as the Comets jumped on South Newton early. Caston scored 12 unanswered points to start the game and never looked back, finishing with a 55-38 victory.

Quentin Douglass got things started with a 3 followed by consecutive stickbacks by juniors Jake Kingery and Alex Howdeshell. The surge culminated with another 3 by freshman Eli Douglass. A Howdeshell jumper gave Caston a 16-4 lead, but Trever Lowe scored on a steal and layup as time expired to draw the Rebels to within 10 after one.

Junior Dustin Offenberger drilled a 3 to start the second, adding to his four first-quarter points. After a 5-0 run by South Newton junior Levi Hall, Caston proceeded to go on a 10-0 run to close out the half. Quentin Douglass and Offenberger scored on back-to-back three-point plays to give Caston a 29-13 lead at halftime.

Despite a recent slump from long-range, Offenberger has been a key part of Castons new inside threat.

Ive been trying to attack the rim more, he said. Coach Howell has been telling me to take it to the rim, and be strong with the ball.

The start of the third period saw the Rebels make their last stand and quite possibly gave them a glimpse of the future. Six-foot-5 sophomore Jarrett Hammell ignited South Newton by hitting a jumper from the wing followed by two more buckets to draw the deficit to nine with 4:22 to play. He led South Newton with 15 points in the game. Eli Douglass answered the brief run with a 3 followed by two baskets by Brayton Jellison.

BBK: Comets, Rockets to battle Saturday

Newman's boys basketball team is facing a tall task, both literally and figuratively, on Saturday night.

The Comets (17-0) will venture out of conference play to tangle with Rockridge (16-0) in the marquee game of the Manny's Pizza Shootout. Tipoff is slated for 7 p.m., and is the last of seven games to be played that day at Mount Carroll Middle School.

The Rockets are the unanimous No. 1 team in the latest Associated Press Class 2A poll, while the Comets check in at No. 4.

"This will be a great measuring stick for us," Newman coach Ray Sharp said. "Sometimes we tend to get a little stagnant in practice, and having a game like this coming up is great motivation to keep improving. We have some lofty goals we want to accomplish, and if we are to do that, we'll see a team like Rockridge in the supersectional."

Sharp has scouted Rockridge three times this season, including Jan. 4 at the Galesburg Shootout. The Rockets knocked off Rockford East 63-60 that night.

"Their five starters are all really, really good," Sharp said. "They can all hurt you in a lot of ways."

Leading the way for the Rockets is 6-foot-8 senior center Ethan Happ, a Wisconsin recruit. He averages 31 points and 13 rebounds per game.

"He has the ball skills of a guard, but he can score down low," Sharp said. "When they feed the ball into him, we'll have to double down, and that's going to put a lot of pressure on our other players. We need to play great team defense."

Rockridge's second option is Brian Heath, a 6-4 junior wing who averages 23 points and eight boards a game.

"He's just so athletic," Sharp said. "He can dunk the ball any way you want it, but there's more to his game than that."

Emmitt Clark (1)

Ukiah Daily Journal

Saturday evening the Mendocino Colleges Eagles Men's Basketball team hosted the Contra Costa Comets in a Bay Valley Conference matchup. The Eagles were coming off a big win at home on Thursday over Solano College, the deciding score coming on a buzzer-beating shot at the end of the game by Stacey Butler to give the Eagles a 58-57 win.

It was the Eagles' first win in conference play after opening with three loses. They hoped to make it back-to-back wins by beating Contra Costa who came in to the game with a 2-1 record in BVC play.

The game, a close one throughout, ultimately became a tale of two halves. The Eagles led early. Contra Costa to took a lead four minutes into the half, holding it until the Eagles tied the game a mid-half and took a lead for one possession before the Comets retook the lead and held it for the remainder of the half, leading 39-34 at half.

The Eagles were sticking to their remodeled, deliberate style of play, slowing the pace of the game down. Contra Costa continued to lead in the early going of the second half, the lead reaching its high point 3 minutes into the half, the Comets up by 8 at 47-39.

But the Eagles finally caught up with an 8-0 run to tie the game 47 all. Contra went back ahead for one possession, but the Eagles quickly retied the game and then went ahead on an Emmitt Clark three two possessions later. It was a lead they would not relinquish the rest of the game, although there was high drama at the end when the Comets closed to within 2 in the games final seconds. But the Eagles held on to claim a 66-64 win.

The Eagles got off to a good start in the game with Nate Henry knocking down a three on the Eagles' first possession of the game. A couple possessions later Alfred "Justice" Thomas IV hit a banker to give Mendocino a 5-2 lead. At the 16-minute mark, the Comets tied the game 5-5. They then went on a 6-0 run to 11-5 lead. Henry drove the base line for a slick reverse layup, with the Eagles calling a timeout with 13:45 to play in the half, down 11-7.

After the timeout the Eagles scored on their next two possessions, with Henry getting fouled on a drive and converting both free throws. On their next possession, Thomas drove for a layup. Contra Costa called a timeout.
