JioChat is a WhatsApp clone from the maker of the popular Zoom knockoff – Android Police

Indias biggest telecom operator Reliance Jio got richer by billions of dollars in the last couple of months with funds coming from left, right, and center. But it seems that instead of finding some good use for all that cash on hand, the companys been busy cloning popular apps to offer its own alternatives. Last week, JioMeet was called out for being a Zoom rip-off, and now Jio is back with JioChat, which looks like a photocopy of WhatsApp.

JioChat isnt a new app under Jios massive portfolio; in fact, its been around since the early days of the carrier. But it only recently got a major facelift that brought a host of visual changes making it look brazenly similar to WhatsApp. While JioMeet was a picture-perfect copy of Zoom, the redesigned JioChat app is a little more forgiving it only mirrors the tabbed home screen and the unmistakable green shade of WhatsApp.

As compared side-by-side in the images above, the top menu tabs look basically identical on both apps, including the camera icon and the app name towards the left along with the ellipsis dropdown menu on the right. Jios version also has an extra Channels tab that lists a bunch of branded accounts for its users to follow. The green color palette, on the other hand, is just the default theme option (changed from blue in previous app versions), which you can tweak from the apps settings menu.

The investment spree we were talking about earlier was, in fact, kicked off by Facebook, which happens to own the messaging platform WhatsApp. The social media giant invested $5.7 billion in Jio back in April for close to a 10-percent stake in the carriers various businesses. Despite that, accusing Facebook of "allowing" or having a role to play in Jios latest cloning job is a little far-fetched. Doing so would only sabotage its own uber-popular global messaging service for a relatively small-time local alternative.

Invasive ticks are spreading without any males – Futurity: Research News

The invasive population of Asian longhorned ticks in the United States likely began with three or more self-cloning females from northeastern Asia, according to a new study.

Asian longhorned ticks outside the US can carry debilitating diseases. In the US and elsewhere they can threaten livestock and pets. The new study in the journal Zoonoses and Public Health sheds new light on the origin of these ticks and how they are spreading across the country.

While additional samples from the ticks native range are needed to pinpoint more exactly the source of the US introduction, our data suggest that they came from one or more locations in northeastern Asiaeither through a single introduction of at least three ticks or as multiple introductions from different populations, says lead author Andrea M. Egizi, a visiting professor in the entomology department at Rutgers University-New Brunswick and a research scientist with the Monmouth County Tick-borne Diseases Laboratory that the Rutgers Center for Vector Biology hosts.

In 2017, the Rutgers Center for Vector Biology and other researchers detected an infestation of the Asian longhorned tick (Haemaphysalis longicornis), which is native to East Asia, in New Jersey. It was the first time established populations of this species had been detected in the US. Subsequent investigations found the tick to be widespread in the eastern US. Researchers discovered it has been present in New Jersey since at least 2013.

Although this species transmits serious illnesses to people and animals in other countries, experts dont know whether the tick populations in the United States will make people sick, according to the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

The species has two forms: one with males and females, and one with self-cloning females that lay eggs without needing to mate, a process called parthenogenesis. The self-cloning form, free from the need to look for mates, is especially likely to thrive and spread. A single female can establish a fast-growing population. This type entered Australia and New Zealand in the early 1900s, and now causes significant losses in the cattle industry.

The researchers enlisted about 25 collaborators at 20 institutions to get samples of Asian longhorned ticks across the US and internationally, and used gene sequencing to detect genetic similarities and differences among various populations.

Their findings indicate that at least three individual ticks, from self-cloning populations, were brought to the United States, which explains why all adult Asian longhorned ticks found in the US so far have been female. Overall, US ticks are more likely to have come from an East Asian country (or countries) than from Australia and New Zealand.

As part of the study, the US Department of Agriculture Animal and Plant Health Inspection Service, Veterinary Services found evidence that these ticks traveled within the United States on wildlife as well as through the transport of pets or livestock.

One thing we uncovered is the ease with which pets, especially dogs, can accidentally help ticks cross international borders and state lines, says senior author Dina M. Fonseca, a professor and director of the Center for Vector Biology.

Many countries require dogs to be treated for ticks and other parasites before entering the country, but the United States does not. We urge greater awareness of this issue to prevent future exotic tick introductions.

Multiplying the Bounty: Cloning Free Plants | MOTHER EARTH NEWS – Mother Earth News

Several weeks ago, when it became clear that we would not be able to have monthly garden club meetings, I began a podcast about gardening in St. Johns. I also put together short videos as I was doing things around my garden and put them on TikTok, as well as posting to our Garden Club Facebook page. One thing I had several people asking me about was how to take cuttings and turn them into new plants.

Many plants can be cloned through taking softwood stem cuttings. I've used Wisteria for this blog post, but I've done grapes, Rose of Sharon, roses, hydrangea, and many more. If you want to know if you can propagate your plants from softwood stem cuttings, do a general web search. Most deciduous shrubs can be copied this way.

In St. Johns and the surrounding area, maintaining moisture while cuttings take root is the hardest part, so preparing your rooting area should take place before you go to cutting stems off of plants.

Fill a pot with some soilless mix. When you are going to take cuttings, rooting them in soilless mix is much easier and more successful than it would be to try to root them in heavy soil. It is easier to water and is more consistent.

When I water potting "soil" for the first time, I always overwater, making sure water runs all the way through and out the holes in the bottom of the pot. Northern Arizona in incredibly arid, with "humid" days being somewhere around 25-30% humidity. Extra water will drain out of the pot very quickly.

Knowing when to take cuttings, and how to take them and prepare them to root is the first step. Most cuttings should be taken from soft wood, before the bark has hardened.

The cuttings themselves should only be about 6" long, at a maximum, and all but the top couple leaves should be cut off. This not only helps the cutting to send out roots rather than sending energy to the leaves, but it also helps the cutting to lose less water through respiration out of the leaves.

**Note** This next part can be done with or without rooting hormone. I have had less than 60% success with wisteria in the past without rooting hormone, so I did use it for this round.

Once you have your stem cuttings (notice how they are still somewhat green, rather than covered with bark), dip them in rooting hormone. Shake off the excess powder.

Whether or not you used rooting hormone, it is best at this point to poke holes in the soil with a stick or something, about 4" deep. The potting soil will rub off the hormone if you used it, or can plug the phloem at the bottom of the cutting if you didn't use it, so it is best not to use the cuttings and press them right into the soil. Blocking the phloem, or the little channels water runs up the stem through, will cut down your success rate. Just poke a hole with a pencil or small stick, set the cutting in it, firm the soil around the cutting, and then continue with all the rest of the cuttings.

In a pot this size, about 8 inches in diameter, you can place 10 or so cuttings. Once the soil is firmed up around each of the cuttings, water well, allowing water to run through the bottom of the pot. This pushes out air from around the cuttings, and will allow the stems to be in good contact with the potting soil.

Because we are in this arid area, I always set my watered pot in a seedling tray to allow a small amount of water to sit to increase the humidity immediately around the pot. Then cover the pot with a big trash bag or other plastic cover, making sure the plastic doesn't touch the leaves (more important in more humid areas). In 4-6 weeks, the cuttings should have roots strong enough to allow you to transplant each new baby plant into its own pot or directly in the ground where it will be growing.

Make sure you water well, until the plant recovers from the shock of transplanting, and then enjoy your new babies as they grow!

It’s Time to Rethink How You Handle Cloning Out Distractions – Fstoppers

Whether youve worked with Photoshop for years, or are new to the program and want an updated approach to cloning, healing, and editing out distractions and issues, theres been a number of updates that have challenged the old paradigm of editing in these situations. Want to know the new approach you should be using?

When I got started with Photoshop, and had to deal with removing an element of an image, Id reach for either the clone stamp or healing brush tool. Both were fine, but required a good sense of how to rebuild the areas, if you were removing a sizable chunk of the photo. For this next section, when I refer to cloning, you can consider healing and cloning to both run into the same issues, at least to some extent.

Beyond just size, theres a number of complicating factors that can make these tools more difficult to use than necessary. Consider an object against a pattern background, where youll have to pay attention to matching the orientation and periodicity of the pattern itself, rather than just cloning over it with a random sample. Another example is when cloning up against the border of two different objects, especially where theres a defined edge. Working near that edge with a healing brush can result in a blurry mess, instead of a clean replacement.

To work around these challenges, Photoshop has added a number of tools that I dont think get enough attention for this part of the workflow. Furthermore, there are a number of optimizations to how you work with the existing tools that can help address these issues.

The first change Id recommend making is altering how you approach editing out a distraction in the first place. Instead of reaching for a brush of any type or the patch tool, grab the lasso tool. Combined with content aware fill, I find it much easier to make selections quickly, hit my reassigned shortcut for fill (faster than Edit> Fill), and end up with a great looking result for basic adjustments.

I like this better than the brush approach because of how well it leads into making adjustments to the area being fixed. If I need to end up selecting more of a region, like if theres a color cast spilling onto the background, its easy to add to the selection. If Im removing too much, just by holding Alt, I can quickly remove something from the selection. In the very rare cases where Photoshop isnt automatically selecting a good patch to fill with, its easy to jump into the dedicated Content Aware Fill dialog, as your selection is already set up.

This approach isnt just good for its versatility, but also because it is very low effort. Draw a sloppy circle around what you want gone and it vanishes. Content Aware Fill seems to do a remarkable job of leaving things alone that dont need to be removed, even if its in the active selection, unlike when you draw outside the area with the spot healing brush.

Furthermore, Photoshop offers a ton of options for making an easy, effective selection, making this approach even easier. A great example of this is when working with a panorama. After stitching, you can end up with small gaps around the edges of the frame, where the stitch hasnt resulted in a perfectly rectangular image. To fill these in with a brush-based approach would require a detailed examination of the edges of the frame and painstaking work to brush in only the necessary regions. Instead, by selecting all the content on the layer, inverting the selection, and expanding it by a few pixels, you can quickly fill all these gaps automatically. Ive even loaded that process into an action, taking what would have been minutes of work into about 5 seconds and 2 clicks.

To sum it up, when working with an easy, or even intermediate issue, Ive left the myriad healing and cloning brushes in the toolbar, instead relying on sloppy selections and Content Aware fill via both the fill menu and dedicated dialog. Its saved a lot of effort, and can easily be stepped up to deal with more difficult cases.

Unfortunately, Content Awares AI isnt at Skynet levels just yet, For some areas, its still necessary to go in and manually clone out the region. This is most noticeable in the cases I mentioned earlier in the article, with regular patterns and some literal edge cases. Here, however, I still dont leave the selection tools behind.

Making a selection before working with cloning tools can be one of the best ways to refine your approach. One of the easiest examples of this is when working with something that comes up to an edge of another object. In these three shots, you can see the initial issue, the selection, and the finished product. By going in with just the regular clone stamp, you can build in some margin around that white pillar, while still keeping a very clean edge on the object. Once thats done, you can then use any tool, like the healing brush, to go in and finish the job, as well as refine the transition.

Trying to mirror that rounded edge with a single brush stroke is way more difficult than it needs to be. Setting up the selection ahead of time functions a bit like the bumper guards in bowling, where even a mistake doesnt ruin your attempt.

Setting up this perimeteralso leads into my next bit of advice, which is dont be afraid of the clone stamp. While the initial strokes can look worse than using the healing brush or spot healing brush, I find that for larger areas, you can never get the healing brush to look just right without first removing the offending object via another method. Healing over a large area can just result in a smudgy mess, often with color artifacts from the removed object. Instead, give a couple swipes of the clone stamp to at least get the area into a more neutral starting position, then refine with the healing tools if necessary.

One last thing to remember is the clone source panel. If youre working with an offset pattern, or dont have a great 1:1 match for cloning, you can use the clone source panel to expand your options. In the panel, you can adjust the rotation of your clone source to better match your subject, increase or decrease the scaling ratio, or even mirror it. By playing around with these settings, you can get a far more convincing blendor even create a usable source out of an otherwise dissimilar area.

None of these features are that new, with content aware fill being around for years already, for example. Instead, the iterative improvements of content aware fill, combined with some new techniques Ive integrated into my workflow, have led me to realize that I hardly even touch the old standards of cloning work anymore. As content aware fill continues to improve, Ive had to do less and less manual refinement. Id suggest you see how it fits into your workflow, as well as understand the cases where it isnt going to be useful, and how to compensate it might just save you quite a bit of time in your next edit!

Thieves cloning ATM cards to steal cash | Local News | times-news.com – Cumberland Times-News

CUMBERLAND Thieves are using stolen debit card information to remove money from the accounts of First Peoples Community Federal Credit Union members, authorities said Thursday.

According to theAllegany County Combined Criminal Investigation Unit, the suspectsare obtaining the information by using skimmers at ATM locations. With that information, cloned cards are produced, which are used to withdraw cash from the victims' accounts through ATMs.

The crimes, which have been occurring over the last several weeks, have most oftenhappened on weekends when the credit union's main lobbies have been closed.

Investigators said anyone who has been a victim of the crime should contact their local law enforcement agency.

Stranger Things Season 4 Hopper Villain Theory – David Harbour’s Character Is Alive, But He Might Be a Villain – Esquire.com

When Season Three of Stranger Things wrapped up, it looked like the Duffer Brothers mightve finally delivered a much-needed, shocking blow to the shows huggable OG cast. In the season finales boss battle, the mysterious Russian machine explodesvaporizing a ton of bad-guy minions, but also, it seemed, Police Chief Jim Hopper too.

The twist ending didnt last for long: When Netflix released a preview of Season Four in March, we saw Hopper alive and well, working away on a Russian railroad. Now, the question is: What the hell is he doing there? Since that teaser debuted, many have speculated that Hopper will break badwell get to that shortlybut David Harbour, who plays the chief in the series, just gave us our best idea of what to expect going forward. In an interview with Deadline, the actor hinted that well see Hopper painted in a bit of a darker palette in the next season.

"Each season we get to see a different side of him, and last season it was sort of wacky," Harbour said. "I loved playing that, [but] now I think he's painted in a bit of a darker palette and he's able to express these really deep things about him that we haven't really known yet. It's been hinted at, but we don't really know."

This content is imported from Twitter. You may be able to find the same content in another format, or you may be able to find more information, at their web site.

Harbours hint backs up what fans have been speculating for months: Hopper will turn on the Hawkins gang and become the villain of Season Fourwhich honestly sounds way more compelling than another slobbering Upside Down beast. As for how Hopper will go from hero to ready to lay the smackdown on Finn and Dustin, fans think itll (what else) be the doing of some classic 80s tropes: Brainwashing or cloning. Reddit user Conor_mc7 theorized the former nearly a year ago:

As for the cloning possibilitywhich would see an alternate version of Hopper become a Ivan Drago-esque powerhouseScreenrant theorized that the Mind Flayer would construct a clone of the detective. That way, the clone could be an on-Earth acolyte for Upside Down villainery, similar to Billys arc in Season Three.

Back in March, while speaking at the Liverpool Comic Con, Harbour told fans that Season Four of Stranger Things would dig deep into Hopper's mysterious past:

It's unclear how 'Vietnam,' 'New York,' and 'Dad' relate to Hopper's imprisonment in Russia, but it's possible that cloning or brainwashing could somehow be rooted in his dark past. And, given Harbour has confirmed that his character will be darker in this season, whether it's via cloning or brainwashing, it seems like Stranger Things is setting up Hopper to be its dark new villain.

Unfortunately, Stranger Things Season Four didn't wrap up filming before the global COVID-19 shutdown, so the releaseoriginally intended for early 2021is up in the air. Though, the writers of Stranger Things just posted a picture of the completed Season Four script, so hopefully production will resume soon.

WindowsFX is a Windows 10 clone Linux distro that you can install up to a Raspberry Pi – Explica

That a Linux distro wants to look a bit like Windows to attract its users is not a new thing.. There are many examples, some as light as those used by desktops like Cinnamon or Mate, and others more intense like what Zorin OS was trying to do.

None had gone as far as the call WindowsFX, name that they probably cant even use anymore. You see, this distro is basically the same as LinuxFX, another name by which it is known, but its latest versions have cloned from wallpaper to the latest Windows 10 icon and recently they started calling it windows.

Until just two days ago, you could enter its official site windowsfx.org. But now both that domain and linuxfx.org redirect to the system page in DistroWatch. For now it is possible to download the latest ISO from the distro May 28 via SourceForge. The ones on DistroWatch are ultra old and completely out of date.

I found out about the existence of this distro a few days ago after watching a video of Eta Prime, a youtuber who tests a lot of software and hardware compatible with Raspberry Pi 4. In his video he highly praised the cloning work they had done and how well it was on a Pi 4.

LinuxFX / WindowsFX, whatever you want to call it, is a Brazilian distro based on Ubuntu 20.04 that uses Cinnamons desktop and fully customizes it to best mimic the Windows 10 desktop.

Icons, menus, background, indicators, etc. Everything looks quite similar, and if you are not someone too tech-savvy, you may not even notice the difference and even think that you are using Windows 10. This can be a great advantage for users who find it difficult to learn to use things that they look very different from what they are used to.

The WindowsFX / LinuxFX Start Menu

If we add to this that it is compatible with the Raspberry Pi 4, an extremely small and extremely cheap PC, there is much benefit to be gained from the combination. The distro brings a series of tools and software that are as easy to use as possible, which although they have icons of proprietary software such as Office, end up launching the open source alternative.

The bad news is that using a word Windows inside your distro name is probably a bad idea for obvious reasons. While they were just LinuxFX and didnt have an alternate domain, they kept going unnoticed.

If the disappearance of its official websites is temporary or the product of some legal problem, it is something that we do not yet know. For now, it is still possible to download the distro, in the future we may not see the name WindowsFX anymore.

Stranger Things Season 4 Theory: The Jim Hopper In Russia Is A CLONE – Screen Rant

Stranger Things season 4 has a lot of questions to answer, among those how Jim Hopper survived the explosion at the end of season 3 and how he ended up in Russia. As the Duffer Brothers have been keeping all details about season 4 a secret, fans of the series have been coming up with all types of theories, among those one that suggests the Hopper in Russia is actually a clone. Season 3 of Stranger Things left viewers wondering if Hopper was really dead, who the American prisoner is, and what will happen with Eleven now that her powers are gone and she moved out of Hawkins with the Byers.

With production of Stranger Things season 4 on hold due to the coronavirus pandemic, plot details will continue to be a mystery for a while, but Netflix and the team behind the series decided to treat their fansand released a teaserwith a big revelation on Valentines Day: Hopper is alive, and hes being held prisoner in Russia. Of course, the biggest questions are now about how Hopper survived and how he became the American prisoner (supposing theres only one), and fans have come up with all types of explanations.

Related: Stranger Things' Hopper Reveal Highlights The Show's Big Problems

One of those suggests the Hopper seen being forced to work in a chain gang in Russia is not the Hopper that viewers know so well, but a clone. The theory can be supported by some details from the previous seasons of Stranger Things, as well as by some of the series (many) influences and the mystery that is the Upside Down and the creatures living in it. Heres how Hopper could be a clone in Stranger Things season 4.

The final episode of Stranger Things season 3 saw the main group and their allies divided into three factions: the Scoops Troop (Dustin, Steve, Robin, and Erica), the Griswold Family (Eleven, Mike, Will, Lucas, Max, Jonathan, and Nancy), and the Bald Eagle (Joyce, Hopper, and Murray). The latter group was in charge of infiltrating the Russian lab located underneath Starcourt Mall, and for that, they had to dress as Russian agents. Once there, Joyce and Hopper got to the part of the lab where the Key was (the machine designed to open gates to the Upside Down), and in order to shut it down, they had two turn two keys at the same time, but they were interrupted by Grigori (also known as the Russian Terminator). Hopper and Grigori fought near the machine, with Hopper pushing Grigori into the device, killing him instantly but also causing the Key to malfunction and trap him between the semi-open gate and a ray of energy. With seemingly no way out, he signaled Joyce to turn the keys, even if that meant he would die. Joyce did so and the machine exploded, killing those near it. Hoppers body (or what would have been left of it) was never found, which made fans wonder if he could have survived somehow.

Now that its confirmed that Hopper is alive, fans have come up with different explanations on how he survived. One of the most popular ones explains that, when Joyce closed her eyes when turning the keys and the screen went black, thats when Hopper made one final move to save himself. When the screen went back to the scene, right before the Key exploded, Hopper was not where he was supposed to, which has made fans believe Hopper found a way to escape at the last second. Its possible that the Russians learned a few lessons from their previous failed attempts to open gates and added a safe zone in case the Key malfunctioned again. With that in mind, Hopper could have found the ladder that leads to a safe area or the shockwave of the explosion tossed him away, falling into that zone. As he was wearing a Russian uniform, he might have been found by them and believed to be part of their team, which is how he ended up on the other side of the world.

Another well-known theory suggests the explosion sent Hopper through the gate and into the Upside Down, where he was trapped for a while. Given that everything about the Upside Down continues to be a mystery, it could have served as a portal of sorts that took Hopper to Russia and as the post-credits scene of season 3s finale revealed that the Russians have their own Demogorgon, that means they have successfully opened at least one gate, which could have been Hoppers ticket out of the other dimension.

Related: Stranger Things Theory: The Demogorgon Is Key To Hopper's Return

Stranger Things has relied a lot on many horror and sci-fi tropes, but it has also had its own twists. Season 4s could be that the Hopper being kept prisoner in Russia is not the real one, but a clone. The big question, then, would be how and whyhe was cloned but it might not be the Russians doing. In season 3, viewers followed Billy Hargroves transformation after his encounter with the Mind Flayer. Billy was taken to the Upside Down, where he came across with a clone of himself after the Mind Flayer planted a part of itself inside him (as it did with Will in season 2, but in a much deeper level). After that, Billy was under the control of the monster, which brought significant changes in him, both physical and behavioral.

Taking Will and Billys cases as examples, and following the aforementioned theory of Hopper being thrown into the Upside Down during the explosion, the Hopper in Russia could be a clone created by the Mind Flayer. The purpose of a Hopper clone in this case would be to continue with the monsters plans of taking over this dimension, more so after its past attempts have failed because of Elevens intervention. Cloning Hopper specifically would also help the Mind Flayer attract Eleven, given the strong bond between them, allowing it to get its revenge after all those times Eleven got in the way. The Mind Flayer has been getting stronger, and it wouldnt be surprising if it perfected its plan following its most recent defeat, including now the use of a clone.

However, if Hopper survived thanks to a safe zone in the lab and was mistaken by a Russian scientist and taken to Russia, then the purpose of a Jim Hopper clone would be different. Hopper knows too much about Hawkins Lab, the Upside Down, the monsters, and the Russians and the Russians are still experimenting on the other dimension and the creatures living in it. Cloning Hopper would not only help them get the information they need and use him however they need, but also help them get their hands on Eleven, whose powers would be very useful to them. The Russian guards line of not the American could then refer to the scientists keeping Hopper alive to clone him, so he couldnt be the Demogorgons dinner.

Stranger Things is heavily influenced by many sci-fi and horror films from the 1980s, among those classics like John Carpenters The Thing and the Star Wars films. The Thing has already been referenced in Stranger Things a poster can be spotted at Mikes basement and Lucas mentioned it when explaining why he liked New Coke but its influence in terms of narrative and more hasnt really been felt yet. Viewers were quick to point out how the season 4 teaser had big The Thing vibes: set in a snowy, isolated place, where a dangerous and mysterious creature is being kept (in this case, the Demogorgon). Some even found some similarities between the strange noise/scream heard at the end of the teaser and the sound the creature from The Thing made.

Related: How The Thing's Iconic Poster Was Made (In Just 24 Hours)

Carpenters film followed a group of American researchers in Antarctica who came across with a parasitic extraterrestrial life-form that assimilated and imitated other organisms. The creature began to attack the group and pose as some of them, making them paranoid as they could no longer trust each other, as it was very difficult to know if the person next to them was the real one or the thing. Stranger Things could be following the steps of The Thing in season 4 and bring clones to the mix, with Hopper being the chosen one to introduce this concept in the series, causing (even more) conflict and paranoia among the group.

Of course, theres also Star Wars, which also has its own clones. They were genetically engineered with the purpose of killing and dying to defend their makers. Clones in Star Wars had tragic lives, as all they knew was the battlefield and werent really treated like human beings. Though it appears that all clones were gone by the time the original trilogy begins, the sequels went back to the concept of cloning by revealing Palpatine had cloned himself. The Star Wars universe is in constant change, but that doesnt mean the Duffer Brothers cant borrow the idea, even if it wasnt really present in theStar Wars films from the 1980s. Some fans have found similarities between Hopper and Han Solos arc, and Star Wars: The Empire Strikes Back is among the many influences for Stranger Things season 4, so it wouldnt be surprising if they take these influences beyond the iconic 1980 film.

As mentioned above, the consequences of a Hopper clonewould depend on who created him and with what purpose. If its the Mind Flayers doing, it would mean that the groups encounters with it are far from over, and that the creature has once more evolved and even worse, it now has at least one more gate from which it can begin to take over this dimension. If the Hopper clone is created by the Russians, the bad guys could get easy access to very important information about Hawkins, the lab, and its residents, especially those the Russian scientists came across with. Both scenarios would represent a big threat to Eleven, as both can be used as bait: the Mind Flayer wants revenge, and Eleven can easily fall when seeing the Hopper clone, and the Russians could really use her powers in their experiments.

Of course, some of the biggest questions are if and how people would realize that theyre not dealing with the real Hopper. Going back to The Thing, cinematographer Dean Cundey hasteased that he added a subtle illumination to the eyes of uninfected characters, a hint for viewers to know who was real and who was a clone. Stranger Things season 4 could have its own subtle hint, which only those truly observant and those who know Hopper very well would notice. As for the real one, he could be either trapped in the Upside Down or being kept prisoner by the Russians, though under heavier surveillance than the rest. A Hopper clone would add more conflict and drama to Stranger Things, and as its still unknown when season 4 will be released, fans will surely continue trying to find explanations to some of the series biggest mysteries.

Rick and Morty theories: Star Trek reference reveals neither Beth is a clone in the finale – Express

Long term Rick and Morty viewers were introduced to a second version of Ricks (played by Justin Roiland) daughter in the last episode of season four. Now fans of the Adult Swim cartoon have speculated the true identity of Space Beth (Sarah Chalke) may not be what she appears to be.

After more than two years of hype, the fourth season of Rick and Morty finally continued the story of the unhinged inventor and his hapless sidekick.

Although the second half got off to a rocky start, many fans were hailing the final episodes of season four as some of co-creators Justin Roiland and Dan Harmons best adventures yet.

During one of the shows most satisfying finales, Star Mort: Rickturn of the Jerri, fans were treated to the return of recurring villain Tammy (Cassie Steele) and an upgraded Birdperson, now going by Phoenixperson (Dan Harmon).

Audiences were also given the answers to one of the shows biggest questions from the conclusion of season three.

Ricks daughter Beth had indeed decided to clone herself, with one version of Ricks daughter heading to space to lead the rebellion against the Galactic Federation.

Episode tens final moments delivered one of the shows darkest moments yet by confirming Rick had no idea which of his daughters was real and which was the clone.

The final scene brings back Mortys Mind Blowers, glass capsules which house erased memories of the duo's bleakest memories theyd prefer to forget.

Rick plugs one in to recall Beths cloning process, during which he turns his back on the two pods as they shuffled so he couldnt know the true identity of his daughter.

Rather than being cloned, a transporter malfunction splits Kirk into two equally cognitive beings, one representing his good yet indecisive side, the other his evil and impulsive half.

This fan continued by suggesting Beth may have undergone a similar process during Ricks cloning procedure at the end of the episode.

They added: What if Rick didnt make a clone of Beth. Instead he split her into two halves representing two different sides of Beth. Both equally her but not a clone.

Space Beth represents her bad-a** self. One wanting adventure. self loathing, the one that resembles her Dads personality, intelligence and quick thinking. Who doesn't need Jerry or anyone.

Star Wars Lando Calrissian was very different in the early drafts – digitalspy.com

We all know Star Wars' Lando Calrissian as a suave rogue with an enormous amount of charm and charisma. He's been a smuggler, gambler and card sharp, and generally acts out of his own self interest, though he did end up fighting for the rebels.

But there's one part of his backstory that was once very different. Lando was originally going to be a clone.

After the enormous success of A New Hope, Lucas was burnt out. He was also dealing with building Lucasfilm and figuring out how he was going to finance the sequel himself to stop Fox interfering. So, he decided to ask author Leigh Brackett, known as the Queen of Space Opera, to write the sequel.

Albert L. OrtegaGetty Images

She was an experienced screenwriter and had worked on films like The Big Sleep and Rio Bravo. In a story conference with Brackett in 1977, Lucas outlined his initial ideas for Star Wars II.

It was at this point that he brought up a new character: an old friend of Han who is a slick, charming con man, and a little like James Bond. Lucas went to great lengths to describe how Lando could be a clone.

"Someone who could look human but not really be human. He's possibly a clone... a Rudolph Valentino character[who's] almost too perfect looking. We assume that in the cloning process, they manipulated genes and improved on the original."

Lando isn't just any clone, though. His clan is one of the ruling classes in a world where there are planets of clones with around 700 countries. This wasn't even Lucas' most shocking idea: he wanted to establish that Lando's "clan were slightly weird in their own way... and were partly responsible for the [Clone] War[s]".

This was a different version of the Clone Wars we know. In Attack of the Clones, the war is established as a battle between the Galactic Republic and the Separatists. The clones are nothing more than a weapon used by the Republic against the Separatists' battle droids.

Lucas also considered making Leia distrust Lando because he is a clone and even refer to him in a disdainful manner. We can only guess that this could be because of an instinctive dislike of someone who seems human but isn't.

But it could also be linked to the fact that certain clones had some involvement in the start of the war. His initial plan was to establish Lando as a clone and then show him coming across his clan in a later film.

Brackett developed Lucas' initial ideas about Lando as a clone, and made a few of her own changes. In her script, most of Lando's clan have been killed in the Clone Wars. So Lucas' idea that he could meet up with clones like him, later on, was dropped.

Lando is first mentioned in Brackett's script when Han and Leia are fleeing from the Imperial fleet and need a safe refuge. Han thinks they can find it with his old friend. He tells Leia that Lando's family were refugees from the Clone Wars. Lando now lives on Hoth and has become a surrogate son of Chief Bahiri, the leader of the native population.

We can see many of Lucas' ideas in the story. Lando is described as "so handsome that, like Rudolph Valentino, he seems not quite real" and Leia is immediately suspicious of him because he is a clone.

Brackett then goes further. She shows that Leia's distrust increases after C-3PO is damaged and Lando states that the workshops can only repair him in a week. Lando senses Leia's wariness. He realises that she's always watching him. So he explains his backstory: he is a clone from the noble Ashardi family.

"My great-grandfather wanted many sons and he produced them from the cells of his own body. His sister, a remarkable woman, produced many daughters by the same means. Thus we keep the blood pure."

Lucas did, of course, create Jango Fett later on and used the idea of one man producing hundreds of clones in a very different way.

In Brackett's script, few of Lando's clan survive the Clone Wars, despite their numbers. Those who do, try to stay under the radar. This could tie into Lucas' idea that Lando's clan were partly responsible for the war. In one of the most moving parts of the story, Lando expresses how lonely he is now that all the faces on the street aren't the same as his own.

"It didn't seem strange to us to see our own faces endlessly repeated in the streets of our cities. It gave us a sense of oneness, of belonging. Now, when every face is new and different I feel truly alone."

But seconds after this speech, Lando betrays Han and Leia to Darth Vader. His surrogate father, Bahiri, tries to talk to his son about the things he's doing and ends up dying in a confrontation with Vader's troops. Lando is completely devastated. Once more, he's lost someone he loves. Lando switches sides and joins the rebels.

Brackett died of cancer soon after she sent Lucas a first draft. He thought it strayed too far from his initial ideas. Lucas ended up writing the next draft himself and then hired screenwriter Lawrence Kasdan. This meant that Lucas dropped some of his earlier plans.

If Brackett had the chance to write further drafts, we may have had Lando as a clone in the first sequel to Star Wars, and who knows what that would have meant for Donald Glover's fabulous portrayal in Solo, or Billy Dee Williams reprising the role in The Rise of Skywalker?

Marbled crayfish that reproduces by cloning added to Michigan’s prohibited species list – Detroit Free Press

Associated Press Published 10:16 a.m. ET May 18, 2020

LANSING, Mich. A crayfish that reproduces by cloning has been added to Michigan's prohibited species list.

All known specimens of marbled crayfish are genetically identical females that can produce up to 700 eggs per reproductive cycle without the need for fertilization, according to the state Department of Natural Resources.

The species' reproductive capacity and aggressive nature may allow them to dominate lakes, ponds and rivers quickly.

In captivity, marbled crayfish can exhibit a range of colors including blue or red. Most specimens found in the wild are olive to brown in color.(Photo: Photo courtesy of Mari-Liis Komets)

They have not been detected in the wild in Michigan, but the state said a single marbled crayfish that escapes captivity or is released into open water could have the potential of initiating an entire population. They feed on plants, snails and amphibians, limiting food sources for fish and other aquatic species.

Marbled crayfish, also known as virgin crayfish, are popular in the aquarium trade. They range from 4 to 5 inches long, have slender claws and feature a marbled coloration pattern on their backs.

As part of Michigan's prohibited species list, they cannot be owned, introduced, imported, traded, sold or offered for sale as a live organism in Michigan, with few exceptions. Also, they shouldn't be flushed down the toilet.

"Disposing of marbled crayfish by releasing them into the wild should not be considered," said Lucas Nathan, DNR aquatic invasive species coordinator. "Their ability to move across land also increases their risk of spread."

The species' addition to the list aligns Michigan with the Conference of Great Lakes and St. Lawrence Governors and Premiers' list of "least wanted" aquatic invasive species that pose a serious threat to the environment and economy in the Great Lakes-St. Lawrence River region.

Animal Crossing: New Horizons – How To Clone Any Item In The Game – TheGamer

YouTuber BLAINES has discovered a method to duplicate any item in Animal Crossing: New Horizon sans bugs, fish, and similar items.

For players who want to speed up their Animal Crossing: New Horizons progression and dont mind using hacks, YouTuber BLAINES has discovered a method to duplicate any item in New Horizon sans bugs, fish, and similar items.

The hack utilizes the postbox glitch and requires having three users on your island and two Joy-Cons, so Switch Lite users might want to find another guide for duplicating items. To start BLAINESs method, make or use a second and tertiary player account so that there are three avatars on your New Horizons island.

Related: Animal Crossing: 15 Tips For Using Nook Miles

Send a letter to the secondary player from your primary account and attach the item you want to clone. This is where the two Joy-Cons come into play; control your primary character with one Joy-Con and your secondary with the other.

Go to the Call Resident app on your phone and call your secondary character. Once youve finished the initial calibration to get both characters moving independently, make the secondary character the leader and enter any building. This will refresh the secondary characters postbox.

Leave the building and collect the letter from the secondary characters postbox. Dont open the package yet! Make your primary character the leader, open up menus with the minus button and select the option to invite more residents to the game. This option only shows up with three or more users on the island, so make sure you have a tertiary character even if you dont use them in the course of this hack.

Invite the secondary character again. After the game reloads, change your leader back to the secondary character and wait for the autosave icon to pop up in the top right corner of the screen. Make sure youre not in your menus while waiting, as autosave doesnt work when the menus are open.

Once the autosave icon appears, hurry and claim the duplications from the secondary characters postbox because they can only be accessed within a time limit of about five minutes.

To continue duplicating, change your leader back to the primary character, go to menus to invite the secondary character to the game once more, and repeat as needed.

Happy cloning!

A ‘Star Wars’ Fan Explained How the Palpatine Clone Was Teased Long Before ‘The Rise of Skywalker’ – Esquire

You may have had a question or two (or fifty) after watching Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker. The significance of lightsaber colors, where Babu Frik ranked on a cuteness scale from one to Baby Yoda, and oh, yeahhow the hell Emperor Palpatine came back from the dead to torment Rey, who was his granddaughter, apparently.

Star Wars gave a very Westworld answer: He was a clone! Makes total sense. And Reys father, too, was a Palpatine clone, only the job was botched. There are some Star Wars novelizations that give some more details on this, but what about the movies? This week, a Reddit user went on a deep dive of the Skywalker Saga, hunting for any kind of precedence the films couldve set for a Palpatine clone.

Turns out there are a handful of easter eggs buried throughout the series, dating all the way back to Episode III: Revenge of the Sith. Check out the full breakdown if you want to see every nod the films make, but here are some highlights.

Remember those creepy baby Snokes that were bred on the Sith planet Exegol? The Reddit user says that proves that the Sith had cloning technology:

Theres a generous reading of Palpatines Look what you have made quip in The Rise of Skywalker:

The user even found a line in Episode III that could be interpreted as a prophecy for Palpatines eventual cloning:

Feeling good with those explanations? Cool. We have another Palp-related investigation for you.

Coronavirus clone from Switzerland goes ‘viral’ – Innovation Origins

Virology and veterinary bacteriology researchers at the Swiss University of Bern have succeeded in cloning the novel SARS CoV-2 coronavirus. The scientists were able to recreate the coronavirus from synthetic DNA (deoxyribonucleic acid) in the high-security laboratory of the Institute of Virology and Immunology (IVI) of the Federal Food Safety and Veterinary Office (FSVO) in Mittelhusern and at the Vetsuisse Faculty of the University of Bern. Corona samples can now be tested worldwide with these clones. This will also help discover drugs that will combat the viral disease and in the development of vaccines.

Viruses, like parasites, depend on a host cell in order to reproduce. The viruses invade the bodys cells and reprogram them so that they produce new viruses. These are then spread further, for instance through infection from droplets. The scientists in Bern have now reproduced segments of the coronavirus genome from synthetic DNA. These were then introduced into yeast cells. There they were reassembled by means of what is referred to as transformation-associated recombination (TAR) cloning.

This resulted in a yeast artificial chromosome (YAC) on which the genetic information of the virus was stored. In the next step, infectious RNA was reproduced in vitro without yeast cells. This was done with the help of T7 RNA polymerase. This RNA was introduced into animal cells, where new, synthetic coronaviruses were then replicated. As in clones. And all this was accomplished in record time. We replicated the virus within the space of a week,, notes Professor Volker Thiel from the Institute of Virology and Immunology (IVI).

The scientists report that the system of yeast cells was developed in Bern and has now proved its worth for the first time during an epidemic. We have optimized this system to allow us to clone coronaviruses and other viruses quickly, explains Prof. Jrg Jores from the Institute of Veterinary Bacteriology at the University of Bern. This method enables a rapid response to novel and fast-spreading viruses and their properties in real-time. In other words, during an outbreak.

The final results of the study were published in the academic journal Nature. This was after the provisional results had already been posted on a preprint server where it underwent scientific discussion is. The researchers state that the synthetic viruses cloned in Bern have enabled a major step forward in the diagnosis of patient samples and the development of new active substances. Viruses are especially difficult to clone because they are smaller than the smallest bacteria and extremely mutable. Our model system that uses yeast cells shows that it is ideally suited for reconstructing coronaviruses and other viruses, Volker Thiel adds.

This method developed by the Swiss researchers will also be suitable in the future for combating other extremely infectious viruses. Moreover, the scientists have already received numerous requests from companies and other researchers to test potential active substances against the SARS-CoV-2 coronavirus at the high-security laboratory.

Semyon Grigoryev, scientist captivated by the dream of cloning woolly mammoths back to life – The Siberian Times

Semyon Grigoryev pictured at his office in Yakutsk. Picture: The Siberian Times

We were devastated to hear that one of Yakutias youngest and most promising scientists, head of the Mammoth Museum in Yakutsk and a dear friend Semyon Grigoryev passed away from a heart attack aged 46.

Semyon Grigoryevs heart stopped beating earlier today. News of his death deeply shocked everyone who knew and worked with him, said a long-term colleague, head of the Mammoth Fauna studies department of the Yakutian Academy of Sciences Albert Protopopov.

Semyon grew up in the Arctic village of Kazachye at the Ust-Yana district of Yakutia, the area where a large number of woolly mammoth fauna animals and mammoths were found, along with an endless number of mammoth tusks, so his deep passion to palaeontology was not surprising.

He grew to become a world famous palaeontologist with finds like the Malolyakhovskiy mammothin 2013 - the first and currently the only mammoth in the world with a fully preserved trunk and samples of soft tissues - which will be forever linked to his name.

Semyon Grigoryev was as hard-working with his field researches and expeditions as he was lucky with finds like the worlds only preserved foal of a Pleistocene era horse discovered inside the Batagai crater, and projects like Russias only World Mammoth Centre in Yakutsk.

He spent weeks wandering around the most remote areas of his native Yakutia in search of new samples of the mammoth fauna, and was always happy to share results of his teams work with media in Russia and abroad.

Semyon Grigoryev was indeed one of the most active popularisers of Yakutia - the worlds coldest permanently inhabited region, almost the size of India - as a territory of breathtaking scientistic discoveries.

Above all, he forged links with foreign scientists and in particular cloning expertProfessor Hwang Woo Suk, from South Korea, in a quest to convert genetic material preserved in theSiberian permafrost into the dream that the mammoth andother extinct species could be restored to this planet.

Dr Hwang Woo Suk said: It is utterly difficult for me to believe and accept the information I received.

My heartfelt thoughts go out to his family in this time of sorrow.

I also wanted to extend my sympathy and condolences to all his team and his international scientific partners as they will also mourn the loss of a great mind.

Dr Semyon will forever be the best permafrost scientist I ever had the chance to work with.

To say he was a larger than life character would be an understatement.

He will always be remembered as a great scientist verified by his many achievements.

My team and I vow to do our best to continue his work and reach our common goal.

I promise to follow the path we started together and I will keep the memories we shared as precious reminders of why we work everyday.

I take comfort in the fact that he is no longer in pain, and as I am sure he found his own place in Heaven.

Thank you D. Semyon, you will be remembered.

Alexei Tikhonov, Director of Zoological Museum at the Saint Petersburg Zoological Institute, Russian Academy of Sciences said: Semyon Grigoryev grew up as a scientist before my eyes.

I went to expeditions and conferences with him. He was not only a colleague of mine, he was a friend.

He was a zoologist who mastered Quaternary Palaeozoology in a short time.

He headed the Mammoth Museum in Yakutsk and managed to establish extensive international relations.

He was a talented scientistic, an organiser and of course a caring, loving father and husband.

Semyon Grigoryev will stay in my memory as a bright, enthusiastic person who undoubtedly belonged to the forefront of Yakutian intelligentsia.

Palaeontologist Sergey Leshchinsky, Tomsk State University said: Today Yakutia and Russia lost an incredible man and a leading scientist.

I am still struggling to find words, but I know that Semyon Grigoryevs legacy will live in our hearts, as will his projects and dreams be continued and fulfilled by his friends and colleagues.

Semyon Grigoryev is survived by his wife,Dr Lena Grigoryeva, leading researcher at International Center for Collective Use Molecular Palaeontology, North-Eastern Federal University, and their two sons.

Chinas scientists accused of playing God by creating monstrous cloned apes and primates with human organs – The Sun

CHINESE scientists have been accused of being real-life Dr Frankensteins who play God by cloning apes and editing the genes of babies.

Some of their work has been dubbed monstrous while other cutting edge research could lead to cures for Parkinson's and Alzheimer's.

4

It's important to note that the US and the UK are not immune from conducting tests on animals and in fact carry out THOUSANDS of experiments on primates every year.

However, China has become the capital of research on apes and monkeys believing that our closest relatives hold the key to understanding brain disorders that destroy lives.

Incredibly, the Institute of Neuroscience (ION) in Shanghai, cloned five infant monkeys last year from an adult macaque who had been genetically-edited.

The result was baby primates intentionally born with a mutation that disrupts their wake-sleep cycle.

By giving the monkeys new drugs to treat their pre-existing brain disorders, the scientists hope to develop treatments for illnesses such as Alzheimer's disease.

It's no wonder the ION has been dubbed the "Cern of primate neurobiology".

The Institute successfully cloned two macaque monkeys in 2018 - a world first giving the experts confidence to push ahead with further experiments.

4

Heaping praise on the research, the Chinese Academy of Sciences said: "The achievement heralds a new era in which China can produce batches of standardised monkey clones, which will serve as animal models in the research of the brain's cognitive functions, early diagnoses and interventions of diseases, as well as research and development of drugs.

While China allows genetic manipulation on animals it has banned the use of gene-editing on humans but that hasn't stopped some of its scientists "playing God" with unborn children.

Scientist He Jiankui, 35, rocked the scientific world when he revealed he had altered the embryos of twin girls in 2018.

In December last year, it was revealed that a third child born to a different mum had also been gene-edited.

The rogue expert said he used a tool called Crispr to disable a gene that allows the AIDS virus to enter cells in a bid to make the children immune from the disease.

But why have such experiments been dubbed monstrous by others within the scientific community?

Experts claim gene-editing in people could "divide humans into subspecies" and can cause mutations, genetic problems and even cancer.

Dr Kiran Musunuru, an expert in this area from the University of Pennsylvania, called the experiment unconscionable an experiment on human beings that is not morally or ethically defensible.

4

Professor Julian Savulescu, of the University of Oxford, said: If true, this experiment is monstrous.

The embryos were healthy. No known diseases. Gene editing itself is experimental and is still associated with off-target mutations, capable of causing genetic problems early and later in life, including the development of cancer.

There are many effective ways to prevent HIV in healthy individuals: for example, protected sex.

Last December, Mr Jiankui was jailed for three years after news of the third child's birth was revealed.

He was convicted of practising medicine without a licence and fined 330,000 by a court in Shenzhen, the Xinhua news agency reported.

One of the most controversial experiments to date was the creation of embryos that were part human and part primate.

Last year, Spaniard Juan Carlos Izpisa Belmonte led a team of Chinese researchers with the end goal of creating monkeys which have entirely human organs such as kidneys or livers.

The organs will then be used for human transplants.

Based in China, the team made the chimeras a single organism with cells from more than one genotype - by injecting human stem cells into a fresh monkey embryo.

Biologist Belmonte previously tried adding human cells to embryos of pigs but the disturbing experiment was not successful.

However, because primates are genetically related to humans, the chances of the new research being successful is much greater.

The scientists also use gene-editing technology to disable certain cell formations in the animals to give the human cells a better chance of thriving.

In the US and other western democracies, such research is banned however in China, experts are allowed to push the boundaries of scientific ethics.

Importantly, no Frankenstein monster has been born as a result of this research... not yet anyway.

Instead, the hybrid embryos are allowed to develop for around two weeks so their progress can be studied.

Mr Belmonte defended his work with the Chinese, saying: History shows us time and time again that, over time, our ethical and moral standards change and mutate, like our DNA, and what yesterday was ethically unacceptable, if this really represents an advance for the progress of humanity, today it is already an essential part of our lives."

A similar experiment involved two piglets who were born with monkey cells in December at the State Key Laboratory of Stem Cell and Reproductive Biology in Beijing.

The so-called 'pig-monkey chimeras' died a week later.

Away from China, one of the most sinister experiments took place at the University of Munich where two monkeys were given transplanted pig hearts.

The poor creatures died after six months in a study which was deemed a success.

WATCH: Thieves break into vehicles parked on driveways as fears over ‘cloned keys’ rise – Basingstoke Gazette

CCTV footage of shameless thieves breaking into vehicles parked on driveways has been shared by Basingstoke residents, stoking concerns that cloned keys are being used by the culprits.

Videos shared with the Gazette show the perpetrators approaching driveways in Vyne Park, Chineham, and brazenly entering parked vehicles.

One Vyne Park resident says she has been sent about nine separate bits of footage depicting similar incidents.

The break-ins took place during the early hours of Saturday morning.

In most cases no damage to the cars has been reported, leading the victims to believe that the culprits are using cloned keys.

It comes after two 2019 BMWs were stolen from neighbouring streets in Bramley last night with police saying some kind of cloning device was believed to have been used.

Jade Underdown, of Vyne Park, says her partners van was broken into during the early hours of Saturday morning, and it seems as though the thieves used a key of their own to gain entry.

Recalling the incident, she told the Gazette: Our vehicle that was broken into was a van, so there was a key used as there was no damage to the van.

In the video footage the guy goes over to the van, uses what looks like a key and just gets in.

The Bramley thefts are believed to have involved electronic keys, with police warning residents to keep their keys in a metal case to protect against cloning.

However, Jade says her partners car uses a traditional key, not an electronic one.

The Vyne Park thefts also differ in that the perpetrators appeared to be targeting items from inside, rather than the vehicles themselves.

Jade says tools were taken from her partners van, while another neighbour had a small amount of cash taken from their vehicle. And again, their was no sign of forced entry.

Someone over the road had their Mercedes broken into and they took a 10 note, Jade added.

The car was broken into but there was no sign of forced entry.

Those two incidents are far from the only ones reported in the area. Jade has spoken to a number of residents who have since shared CCTV footage of similar incidents in the area.

In Vyne Park in general I think Ive got about nine separate bits of footage, she said, so theres quite a few people they have tried to do it to.

The incidents were reported to the police via 101, who told Jade they would be in touch if required.

Hampshire Constabulary has been contacted for a comment.
