CSU Dominguez Hills in Carson wins chemistry grant

California State University, Dominguez Hills in Carson has received a $200,000 grant from the W. M. Keck Foundation to support a unique chemistry lab model aimed at addressing barriers to the sciences for part-time, working students.

For nontraditional students who work or commute long distances to campus, spending hours in a lab each week can be daunting and is often a deterrent in the pursuit of a degree in science, mathematics, engineering and technology (STEM) fields, school officials say.

Recognizing the large population of part-time, working students, as well as students underrepresented in the sciences who attend CSU Dominguez Hills, the Department of Chemistry and Biochemistry sought a more flexible model for students completing lab requirements.

"We believe this is an approach to lab curricula that has not been done before," said Dr. H. Leonardo Martinez, professor of chemistry who is the principal investigator on the Keck grant. "We are very confident it will work and that it will attract more students into chemistry and STEM."

In conjunction with the Keck Foundation grant, chemistry lab instruction will be redesigned so that some of the lab time can be accomplished remotely with the use of what is called the cyber-enabled mass spectrometer, funded by the Keck Foundation.

Why chemistry will help you land your next job

Relationships dont last as long as they used to. I am old enough to remember the idea of a committed, long-term relationship and was in one myself for almost 15 years. Now people boast stints from 12 month to a couple of years.

Of course, Im referring to the relationships we create with our employers, not our loved ones. But increasingly, the two are becoming difficult to differentiate.

Since these business relationships keep getting shorter as temporary jobs appear to be on the rise the amount of time we spend dating potential employers increases in frequency. Longer-term business relationships now get celebrated in public ways.

LinkedIn, for example, notifies users when a contacts business anniversary comes around. Ive yet to see if an appropriate gift should accompany these anniversaries but it certainly inspires many to offer their congratulations. Whats next a professional version of Valentines Day?

Laugh if you will, but that line between business and personal relationships frequently gets blurred and chemistry now plays a major role in the hiring process.

This chemistry does not necessarily suggest a romantic relationship, but as social animals we gravitate toward those we enjoy spending time with. And no wonder; full-time employees likely spend twice as many waking hours with co-workers as with their spouse.

In many ways, that ever-so-critical first interview should be regarded as a first date. Increasingly, employers want to know whom they figuratively get into bed with when they hire and personal questions often find their way into an interview.

I have asked many potential employees to name their favourite website, a query that made the Glassdoors top 50 list of interview questions. Other popular questions on the list include What makes you uncomfortable? What are your hobbies? and What was the last book you read for fun?

Each question sounds like a blind-date conversation starter to me.

While we may think that professional accomplishments will land us our next position, an employer may subconsciously come to a decision based on attributes beyond our control.

Quantum chemistry takes on virtual reality

Modern computer games consoles have controllers that vibrate – when you crash your car in a racing game or get shot in a shoot-em-up, you get a jolt through your fingers, which is designed to increase the realism of the game and enhance your experience.

Imagine if you could do the same thing with chemistry. You sketch out some molecules, then move them together to see if (or how) they will react. As virtual electron clouds approach each other, they push back, resisting your efforts to push them any closer. You try different angles until you find the right geometry, or push hard enough to force them to react with each other.

All the while, in the background, the computer is making quantum chemical calculations in real time. This is Markus Reiher’s vision of the future. Together with his team at the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology (ETH) in Zurich, he is developing ‘haptic quantum chemistry’ systems. This involves both working out ways to speed up quantum chemical calculations to the point where they can be done in real time, but also developing ways of translating those calculations into a physical feedback system that exploits our incredibly sensitive sense of touch.

At the moment, the system is controlled by a pen-like device, but Reiher has visions of taking it into three dimensions using hardware developed for virtual reality simulations.

Such physical feedback would be a much more intuitive way for chemists to learn and explore reaction mechanisms and map out potential energy surfaces. Trying to work out whether your latest synthesis plan is reasonable? Give it a go in the virtual world first. Stuck on a reaction mechanism homework problem? Feel your way to the answer.

Of course, there are computational, theoretical and technological hurdles to get over, but the chemists have an advantage – they can feed off the resource-hungry world of video games to provide the hardware and computational power. Using chips developed to handle the graphics engines of realistic games means that massive numbers of calculations can be done in parallel.

When my tutors said that synthetic chemistry is something you ‘just get a feel for’, I don’t think this is quite what they had in mind, but I’m definitely looking forward to the day when I can.

Bethesda, MD The Federation of American Societies for Experimental Biology (FASEB) announces the opening of registration for the Science Research Conference (SRC): Biology and Chemistry of Vision.

Since its inception in 1985, the Biology and Chemistry of Vision FASEB Science Research Conference has been one of the premier and most successful meetings focused on photoreceptor biology. The upcoming 2013 meeting will highlight the most recent advances in a broad and diverse range of photoreceptor function issues.

This meeting brings together premier senior and junior investigators of different expertise to discuss pigment and retinoid turnover, the biochemistry and physiology of phototransduction, photoreceptor cell biology and development, synaptic transmission, and invertebrate vision, as well as vision disorders, animal models, and therapy. In keeping with the success in past meetings, the 2013 conference will continue to emphasize close and intense scientific interactions among the participants, especially between senior and junior investigators.

Mercer Students Study Neighborhood Chemistry

Over at Mercer, a chemistry professor has spearheaded a $100,000 program that looks at environmental concerns in Macon.

Along with seven undergraduates, assistant professor Jennifer Look plans to turn the outdoors into science lab.

"We're looking at the metals that could be accumulating that might affect the people who might live in the region," says junior Lisa Bianco.

"People have expressed some concerns over power plant emission," says Look.

"We want to determine if there are areas in Macon where there are trace elements that could potentially be hazardous," adds junior Matthew Bowen.

Look received a $50,000 foundation grant which was matched by the school to analyze the area around campus.

"Chemistry influences everything that you touch and eat and drink every day of your life," says Look.

"We're hoping to get great information out to the City of Macon that way it can improve environmental conditions throughout all of Macon to make it a more desirable place to live," Bowen says.

The research will identify Macon's environmental strengths as well as places that will require more study or clean-up. The research will then be broken down and presented to the community.
