Nobel laureates see a dip in the influence of their work after winning prize – Chemistry World

How different are the careers of Nobel laureates from other scientists? US research suggests they follow similar patterns up until the point they win the Nobel prize.

Like ordinary scientists they rely on collaborations, and have what the authors describe as hot streaks periods where an individual scientists performance is substantially better than usual. However, the laureates were more productive, likely to have longer hot streaks and more than one hot streak, compared with ordinary scientists.

The authors were surprised to find a significant but temporary dip in the impact of the work of laureates in the first or second year following the prize, even though they were just as productive, and had similar amounts of funding available. The impact of their work was judged by the number of papers in the top 1% of citations, for the four years immediately before and after the award.

The impact dip is most pronounced among physicists with a drop of 18.1% in the second year after the award but smallest in chemists with a drop of 4.8%. There was also a significant decrease in individual work by both chemistry and medicine laureates after the prize. Dashun Wang, at the Centre for Science of Science and Innovation at Northwestern University, says they had expected to see evidence of the premium that comes with the prize that increased visibility would increase the impact of their work.

Wang and his colleagues investigated laureates performance using a range of resources to create a database of nearly every chemistry, physics, and physiology and medicine Nobel prize winner from 1900 to 2016. They also established a comparison data set of more ordinary scientists for each laureate who published their first paper after 1960, they randomly selected 20 scientists in the same discipline and who started their careers at the same time.

But a deeper look at research topics suggests that, after being awarded the prize, laureates had a higher likelihood of switching topics than would be expected if they randomly changed research direction at any point in their career. One example is that of Jean-Marie Lehn, one of three scientists who were awarded the 1987 chemistry Nobel prize for the synthesis of cryptands. Immediately after winning, Lehns focus shifted to self-assembly and self-organisation a topic hed never previously published on. Its not clear why this happens the moment you win the prize, especially as its difficult to predict when that will be, says Wang. But it perhaps demonstrates the unwavering effort of Nobel laureates to keep pushing the frontier.

Alex Petersen, in the management of complex systems department at theUniversity of California Merced, is also intrigued by the findings. Winning a Nobel prize affords you a lot of freedom to change research direction, he says, and adds that perhaps the dip is just showing the lag in time it takes the research community to decide whether or not a new direction is worth following.

Suncor reports chemical sheen on Sand Creek, breach of containment area at refinery north of Denver – The Colorado Independent

Contaminated water has been seeping into Sand Creek just up from where it meets the South Platte River near the Suncor Energy oil refinery north of Denver, and company officials on Wednesday said they were monitoring conditions and will make any necessary repairs to a spill containment pool behind sandbags where crews were pumping out water.

A sheen of benzene and other chemicals was detected on the surface of Sand Creek on May 7 and again on May 15, company officials said.

Sundays heavy rains raised water levels along the creek, leading to a breach of the containment area.

An investigation is underway to identify the material and understand the potential source, Suncor spokeswoman Jessica Depencier said in an emailed response to queries from The Denver Post.

For those struggling with chemical dependency, making a step towards treatment can bechallenging and often filled with uncertainty. Texas Tech Physicians Psychiatry haspartnered with Covenant Health to offer a new Chemical Dependency IntensiveOutpatient Clinic (IOP).

IOP is a substance use disorder treatment program appropriate for those who are not inneed of medically-supervised detox or residential level care. Dr. Wakefield is also the director of the IOP clinic, said with the stress of the COVID-19 pandemic, now more than ever, there is a crucial need for mental health care and clinics such as this. Wakefield said this pandemic has brought increased frustrations that are causing more stress and anxiety and for many people a resurgence ofexcessive drinking issues and other addictions.

Studies have found that people in drug and alcohol recovery are more likely to relapsefollowing crises and the coronavirus pandemic is a disruptive situation, Wakefield said. The fourth wave (mental health needs) starts as soon as the pandemic hits and it doesntcome back down until long after the pandemic ends. The mental health response startsimmediately and just grows and grows for a long time for many reasons. This clinic ishere to provide treatment and resources for our community.

The misuse and abuse of alcohol, tobacco, illicit drugs and prescription medicationsaffect the health and well-being of millions of Americans. According to the World HealthOrganization, 31 million people suffer from drug use disorders.

This clinic could not have opened at a better time, Covenant Childrens CEO AmyThompson, M.D., said. Many in our community suffer from these kinds of addictions, and we need to provide the resources for them to get help. We are proud to partner withTexas Tech Physicians on this initiative.

The program, which offers care to individuals who are unfunded or underfunded, provides a comprehensive, 16-week program that follows a decreasing intensity model.

The program is open to adults, ages 18 and older, whose primary diagnosis is a substanceuse disorder. IOP groups are offered in the evening to allow participants to take care oftheir work responsibilities during the day.

This level of care allows the individual to be part of the recovery program on a part-timeyet intensive schedule designed to accommodate work and family life. With this program,a person can participate while living at home while addressing family, career oreducational issues during recovery.

The IOP uses the Matrix Model, a comprehensive multi-format program that covers sixkey clinical areas: Individual/Conjoint therapy Early recovery Relapse prevention Family education Social support Urine testing

My Chemical Romance Bassist Has a New Comic + Album on the Way – Loudwire

My Chemical Romance's reunion may be on hold for the time being, but bassist Mikey Way is keeping busy with a new comic and corresponding album featuring music from his other band, Electric Century.

Way and Shaun Simon previously worked on the comic Collapser, but are now prepping an Electric Century comic for release with the help of artist Toby Cypress.

The story centers on Johnny Ashford, a former sitcom star who drives drunk through a storefront and gets arrested. Ashford's aspiring actress girlfriend bails him out and he begins seeing a hypnotherapist. Dr. Evers sends Johnny to his happy place1980s Atlantic City, where he relives his childhood on the boardwalk, hardly noticing shadowy specters all around.

The description continues, "Johnnys addiction shifts from alcohol to his hypnotic trips to the boardwalk and the Electric Century casino, which satisfies his desire for fame. He discovers a way to stay there. In the real world, his girlfriends search for him leads her to Dr. Evers, who offers her a free session, and Johnny meets her on a beach by the boardwalkher own 'happy place.' Johnny brings her to his boardwalk, only to discover its true nature. Johnny must find a way to save himself and his girlfriend, and escape the Electric Century."

Im delighted to announce this book! says Mikey Way. The genesis of the story has been many years in the making, created with some of my closest friends. Getting to bring the two things I am most passionate about together comics & music has been exciting, challenging and unbelievably rewarding. I've been waiting to tell this type of story about my home state for a long time. I truly hope everyone enjoys it.

The Electric Century comic will be released by Z2, whose Josh Frankel says, After I read Young Animals Collapser series last year, I was blown away. When the opportunity came about to collaborate with Shaun and Mikey on something for Z2, it was a no brainer. Little did I know that it would not only lead to one of our best books so far, but what is sure to be one of the best comics of the year. Period.

Shaun Simon adds, I couldnt be happier working with Mikey again and especially at Z2, a publisher with a firm base in the world of music and culture centric books, that values quality over quantity. Toby Cypress has become one of my favorite artists over the past few years. Its an incredible honor to work with such a talent and watch him bring this world to life with us.

Meanwhile, Way has been working with his Electric Century band on a new album and corresponding graphic novel, with it being prepped to be released in comic shops, book and record stores this September. There will also be a special deluxe limited edition available for pre-order exclusively through the Z2 website.

Rock Star Beauty Guru Brings Her Skincare Chemistry to Houston Sue Y. Nabi Reveals the Secrets of Merging Science and Business – PaperCity Magazine

There was rain, then sunshine, then rain, then sunshine in London on Thursday, when PaperCity had a virtual sit down with rock star beauty industry force Sue Y. Nabi, founder of the all-pure, vegan skincare line Orveda. Our interest in Nabi, who led both LOral and Lancme as CEO in her storied career, and the line that she has created rests on the fact that The Houstonians Solaya Spa is the only spa in the country to carry her coveted brand.

Let us begin by saying that Nabi is not your typical beauty brand entrepreneur for she knows as much about the chemistry of the products as she does about the marketing. The brilliant Algerian, who has a degree in biochemistry and an MBA in luxury marketing, called Paris home for the two decades that she scaled the career ladder in the beauty industry. Now, rainy London is her home base with co-founder Nicolas Vu . This is where the duo oversees every aspect of her skincare line.

Nabi admits that her education employed both the right and left sides of her brain and with good reason that she excelled in both sides.

My father was an engineer and my mother was an artist, so I grew both sides of my brain at the same time, she tells PaperCity. I am comfortable about science, business and creative things.

As CEO of the two biggest brands in the world, Nabi notes, It was an amazing position to see what was happening worldwide . . . there was a thinking that there was a space for a high-class skin care line that was the best of the best in terms of formulation, efficacy, stability, safety and most of all ethical production . . .It had to be vegan.

Think the vegan version of La Mer. Its pricey and it, nevertheless, has its devotees.

While already launched in Europe, Orveda had had little introduction into the states other than being carried by Saks Fifth Avenue. Last summer, after reading a Wall Street Journalstory about the line, Renea Cassman, GM of the Trellis Spa and Solaya Spa & Salon by The Houstonian, reached out to Nabi. A team flew to London to investigate the products. A bit later, Nabi was invited to Houston to check out The Houstonians plans for the ongoing remodeling of the highly-regarded Trellis Spa. While in Houston, Nabi visited Solaya, the satellite location in Highland Village.

We spent the day with Renea and the team and observed the Trellis plans and those for Soraya. We were super excited on both sides, Nabi says. This is the way we decided that Solaya would be the first and only spa at the moment to have the Orveda line.

"They should also be added to this list. When I first watched the movie, I began to wonder if they actually did fall in love in real life!"

iamlonely

"Such a beautiful, realistic couple. They should've given them some kind of award for sure!"

ashols115

"They are my favorite onscreen couple of all time. Their chemistry is so natural and effortless."

lumos47

"I know the movie is goofy, but the chemistry between them is so pure and sweet."

aleeh4b6e65068

"I said this in the initial questionnaire and I'll say it again here:

Those two created smokin' hot chemistry in a movie with no kiss, no declaration of love, two (maybe three) non-sexual touches between them in the entire movie, yet every single scene they share is absolutely on fire with sexual tension. It's easy to make chemistry with a 30-second-long passionate kiss, but it takes incredible talent and craft to pull off that kind of chemistry without any of the traditional markers of onscreen romance."

greyladybast

"Its a classic, and the sexual tension between them especially in the song 'Shall We Dance' is fantastic."

Someone Made a Norteo My Chemical Romance Cover and We’re Feeling it, Compa – Remezcla

2020 was supposed to be the year for My Chemical Romance. After years of speculation, the New Jersey emo giants played a reunion show in L.A. in December 2019, which was followed by the announcement of various other live dates to follow. Now, the COVID-19 pandemic has stolen the thunder of the news and the fate of the reunion is up in the air. Its a sad situation but luckily, we have something for you to catch your breath.

YouTube user Erick Curiel uploaded a norteo version of one of their biggest hits (although if were splitting hairs, it sounds a bit more Tejano overall), Im Not Okay (I Promise). The cover uses the studio version as its basis, then layered with accordion, drums, and vocals en espaol on top. The results are both faithful to the original in terms of structure and passion, and 100% regional ALV. Its such a delightful little thing that it will at least give a smile to all those diehard fans who packed the historic Palacio de los Deportes concert that marked the end of the Black Parade tour back in the day.

Like Cardi B recently proved, the emo revival is unstoppable and the new wave of regional music is having a moment, so this feels like a perfect storm of sorts. If you feel nostalgic not just for Hot Topic gear but also carne asada Sundays, this is definitely up your alley.

Enjoying the fireworks? You are watching chemistry in action! – WHNT News 19

When you are watching the fireworks this year, just think that is chemistry in action!

Okay, you may not be thinking about science and would rather focus on the show, but the spectacular colors and sizzling sounds wouldnt happen without it.

When we look up at the sky and see the rockets red glare, you can thank the element strontium for the ruby hue.

In fact, the majority of the colors you see are courtesy of various compound salts bursting in the air.

Red is formed when strontium salts are heated to extreme temperatures.

Orange fireworks get their glow from calcium, where as yellow is formed from sodium.

Green bursts of color are from barium, and copper compounds are responsible for the shimmery blue bombs bursting in air.

But if youd rather celebrate the holiday in your backyard with a big box of sparklers, behold that you are enjoying the sights and sounds of chemistry in your hand.

Sparkler rods contain a mixture of powdered metallic fuel, oxidizers and binder and whats in the fuel can result in different colors.

Aluminum and magnesium compounds produce yellow sparks; iron produces more bronzy hues, and titanium produces silvery sparks.

Oxidizers in the sparkler rod produce oxygen, which help the metallic fuel burn.

And of course, there are binding materials that hold everything together.

Have a safe and happy Fourth of July, and if you watch any fireworks this weekend I hope you enjoy the science show!

Senegal port seeks removal of 2,700 tonnes of chemical that caused Beirut blast – Reuters

FILE PHOTO: A damaged tire is seen beside transport trucks as they wait in a line to be loaded with goods destined for neighboring Mali at the port in Dakar, Senegal April 30, 2020. Picture taken April 30, 2020. REUTERS/Zohra Bensemra/File Photo

DAKAR (Reuters) - The port of Senegals capital Dakar on Thursday said it had requested the removal of around 2,700 tonnes of highly explosive ammonium nitrate stored in its complex - the same volume of the chemical that caused Beiruts devastating port blast this month.

The unidentified owner of the stockpile has found a warehouse to store the industrial chemical outside the city, according to the general directorate of the port, which sits next to Dakars densely populated downtown.

He is currently working with the environment ministry to obtain approval to urgently remove this cargo, it said in a statement that did not say how long the port had stored the goods destined for Mali.

The port strictly adheres to international rules for the management and storage of dangerous materials, it said.

Beiruts port had held 2,750 tonnes of ammonium nitrate for six years without safety measures, before they detonated on Aug. 4, killing more than 150 people, injuring thousands and leaving about a quarter of a million people homeless.

The dramatic situation that Beirut has just experienced prompted the High Commander of Dakars port to take journalists on a tour of the ports facilities to show that security measures are up to standard, the statement said.

The Beirut blast should be a wake-up call for countries on the dangers of ammonium nitrate, experts say. Commonly used in fertilisers and as an industrial explosive, it is considered relatively safe if handled properly, but has caused some of the worlds deadliest industrial accidents.

Did you spot this nod to My Chemical Romance in ‘Amazing Spider-Man’? – Alternative Press

By now, most My Chemical Romance fans probably have every scene from the Helena video memorized. From the iconic wardrobe to the choreography and the set, theres a reason why the video remains one of MCRs most popular. But did you know that the church has been used in various movies and television shows over the years?

Thanks to fans quick eyes over the years, the Helena church has been spotted in both The Amazing Spider-Man and various episodes of Criminal Minds.

For those that dont know, the Helena church is the Immanuel Presbyterian Church in Los Angeles. Due to its location, the church is bound to probably end up in a few different films and shows.

When 2012s The Amazing Spider-Man made its debut, many MCR fans noticed that the church used in Captain Stacys funeral scene looked very familiar to the Helena video. For Marc Webb, the films director, both the location and scenes resemblance to the MCR video may not have been just coincidence.

Prior to his work on The Amazing Spider-Man, Webb has directed music videos for various artists including Green Day, Evanescence and Miley Cyrus. He also happened to direct the Helena music video.

So when it came time to direct The Amazing Spider-Man, Webb may have taken a few references from his past work. After Spider-Mans, played by Andrew Garfield, love interests father Captain Stacy dies, there is a funeral held for him.

In the film, theres a particular scene that shows mourners walking down the steps after the service. The scene is shot from a top-down angle and the frame is filled with black umbrellas. This The Amazing Spider-Man scene is nearly a direct recreation of what is seen in the 2005 My Chemical Romance video.

Although the similarities may not have been directly intentional, Webb acknowledges them in The Amazing Spider-Man commentary. He notes that both the video and movie scene were filmed in the same location. He also jokingly admits that he has a fondness for umbrellas which is clearly shown.

Along with The Amazing Spider-Man, the Helena church has been used in various other programs. Reddit user u/klusterhug noticed that the crime show Criminal Minds has used the location several times.

The Helena church is in another episode of Criminal Minds, they say.

Strange hexagonal form of table salt discovered | Research – Chemistry World

There are still things to discover about ordinary table salt, a research team from Russia has revealed after creating an exotic version of the usually cubic crystal: hexagonal sodium chloride.

2D materials, which are made up of a single or a few atomic layers, have properties and structures that are often very different to the bulk compound. While some, like graphene, have been studied for decades, there are still many potentially thousands waiting to be discovered.

With the synthesis of the first hexagonal sodium chloride, chemists have shown again how odd 2D materials can be. Table salt is one of the best known and simplest ionic compounds and the archetypal cubic crystal. Yet when deposited as an ultrathin sheet on a diamond surface it assumes the same hexagonal structure.

The discovery was made with the help of an evolutionary algorithm, which the researchers used to predict crystal structures of sodium chloride on different metal and diamond surfaces. The latter proved to be a hit as salt and diamond showed a strong chemical interaction a prerequisite for unusual structures.

Electron diffraction and x-ray analysis of samples confirmed that salt-on-diamond really contains hexagonal sodium chloride. As the salt layers thickness increases beyond 6nm, the hexagonal structure reverts to the cubic one.

The materials wide electronic band gap might make it useful for field-effect transistors, the researchers suggest.

SEATTLE A U.S. judge Thursday extended the order banning the city of Seattle and the Seattle Police Department from using chemical weapons, such as tear gas, pepper spray and flash-bangs on protesters until Sept. 30, 2020.

The order also bans other projectiles like pepper balls, blast balls, rubber bullets and foam-tip projectiles.

The order does allow police officers to take action against protesters, including using tear gas, if there is an "imminent" threat to life, safety or destruction of property and other crowd control measures were taken but not effective, according to the court order issued Thursday.

Seattle Police Chief Carmen Best must also sign off on the use of tear gas or other crowd control measures before they are used, and may only authorize a "limited and targeted use" of tear gas and it must be directed at those causing violence or posing a threat to public safety, the court order said.

This order was originally put in place on June 12 and was set to expire on June 26, but the judge decided to extend it through September.

The ban on chemical weapons against protesters went into effect following a Black Lives Matter group suing the Seattle Police Department earlier this month. The group said authorities overreacted to recent demonstrations and unleashed the weapons on largely peaceful protests.

Seattle Mayor Jenny Durkan and Chief Best have apologized. However, Chief Best has said some demonstrators violently targeted police, throwing projectiles and ignoring orders to disperse.

Last week, the Seattle City Council also voted unanimously to ban police from using chokeholds, as well as tear gas, pepper spray and other crowd control devices.

The council also adopted legislation requiring officers to display badge numbers.

IN REVIEW: ‘The Love Birds’ short on plot long on chemistry – The Prospector

TheLove Birdsis the new film from the director of the critically acclaimedTheBig Sick,Michael Showalter. The Love Birds was supposed to be released in theaters nationwide in March but due to COVID-19, it is currently streaming on Netflix.

This romantic comedyhasa clich driven plot that is saved by its two stars. The second film of Showalters career reunites theleadfromThe Big Sick,KumailNanjiani, who is best known for his starring role in the ensemble cast of HBOsSilicon Valley.Nanijianisco-starinthe filmis Issa Rae best known for her role in HBOsInsecurenowon its fourth season.

Aplot centeringon the crumbling relationship between Jibran, played byNanijiani, andLeilani played by Rae.During their breakup, theybecomewitnesses to a murder and assume they will be the prime suspects sincebothare sighted at the sceneof the crime. Being people of color, they feel that their story will not be believed by the police and seek to clear their names.

While the plot isrelatively standardandhas been beaten to death, the two leads elevate this film with their comic timing of playing off eachotherscharacter. The chemistrybetween the actors comes off asifthey areabelievablereal-lifecouple.

One of the best scenes in the film is the scene where they are about to be tortured to find out what information they have. The interaction between both leadsiscomicaland they work welloffeachothersquips.

Another scene that works very well is when they think a cop has spotted them as suspects and are relieved that the police officer is just racially profiling them as he stares.

Classic cinema is loaded with examples of great back and forth between couples in peril, such as Michael Douglas and Kathleen Turner inRomancing the Stoneand Harrison Ford and Karen Allen inRaiders of the LostArk.

Inmany ways, this couple is very reminiscent of many of these earlier portrayals. One aspect that stands out from many of thosepreviouscouples is this team is very balanced in decisionmaking rather than the male always making thedecisions. Thebest aspect of the film is how it shows that even though two people in a relationship can genuinely care about each other, there can be aspects of their lives that create a dividethatcan be difficult to overcome.

The opening is sweet and realistic as a setup to the peril they will find themselves in. Much of the plot will be just goingto this point to find this outbut the leads make the somewhat predictable ridefun.

So, while no heavy lifting is involved in any semblance of an original plot, I didfindthe leads made this an enjoyable film worth watching.

An abandoneddog suffering extensive chemical burns that authorities are unsure were inflicted intentionally or by accident received veterinary treatment at the Coachella Valley Animal Campus in Thousand Palms on Wednesday.

The male Australian shepherd mix was brought into the shelter by a good Samaritan and had a large section of its backside injured, as well as part of its tail missing, according to Riverside County Department of Animal Services spokesman John Welsh.

Veterinary technician Lori Stamp Brown was among the first shelter staff to care for the dog. "The wounds were consistent with what we have seen with chemical burns,'' Brown said. "He was experiencing pain and was very uncomfortable with being touched.''

Welsh said the dog appears to be a stray, and it was unclear where he was injured, or the exact source. "It's uncertain if the injuries were accidental, or if someone purposely injured the dog in an act of cruelty,'' he said.

Department of Animal Services Director Julie Bank said she was troubled by the possibility that the dog was intentionally splashed with chemicals. "We welcome any tips from the community and, meanwhile, we will continue to provide the dog with the treatment he deserves,'' Bank said.

The dog is receiving a regimen of antibiotics and other care to promote healing of his wounds, according to Welsh.

Anyone with information was asked to call the agency at 951-358-7387.
