As the saying goes, nothing can be said to be certain, except death, taxes, and the never-ending inventiveness of clock hacks. No matter how tried and proven a concept is, someone will always find a new twist for it. Case in point: notorious clock builder [Shinsaku Hiura] took the good old split-flap display approach, and mixed things up by using a deck of playing cards to actually represent the time.

Technically, the clock works just like a regular flip clock, except that only the upper half of the split-flap is used to display the digits, while the lower half is showing the cards backsides. Other than that, the mechanics are the same: a set of hinges holding the cards are arranged on a rotor thats moved by a stepper motor until the correct digit is shown (STLs available on Thingiverse). Aces low, Jokers are zeroes, and the queen strikes at noon.

At the center of it is an ESP32 that controls each digits motor driver, and retrieves the time via WiFi, keeping the general component count conveniently low. Of course, one option is to arrange the cards in their order to keep rotations at a minimum, but lets be real, the flapping sound is half the fun here. So instead, [Shinsaku Hiura] arranged the cards randomly and mapped it in the code accordingly. Hustler Casino Live's popular livestream show is taking a brief break while some of its stars are busy testing out tournament poker in the 2022 World Series of Poker Main Event. And many of them will enter Day 2 on Thursday or Friday with a healthy stack, including the show's co-founder, Ryan Feldman.

But no one from the popular livestreamed cash game show is off to a hotter start than "Wes Side" Wesley Fei, who turned his Day 1a starting stack of 60,000 all the way up to 300,000 before the session concluded, putting him among the chip leaders in the entire tournament.

Hustler Casino Live, a production from within the Hustler Casino in Los Angeles, first launched almost exactly one year ago. The Live at the Bike rival show gained immediate notoriety and then exploded last October when Phil Ivey and Tom Dwan showed up for two weekend streams. With over 145,000 YouTube subscribers already, the sky is the limit for the show. Feldman spoke with PokerNews' Sarah Herring during a Day 1 break to reveal a few players he'd eventually love to get on HCL one day.

Feldman, along with his partner Nick Vertucci, both of whom played key roles in the previous Live at the Bike success, are doing more than just building a poker show. This week, they're building stacks in the WSOP Main Event.

Feldman bagged 244,000 on Day 1, four times his starting stack, and will come back to more than 300 big blinds for the Day 2abc session on Thursday. Vertucci didn't have quite as much success on Day 1d, but he still finished with a healthy stack of 108,900 and is in great shape.

Both HCL producers also compete on stream quite often along with the occasional commentary duties. The show's fans often call Vertucci a "nit" due to his tight image at the table. Hence, why he's sometimes referred to as "Nitucci." Feldman, however, told Herring that his business partner's nitty image is a bit exaggerated.

Feldman said it "would be very big for sure" for the show if he or one of the other regs ran deep in the WSOP Main Event.

Fei, who is more known as just "Wesley" on HCL's streams, is one of poker's newest entertaining characters. He began playing poker less than six months ago. The Chinese born crypto millionaire plays loose and has quickly become a fan favorite on livestreams.

During the Day 1a session, he stacked chips from start to finish and trailed just one player at the end, Cedrric Trevino (317,800), by a small margin.

"Wes Side Wesley" could run into some of his regular opponents on Hustler Casino Live on Day 2 or later in the Main Event. Commentator David Tuchman finished with more than twice his starting stack (140,900). Francisco Fragoso bagged 86,100 and is off to a strong start. Marc Goone, who won a double-up on the second hand with aces beating kings, fell back a bit from his early start, but still ended with 61,200.

Hustler commentator Kyle Ravreby, aka "RaverPoker," couldn't get much going on Day 1, but he survived and advanced with 34,900, almost exactly where Koray Aldemir, the defending champion, ended Day 1 last year.

Other Hustler Casino Live stars advancing to Day 2 of the WSOP Main Event include Ziao "Zeo" Guo (38500), Stanley Tang (37,400), and Alan Keating (15,000). Not everyone from the show was fortunate enough to make it past the first session in poker's world championship event, however. Commentator "DGAF" was a Day 1 exit.

The trials for six people accused of cheating a Deadwood casino out of more than $100,000 in cash began this week. The first individual entered a not guilty plea.

A Lawrence County grand jury in May indicted six individuals for their alleged roles in swindling money from a defective cashier kiosk inside the Gold Dust Casino last November. Prosecutors in the South Dakota Gold Rush town allege that one of the individuals, identified as 34-year-old Daniel Wade Emme, discovered in November that an ATM machine inside the casino was malfunctioning.

After withdrawing cash from the standalone kiosk, Emme realized the transaction never hit his actual bank account. After determining that the machine was dispensing cash without communicating with his bank, Emme and the five others allegedly performed numerous withdrawals totaling in excess of six digits.

Emme pleaded not guilty during his first appearance before 4th Circuit Court Judge Eric Strawn in the Lawrence County Courthouse. Emme in 2017 was convicted of a felony drug possession charge, which enhances the grand larceny charge currently before him from a Class 3 to a Class 2 felony. If convicted, he faces up to 25 years in prison and $50,000 in fines.

Emme, along with the five others, is facing grand theft and conspiracy charges. The other defendants are Christopher Auwerter, 32, Courtland Blaylock, 23, Shea Fleming, 31, Crystal Hufford, 29, and Brandon McCay, 30. All are South Dakota residents living near the historic Deadwood mining town that is today a popular tourist destination with its famed Main Street gaming parlors.

Law enforcement alleges that the casino kiosk was operated by Global Payments, a Las Vegas-based manufacturer that provides the gaming industry with an array of financial technology solutions.

Global Payments built the gaming industrys first full-service, end-to-end kiosk that it claims is capable of replacing staffed casino cashier cages. The standalone financial transaction machine can redeem ticket slips, process jackpot filings and tax documents, break large bills, complete ATM withdrawals, and provide cash advances.

State prosecutors say Emme and the five others used the malfunctioning kiosk as their personal piggy banks. Lawrence County States Attorney John Fitzgerald says the six charged conspired to steal as much cash as possible from the deficient machine.

They learned of a glitch, a deficiency, in the Global Payment kiosk machine at the Gold Dust Casino and what was happening was that they were able to withdraw money from Gold Dust Casino without any deductions occurring on their credit cards or their debit cards, Fitzgerald explained.

The county attorney alleges that the six people charged routinely visited the kiosk over a three-week span in an effort to conceal their crimes. In all, the state believes they illegally stole at least $100,000, but not more than $500,000, from the malfunctioning terminal.

Malfunctioning ATM machines are rare, but problems do occur from time to time. But when a machine wrongly dispenses cash, its a crime to knowingly keep the money.

Even when an ATM or similar device like the Global Payment kiosk runs amok, the technology behind the terminals keeps a detailed track record of which card was inserted when the malfunction occurred.

ATM machines balance their transactions daily. And their track records are easily able to identify which transactions did not properly hit/communicate with a customers bank in the rare case of such a hiccup.

The gross gaming revenue forecast for Macau casino concessionaires has been cut by S&P Global Ratings as the institution cited the surge of COVID-19 cases in its report, which was published yesterday (Thursday, July 7).

S&P Global Ratings stated that with the latest developments, the GGR of the casino concessionaires will be MOP87.74 billion ($1.08 billion) at most, which is 20%-30% of the GGR in the pre-pandemic era. In 2019, casino concessionaires recorded MOP292.46 billion in GGR ($3.6 billion).

The statement also shared a few details concerning the liquidity of the concessionaires. It stated that they have 18 to 20 months of liquidity even if a zero-revenue scenario occurs.

Earlier this year, an analysis conducted by JP Morgan analysts was focused on SJM Holdings and it concluded that the concessionaire is running low on funds.

Original insights into the market revenue for 2023 stated that the GGR of the concessionaires in Macau will be 80% of the pre-pandemic levels. However, that number has also reduced as S&P Global Ratings noted that the revenue that the casinos will reach will likely be 50-70% of the GGR of 2019.

June GGR of Macau concessionaires reached MOP2.48 billion ($310 million) which is the worst number since September 2020. Compared to the May GGR, which was MOP3.34 billion ($413 million), the June GGR is down 25.9% and additionally, the GGR was 62.1% lower than June 2021.

Even though July has barely started, many are convinced that his month will be no better as the number of tourists who are staying overnight and are visiting the casinos will reduce. One of the main reasons why is that hotels at casino resorts in Macau are being used for quarantine purposes.

Lau Fong Chi, a Macau Government Tourism Office official, stated that 470 rooms at the Grand Lisboa Palace (SJM Holdings) and 300 rooms at Grand Hyatt Macaus B1 Tower (Melco Resorts and Entertainment Ltd.) will now be now used as quarantine rooms for people that test positive for COVID-19.

Sheraton Grand Macao (Londoner Macao resort) and the Parisian Macao hotel are also used for the same purposes. Grand Lisboa will be used as a quarantined hotel until at least July 11 as it was locked down on Tuesday after 13 people at the premises tested positive for COVID-19. Back in May, Macaus Legislative Assembly Second Standing Committee discussed the possibility to help casino concessionaires boost their GGR by giving them tax breaks if they manage to bring foreign customers to gamble on their premises.

Casino stocks were a staple of many portfolios for years, and with the expansion into Macau, China, they were considered a cash cow. However, COVID-19 proved problematic with lockdowns in China and globally. With the pandemic abating and everyone getting back to business as usual, one big brokerage house from Wall Street is betting big again on these casinos.

Citigroup has issued a few calls with a focus on big casinos. Each call is incredibly positive, forecasting massive upside in both the near and long term.

George Choi was the lead analyst on the call, and he made the point that most investors seem to be willing to look past the recent COVID-19 outbreak in Macau and have regained confidence in the eventual EBITDA recovery in Macau. He attributes the positive sentiment change to the much-lower-than-anticipated regulatory risks after the Legislative Assemblys passing of the Gaming Law amendments in June.

Also, Chinas decision to half the mandatory quarantine days for inbound travelers also gets investors excited again, according to Choi. In the near term, he thinks the license retender, likely to happen in August, could be the next positive catalyst to rerate the Macau stocks to the next level.

It is important to remember that no single analyst report should be used as a sole basis for any buying or selling decision.

Las Vegas Sands Corp. (NYSE: LVS): Citigroup reiterated a Buy rating and slightly lowered the price target from $57 to $56, implying upside of 61% from the most recent closing price of $34.76. The stock traded around $35 on Friday, in a 52-week range of $28.88 to $52.00. Shares are down over 8% year to date.

Melco Resorts & Entertainment Ltd. (NASDAQ: MLCO): Citi reiterated a Buy rating and lowered the $12.50 price target to $11, implying upside of 87% from the most recent closing price of $5.89. The stock has a 52-week trading range of $4.06 to $16.58, and it traded at over $5 a share on Friday. The stock is down 48% year to date.

MGM Resorts International (NYSE: MGM): Citi reiterated a Buy rating and lowered the price target from $59 to $56, implying upside of 84% from the most recent closing price of $30.36. The stock traded around $30 on Friday, in a 52-week range of $26.41 to $51.17. Shares are down over 34% year to date.

Volunteers installed a wing-themed art installation on the grounds of Vandergrifts Casino Theatre Saturday as part of the Wings Across Westmoreland initiative.

Vandergrift was the eighth location included in Westmoreland Cultural Trusts countywide art initiative featuring metal wings inspired by places in various locations in Westmoreland County.

The Casino finally has its wings, said Janice Oberdorf, treasurer of the nonprofit Casino Theatre Restoration Management.

Community members were asked to submit their suggestions of landmark areas in Vandergrift via social media for consideration by Greensburg-based father and daughter artists Patrick and Riley Mahoney.

The wings feature recognizable landmarks in (the) Vandergrift (area) such as the gazebo at Kennedy Park, The Annual Art Festival, Wooden Door Winery, Festa Italiana di Vandergrift, Riverside Drive-In, churches and more, Oberdorf said.

Vandergrifts wings were revealed Saturday evening during an unveiling ceremony at its new location outside on the patio at the historic Casino Theatre.

The project was paid for through grants from the Allegheny Foundation and the National Road Heritage corridor of the Pennsylvania Heritage Program, under the Pennsylvania Department of Conservation and Natural Resources.

Oberdorf said the entire project cost about $20,000.

Vandergrift resident and council candidate Marilee Kessler attended Saturdays unveiling.

These wings are the only ones located in the northern part of Westmoreland County. Its great to see these good things happening beautiful artwork celebrating our community, Kessler said.

The wings share the patio with oversized glass tile mosaics created in 2017 by regional artist Daviea Davis.

Theater volunteers have updated the patio to offer an area for guests to mingle during intermission and before and after shows. Exterior electric work that was part of the upgrades was paid for through a $10,000 grant from the Rangos Foundation.

The wings are first painted on canvas, photographed, enlarged and finally printed on vinyl, which can withstand the elements.

The other wing sites are located in Ligonier, Greensburg, Smithton, Overlys Country Christmas, Youngwood, Jeanette and Mt. Pleasant.

Its the hope of the Westmoreland Cultural Trust that these sites become destination sites and we encourage everyone to stop and visit them all, Oberdorf said.

Construction advances on Rivers Casino hotel

Rivers Casino and The Landing Hotel just made a connection.

On Aug. 20, construction crews placed a ceremonial beam that joins the seven-story, 219-room hotel with the North Shore casinos east faade facing the Carnegie Science Center.

The literal connection of the two facilities is fundamental for integrating the casinos gaming and entertainment complex with the new hospitality venue, says Steven Massaro, president of Massaro Corp.

The hotel project was reactivated this summer after a 15-month construction shutdown due to Covid. The Landing will open in 2022 creating approximately 128 jobs.

Klai Juba Wald, the interior designer and architect for the hotel, created a color palette of deep blues and rich golds and tactile finishes. Artwork in each room will feature local themes.

Casino visitors can see a life-size model guest room located just off of the gaming floor.

Dr. Jeremy Goodman is the next president and CEO of the Pittsburgh Zoo & PPG Aquarium.

On Oct. 1, Goodman will succeed Dr. Barbara Baker, who has been the organizations president and CEO for 31 years. She will hold the honorary title of president emeritus.

Goodman, a veterinarian who serves as executive director of the Roger Williams Park Zoo in Providence, Rhode Island, will be the Pittsburgh Zoos eighth director since it opened in 1898.

The new CEO worked as a private practice vet after earning a doctorate in veterinary medicine from Tufts University. For nine years, Goodman was director of the Turtle Back Zoo in New Jersey, where he turned around the finances of the municipal zoo and achieved its first national accreditation by the Association of Zoos & Aquariums.

The Superintendency of Gambling Casinos (SCJ) of Chile has updated an agreement with the Financial Analysis Unit (UAF) to promote new measures to prevent money laundering and terrorist financing in local casinos.

The signature of the UAF Director Javier Cruz and Superintendent Vivien Villagrn renews a Framework Collaboration Agreement initially started in 2009, which follows international standards.

The agreement includes specific inspection programs to be carried out for Chilean gambling establishments, as well as training for UAF and SCJ officials in regards to common interest issues and promotion activities.

The new agreement consolidates coordination between both entities. For example, it works to carry out activities to verify compliance with rules and regulations, and reinforces the information exchange related to administrative sanctioning procedures initiated at gambling casinos, the SCJ explained.

Javier Cruz warned that as participants in the national anti-money laundering and terrorism financing system, casinos must implement policies and procedures to prevent and detect suspicious operations related to those crimes.

To do this, they must not only know the risks to which theyre exposed, but also the warning signs that they should look for. Hence the importance of the collaboration, training and supervision activities that we can develop with the SCJ and the entities that it regulates and supervises, he added.

Villagrn echoed the view, saying that international standards require us to strengthen inter-institutional coordination in order to protect the economy and the country from the serious damage caused by the money laundering crimes and terrorist financing.

After updating the agreement, the SCJ will be able to formalize actions from the Action Plan of the National Strategy to prevent and fight these problems. Additionally, the joint work provides the opportunity to exchange knowledge and good practices and will allow the establishment of joint strategies that reduce the threats and vulnerabilities of the casino industry when it comes to money laundering, terrorist financing and corruption.

MGM Springfield made the stateGaming Commission's planned discussion on Thursday about the absence of poker at the western Massachusetts casino an easy one.

"So, really, I think our first statement is that poker will be returning to MGM Springfield," Daniel Miller, the casino's compliance director, said. "We have plans that it will come back in Q4 of this year."

The state's two casinos MGM Springfield and Encore Boston Harbor were freed of nearly all COVID-19 restrictions and resumed mostly normal operations in late May without offering poker, which had been prohibited by the commission when regulators first allowed the casinos to reopen under health and safety restrictions last year. This spring, the Gaming Commission began to take notice of the 10-fold increase in complaints about the lack of legal poker in the Bay State.

Both casinos said they would make decisions about the future of poker by the end of the year.

"Where previously we had made the statement that we would make a decision on it by the end of the year, we have at least made that decision and we will move forward with a plan on how to return it within that quarter," Miller said, rounding out what ended up being a discussion of less than two minutes.

Players can expect about 10 to 12 tables instead of the 28 that used to populate the casino's poker room, Miller said.

Encore Boston Harbor told the Gaming Commission in late July that a reintroduction of poker would require the casino to close other table games because it cannot find enough people to hire as dealers. An Encore executive also said the former poker room is now filled with "some of our highest-performing slot machines."

Poker is different from many other games in that gamblers play against (and win money from or lose it to) each other rather than the casino. Instead of the casino generating revenue by winning a game, as it usually does, casinos generally profit off poker by claiming a rake, or a percentage of cash game pots and tournament entry fees.

Poker rooms at casinos are "somewhat notorious for their inability to produce competitive levels of profit per square foot," researcher Anthony Lucas wrote in a paper published in the UNLV Gaming Research & Review Journal in 2013. Around the country, other operators have decided not to offer poker, Bruce Band, the assistant director of the commission's Investigations and Enforcement Bureau and chief of the Gaming Agents Division, told commissioners last month.

Even without poker, Encore Boston Harbor raked in a record-high $59million in gambling revenue in July and MGM Springfield had its best month since before Encore opened in June 2019, counting $23.71 million in gambling revenue. Combined with $12.95 million in monthly revenue at Plainridge Park Casino, July produced a record $27 million in gambling taxes and fees for the state.

FRESNO, Calif. (KGPE) Fresnos Club One Casino got the green light to move to its new home in Granite Park on Thursday, but Fresno City Council allowed it to go ahead with a restriction in place.

Councilmembers are allowing owner Kyle Kirkland just 31 of his proposed 51 tables for the first 90 days, at which point theyll consider granting the additional 20. The decision comes after surrounding residents raised concerns of increased traffic, crime and alcohol consumption.

I told the team hey listen, lets just get going weve got to prove ourselves over the next 90 days to this community. I think weve proved ourselves to Fresno generally. Heard a lot of nice positive things from folks and you know were going to show it to Granite Park as well, Kirkland said.

Kirkland said not being able to launch his full operation will hinder their nonprofit work, and hell only be able to bring back about 170 employees of 300.

Councilmember Garry Bredefeld was the lone no vote on the proposal. He said this was because he wanted the card room to get the full 51 tables.

Once again this council has delayed potentially 130 people coming back to work 90 days more on a whim, to see if basically (Kirkland is) a good actor. What an outrage, he said.

Mayor Jerry Dyer vouched for Kirklands downtown location, saying police never had issues. But several councilmembers wanted to make sure the same will be true for the businesss new home.

We respect the fact that maybe this neighborhood they dont know us as well and we take that as a challenge, Kirkland said.

Club One Casino needs to go through a few more inspections to officially reopen. Kirkland doesnt have a set date but said it will be in the next few weeks.
