Double Helix Dash 2012 highlights
April 10, 2012 The inaugural Double Helix Dash 5K and 1-mile Twilight Run, hosted by the HudsonAlpha Institute for Biotechnology, was a great success thanks to tremendous community response. Approximately 400 runners signed up for the race before registration closed. More than 150 others participated in the 1-mile event. The 5K started at 5:30 pm Tuesday, followed by the 1-mile at 6:30. The crowd enjoyed a light breeze and temperatures in the upper 60s. The overall winner for the men was Erik Debolt of Madison. The 29-year-old finished at 17:22. Huntsville #39;s Candace Jacobs, 31, was the first female to cross the finish line, coming in at 18:52. The Double Helix Dash was one of many community events promoted through Healthy Huntsville 2012, an initiative designed to raise awareness about obesity and type 2 diabetes. Proceeds from the run supported research efforts at HudsonAlpha. Event partners included the City of Huntsville, Fleet Feet and Huntsville Track Club; sponsors included Regions Bank, McDonald #39;s, The Links, Inc., Colsa, Pearce Construction, 4 Site Incorporated, Star Market and Dynetics. Professors Ete Chan and Clinton Rubin in the Department of Biomedical Engineering at Stony Brook University believe if the same effect can be found in people, daily exposure to such vibrations could have clinical benefits for people suffering from a wide ranges of immune problems related to obesity.
