American Heart Association reports telltale visible signs of aging may predict heart disease – Video

American Heart Association reports telltale visible signs of aging may predict heart disease
If you look old, your heart may feel old, according to research presented at the American Heart Association #39;s Scientific Sessions 2012. In a new study, those who had three to four aging signs mdash; receding hairline at the temples, baldness at the head #39;s crown, earlobe crease, or yellow fatty deposits around the eyelid (xanthelasmata) mdash; had a 57 percent increased risk for heart attack and a 39 percent increased risk for heart disease. "The visible signs of aging reflect physiologic or biological age, not chronological age, and are independent of chronological age," said Anne Tybjaerg-Hansen, MD, the study #39;s senior author and professor of clinical biochemistry at the University of Copenhagen in Denmark. Researchers analyzed 10885 participants 40 years and older (45 percent women) in the Copenhagen Heart Study. Of these, 7537 had frontoparietal baldness (receding hairline at the temples), 3938 had crown top baldness, 3405 had earlobe crease, and 678 had fatty deposits around the eye. In 35 years of follow-up, 3401 participants developed heart disease and 1708 had a heart attack.From:mastercreator1000Views:0 0ratingsTime:01:24More inScience Technology

The Toxicology Of Carbon Nanotubes – Video

The Toxicology Of Carbon Nanotubes
ll4.me The Toxicology Of Carbon Nanotubes The widespread and increasing use of carbon nanotubes in scientific and engineering research and their incorporation into manufactured goods has urged an assessment of the risks and hazards associated with exposure to them. The field of nanotoxicology studies the toxicology of nanoparticles such as carbon nanotubes and has become a major growth area aimed towards risk assessment of nanoparticles. Compiled by a team of leading experts at the forefront of research, this is the first book dedicated to the toxicology of carbon nanotubes. It provides state-of-the-science information on how and why they are so potentially dangerous if breathed in, including their similarities to asbestos. The book examines various aspects of carbon nanotubes, from their manufacture and aerodynamic behaviour to their effects at molecular level in the lungs. It is invaluable to the many groups involved with research in this area, as well as to regulators and risk assessors. Marine Biogeochemical Cycles - Open University,
ll4.me Marine Biogeochemical Cycles - Open University, This Volume belongs to a series on Oceanography. It is designed so that it can be read on its own, or used as a supplement in oceanogrphy courses. After a brief introduction to sea-floor sediments, the book shows how the activities of marine organisms cycle nutrients and other dissolved constituents within the oceans, and influence the rates at which both solid and dissolved material is removed to sediments. It goes on to review the carbonate system and shows how sediments that come from continental areas may be transported to the deep sea, explores what sea-floor sediments have taught us about the history of the oceans, and describes the biological and chemical processes that continue long after sediments have been deposited on the deep sea-floor.Author: University,, Open Publisher: Butterworth-Heinemann Illustration: N Language: ENG Title: Marine Biogeochemical Cycles Pages: 00130 (Encrypted PDF) On Sale: 2005-05-31 SKU-13/ISBN: 9780750667937 Category: Science : Life Sciences - Biochemistry This Volume belongs to a series on Oceanography. Students launch new social network for pets

Two animal-loving PhD students from Massey University have launched a new social network for pets. Called Petsnearby, the website grew out of conversations the duo had while working long hours in the labs at the Universitys Institute of Natural Sciences.

Mack Saraswat, a biochemistry PhD candidate, and fellow student Ralph Grand, who is working towards a PhD in genetics, found they shared a love of animals.

"I think we were just talking and we discovered we both loved animals," says Mr Saraswat. "I had a pet cat, Ralph has a pet cat, and we wanted to create something cool, something that would connect people through their pets."

Three others were brought on board to help turn the idea into a reality: another lab member, German physicist Lutz Gehlen; Indian businessman Sharif Zamir; and Mr Grands brother, Remo Grand, a designer and website developer. The start-up company was also assisted by the ecentre, Massey Universitys onsite business incubator.

The website is unique in that it is both a social network and a comprehensive database of services, including Council-approved dog parks, veterinary clinics and pet stores throughout New Zealand. There are plans to include pet-friendly cafes and hotels, as well as breeders, and health and fitness services in the future.

While the database information can be publicly accessed, those who create an account can use geo-location to find pet services in their area, or other like-minded pet owners to converse with, or even meet up with. Another unique feature is the ability to have more than one pet per account.

"The pet owner has the account, but they can add multiple pets - all other sites we know of require you to create a completely new profile for every pet," explains Mr Grand. "Whats really different about Petsnearby, though, is the interaction can be between the pets, or between the account owners. Two dogs can have a conversation about meeting up for a play date, or the owners can talk to each other directly."

He says that part of the sites attraction for users is the possibility "you can find a date for your dog, and potentially for yourself".

While PhD studies in genetics and biochemistry seem a world away from pets socialising online, Mr Saraswat says the data analysis skills have been extremely handy while developing the Petsnearby website.

"Were used to dealing with a lot of statistics and we have a physicist on the team who can come up with cool algorithms. As a group we like to meet, throw ideas around, and solve them mathematically," he says.

Skimmer – A Question of Degree – Video

Skimmer - A Question of Degree
Skimmer are a pop punk band from Birmingham, formed in 1993. This song is from their 1998 album "Vexed", released by Crackle! records. Lyrics: How can I tell Laura D who studies biochemistry/ That someone in molecular genetics really fancies her/ It #39;s all a question of degree/ And there #39;s a science block between her and I. Where to start?/ With a smile or with a card?/ I can #39;t vent my spleen/ until I #39;ve learnt what that means. I don #39;t write poetry and what I say is usually best unsaid/ My words get jumbled up and come out wrong or slurred/ So I #39;ve got no easy answers in my head/ Wish I #39;d done literature instead. But if I break things down/ to the nth, be protein/ Then I #39;d change more to her taste/ Be her friendFrom:Alex IossifidisViews:0 0ratingsTime:01:37More inMusic
