Dr. Gregory Weiss is an Associate Professor in the Departments of Chemistry, Molecular Biology and Biochemistry at UC Irvine. A Californian who grew up in Palos Verdes, Dr. Weiss attended UC Berkeley as an undergraduate. He moved East for graduate school, attending Harvard University and graduating with a Ph.D. in chemistry and chemical biology in 1997. His experience with industry includes post-doctoral training at Genentech, where he worked on dissecting interactions between human growth hormone and its receptor. Currently he collaborates with Molecular Express, Inc. on the development of electrochemical sensors. Dr. Weiss moved to UC Irvine in 2000, where his laboratory uses viruses to decipher general rules about biological processes and pioneers new anti-viral methods. The recipient of numerous awards, he is most proud to have been named the 2008 Outstanding Professor in the School of Physical Sciences at UC Irvine by the graduating senior class. He currently leads the Weiss Laboratory at UCI that includes 14 post-doctoral fellows, graduate and undergraduate students. How Italian Violins Were Made - Joseph Nagyvary
Joseph Nagyvary, born in April 18, 1934, is a Professor Emeritus at Texas A M University and has spent years studying and analyzing violins made by Antonio Stradivari and Giuseppe Guarneri. From 1952-1956 he attended at Eötvös Loránd University of Budapest and in 1957 he went to Zurich to study under Paul Karrer. There he became fascinated by the violin when he had the opportunity to take lessons on an instrument once owned by one of his heroes, Albert Einstein. In 1963 he went to Cambridge to study under Alexander Todd at the laboratory there. He moved to America in 1964 and in 1968 he moved to Texas where he became a professor of biochemistry and biophysics at Texas A M University. In 1983 he devoted his research entirely to the study of recreating the legendary tone of violins made by the old masters. While working at Texas A M University as a biochemist Nagyvary succeeded in making a violin which he described as being somewhere near the quality of a Stradivari. She has been trained in ballet, tap, jazz, and Bharatanatyam, an ancient form of Indian classical dance that consists of telling stories and descriptions about Hindu mythology through movements, poses, and hand gestures. She has been learning Bharatanatyam for nine years, and loves presenting her dance and culture at various venues, including temples, school events, and community functions. Along with performing, Akshara enjoys spending time with her friends and family and is actively involved in her school and community. As the Vice-President of Wilson #39;s Key Club and a member of Student Government, she has participated in many fundraising and volunteering efforts both in and around Wilson.
