NEWCASTLE: Lifesavers watch the coastline on Sunday after a 5m great white shark closed beaches.
SOURCE: NEWCASTLE HERALD
LIFESAVERS continue to pore over the city's coastline on Sunday morningafter a five-metre great white shark closed all Newcastle's beaches on Saturday.
All Newcastle Beaches were shut on Saturday afternoon following the sighting.
Nobbys and Stockton have re-opened on Sunday morning.
Initially, Newcastle was the only beach remaining open as the strip from Bar Beach to Merewether was closed following the initial sighting at 1pm.
Lifeguards spotted a five-metre Great White around 1pm and promptly pulled swimmers from the water.
The entire coastline was closed after asecond alarm, at Newcastle beach, sounded about 4.30pm.
Beaches will remain closed, possibly into Sunday morning, if the shark remains in the region.

Beach battles: Jubail residents criticize shisha-smoking beach-goers (Photo: Rolf Vennenbernd/AFP/Getty Images)
IT is my right to enjoy a clean beach was the motto of a recent campaign started by several Jubail residents against beach-goers who smoke shisha, or hubble-bubble, on the citys beaches.
The smokers are accused of polluting beaches with discarded coal and of denying others the right to enjoy a clean and smoke-free environment.
Speaking to Alsharq newspaper, local resident Abu Abdulrahman recalled an incident several days ago during which he and his family members were forced to leave the beach when they noticed a number of people preparing and getting ready to smoke shisha.
I was forced to leave the place immediately because I dont want my children around people who smoke.
The supervisory bodies in charge of beaches should crack down on any type of smoking on the seafront, he said.
According to Abdullah Al-Suwailim, another resident, families are staying away from beaches due to the presence of shisha smokers.
Despite the common belief that shisha is less harmful than cigarettes, said ENT consultant at Jubail General Hospital Dr. Ali Al-Najdi, there is a link between shisha smoke and lip cancer.
Al-Najdi said aside from lip cancer, shisha smokers can contract cancers of the mouth and urinary bladder.
While no official statistics are available on the number of shisha smokers in the Kingdom, estimates put the number of male and female Saudi shisha smokers at around 6 million.

It has been three months since Boca Raton began providing beachgoers surfside amenities, making the city's public beaches among the last in the tri-county area to start offering them.
So how much money has resulted so far from renting beach chairs and umbrellas? City records show $52,726 has changed hands in the first three months. Councilman Scott Singer said he was pleased with the progress.
"So far, the feedback has been mostly and strongly positive," Singer said.
For the first year, Oceanside Beach Service, the city's chosen concessionaire, will pay Boca Raton at least $54,000 to sell products on the beach, plus 15 percent of any amount over $350,000 in sales.
The rentals program began after City Council members grew concerned that beachgoers were bypassing Boca for beaches where families would not have to haul all the items needed for the day.
The first month that Oceanside Beach Service started offering beach chair and umbrella rentals in October on Boca's beaches, the rentals generated $31,561.04 in sales. The sales then dropped to $10,714.90 for November and then $10,450.66 in December.
Singer said he wasn't concerned about the falloff in sales that has occurred in the second and third months of the beach business. The first month likely spiked because a number of beachgoers bought into yearlong membership to use the beach furniture, he said.
Still, the limited number of products available far fewer than the concessionaire's contract with the city calls for has city officials concerned enough to ask for a specific time frame for when items such as drinks, snacks and boogie boards might be available.
Mike Woika, Boca's assistant city manager, said that city officials hope to meet with Oceanside sometime this coming week to firm up plans for more items to be offered for sale. At first, Oceanside said it would start selling more items two weeks after the opening Oct. 1.
"Everyone knew there was going to be a transition period from when they first started," Woika said. "We're looking for that transition to start taking place."

Those with their own brollies will not be allowed to sit where they please Officials to set aside 10% of space at each of the island's popular beaches Scheme to be tested first at Kata beach before it is rolled out elsewhere

Tourists who bring their own parasols to popular beaches on the picturesque Thai island of Phuket are being forced to sit in designated areas under a pilot project announced this week.
Holidaymakers who take the bring-your-own-umbrella approach will not be allowed to sit wherever they please amid ongoing complaints about clutter on beaches.
Provincial officials are testing the idea of setting aside 10 per cent of space at each of the islands most popular beaches for umbrellas and hired mats, Phuketwan reported.
Tourists relax on Kata beach as local officials measure one of the designated zones for umbrellas
Umbrellas will be restricted to just 10 per cent of Phuket beaches under a new pilot project
The scheme will be tested first at Kata beach before it is rolled out at other beaches, including all of those in the Phuket city district.
Somkiet Sangkaosutthirak, Phukets vice-governor, and baffled tourists watched on Wednesday as officials marked an area measuring 32ft by 82ft.

The Isle of Man can stake a claim to having the cleanest beaches in Britain.
That's the claim from a local charity that has organised the clear up of tens of thousands of items of rubbish from Manx beaches during 2014.
Beach Buddies was founded by Bill Dale and had almost 3,000 volunteers in action last year, when it was registered as a charity.
Bill said: 'Our volunteers have done an absolutely amazing job in the last twelve months, and we genuinely believe we now have the best and cleanest beaches in Britain. Based on what we know from first hand reports elsewhere, the Isle of Man is a long way ahead of what is happening around Britain, so this is a claim we believe the Island should now be making and throw down a challenge to the rest of the British Isles.'
Volunteers have removed thousands of bags of rubbish and large items including oil drums, floats and fishing gear.
Bill said last January's storms were a blessing in disguise in terms of beach cleaning.
He said: 'Although the storms sadly caused major damage in some areas, the exceptional weather also unearthed large amounts of rubbish which had gathered under sand dunes. In the first few months of the year we collected huge amounts of rubbish which was clearly very old, some dating back a very long time.
'Without the storms, this would have remained hidden under the sand dunes, so in some parts of the Island such as the northwest coast, the weather actually helped us.'

Surf lifesaving, rolling waves and white beaches, the Australian government tells backpackers and other tourists, are very much at the heart of how we see ourselves.
"Surfing and the beachdo not discriminate," the australia.gov.au website says.
This was Palm Beach as imagined by the rest of Sydney.
"They bring together a diverse range of people. Unlike other places around the world that have privately owned beaches, in Australia the beach is a public place. John Pilger, in his book A Secret Country , says, 'there are no proprietorial rights on an Australian beach' and there is 'a shared assumption of tolerance for each other'."

And then there is Palm Beach.

The curiously coarse red, gold sand lying between the rock pool to the south and the majesty of Barrenjoey to the north may be in public hands but a certain proprietorial right has existed since the first subdivisions attracted Sydney's most wealthy who had the time, money and cars to make the end of the northern beaches their own private paradise.
They established the Palm Beach Surf Life Saving Club in 1921 and it has bound their sense of privileged noblesse oblige ever since.
