CLAYLongtime Green Cove Springs public servant dies
Lee Bentley, former Green Cove Springs city clerk, passed away Monday, Jan. 26, after battling cancer. Bentley provided 29 years of dedicated service to the city in many capacities including most recently as city clerk. Known for his extensive knowledge and passion for local history, Bentley also was president of the Clay County Historical Society. Funeral arrangements are pending.

Raising the flag: John Bishop's Australia.
In 1992, John Bishop undertook the mammoth feat of cycling from Sydney back to his home in Liverpool, England. Since then he's become one of Britain's most-loved comics on the back of his dry anecdotes and observations about life and his family. Last year, at age 47, he revisited the Sydney to Cairns leg of the trip, cycling with a BBC camera crew in tow over eight weeks, tackling beaches, bikies and koalas with chlamydia.
How did the original trip come about and why retrace it?
In 1992, I was going out with a girl and I didn't want to get married so I came up with this idea that I'd do my last big adventure, which was to ride a bicycle back from Australia. It took me 10 months and when I got home, I married her [wife of 22 years, Melanie], but you would do if you spent 10 months on a bicycle, you'd marry anyone. Then when I got into showbusiness and the life that I lead now, Australia was something that kept nagging at me - it was unfinished business because I'd never been since. When you travel with a camera crew, it gives you access to things you don't get otherwise. There were parts of Australia I skirted through last time, this time I was able to embed myself in - that was the thing I was looking for.
On the road: John Bishop recreated a cycling trip he did 22 years earlier.
The scenes with the koala being tested for chlamydia are pretty gruesome. Did you know what you would be facing?

No. And what surprised me was that I'd neven been that close to one and I've got an Englishman's view of a koala, I think it's a small little cuddly thing but they're massive. I mean, that was like a man in a koala suit, this big bloke lying down.
What do you want the program to reflect about Australia?
The impression I had of Australia in 1992 is the same I left with now. It's the people. I just think the people are amazing, there's a real warmth and friendliness. We did the stereotypical things, the snakes, the spiders and stuff, but when you get further into the series it's the people that dominate. You can travel wherever you want to in the world and you will always connect with somebody but in Australia it feels like you connect with everybody.

Shark activity has marred the summer beach season, with Newcastle beaches closed for a record 10 days this month as a 5 metre great white shark swam close to shore. Photo: CLINTON DUFFY
Premier Mike Baird has pledged to boost public protection against shark attacks with a trial of cutting edge sonar detecting technology at NSW beaches if the Liberal and Nationals government is re-elected in March.
In Mr Baird's first election policy commitment, he said $100,000 would be spent on a technology trial at popular beaches. Surf life saving clubs will also be given specialist training and shark deterrent equipment.
"One thing we will not be doing in NSW is culling sharks," said Mr Baird."Instead, as well as continuing measures that have already proved successful, today I announce we will unleash new technology to make our beaches even safer for swimmers."
Three NSW swimmers or surfers have been killed by shark attacks in the past 18 months.

An apparent increase in shark activity has marred the summer beach season, with Newcastle beaches closed for a record 10 days this month as a 5 metre great white shark swam close to shore.
Sydney's Bondi Beach has been repeatedly closed after shark sightings, and two great white sharks were pulled from the Bondi nets within days as the first beach weather beckoned swimmers in November.
A teenager was hospitalised after a shark attack near Mollymook Beach on the south coast a fortnight ago.
Mr Baird said there are 51 shark nets from Newcastle to Wollongong, and NSW beaches were among the safest in the country, but "we can always do more".

They're peppered along the Pacific: pretty pockets of green and gold.
Every family has a favourite but it's our patriotic duty to discover the full bounty of beaches along the New South Wales coast.
Over Christmas, we did our Griswold/Modern Family motor-home trip from Sydney to Brisbane (which will be explored in greater detail in a story I'm writing entitled, "It's a Miracle We're Still Married").
Here are our Top 5 Bonza Beaches:
Urunga
Yes, I know it sounds like an infection. But it's actually a picturesque town, where the Bellinger and Kalang rivers meet the sea, south of Coffs Harbour. We arrived at the North Coast Holiday Park at sunset to a glorious view of the gilded sea. It was five minutes' walk to the Ocean View Hotel, where they served swordfish caught that day. The following morning, I paddle-boarded on the river, while the kids climbed the casuarina trees. It was bliss.
Kids' best bit: "The playground at the holiday park."

Vancouver Coastal Health wants to see local beaches exempt from a proposal by Transport Canada that suggests small pleasure boats be allowed to dump their sewage closer to shore.
Medical health officer Dr. Mark Lysyshyn said such a move, which is still in the public consultation phase, could potentially increase the occurrence of E. coli in local waters and lead to more frequent closures of the areas beaches. Under Transport Canadas plan, small boats carrying fewer than 15 people would be allowed to discharge sewage just one nautical mile from shore, closer than the three nautical miles that are required today.
One nautical mile is roughly the distance between Sunset and Kitsilano beaches, Lysyshyn said.
Last summer was one of the worst for E. coli at local beaches, Lysyshyn said, with West Vancouver beaches closed for much of August and favourites like Sunset Beach posting beach closed signs.
This concerned us because we dont know to what degree the water quality at the beaches is affected by small boats but thats part of the equation, Lysyshyn said. We just felt like this wasnt the right direction to go. The West Vancouver beaches were closed for almost four weeks, almost all of August, exactly when people would want to swim.
We typically have (high) counts in False Creek but this was a new problem.
Lysyshyn, in conjunction with Metro Vancouver municipalities, has sent a letter to Transport Canada outlining Vancouver Coastal Healths concerns with the proposal, which is among a series of amendments to Transport Canadas Vessel Pollution and Dangerous Chemical Regulations.
Lysyshyn notes its very difficult to police small vessels and is asking Transport Canada to maintain the status quo.
Wed like to work with them to have the beaches around our district, in Burrard Inlet, as a no-discharge area, Lysyshyn said, adding beaches are seen as great areas for recreation and physical activities. He noted municipalities, which are responsible for maintaining local beaches as well as sewage collection, have an economic incentive to keep the areas clean.
High levels of bacteria are usually blamed on fecal contamination from human or animal sources.
