Best beaches for 2015, according to travelers

Boracay Island in the Philippines.

By Jessica Plautz2015-02-18 08:29:04 UTC

If you're in the northeastern United States, a warm beach any beach, really is sounding pretty good right now.

But not all beaches are created equal, and that's where crowdsourcing comes in: On Tuesday, TripAdvisor released a list of the best rated beaches around the world, according to its users.

The top beaches located around the globe are "determined based on the quantity and quality of traveler reviews and ratings" over 12 months, according to the site. If their ratings over the past year are any indication, these beaches will be the perfect destination for a 2015 getaway.

Elafonissi, off the southwestern coast of Crete, is designated a nature reserve. The island greets visitors with clear water and pink sand, although if you are looking for a warm winter getaway this is not the beach for you. The best times to visit are from late May to early October.

The Whitsundays are a chain of 74 islands off the northeast coast of Australia's Queensland territory; Whitehaven is on the largest island.

"The crystal clear aqua waters and pristine silica sand of Whitehaven stretch over seven kilometres along Whitsunday Island," according to the local tourism authority which is, of course, required to sing the beach's praises. "As soon as you arrive its easy to see why it is the most photographed beach in Australia."

North East beaches snubbed by TripAdvisor in 2015 Traveller Awards

VIEW GALLERY

North East tourism chiefs say travellers are missing out after the regions iconic beaches were snubbed by TripAdvisor users.

No stretches of coastline in Northumberland, Durham, North or South Tyneside made the European or UK top 25 lists in the 2015 Travellers Choice Awards.

The winners are generated from reviews posted on the website, with Woolacombe beach in Devon claiming first place domestically, fourth in Europe and 13th in the worlds top beach table.

Wednesdays snub came a day after its attractions performed poorly in the second round of VisitEngland accolades in recognition of quality visitor experience, including welcome awards, hidden gems, best told story, quality caf and a gold rating for top-scoring attractions.

Of 57 English attractions, Durhams Oriental Museum was the only in the North East to be selected, while four made the grade in Cumbria.

A spokeswoman for North Tyneside Council said weather may have been behind the snub.

Bamburgh Beach and castle

She said: TripAdvisor regularly has great things to say about our businesses, parks, opens spaces and beaches, but sadly we dont always have the lovely weather enjoyed on the beaches in the European Top 25, especially those on the Islands of Sicily, in the Balearics and the Greek islands.

But she added: Were immensely proud of our beautiful and award-winning beaches. They are hugely popular with residents and have been consistently recognised regionally, nationally and internationally.

Meals on Wheels of the Palm Beaches now delivering pet food

Mary St. Clair says she'd go without food if that's what it took to feed her 3-month-old kitten.

Luckily, she doesn't have to. For the past eight months, the 77-year-old Lake Worth woman, who can't get around on her own and lives on Social Security, has gotten warm meals delivered five days a week by Meals on Wheels volunteers.

And now, her cat rescued from outside her Lake Worth home gets food deliveries, too.

"Oh, it makes it so much easier," St. Clair said, "because I don't have to worry about how to get food for him."

She's one of the first to sign up for a pet program that Meals on Wheels of the Palm Beaches is rolling out this month. Called Animeals, it's funded by a $2,500 grant from the Banfield Charitable Trust a nonprofit arm of a pet hospital and provides free pet food to Meals on Wheels clients who have cats or dogs.

So far, about five of the 100 homebound senior citizens who rely on the local Meals on Wheels have signed up to receive pet food.

The nonprofit, a branch of the national organization, started four years ago and recently expanded into the Lake Worth area. It delivers about 26,000 meals annually.

Many of the seniors who receive meals are isolated and have little companionship aside from their pets, said Debbie Emerick, director of volunteer services for the local Meals on Wheels. Their cats and dogs make all the difference in their lives, but they can be expensive to feed and care for.

"Pets are natural anti-depressants, I like to say," Emerick said. "So to support that companionship just helps their overall quality of life in measures."

Similar pet food delivery programs are offered by other Meals on Wheels branches, including the one in Broward County. Emerick learned of the Banfield grant at a national Meals on Wheels conference and applied soon after. When the grant runs out, she plans to keep Animeals going through community support.
