G4T New York is not finished RANT.avi – Video

G4T New York is not finished RANT.avi
Please! everything you hear may not be true. We will get through this mess. NY is not finished yet. But I will let you know when it is finished. We have been through many storms and will get by this one too. There are many good stories and I will go out tomorrow and film some. There are some areas that wont be rebuilt. The barrier beaches are very bad shape and I am worry about future hurricanes. With the barrier beaches just about gone there is no longer protection from the surf. Sorry for the rant. Rebuilt beaches, museum thrive after Sandy

Nags Head, N.C. The beating from Hurricane Sandy's wind and waves tore up many beaches along North Carolina's coast last weekend, but Nags Head is reaping the dividend of building up its beaches long before Sandy hit.

Officials spent more than $30 million last year to renourish about 10 miles of beach in Nags Head, and residents say the hotly debated project can now be viewed only as a wise investment.

"It was a good move," said Charlotte Zorc, who has lived on the Outer Banks almost 30 years. "It just proves what happened with Hurricane Sandy that our beaches are looking great and a lot of houses that may have gone in the ocean are saved."

Zorc said she's relieved her granddaughters can play on the beach in Nags Head days after Sandy passed without having to worry about storm debris. Other Nags Head homeowners share her support of the five-month beach renourishment, which used tons of sand to create a buffer several feet high between the ocean and the town.

"From walking a mile to the pier, everything looks really good," Bonnie Snyder said. "In the past, (storms would) take stairways and beach. So, I think it was a positive."

Town Manager Cliff Ogburn said the project is already repaying Nags Head, which doesn't have to spending money on storm recovery.

"No water lines were damaged. No streets were damaged," Ogburn said. "We were extremely thrilled with the project and how it stood up to the winds of Sandy."

The Outer Banks Children@Play Museum in nearby Kitty Hawk didn't fare as well after Sandy sent several feet of water rushing through it and several other businesses along U.S. Highway 158 Bypass.

Director Alyssa Hannon said Wednesday that she was devastated when she saw the damage to all of the fledgling museum's exhibits, but she expressed confidence that the community wouldn't let the museum fold and would help it rebuild.

Hannon's confidence was rewarded Friday when local businessman Harvey Hess Jr. offered her a lighthouse-shaped building next to his Capt'n Franks hot dog restaurant for the museum.

Post-Sandy travel report from the beaches to the Big Apple

Hurricane Sandy stirred up buckets of sand and water along the East Coast last week. The storm was no friend of the beaches or the city. New York was hit hard, with a swath of Manhattan going from dry to wet, illuminated to black, in a matter of hours.

Recovery teams are working full force and conditions are changing with each tick of the clock. Heres a status report on some travel destinations swiped by Sandys massive paw.

Rehoboth Beach, Del.

City Manager Greg Ferrese has a long list of what didnt happen, starting with no damage to the boardwalk or oceanfront businesses. Asked about beach erosion, he admitted to a depleted stock but added, The beach replenishment project was our lifesaver. Well rebuild by May.

Cape May, N.J.

Sandy barely blew a kiss to the Victorian-chic resort town. Some ocean water spilled onto Beach Avenue, but crews have been clearing away the sand and debris. Jean Barraclough, marketing director of the Mid-Atlantic Center for the Arts, said the Emlen Physick Estate and Cape May Lighthouse were untouched, and the World War II Lookout Tower sustained only minor water damage. The organization plans to resume tours this weekend.

Atlantic City

Rest easy: The section of boardwalk that crumbled wasnt part of the boardwalk. It belonged to a northern structure that runs along the inlet between AC and Brigantine and was already scheduled for demolition. Liza Cartmell, president of the Atlantic City Alliance, said that most of the damage seemed to occur in residential sections, though the inlet and bay waters did stream into some Tangier Outlet shops. The main thoroughfare in the oceanfront area and the casinos were not impacted significantly, she said.

Overall, infrastructure is solid, said Tom Gilbert, district commander of Atlantic City Tourism. If I took you up to the boardwalk, he said, you never would have said there was a storm.

Casinos and hotels are eager to reopen, but they must wait for officials to restore the streetlights and certify water safety. At press time Thursday, they were also waiting for Gov. Chris Christie to lift the state of emergency, the green light to resume business.

New Storm Brewing Could Threaten Sandy-Damaged Beaches

With coastal communities in New York and New Jersey still reeling from the devastation caused by Hurricane Sandy, the last thing the area needs is another storm. But that's exactly what it might get.

A nor'easter is predicted to potentially hit the East Coast next Wednesday (Nov. 7), and beach erosion experts are concerned about further damage to shorelines devastated by Sandy.

As Sandy came ashore, its record surge and pounding waves tore apart or eroded hundreds of miles of dunes and protective sea walls along the East Coast. Hundreds of homes and buildings, which also provided some protection, were destroyed.

The lack of protective dunes and damage to sea walls could lead to lowland flooding near the coast, depending on the wind direction and storm surge from the new storm, even one that isn't expected to approach Sandy's strength.

"The beaches and sand dunes are the first line of defense for coastal communities against storm surge and waves. They're going to take the first brunt of the storms," said Hilary Stockdon, a research oceanographer with the U.S. Geological Survey in Reston, Va. [Infograpic: Timeline of Sandy's Week of Destruction]

First line of defense

Many of the sandy beaches along the Atlantic Coast have become increasingly vulnerable to significant impacts due to erosion during past storms, including Hurricanes Ida (2009) and Irene (2011), as well as large storms in 2005 and 2007, according to the USGS.

Stockdon said Sandy caused extensive erosion to beaches and dunes. The USGS and other agencies are now running aerial and ground surveys to assess the damage.

"There are dunes that have been eroded away completely, so now their protection is gone," Stockdon told OurAmazingPlanet. "That will make these communities more vulnerable to future storms that may not be as strong."

Quick repair and restoration of the coast could be essential to minimizing damage from future storms, whether the one currently brewing or any others that could develop later in the winter. In New York, the Department of Environmental Conservation is issuing emergency permits for storm-related repairs in coastal areas and wetlands.
