The Best Beaches of 2013 Announced

Frequented by the rich and famous, Main Beach in East Hampton on Long Island, N.Y., has been named the top beach of 2013.

Though battered by Super Storm Sandy and other winter storms, the beach has largely recovered, said Stephen Leatherman, also know as "Dr. Beach," director of Florida International University's Laboratory for Coastal Research in Miami.

In its 23rd year, the Top 10 Best Beaches list, put together by Dr. Beach, was announced Thursday night (May 23). [See Photos of the Top Beaches of 2013]

Though other parts of the beach were eroded by the storms, East Hampton's pavilion is located several hundred feet from the water's edge and was little affected by the severe weather.

"The big, wide sandy beach made of quartz has towering sand dunes, and beautiful clean and clear blue water," according to Leatherman. In addition to the natural wonders, Main Beach is a great place to spot celebs. Biking is the best way to get around to avoid parking hassles.

Long Island Beach Named 'Best' on 2013 Top Ten Beaches List

HAUPPAUGE, NY--(Marketwired - May 24, 2013) - For the second time in three years a beach in Long Island has taken the number one spot on the annual Top Ten Beaches list by noted coastal expert Dr. Stephen P. Leatherman (aka Dr. Beach), a college professor who visits and rates the best U.S. beaches.

Main Beach in East Hampton was named "Best Beach" 2013 on the annual Top Ten list, which includes some of the best U.S. beaches in Florida, Hawaii, the Carolinas and Massachusetts.Coopers Beach in Southampton was named Top Beach in 2010.

A lovely example of Long Island's 100-plus miles of pristine ocean beach coastline, Main Beach was cited for its sparkling surf, idyllic setting, white sand, water temperature, and cleanliness on a list of 50 criteria.

The honor is especially noteworthy considering the challenges the beaches in Long Island overcame in preparation for summer following a severe storm season that took its toll on local beaches and communities.

"This beach was heavily eroded by Super Storm Sandy and subsequent winter storms, yet it has largely recovered.The proud pavilion at Main Beach was little affected because it was set back several hundred feet from the water's edge," Dr. Leatherman said.

East Hampton is a quaint village that dates back to the 1640s. At the latter half of the 19th century it became a noted artists' colony. Today it is home to many celebrities and NY residents who have built large summer estates that complement the agrarian and historic character of the area. One of the most enjoyable ways to get around town is bicycling, which also avoids paying the pricey parking fee, Dr. Leatherman said.

Beaches Make Comeback Seven Months After Sandy

As many beaches hit by Superstorm Sandy are ready to reopen, some homes are still uninhabitable.

By the time storm Sandy wound down last fall, it was clear that some of the most popular coastal state park beaches in southern New England were all but destroyed.

In Connecticut and Rhode Island, the storm sent a surge of water so powerful that in places it washed many thousands of cubic yards of sand from beaches into parking lots, park roads and picnic areas.

While parts of New Jersey and New York were hardest hit by the historic storm, coastal damage in southern New England also was enormous. Some of the region's major beaches, like Sherwood Island State Park in Westport and Misquamicut State Beach in Westerly, R.I., took a literal pounding of historic proportions.

At Misquamicut, for example, which is adjacent to the Connecticut border and hugely popular with Connecticut residents, the storm flushed the entire beach into the park's 3,000-space parking lot, leaving it 3 feet deep in sand. What had been the beach was left a scoured, debris-strewn mess.

Robert J. Paquette, chief of Rhode Island's Division of Parks and Recreation, estimated the volume of sand displaced at Misquamicut and adjoining beaches at 100,000 cubic yards.

Since then, in a restoration project that took three months, crews with heavy construction equipment sifted and transported the sand back to the beach.

"There was the publicity that Misquamicut was destroyed," Paquette said. "But it is ready to go. The major work is done. Patrons will see us doing some minor work in coming weeks." About 80 percent of Misquamicut beach-goers come from Connecticut, New York and New Jersey, he said.

Environmental agencies had the winter and spring to work on the beaches, so much of the work is done, although repairs and restoration at some parks will continue for months. Coastal state parks in Connecticut and Rhode Island are open for the traditional Memorial Day summer season kickoff.

As at Misquamicut, crews at Sherwood Island moved tons of sand from picnic areas, parking areas and roads and restored the beach. At East Beach alone crews had to move several thousand cubic yards of sand back to the beach.

Group issues health report card for Southern California beaches

LOS ANGELES, May 24 (UPI) -- Southern California beaches had overall good water quality last year, with most receiving good to excellent ratings, an annual report by Heal the Bay said.

The organization has been assessing water quality at more than 600 beaches on the U.S. west coast and issuing an annual report card since 1991.

Each beach is assigned an A to F grade, with higher grades denoting less risk of becoming ill while swimming at that location, the Los Angeles Times reported.

While most Southern California beaches fared well -- Heal the Bay even gave A+ grades to Hermosa Beach, Cabrillo Beach in San Pedro and the Wedge in Newport Beach -- a few were tagged with F grades, including Doheny Beach in Dana Point, Avalon Beach in Catalina and the beaches next to the piers at Redondo Beach and Malibu, the newspaper said.

Grades are often lower during periods of heavy rain, the report pointed out, but Southern California had rainfall totals well below average last winter with a resultant improvement in water quality.

"Rainstorms greatly increase the amount of urban runoff, the greatest source of bacterial pollution at local beaches," Heal the Bay officials said in a statement.
