PBC to renourish miles of beaches

PALM BEACH COUNTY - So many Palm Beach County beaches are critically eroded and in need of re-nourishment the county is asking the state to pitch in to pick up the costs of some of the work ahead.

Palm Beach County commissioners will meet next week to put together a request for funding from the state.

It's the first of many steps to complete the project.

Beaches that are up for re-nourishment span from Jupiter and Tequesta, down to Boca Raton.

Work will begin in a few months to restore the beaches. The county will spend millions of dollars to bring in sand and fix up the shoreline.

This is a large undertaking that is only done every seven to ten years on this scale.

After the re-nourishment is complete, the county will have to pay for annual upkeep.

That's why it's asking for the state to chip in as much as $2.8 million.

"Most of our beaches are as eroded as they can possibly be right now. That is all going to change come January, February. All of our beaches are going to be built out to the maximum template, which is what we want to see. If a storm like Sandy hits, we will deal with it." said Leanne Welch, with Palm Beach County Environmental Resources Management.

It will be some time before the county knows just how much of the $2.8 million is coming to Palm Beach County.

Beach Advisory in Place for Five Duluth Beaches

September 5, 2013 Updated Sep 5, 2013 at 12:23 PM CDT

Duluth, MN (NNCNOW.com) --- Five Duluth beaches have been placed under a beach advisory due to elevated E. coli levels in the water.

The following beaches have a No Water Contact Advisory: - Brighton Beach located in Duluth in Gitche Gummi Park.

- Leif Erikson Park Beach located in Duluth, below Leif Erikson Park.

- Franklin Park / 13th Street South Beach located on the lakeside of Park Point in Duluth at 13th Street.

- Minnesota Point Harborside / 15th Street Beach located on the harbor-side of Park Point in Duluth at 15th Street.

- 20th Street / Hearding Island Canal Beach located on the harbor-side of Park Point, at 20th Street.

The elevated E. coli levels could be due to the presence of fecal contamination. The water at each beach will be tested again later today.

If you become sick after coming into contact with the water at any of the beaches listed above, you are asked to call the Minnesota Health Department.

Hot weather, activity on Volusia, Flagler Beaches

Jacob Valentine, 16, of Auburndale flips on the beach during Labor Day Weekend in Daytona Beach on Sunday.

Visitors from near and far enjoyed Volusia and Flagler's beaches on Sunday, and crowds are expected to be large again Monday given the glorious weather forecast.

There is only a 30 percent chance of rain for Monday, said meteorologist Arlena Moses of National Weather Service in Melbourne. That is lower than what we expect for this time of year.

Cars lined both sides of State Road A1A in Flagler Beach, though the beach looked sparsely populated.

It's laid back here; that's what I love about it, said Bethany Linderman, who hails from Tampa.

She and her husband, Craig, have come to Flagler Beach every Labor Day weekend for the past five years. Their 3-year-old daughter

Denah has accompanied them her whole life.

I like pink, she said, as she waited to order a cone from Sally's Ice Cream.

Winter Park resident Debbie Lesser is also a frequent visitor to Flagler Beach for its down-home smallness.

I come at least twice a year, she said. Fourth of July, Labor Day and Christmas are my favorite times. There are always a lot of cute things to do, and when they have fireworks, they are better than Disney's.
