RELAXING BEACHES - A TROPICAL DAY AT THE BEACH NOW IN HD ON DVD - Video
The rolling waves of the Injambakkam beach is so tempting that S. Gunasekarans children refuse to leave the water, but the setting sun plays the spoil sport.
Packing up before dark is a rule Gunasekaran strictly follows whenever he brings his family to the beach. The beach is lovely, its less crowded than Marina and Elliots, but I am afraid to stay beyond 6.30 p.m. as the lighting is poor, says this resident of Medavakkam. It is almost two years since the Chennai Corporation added 10 new beaches to its list, but a lot needs to be done to improve the safety and amenities on the sandy coastline. For a number of people from Tambaram and adjoining neighbourhoods, these beaches are close by and thereforea quickly accessible relaxation spot. With better lighting, the beach could draw a bigger evening crowd. At Injambakkam beach, two high masts light up one stretch of the beach, but residents say it was installed by a private beach resort, which also has a life guard who ensures visitors' safety.
P. Mahalingam, who has come for an evening stroll, gives me a stern warning: The beach is not like Marina. You cannot walk in any time and there are no policemen patrolling the stretch.
Further down the coast, Neelangarai and Palavakkam beaches seem to be better lit and one can spot a few dustbins here and there. But long-time residents, who frequent the beach, say for crowd the beach attracts on weekends the progress of improvement is slow. While Neelangarai beach has benches, some green space and a walkers path, Palavakkam is yet to get such amenities.
Like the Marina beach, where the sands are cleaned with a machine, Palavakkam beach needs to be cleaned at least twice a week, says Rosey Thangaraj, a resident of Palavakkam who visits the beach twice a day. Before the Corporation took over the beach, she says, local residents used to clean some stretches of the beach, but now there is no such initiative.
Kottivakkam beach hardly has any amenities, say residents.
Lack of restrooms on a majority of the newly-added beaches prevents people from hanging out in the beach for long. Residents believe only beach beautification project can give these beaches the much needed facelift.

State denies that it promotes town as surfing destination

RYE The town's beaches have become known in recent years as prime destinations among the international surfing community, much to the chagrin of locals who want to get a handle on an unsustainable intensification of activities at the beach.
The rules and regulations for New Hampshire state parks prohibit surfing at state beaches except at designated areas at North Beach in Hampton. Yet state Sen. Nancy Stiles, R-Hampton, said at a recent meeting on beach issues that she witnessed surfers breaking that regulation at Jenness State Beach.
A resident at the meeting suggested the state is sending mixed messages by paying for advertising that promotes tourism to surfers. Amy Bassett, a spokeswoman for the Division of Parks and Recreation, countered that notion, saying the state has not spent advertising dollars on promoting the Seacoast as a surfing destination.
"We did advertising on grindtv.com to attract a more active people, luring them to New Hampshire state parks. On grindtv.com there are several different online magazines that are part of the buy," she said.
Among the online magazines that fall under grindtv.com's umbrella are surfermag.com and surfingmagazine.com. While advertisements for New Hampshire state parks may have appeared on those sites, they depicted campers, hikers and kayakers rather than anything specifically surfing-oriented, Bassett said.
"We're trying to draw anybody that has an interest in the outdoors into visiting New Hampshire state parks. It's not meant to go right to surfers by any means, because we don't even have a campaign with surfers or for the Seacoast," she said.
Nonetheless, the word is out that Rye's beaches are a great place to catch some surf. Mike Labrie, a beach commissioner in town, said a brochure was published in Canada citing the various beaches in Rye. Canadian surfing groups appear to be heavily promoting the activity in Rye, he said.

Crews clean the outside of a house overrun by cats in the Beaches on Wednesday. CITYNEWS
The outside of a house overrun by cats on a quiet Beaches street was cleaned up Wednesday.
In a CityNews story last week, neighbours said they were desperate to escape the putrid smell of cat excrement emanating from the property, located near Kingston Road.
Dozens of ravenously hungry cats had overwhelmed the inside, and outside, of the house, prompting CityNews reporter Cynthia Mulligan to liken the smell to a giant kitty litter box that hasnt been changed in months.
Area residents took matters into their own hands, trapping a total of 43 felines and handing them over to animal control, which will have them spayed, neutered, and released back into feral colonies.
That may have significantly pared down the cat population, but the mess and smell remained.
After what neighbours described as years of neglect, the issue was finally addressed Wednesday morning when a phalanx of agencies descended on the home.
The street was closed down as fire, police, animal services, the OSPCA, and four junk removal trucks showed up to begin the long-awaited cleanup.
Cats were a large part of the problem, but the property was also littered with years of accumulated junk and debris that was hauled away.
The cleanup initiative, which came after Beaches-East York Coun. Mary-Margaret McMahon arranged a meeting with the agencies, was more than welcomed by neighbours.

Swimmers headed into the waters of Tenean Beach during the annual Brian Leahy Memorial Polar Bear Plunge.
By Patrick D. Rosso, Town Correspondent
Dorchester residents praised their neighborhood's waterfront, from Tenean Beach to Savin Hill Cove, at a Wednesday meeting of the Metropolitan Beaches Commission, but they also saw room for improvement.
Formed in 2006 by the Massachusetts Legislature and made up of non-profit leaders, residents, and elected officials, the commission evaluates and critiques Department of Conservation and Recreation managed beaches from Nahant to Nantasket. It released its first report in 2007 and is now working on a follow-up, which will provide recommendations for ways to improve the recreation areas.
The 2007 report analyzed conditions at the Malibu/Savin Hill and Tenean Beaches, and concluded that the beaches are important community gathering places, that they are getting cleaner, and that they are easily accessible from public transportation.
The 2007 report, however, found that there were issues with contamination after storms, maintenance of existing facilities was lacking, and there was a need for better police enforcement.
Many at Wednesdays meeting said the beaches have been improving, but that there are still concerns about water quality, safety, and facilities.
The Save the Harbor Save the Bay 2013 Beaches Report Card found Malibu Beach in the middle of the pack when it came to overall water safety in 2012.

What do Mr. Potato Heads mustache, a baby stroller with a demons head attached, a meat thermometer and a live octopus inside a stereo speaker all have in common?
They were all items collected Saturday in the California Coastal Cleanup Day.
The event, which featured cleanup efforts in 53 of the states 58 counties and focused on picking up trash from the coastal beaches and waterways all the way to Lake Tahoe collected more than 501,748 pounds 251 tons of trash and recyclables. And thats with only 70 percent of the cleanup sites reporting their work.
Coastal Cleanup Day is always an incredible celebration of our coastal and aquatic environments, said Eben Schwartz, Marine Debris Program Manager for the California Coastal Commission, which along with the Ocean Conservancy has presented the event for the past 29 years.
This years celebration included more than 51,000 volunteers with local participants sweeping beaches in drizzly, blustery conditions.
In Santa Barbara County, 952 volunteers netted 2,545 pounds of debris on local beaches and creeks.
Included in the haul this year were Mr. Potato Heads mustache found at Butterfly Beach and an electric popcorn popper discovered at Goleta Beach.
Why would anyone want these things at the beach? Sam Dickinson, Santa Barbara County cleanup coordinator asked incredulously.
Several odd items were found on San Luis Obispo County beaches, as well. More than 1,100 volunteers at 28 sites cleared more than 54 miles of coastline.
Their discoveries included a meat thermometer, the hood of a red pickup, a mattress, a couple pairs of underwear, a machete, several strands of Christmas lights and a message in a bottle. Michael Heater, program coordinator for EcoSLO which organizes the effort, said he hadnt yet heard what was in the note.

Autumn clean-up on the beaches
1:00pm Tuesday 24th September 2013 in News By Emma Walker
VOLUNTEERS took to the beaches over the weekend to give them an autumn clean.
After a busy summer on the Dorset coast, when sun-seekers flocked to the area, teams headed to the seashore armed with bin bags and litter pickers for the Great Dorset Beach Clean.
Lyn Cooch of the Dorset Countryside coastal ranger team helped out on Chesil Beach.
She said: We have been conducting a survey of a 100-metre area on the beach to record what litter is being picked up.
The litter from these areas will then be weighed before the data is sent off.
It is a great initiative to keep our beaches clean after a busy summer.
Fishing nets, barbecues and plastic items made up a lot of the waste, with details of rubbish picked up sent to the Marine Conservation Society to add to its annual report on beach litter.
The clean-ups are organised by Dorset County Councils Country-side Ranger Service.

This article is the first in a three-part series taking a close look at erosion along the Massachusetts coastline. Staff at our WickedLocal papers up and down the coast from Cape Cod to Cape Ann are talking to experts, residents and scientists to determine if our coast is eroding away and what, if anything, can be done to stop it.
The good news: The drive to the beach may be shorter in coming years.
The bad news weve already seen. Especially last winter. Homes falling into the ocean. Beaches scoured of sand. Seawalls and jetties degraded or destroyed. Roads washed out or buried in sand and debris.
Its difficult to say if last winters damage was a seasonal fluctuation or a definite, long-term trend, say experts. Coastlines, by their nature, change. Storm patterns, too, vary.
But experts agree on one point: Sea levels are rising, increasing the likelihood of long-term coastal flooding, erosion and storm damage.
Last winter may be an outlier. Four major noreasters rocked Massachusetts from October to March. From year to year, storms vary in severity and impact. Because the commonwealths coast suffered through a severe winter last year, doesnt necessarily mean this winter will be equally severe.
At the same time, barrier beaches can be very dynamic. They can narrow and shrink for a number of years. And then they can suddenly blossom again and widen. One beach can lose significant sand, while another, not far away, can gain.
There are areas where weve seen significant erosion and others where weve seen accretion, said Bruce Carlisle, director of the Massachusetts Office of Coastal Zone Management. Between 2001 and 2008, where weve done the actual mapping, within that small decade, the shoreline has moved up and back a little bit.
Its important to distinguish between the loss of a beach and the migration of a beach or barrier island, when an entire system can respond by changing its location, said Rob Thieler, a research geologist with United States Geological Survey in Woods Hole. Sometimes coastal changes are asymmetric. There can be narrowing for a decade or two, followed by widening, depending on how the overall system is changing.
Hurricanes cause some damage, said Bill Sargent, a NOVA consultant and author of numerous books about the environment and science including Beach Wars: 10,000 Years on a Barrier Beach and The View From Strawberry Hill: Reflections on the Hottest Year on Record, but Sargent argues noreasters can actually do more damage because theyll hang around for three or four days. They linger over far more high tides than a hurricane would and thats when you get a cumulative effect.

A DRAFT plan detailing the future management of Mackay's Town and Far beaches is now available for public consultation on Mackay Regional Council's website.
To have your say, simply review the plan hereand complete the online survey by 4pm on Friday, November 1.
Alternatively, post a written submission to PO Box 41, 4740.
Beach plans identify the natural assets, issues and on-ground activities needed at each beach to protect our coast into the future.
As part of the Coasts and Communities Program (CCP), council and Reef Catchments collaborate with beach users, residents, community groups and key stakeholders to create these beach plans to protect and restore the natural environment of our coastline.
To date, 18 beach plans (out of 26 identified beaches region wide) have been adopted by council, the remaining eight are on track to be completed by mid-2014.
Activities detailed in the Town and Far beaches draft plan include a staged weed-management program, fencing to protect vegetation and define access tracks, planting native vegetation at the northern end of Quota Park and creating three new access paths.
