Lusi batters Auckland beaches

Emergency services are warning people to stay away from Auckland's northern beaches where homes are threatened as high tide peaks and ex-Cyclone Lusi causes havoc.

Lusi hit Northland on Friday night, unleashing 91mm of rain near Whangarei over 27 hours and wind gusts of 139km/h at Cape Reinga.

A storm surge damaged a restaurant on Paihia's wharf and a seawall, several boats came ashore, Marsden Point was closed to all shipping and roofing iron lifted on a building in Mangawhai.

On Saturday, Auckland became the target.

Localised power outages, surface flooding and landslips occurred across New Zealand's largest city. Three boats broke from moorings and ferry services were disrupted.

One ship heading to Ports of Auckland was diverted to shelter off the Coromandel Peninsula.

Auckland Council Civil Defence controller Clive Manley says weather conditions will deteriorate and coastal erosion will be a problem from 4pm to 10pm on Saturday at Snells Beach, Waiwera, Orewa, Milford, Cheltenham and Whangateau.

High tide is expected at 8pm.

"It's best to keep away from beaches," he said.

Civil Defence is preparing to evacuate as many as 50 houses in Milford, Cheltenham, Orewa, Whangateau, and Wairewa, Radio New Zealand reports.

Jersey beaches snuffing out smoking

ASBURY PARK, N.J. -- Belmar is on its way to becoming the next Jersey Shore town to ban smoking on its beaches, but one group says the anti-smoking movement has gone so far that government is re-engineering society to eliminate smoker freedoms.

It may not be too long before the anti-smoking ban is statewide. A bill is pending in the Legislature that would stamp out smoking at all public beaches and parks in the state, in what one assemblywoman called an effort "to change the culture of the next generation."

"It's the right thing to do. It's clearly in the public interest to expand these laws," said Democratic Assemblywoman Valerie Vainieri Huttle, the primary sponsor of the bill, which is up for a vote in the Assembly next week.

At least 18 beaches in the state had banned smoking as of 2011, the latest year for which figures are available, but one group sees the prohibition as social engineering and unnecessary government intrusion on civil rights.

"They're attempting to de-normalize smoking," said Michael J. McFadden, the Mid-Atlantic regional director for Citizens Freedom Alliance, a smoker's rights group. "Now, if you want to smoke, they're going to make it so difficult for you that you have to go hide behind a dumpster."

Some smokers say they already know the feeling.

"I'll come off the beach to smoke," said Natalie Ford, 22, of Jackson. "I won't do it in people's faces. I hide it if I'm passing a baby."

Even some nonsmokers sympathize with the smokers.

"The roped-off areas on the beach are stupid," Anna Wassil, 77, of Belmar, said of the designated smoking areas currently on Belmar's beaches. "They (smokers) look so embarrassed, standing there."

McFadden, author of "Dissecting Antismokers' Brains" and "TobakkoNacht - The Antismoking Endgame," said that 20 to 30 years ago, one would be hard pressed to find people who would be bothered by a whiff of tobacco smoke outdoors.

Warning To Stay Away From Beaches

Warning to stay away from beaches as weather conditions deteriorate in Auckland

The Auckland Emergency Coordination Centre continues to monitor adverse weather conditions across Auckland.

Auckland Police are investigating a report of an 11 year-old boy possibly missing off Takapuna beach near the boat ramp.

Auckland Council Civil Defence controller Clive Manley says weather conditions are still expected to deteriorate into this evening.

The Auckland east low tide occurred at 1.32pm. Tides are now rising and swells are forecast to become very large during the afternoon.

A seven metre swell was recorded at Marsden Point this afternoon.

Clive Manley says the main concern is the potential for coastal erosion on north-eastern beaches between 4pm and 10pm.

People need to be very careful, especially later this afternoon and into the evening on or near east coast beaches in Rodney and the North Shore. It is best to keep away from beaches.

The areas likely to be affected are: At high risk of coastal erosion (ie properties that are very close to the beach may be affected): Snells Beach, Waiwera, Orewa, Milford, Cheltenham and Whangateau. At moderate risk of coastal erosion: Stanmore Bay, Big Manly, Long Bay, Waiake, Browns Bay, Murrays/Mairangi Bay, Campbells Bay, Castor Bay, Milford Beach, Takapuna Beach, Narrow Neck, Omaha, Hatfields Beach, Algies Bay and Claris.

Throughout the region, there have been localised power outages, surface flooding, landslips and trees down. Around 7000 people have been affected by power outages.

Battle of beaches could be in Parliament's hands

Opponents of a proposed marine reserve on Waiheke Island are taking their case to Parliament.

They're submitting a petition from almost 3000 people, against a reserve they say would impact on the island's northern beaches and residential areas.

But Waiheke Local Board deputy chairwoman Shirin Brown says the impact would be minimal, and shouldn't include a ban on dogs.

She reckons the reserve would be a net positive for the island.

"You still have 99.5 percent of the Gulf that is still not a marine reserve. Fishing improves near a marine reserve and I think it would be another tourist offering for Waiheke. One of many."

Ms Brown says most people agree with the reserve, but some disagree about whether it should extend to the shore.

"One approach would be to exclude that area. The issue with that is that some people feel that it would be nice to be able to take your children to a family beach that also has amazing marine life in it."

New Zealands most loved beaches announced

New Zealands most loved beaches announced

Ohope was selected as New Zealands most loved beach after claiming nearly 100,000 of the more than 600,000 votes across a list of about 200 popular beaches, which included some favourites submitted by participants as part of a social media campaign by the AA.

Whangamata Beach on the Coromandel Peninsula came in second followed by Matai Bay on the Karikari Peninsula in Northland.

AA General Manager Membership and Brand Dougal Swift says while Ohope Beach won out at the end of the four week Facebook campaign, what was clear throughout was how important sun, sand and surf is to New Zealand culture.

Kiwis are never far from the ocean and because of that we become inextricably linked to a beach, sometimes many beaches, Mr Swift says.

While our favourite beaches might change over time, most of us still have happy, crowded memories and photo collections loaded with beach cricket, swimming, barbecues and the odd skinny dip.

Mr Swift says beaches are more than just a place to go for Kiwis, they often have special meaning for a myriad of reasons.

Thats why a lot of the participants who voted for New Zealands most loved beach were so passionate in their comments. Their beach is always going to be the most loved because of its hidden value.

The Whakatane District Council will receive an official AA sign crowning Ohope as New Zealands Most Loved Beach. The remaining beaches in the top 10 will receive similar signs.

Destin beaches become breaker central (PHOTOS)

Spring break is in full swing, as beaches and roadways were packed on Monday afternoon. Colorful beach towels dotted the sand, and groups playing beach games gave a festive feel to the years first wave of spring breakers. The scene at Destins beach revealed that families outnumbered college students, but both demographics were there en masse.

Trent Cox and Ashley Mesecke walk both lines as the two are graduate students of Ole Miss, but they are vacationing with family, as part of a lifelong Destin spring tradition. The chill of the water deterred them from swimming, but the Houston natives were enjoying a leisurely game of horseshoes beside their Texan flag beach tent. When asked what essentials they bring to the beach Cox said, Paddleball and Football, and Mesecke added, A cooler and sunscreen.

Further down the beach large groups of college students were getting the party started with beer pong and a booze bat. Virginia Military Institute student Carl Ellison told The Log that most of the group had just met for the first time earlier that day.

A lot of us hitch-hiked from the airport, he said. Now were just enjoying the beach and meeting people we dont know.

One surprising common denominator between spring breakers is the comparison between Destin and Panama City. Florida State student, Jenelle Lemieux shared that in her opinion, Destin is the better place to be.

Destin is so much better than Panama City, she said. Its less wild.

Michael Gibbs of Mississippi agreed, saying Panama City seemed "trashy."

Destin is better, he said.

Two spring breakers, however, were not having an ideal day, as they were given a citation by the Okaloosa County Sheriff's Department. Patrolling the beaches in a golf cart, Officer Brian Polson explained that they are not trying to ruin vacations, but keep spring breakers safe.

Its all about safety, he said referring to an incident that left a lasting impression on him. Last year an 18 year old consumed alcohol and dove into a sand bar, and was paralyzed from the waist down.
