Bacon and dentures: Weird trash hits UK beaches

(CNN) From craggy cliffs to broad sandy beaches, Britain is rightly proud of its thousands of miles of shoreline.

But campaigners say great stretches of it are now under threat from a tide of trash thats endangering wildlife and could impact visitors.

The UKs Marine Conservation Society (MCS) has published the results of its annual big clean up, which sees hundreds of volunteers take to the countrys beaches armed with garbage bags.

The event, last September, saw more than 223,400 individual pieces of trash scooped from the shoreline the largest haul since the cleanups began 20 years ago.

Among the more bizarre items recovered were a French bulletproof vest, an unopened packet of bacon, a brass candlestick and, disturbingly, a set of dentures.

Ordinary people were seen as the biggest shoreline spoilers blamed for nearly 40% of the trash washing up or blowing onto beaches.

Commercial and recreational fishing, shipping and sewage outlets are also blamed for detritus including nets, floats, used diapers and syringes.

Disgusting tide

Lauren Eyles of MCS says the quantity of litter found was disheartening.

This is a disgusting tide of litter which is threatening the safety of beach visitors both human and animal. Its coming in from the sea, being blown from the land or simply being dumped and dropped, she said in a statement.

Head to 'Borawan' and these 5 unspoiled PH beaches

MANILA, Philippines - Mention beautiful white beaches and Boracay or Palawan come to mind. While these are indeed worth a visit, you need not go far and spend on airfare to enjoy the beauty of a white beach. For those with budget and time constraints, there are plenty of beaches and pristine at that 4 to 6 hours away from Manila.

Be prepared to let go of some comforts and go back to the basics, though. But you may find this small sacrifice worth it when you come face to face with the beauty of these unspoiled beaches.

These beach trips are likely to cost around P2,000 and below per person, assuming you are in a group of at least four people. With a few tips from travel bloggers, here are a few options:

1. Borawan, Puting Buhangin, and Dampalitan Beach, Padre Burgos, Quezon

Borawans name is a combination of Boracay and Palawan, named because of its relatively fine white sand and its rock formations reminiscent of Palawans. Its neighboring beach Puting Buhangin, of course, does have white sand and also has a cave partially submerged in water for adventurers to explore. Another nearby beach, Dampalitan, is a simple white beach where travelers on a budget usually set up camp before exploring the two other islands.

ADVENTURE CALLS. Aside from beach bumming, visiting Kwebang Lampas just beyond the shore in Puting Buhangin beach is a must. Photo by Kenneth Lagaa

Kenneth Lagaa of Mr. Bratpacker recommends beach bumming on different islands and discusses the pros and cons of setting up camp on each here.

Accomodations: While Borawan is the most popular among the islands, it is also the more expensive but with the cleanest basic toilet and bathing facilities. It has an entrance fee of P80 and a tent rental of P500. If you have your own tent, you pay P200 for pitching. It also has cottages for camping, and separate charges for bathing and use of toilet. A chartered boat round trip to Borawan costs P800.

If you opt to go to Dampalitan and Puting Buhangin, though, the boat trip costs P1800 (good for 8 people). Puting Buhangins entrance is also P80, though its tent rental is only P300-P400. Dampalitan, meanwhile, has a P20 entrance fee and a P100 charge for tent pitching. This payment is optional, though, so you can just donate the amount you can give.

Florida beaches no shell game

CAYO COSTA, Fla. -- They shuffle along the beaches, eyes cast down, as if in a trance.

Occasionally, they dig in the sand with their toes, or with specialized shovels. They, shellers combing the beaches of Floridas outer islands, are searching for treasures in the form of Augers, Angel Wings, Buttons, Ceriths or Coquinas.

Shelling is a popular activity on Sanibel, North Captiva, Cayo Costa and other Gulf Coast islands. Businesses such as Captiva Cruises offer excursions just for shelling.

Its one of the top three places in the world to go shelling, said Brian Holaway. These out islands dont have as many people that shell on the islands. This morning there were 40 people on this beach (Cayo Costa) as opposed to 4,000. Ive been doing this for 20 years, and Ive had people go out with me for 15 years, at every time of the year.

The trip to Cayo Costa, an isolated island off the southwest coast of Florida, involved a 30-minute boat ride from Captiva Island. Shellers were turned loose on the beach for several hours to hunt their treasures.

We go out to the outer islands, Cayo Costa, and we have trips to other islands, Holaway said. We go to the islands that are only accessible by boat, and to the state parks so there arent as many people there. Its a lot of the same shells, but not as many people on the beaches.

The Gulf Coast islands, with their sandy beaches and shallow flats, are natural depositories for shells.

Just because of the orientation of the islands, and its very shallow out in the Gulf of Mexico, so along the whole Gulf Coast here, Holaway said. Sanibel runs east and west so it can act as a little catch pit. The other islands are still good, but Sanibel is east and west, so it can kind of catch them differently.

Sanibel is known for its shelling, but it is also the most populated of the islands.

Shells can be found nearly anywhere on these beaches. However, not all shelling trips are created equal.
