Myrtle Beach, S.C., has an abundance of family-friendly attractions.

A beach is a beach is a beach ... for some, that is. For families, it's a combination of calm, clean water and sand, patrolled by lifeguards and complemented by nearby eats and attractions, such as boardwalks and playgrounds. The ideal beach is also located within short walking distance of accommodations; in fact, a recent Family Vacation Critic survey reveals 50 percent of families prioritize nearby hotels, rental homes and the like. Restrooms and showers add to the appeal, as well.

These beaches, scattered across the U.S. and listed in no particular order, offer all of the above and more for families:

Coronado Municipal Beach Coronado, Calif.

A Southern California staple,Coronado Municipal Beach returns to our annual list for many reasons, namely the soothing sand and surf that never feels crowded, even in the thick of summer. Plenty of lifeguards are stationed around the beach, as are hotels, which include the famousHotel Del Coronado. "Hotel Del" is an attraction in itself, too, with organized historical tours (wait until you hear about the hotel's haunted past) and several onsite eateries available to the public;Moo Time Creamery is a must for frozen treats, though picnic lunches are welcome on the beach, as are pets! You'll also find restrooms at the hotel, and showers are stationed throughout the beach. Located just outside of San Diego, Coronado puts families close to theSan Diego Zoo,Balboa Park andSeaWorld San Diego, too.

Insider tip for families: There are tide pools located at the rocky sea break by the Hotel del Coronado, ideal for young swimmers. There are also fire pits located on the northernmost stretch of sand on Coronado Beach perfect for s'mores.

M&S unveils frisbee made from beach litter

First product made from litter collected at the M&S Big Beach Clean Up

The supermarket said that the toy is made from regenerated litter such as plastic cups, fishing tackle and bottle tops.

The frisbee includes plastic collected by M&S' customers and employees at last year's 'Big Beach Clean-up' volunteer event. This is an annual event where volunteers help to clear litter from beaches and canals across the UK.

The product is on sale now at M&S.com and in six costal M&S stores - Belfast (Abbey Centre), Bexhill, Lytham St Annes, Silverlink Retail Park, Weston Super Mare and Edinburgh Kinnaird.

It costs 2.50, with 50p from each sale going directly to the Marine Conservation Society (MCS).

M&S director of Plan A Mike Barry said: "We've managed to transform waste, taking it off beaches where it threatens marine life, into a brand new product that is fun for our customers and raises money for MCS' on-going work to protect our seas.

"That's Plan A in action, a volunteer event that engages customers, saves precious raw materials and gives back to charity - all with a business case behind it."

Last April thousands of M&S customers and employees helped clean over 300km of coastline. To trial whether or not M&S could collect and make a product from the beach litter, the plastic from six (Shoeburyness, Aberdeen, Coleraine, Scarborough, Swansea Bay and Southsea) of the beaches was segregated, cleaned and reprocessed into production ready recycled plastic.

Two UK firms supported the project. Axion Polymers, a recycling specialist based in Salford, transformed the litter into product grade recycled plastic and Make a Material Difference, based in Leicester, created and manufactured the product.

This year's M&S Big Beach Clean-up will clean 140 UK beaches and canals from 24 April to 30 April. The target is to clear more than last year's collection of 30 tonnes of litter.

Beach-Goers Urged To Maintain Facilities At The Beaches

BANDAR SERI BEGAWAN: Beaches along the country have been maintained to give a great atmosphere for recreation and comfort for beach-goers especially families thronging to the shorelines during free time following recent renovation works carried out at Muara, Serasa, Berakas and Sengkarai Beaches.

More recently, Tungku Beach is being renovated and the Ministry of Development have taken the initiative to clean up the area and build basic amenities such as water supply, public toilets, a surau and notice boards.

This is done on behalf of the welfare and safety of visitors and vendors visiting or operating in the area.

However, damages to facilities (photo above) have been found in a short span of time.

The Ministry of Development urges cooperation from beach-goers and members of the public to help maintain the cleanliness of amenities and the immediate surroundings as well as not to litter.

It is hoped that Tungku Beach can become a popular spot for recreation and leisure in the country. BRUDIRECT.COM

Are Florida beaches shrinking? And is Global Warming to blame?

Story by Michael Ehrenberg / CBS 12 NEWS

We're all aware of the controversy surrounding Global Warming. Some believe in it.. others don't.

Regardless, many communities are taking action now to combat the very real possibility that their beaches may eventually disappear.

Weather records show that since 1970, average temperatures have risen anywhere from 1 to 3 degrees.

The result, melting sea ice in the Arctic, expanding ocean water and smaller beaches.

This has impacted over 1 million people. The most dire predictions show a sea level rise of over 6 feet by 2100.

One town in particular, Palm Beach, has renourished their beaches several times.

Palm Beach has always had issues with sand disappearing, mainly from storms, the Palm Beach Inlet and construction of jetties. Global Warming Sea level rise only adds to the problem. The town is ready to change the way they currently beef up their beaches.

It may come to a point in the future where the design of the beach needs to be greater than what it is today. They would build it up in a higher elevation and build it out further as well which requires more sand.

Repeatedly dumping sand. Sure it's expensive but necessary. There is no long term permanent solution right now.

Water quality at Southend beaches revealed

Water quality at Southend beaches revealed

3:00pm Sunday 20th April 2014 in News By David Trayner

SIX of Southends beaches have won the official seal of approval for their water quality.

The Marine Conservation Societys Good Beach Guide for 2014 grades Shoebury East Beach, Shoebury Common Beach, Thorpe Bay Beach, Three Shells Beach, Westcliff Beach and Chalkwell Beach as recommended.

Jubilee Beach and Bell Wharf, Leigh, are given a lesser, but still satisfactory grading confirming they are up to mandatory standards.

The guides publication will come as a boost after none of the towns beaches achieved Keep Britain Tidy Blue Flag status last May.

The Environment Agency had also warned Chalkwell and Bell Wharf could fall foul of strict new EU rules on water quality, due to come in next year.

Scott Dolling, Southend Councils acting head of economy, regeneration and tourism, said: I am very pleased all of our beaches have passed Marine Conservation Society scrutiny, with six being recommended as having excellent water quality.

Our beaches are absolutely vital to our tourism and the local economy and I hope local people and visitors will vote with their feet this spring and summer and visit our wonderful beaches and coastline.

A total of 538 out of 734 UK beaches tested last summer have recommended status in the latest guide 135 more than the previous year.

How can we clean up our beaches?

Big Conversation: How can we clean up our beaches?

12:04pm Thursday 17th April 2014 in News

During a two-daylitter-pick 40volunteers filled atleast one bin bag ofrubbish each fromSouthends beaches.

JAMES DONNELLY, 43,FROM SURFERS AGAINSTSEWAGE

Ive been volunteering toclear up my local beacheswith Surfers AgainstSewage and you wouldntbelieve how many bluecotton buds we find. Thereason theyre there isbecause people are flushingthem down the toilet andtheyre ending up in the sea.

People dont realise thatswhere they end up and Idont blame them. I think itshould say on thepackaging do not flushand people should be madeaware they shouldnt beflushing anything like that.

ROGER FISHER, 60, OWNEROF DOODAHS

Generally speaking, Cory doa good job of litter pickingand keeping the beach prettyclean as theyre out there inforce, but one of the bigissues is the general public.Weve got a good number ofbins, but people cant alwaysbe bothered to use them andjust drop stuff where theystand. Ive got a bin ten feetaway from the front door ofDoodahs and people still cantmanage to get their litter in it.We need a bit of education toencourage people to use thebins.

PETER GRUBB, 65, OWNEROF UNCLE TOMS CABIN

Theres a very simpleanswer which is for thecouncil to spend moremoney on their contractorCory. Every year they claimto do more for less, buttheres something wrongsomewhere. They used toremove washed up seaweedand tidy the beach, but nowthey dont bother. When youdont want to do something, you find an environmentalregulation so you dont haveto do it. Seaweed is natural, but when it has tamponsand plastic straws in it, itsanother matter.
