Vandenberg Air Force officials have closed three beaches after a surfer was attacked by a great white shark Thursday evening.
The surfer suffered non-life threatening injuries to his knee, as well as cuts to other parts of his body, in the attack, which occurred about 5:30 p.m. a quarter-mile north of Wall Beach, officials said.
Ralph Collier, president of the Shark Research Institute, said the shark was 8 to 10 feet long.
The confirmed attack prompted Vandenberg Air Force Base to close Surf, Wall and Minuteman beaches for 72 hours. The order will be lifted at 4 p.m. Sunday, according to a statement from the base, which is north of Lompoc in Santa Barbara County.
Officials at the base asked the public to avoid the beaches "due to safety considerations."
Collier said he plans to examine the surfer's surfboard, which was scraped, to get more information about the shark in the attack.
With more beachgoers heading to the shore and a main food source -- seals and sea lions -- on the upswing in California, the chances of a shark encounter have jumped, he said.
"I am surprised we don't have more events like this," Collier said.
Still, shark attacks remain extremely rare: Someone is more likely to die by being struck by a falling coconut than being attacked by a shark, Collier said.
Officials have logged 50 to 100 shark attacks per year worldwide since record-keeping began, he said. Of those attacks, only eight to 12 have been fatal.

The Jewish Women's Foundation of the Greater Palm Beaches is poised to become the first of 24 national Jewish women's funds affiliated with a local Jewish Federation to establish itself as an autonomous organization, a spokesperson for the philanthropic organization said.
"Twelve years ago, an insightful and committed group of forward thinking Jewish women came together to implement a new philanthropic model for affecting social change to support women and girls in our community and around the world," Tami Baldinger, chief executive officer of JWF of the Greater Palm Beaches said.
"Our local Jewish Federation saw the potential, supporting and nurturing our foundation to the point that our trustees felt ready to launch it as an independent entity," she noted.
Thanks to major donations, including a $1 million gift from a single donor, the trustees decided that independence would enable the foundation to deepen its impact, tell its story more broadly, and bring more women into its widening circle.
The Jewish Women's Foundation has awarded more than $1.5 million in grants to organizations in the U.S., Israel, and around the world that empower women and girls to achieve social and economic equality. In the coming year, the foundation plans to make at least $200,000 in additional grants, using social change philanthropy, advocacy, and education to ensure that women and girls can reach their fullest potential.
As an independent organization, JWF will be able to execute its social change vision and go beyond the limits of the federation's mission of direct service.
"Today, the Jewish Women's Foundation of the Greater Palm Beaches is bigger and stronger than ever," Jewish Women's Foundation President Paula Lustbader said. "Our trustees are stepping up at this exciting time in our organization's history, and putting our professional and financial resources to work advancing our aim of creating a more just society for all by promoting the rights of women and girls."
The Jewish Women's Foundation of the Greater Palm Beaches was founded in 2002 by a group of "visionary women" committed to work together to implement the Jewish value of tikkun olam, repairing the world, by empowering women and girls to achieve social and economic equality.
Since its inception as a "giving circle" where each member makes a $10,000 financial commitment payable over five years, the JWF has grown into a robust philanthropic organization, and has awarded more than $1.5 million in grants to organizations in the U.S., Israel, and around the world.
"Just as JWF strives to elevate the status of women and girls through our grants, education and advocacy, the leadership of JWF has empowered themselves to take control of our future as an organization and to truly be that vital voice for women in our community and beyond," Baldinger said.

Pumping raw sewerage into the ocean was a source of elevated levels E. coli bacteria that closed Darwin's beaches four years ago, a university study has found.
The sewerage outfall known locally as the "poo shooter" at Larrakeyah beach, about 2 kilometres from Darwin's centre, pumped raw sewerage into the ocean for 47 years.
It was pumping about 1.5 billion litres of sewerage a year before it was closed in 2011.
Charles Darwin University professor Karen Gibb led a team of researches gathering and studying water samples from across Darwin.
The team established a link between the sewerage outflow and elevated levels of E. coli at Doctors Gully and Lameroo beaches in the 2010 dry season. That year Darwin was forced to close all its beaches because of the toxic bacteria.
But she said questions still remained about what caused E. coli levels at other beaches to soar.
"In our environment where we have a lot of animals, a lot of things happening, lot of movement of tides and sediment there'll be a huge amount of E. coli in the system anyway," she said.
"We should actually be looking at a whole range of other indicators including pathogens to really get a good sense of risk and what actually matters to our recreational waters.
"Rapid Creek is one of several beaches were there was no single source causing the E. coli.
