BANGALORE: Beaches are some of the favorite vacation, honeymoon and adventurous destinations for people around the world. Though we know beaches to be filled with sand that is draped in gold which shimmers under the sunlight, there are strangely beautiful beaches that may just shock you when you look through them.

The beaches on this list will amaze viewers and also stir a desire to go visit them. These beaches are mouth gaping, exciting, fascinating and ones that will leave the viewers awe-struck. Dont be too surprised if some of these beaches defy logic and seem like they are from another planet.

The Starry Shores of Maldives:

This beach is located on one of the islands of Maldives is a real treat to the eyes. The shore of the beach comes to life when small creatures called bioluminescent phytoplankton come together and creates a starry blue-lit shore.

They create a natural light show along the island which is like watching the stars on the sand.

The Hidden Beach, Mexico:

A natural wonder, astonishing creation and a destination for lovers is the hidden beach or the Playa de Amor (beach of love) located in Marieta, Mexico. This beach is hidden out of sight since it is located underground and can be accessed only through being dropped from a helicopter or canoeing through a small tidal wave opening.

This beach came to be when the government of Mexico used this land as a bomb testing facility but later turned it into one of natures most beautiful sites. Today it is listed under UNESCOs world heritage sites.

Lighting storm closes beaches

The metropolitan area has been lashed by a sudden storm, with lightning, hail and rain sweeping across several suburbs.

Cottesloe and North Cottesloe beaches were closed earlier this afternoon and Scarborough and Trigg followed as the weather loomed just off the coast.

A Surf Life Saving WA spokesman said beaches were closed when lightning was within 10km of the shore.

Large hail fell in several suburbs in a reminder of the 2010 storm that caught the city by surprise.

The storm is associated with the convergence of two weather systems.

The Weather Bureau extended a severe weather warning to the Perth metropolitan area.

Weather Bureau duty forecaster Pete Clegg said pressure systems to the west and east were joining up to create unpredictable weather conditions.

Were expecting heavy rainfall leading to flash flooding with damaging winds and light hail possible for anywhere south of Gingin and north of Mandurah, he said.

Street art, not beaches, in Honolulus Kakaako

HONOLULU Honolulu is famous for golden sand beaches and big waves. But the citys warehouse district, called Kakaako, is famous for a different sort of attraction. You wont find kitschy Hawaiian souvenir shops or hordes of tourists here, but you will find a thriving urban arts scene, with colorful street murals so big they stretch across walls and sometimes entire sides of buildings.

In one mural, a skeleton with a surfboard in tow flashes the shaka, a Hawaiian hand-greeting. In another, a snarling panda ferociously snaps its jaws near a doe-eyed maiden. A third shows a banana in grass skirts dancing a hula with a talking pineapple.

Kakaako sits between Honolulus downtown and the touristy Waikiki. In ancient times, the area was home to a native Hawaiian fishing village.

In the 20th century, the area industrialized, with warehouses, auto repair shops and car dealerships. The neighborhood has declined in recent years as landowners struggled to find ways to utilize its prime real estate, smack in the middle of Honolulu.

It wasnt until 2011 that Honolulu artist Jasper Wong sought to revitalize the area with urban art. Wong created a group called POW!WOW! Hawaii with the goal of beautifying Kakaako and bringing people together through art.

Artists from around the globe participated, painting murals on walls across the decaying neighborhood.

Wong says the art represents a unique local style, mixing the elaborate urban graffiti seen in places like Brooklyn, Miami, Tokyo and London with Hawaiian cultural influences and Asian anime. Its also a far cry from the graffiti-tagging that once plagued the neighborhood.

One of the more powerful murals covers the sides of a building near a popular gym, the UFC Gym at 805 Pohukaina St. The faces of Hawaiian royalty King David Kalakaua and Queen Liliuokalani appear on the wall in a swirling mist of fantasy, history, and social commentary. It was created by native Hawaiian artists Solomon Enos and John Prime Hina along with mainland artist Gaia.

For vacationers, the neighborhoods edgy vibe and urban art offer an appealing alternative to Oahus better-known attractions sunny days at the beach or trips to historic sites like Pearl Harbor.

Teens may especially relate to the vivid anime themes, while older viewers will appreciate the areas Banksy sensibility yet all the art can be seen outside the confines of a traditional museum.

Sydney beaches safe for swimming after massive storm

Most of Sydney's beaches should again be safe for swimming this weekend after the biggest storm in years on Tuesday night sent pollution levels soaring.

As of Friday, Beachwatch was predicting pollution at seven of the 25 Sydney harbour beaches it monitors, while contamination levels were also expected to be high at 13 of the 20 southern beaches tracked, with conditions likely to improve further by Saturday.

Stuart Khan,an associate professor in the UNSW School of Civil and Environmental Engineering, said simple geography meant it was likely that ocean beaches would be the first to recover, with much higher levels of water flow to flush out the pollution than those bounded by an enclosed harbour.

Beaches near the harbour are also closer to sewage and stormwater drains, the overflowing of which is the main source of contamination for inner-harbour beaches. These sites typically become significantly dirtierafter rain.

"Those risks are real people should obey that advice not to swim in harbour pools or beaches after heavy rainfall," Dr Khan said. "It can only take between 10 and 20 millimetres [of rain]".

The city hadabout 80 millimetres ofrain in just over a day while southern suburbs were drenched in120 millimetres or more, causing minor flooding on the Cooks River flowing into Botany Bay.

Guy Klamer, a 32-year-old from Vaucluse who swims daily across a number of harbour beaches with his triathlon team the Magnesium Men, said they were mostly very clean.

"I swam at Watson's Bay after [Tuesday's] storm and it was putrid, bottles were washed up things like that," he said. "I think they're [usually] pretty clean, I can usually see to the bottom of the water, which is why I keep coming back."

12 Brevard schools named in 'closure clusters'

VIERA, Fla. -

Brevard Public Schools narrowed its focus to Merritt Island and the North and South Beaches when looking at possible schools that may close.

School district leaders presented 12 schools -- in two "closure clusters" -- at Tuesday's Brevard School Board meeting. One school in each cluster, or two schools total, may close if the half-cent sales tax fails in the November election, they said.

Officials emphasized that closures would be made for "financial necessity," not for reasons of efficiency, Local 6 News partner Florida Today reported.

"It's sad that we're back to this again," School Board member Amy Kneessy said, before pointing to what she sees as the solution: the sales tax vote, which is three weeks away.

Clusters include both a school that may close and nearby schools that may be impacted by the closure, such as a change in enrollment boundary lines. Potentially, students enrolled in a cluster school may attend a different school the following year. They are:

Merritt Island and North Beaches Cluster:

Specific schools that could close have not yet been named, although one of the schools, Sea Park Elementary, has been targeted for closure twice before, and parents have speculated it could be targeted once again.

"I think it should always be the last resort," said Liz Mikitarian, a teacher who previously campaigned for schools to stay. The district has closed four schools and repurposed them for other uses.

Four beaches re-opened for visitors in Krishna district

Four major beaches in Krishna district, which were closed for visitors since the warning of severe cyclonic storm Hudhud, were opened on Tuesday morning, allowing visitors close to the sea water. Bathing was restricted at the four beaches viz. Manginapudi, Pedapatnam and Peda Gollapalem under Bandar police limits and Hamsaladeevi beach under Avanigadda police limits.

Five days after the cyclone and unsafe weather conditions prevailed on the beaches, we have decided to reopen the beaches from Tuesday morning with precautionary measures, Bandar Deputy Superintendent of Police K. Srinivasa Rao told The Hindu.

We have information that the sea condition had turned safe at the beaches and hence visitors are being allowed close to the sea, he added. Huge crowd of visitors from across the district were expected to throng Manginapudi and Hamsaladeevi beaches to have a glimpse of sea condition after the cyclone weakens on the coast in Andhra Pradesh.

On the other hand, staff at the special beach police post at Manginapudi beach kept an eye on the visitors, restricting them from bathing in the sea to avoid any drowning incident due to rip current effect. On Tuesday morning, enthusiastic visitors turned out to the Manginapudi beach, observing the changes on the beach, particularly erosion of the beach near boat parking point.

NJ Beaches

Of course, the most popular beaches in New Jersey are found in Ocean City, Wildwood, Atlantic City, Cape May, and Seaside Heights. These all have plenty to offer, but what about some beaches that are a bit off the beaten path?

Spring Lake, New Jersey offers a nice, quiet beach that is a relief from the crowds of other New Jersey beaches. Located in Monmouth County, this is a nice place to take the family and just enjoy the sand, sun and waves. For the angler in the family, there is certainly a fair amount of New Jersey fishing in the area as well.

Long Beach Island, or LBI, is the place that many New Jersey natives like to go to enjoy the beach. When the shore is too crowded with bennies (a term used to refer to Jersey Shore tourists), they make their way to this narrow barrier island to enjoy one of the most family-oriented beaches in New Jersey. This can be one of the friendliest places in New Jersey, as one visitor recently told me she had several great conversations on the beach with LBI locals whose families have been enjoying the area for generations. For a quieter family setting, take the time to give Long Beach Island a try. To many, it is one of the very best beaches in New Jersey.

Brigantine offers six miles of New Jersey beaches that are just minutes from Atlantic City, but usually are less busy than other nearby beaches in New Jersey. This can provide a nice retreat from the loud New Jersey resorts and casinos found in Atlantic City. Come here, enjoy the beach for an afternoon, and head back to Atlantic City to get ready for the nightlife energized from your quiet day at the beach.

Another good option for families with younger children is to try the bay beaches in New Jersey. There are many inlets, bays, and barrier islands along the Jersey shore, and bay beaches mean clamer waters, less crowds, and shallow places for the little ones to swim without getting swept off their feet by the surf. Bayville and Margate are good places to find bay beaches in New Jersey.

As modern life becomes more and more fast paced, experiencing the simple power and beauty of the sea continues to provide a much-needed break, and New Jersey beaches are a simply a great place to go.

More sea turtles come to Florida, but reasons are mysterious

This year's early count of sea turtles nesting on Florida beaches is encouraging, though there are many unknowns in the numbers.

Welcome to the mysterious world of sea turtles, which spend much of their life far from Florida's beaches encountering fishing boats, oil spills, plastic trash and any number of other perils.

Nesting by loggerhead, green and leatherback turtles has been trending up in numbers for nearly the past five years along the state's coast. But there have been significant dips and climbs in their nest counts.

Green turtles, for example, have wowed researchers with their growing preference for Florida beaches. Yet while last year's nest count was surprisingly high, this year's is down, which experts expected.

Named for the color of their fatty tissue, green turtles go about nesting in a peculiar way. Their nest counts predictably are up and down every other year.

"To me, it's one of the great enigmas in sea-turtle biology," Llewellyn Ehrhart, a pioneering turtle researcher and professor emeritus at the University of Central Florida. "It seems it would have something to do with food availability and nutrition, but I don't know of anything in ocean biology that is so regularly scheduled high, low, high, low, year in and year out."

The turtle kings of Florida's coastline, loggerheads, which have huge heads relative to their 3-foot shells, deposited eggs in 46,885 nests this year.

That count was from the state's "index" locations at 26 beaches, where nest monitoring has been done by researchers using the same methods since 1989.

Index counts are done during a 109-day window, which means tallies are smaller than annual totals, but the index data are valued for detecting trends.

"Every year, it's always a little bit of a surprise for what we get," said Anne Meylan, a senior research scientist at the Fish and Wildlife Research Institute. "The biology of the animals is really complicated, and they live a long time, and they are affected by things far away."
