KHS teacher awarded telescope

Kings High School science teacher Ashley Warren is an astronomy ambassador furthering the study of the cosmos with her students.

Warren, who has taught physics and chemistry, recently completed the Cincinnati Observatory Centers Future Galileos program, in which 100 quality telescopes and training were awarded to 100 educators in greater Cincinnati over four years.

Warren found out about the program while visiting the observatory during a stargazing event.

I had no idea the rich astronomical history Cincinnati had. At the stargazing night, observatory astronomers Dean and Leo began explaining the Future Galileos program. I immediately thought what a powerful tool this could be in my classroom, she said.

She applied for the program this past spring and was accepted to participate in training over the summer. Upon completion she was awarded an impressive telescope with a tube 5 feet long and 8 inches in diameter.

My physics students learn about mirrors and lenses, and I believed the telescope would be an amazing way to incorporate astronomy into the physics curriculum. Astronomy is an area of science that is not heavily focused on in the standards, yet I feel that students show the most interest for the universe and astronomy, she said.

Warren hopes to incorporate the telescope into AP Physics and a future astronomy class at KHS.

Warren also took two astronomy classes offered through the Cincinnati Observatory. During those classes, she learned how to use the telescope, teach astronomy concepts, understand misconceptions about astronomy content and incorporate astronomy into other content areas.

The Future Galileos program gave me an amazing resource to expand the minds of my students, Warren said. Understanding exactly how small or how large systems are is difficult for anyone to comprehend. I think the astronomers at the observatory really gave me multiple ways to teach for greater understanding. I think when we stifle the big picture questions students have about the universe we limit their learning. To incorporate more astronomy in my classroom, encourages students to think at a deeper, higher cognitive level.

Astronomy night to be held at airport

MT. VERNON The Mt. Vernon Department of Parks and Recreation will offer its annual chance to get a closer look at the stars Wednesday night.

From 6 to 8 p.m. at the Mt. Vernon Outland Airport, Rend Lake College instructor Greg Hollmann and his astronomy students will be discussing the stars and planets.

This is the fifth or sixth year for the event, said Wes Plummer, Mt. Vernon Parks recreation director.

Its a chance for people that have questions about astronomy or an interest in it to gather, he said. There will be special telescopes. The public will be able to talk to Greg Hollmann and his Introduction to Astronomy students. They will have projects on hand, and they will discuss and look at different things from the celestial world.

Hollmann said the event is very low-key.

We will be talking about general information on the night sky, he said. Well break the group up and have them rotate among stations. Ill be sharing information on constellations and mythology. We will have a 10-inch telescope to look at Jupiter and other celestial objects.

The evening is a good chance for someone with a novice interest in astronomy to ask some questions and get to use some high-powered telescopes. Both children and adults are welcome to attend.

If kids have questions, they can keep it as simple as they need to, Plummer said. Sometimes there are people who are really avid enthusiasts, and Greg can reach their level too. He has worked in an astronomy camp and done some other work out in California. He has a wealth of knowledge on the subject, and he is used to teaching children as well as adults.

If anyone is learning how to use their telescope, Plummer added, they may bring it and students or Hollmann will help them set it up.

Those who attend should dress in warm clothing. Hot chocolate and snacks will be available during the event.

Nibiru Or Trojan Asteroid Caught In Orbit With Earth? 2012 HD – Video

Nibiru Or Trojan Asteroid Caught In Orbit With Earth? 2012 HD
An asteroid is caught in a synchronized orbit with the Earth, dancing back and forth relative to our planet as both circle the sun, a team of Canadian scientists has discovered. The object, which for now is dubbed 2010 TK7, is a "Trojan" asteroid, meaning that it is held in a delicate balance between a gravitational tug from the sun and an equal tug from the Earth. It #39;s long been known that Jupiter, Neptune and Mars have Trojans orbiting alongside them, but this is the first time one has been found alongside our planet. "An image of dancers is helpful," said Paul Wiegert, a professor of physics and astronomy at the University of Western Ontario and an author of the study, published online Wednesday in the journal, Nature. "The Earth goes around the sun in a circle, and the asteroid dances in front of it, getting closer and farther away as it orbits." TK7 is about 90 degrees from the Earth right now, and its distance from Earth ranges from 49.7 million miles to 12.4 million miles. The composition and surface characteristics of TK7 are unclear, though it is believed to be several hundred feet in diameter -- "on the largish side" for a near-Earth asteroid, Wiegert said. Because it typically remains on the sunward side of the Earth, venturing only occasionally into the night sky, it has been difficult to detect until now. Trojan asteroids commonly dwell on the daylight sides of their planet. And its existence indicates that there are probably others, even less accessible by ...From:UniverseExplorersTVViews:29 3ratingsTime:04:31More inScience Technology

Absolute Equatorial Coordinates english version – Video

Absolute Equatorial Coordinates english version
Video explanation of the realization of coordinate measurements in astronomy. Thanks to Heraldo Soares de Oliveira (Brazil) for their help in translating subtitles in Portuguese. For comments and suggestions (errors in the translation of subtitles, for example), type your comments on this page. Thank you. http://www.pawean.com The coordinates measured from the plane of Equator, are called Absolute Equatorial coordinates. The reference plane is the plane of Equator and the starting point or reference to start measuring is the Aries point or Vernal point. Aries point is the position of the center of the sun when it passes through Equator, ie when its declination is 0, and it changes from negative to positive. This position is given on March 21, the day of early spring. We know that the sun crosses the ecliptic circle apparent for a year. The March 21 crosses the Equator from a negative declination to a positive declination, ie passes the southern hemisphere to the northern hemisphere. It is the spring equinox. On September 23 the route is reversed, the declination goes north to south. It is the autumn equinox. These days are called equinoxes because the nights are the same length as the day. Aries point is taken as a starting point, but not fixed, because it moves slowly because it will affect two movements: the precession of the equinoxes, very slow and the nutation of a regular basis. Aries Point 2000 years ago coincided with the position of the Sun in the constellation Aries ...From:Antonio Gonzlez EstvezViews:0 0ratingsTime:08:37More inScience Technology
