New Dean of Science has high hopes for his faculty

Selena Phillips-Boyle

CHECKMATE The man who solved checkers is setting his sights on the Faculty of Science

Artificial intelligence has been the focus of Jonathan Schaeffers research during his past 28 years at the University of Alberta, but his new role as Dean of Science will rely solely on his own intelligence.

The Board of Governors appointed Schaeffer to the position last week, which will commence July 1 for a five-year term.

Schaeffer succeeds Gregory Taylor, who had held the position since 2003. The incoming dean has been heavily involved in the Department of Computing Science, where he has served as both professor and chair of the department. For the past four years, he has also held the positions of Vice-Provost and Associate Vice-President (Information Technology) at the U of A.

Schaeffer said he developed a strong appreciation for the Faculty of Science as a whole during his term as the Chair of Computing Science in 2005. When he became a part of the annual faculty evaluation process, he was able to see more of the work being done by a variety of scientists, ranging from physicists to psychologists.

You just started reading their annual reports and went, Wow, look what this guy is doing, and My god, this guy if he does that, he could change the world, Schaeffer said.

It was all just really exciting and it made me appreciate what a fabulous faculty we have here in sciences.

His own research in the area of computer science has earned him international recognition, as well as numerous awards.

One accomplishment that broke the Guinness Book of World Records was Chinook: first computer to win a game of checkers in a human world championship.

Exetel taps artificial intelligence

Internet service provider Exetel has unveiled a new customer support system that uses artificial intelligence to solve user connection and other support issues online.

The Calliope system, developed by Exetel and the Sri Lanka Institute of Information Technology, is the result of an eight-year bid to bake intelligence into the ISP's customer management systems.

The new system was developed over the past two years at the institute, and aims to respond to simple questions that would otherwise be fielded by call centre staff.

Exetel CEO Steve Waddington told Sri Lankan media last week that by automatically answering common user issues online - often by pointing them to a centralised wiki of support information - the new system freed up support engineers' time and reduced the company's support costs.

Waddington drew parallels between the system and the 'Siri' feature on Apple iPhones, which translated user requests in natural language - as opposed to set commands - to deliver answers from a variety of sources.

"Siri is exactly the sort of intelligent agent that Calliope is on a commercial basis. You could say Siri is to Calliope what a spreadsheet is to Oracle database," he said.

Despite the use of natural language, the Calliope system requires users to enter short, clear sentences with readily recognisable phrases such as "drop outs", "no sync" or product names in order to receive support.

The AI system did not replace the call centre for complex user support issues, Waddington said, but removes the need for call centre staff to deal with simple questions often repeated through users.

"Eight years ago we conceived of Calliope as a method to make us a more efficient company, and make the information our customers wanted more available to them," he said.

"Our own development stalled in its second year. We had simply reached the limit of the resources a small company like us could commit to such a project. And the concept languished for a few years."

Rumour: Facebook looking to acquire Opera Linked by Thom Holwerda on 05/25/12 19:09 UTC Pocket-lint has a rumour up that Facebook is interested in acquiring Opera to kickstart their own move into the browser market, to compete with Mozilla, Google, and Microsoft. While it would mean much-deserved recognition for Opera, I actually hope such a deal does not go through - for entirely selfish reasons. 3Read More 64 Comment(s) Google details copyright removals in search Linked by Thom Holwerda on 05/24/12 22:34 UTC Google has released a treasure trove of data about takedown requests regarding possible copyright violations. What may surprise some - but is actually kind of logical if you think about it - is that most requests, by far, come from Microsoft. You'll be surprised about the total amount of requests, and looking at some of them in more detail, it becomes obvious just how much certain organisations would abuse takedown power if they had it. 8Read More 12 Comment(s) Google CEO Larry Page on Charlie Rose Linked by Thom Holwerda on 05/23/12 16:13 UTC Google CEO Larry Page was interviewed on Charlie Rose recently, and there was certainly some interesting stuff in there. Sadly, the interview suffers from the curse of modern journalism in that it was all a bit timid and civil (no truly harsh and confronting questions), but despite that, it's still a good watch. Two quotes from Page really stood out to me. 3Read More 39 Comment(s) Visual Studio 11 Express editions Metro-only Linked by Thom Holwerda on 05/21/12 20:03 UTC For Microsoft, the traditional desktop is old news. It's on its way out, it's legacy, and the harder they claim the desktop has equal rights, the sillier it becomes. With companies, words are meaningless, it's actions that matter, and here Microsoft's actions tell the real story. The company has announced the product line-up for Visual Studio 11, and the free Express can no longer be used to create desktop applications. Message is clear. 5Read More 158 Comment(s) Smartphones Reignite the OS Wars Linked by Howard Fosdick on 05/19/12 8:59 UTC Smartphones have become the preferred computer of the masses. Sales surpassed those of personal computers in 2010, having grown over 50% per year for several years. Nearly 500 million smartphones shipped in 2011. This radically shifts the terrain in the consumer operating system competition that was, for years, firmly decided in favor of Windows. Terry Gou, chairman of Foxconn, has confirmed his company will be building a television for Apple in conjunction with Sharp. Microsoft's next big operating system release restricts access to certain APIs and technologies browsers need - only making them available to Internet Explorer. UHV assistant professors receive $10,000 summer research grants

Originally published May 26, 2012 at 4:42 p.m., updated May 26, 2012 at 4:42 p.m.

Junior faculty summer grants awarded to two University of Houston-Victoria assistant professors will be used to study artificial intelligence and publishing.

Hongyu Guo, an assistant professor of computer science, and Kyle Schlesinger, co-director of the Master of Science in publishing program and an assistant professor of English and communication design, each received a $10,000 research award from the university.

Guo will continue his research in swarm intelligence, while Schlesinger will work on essays about the history and future of publishing. Both could have books out about the subjects in the near future.

The grants have been awarded each of the past four summers. A committee of tenured UHV professors evaluates and then recommends who receives the awards.

"These grants were created to encourage faculty research and give our junior faculty a jump-start in their research agendas," said Jeffrey Cass, UHV provost and vice president for academic affairs. "Dr. Guo and Dr. Schlesinger presented compelling research plans, and we are pleased to assist them with their efforts."

Guo's research involves an emerging subfield of artificial intelligence inspired by the swarming behaviors of social animals.

"Ants, bees and gnats often swarm together," he said. "As individuals, they are simple. But as a group, the collective intelligence of the system of individual agents makes it possible to accomplish high-complexity tasks. It's the same principle here."

Guo said swarm intelligence is a fairly new field but has profound applications in nanotechnology, computer networks, digital gaming, space science, military and business operations.

"There's relatively little research done so far on the topic, and there are many open questions," he said.

Artificial Intelligence: What happened to the hunt for thinking machines?

May 25, 2012, 4:48 AM PDT

Takeaway: Mankind has long been fascinated by the idea of intelligent machines, but in the information age the sci-fi dream of creating a human-like AI appears increasingly anachronistic.

The idea of creating a sentient machine has fascinated mankind for centuries. And while sci-fi offers artificial intelligences that rival our own, the fiction bears little resemblance to real world AI.

AI is all around us, not as a synthetic overlord, but as specialised software that help fly planes and run factory production lines. For many, the idea of creating thinking machines has become a distant dream.

However, not everyone has given up on the idea of creating a machine that can think like a man. Inventor Hugh Loebner is at the forefront of the hunt: each year for more than two decades Loebner has run a competition based on the Turing Test, the game devised by British mathematician and father of computing Alan Turing in 1950 to identify a thinking machine.

In the Loebner Prize competition, software known as chatbots conduct instant messenger or verbal conversations with human judges, attempting to fool them into believing they are a real person.

Any bot that fools half the judges can win up to $100,000 for its creator, and each year there is a $2,000 prize for bot deemed to be most human-like.

Turing predicted that a machine able to fool people into thinking it was human in one third of conversations would exist by 2000.

And yet so far the performance of the chatbots has been underwhelming: after 22 years of contests no bot has come close to fooling half of the judges into thinking it is human. Bots make convincing humans during short chats, but their credibility breaks down in a prolonged conversation.

Even Loebner, for all of the time and effort he has invested, says he has little passion for event, and continues to run it largely out of a sense of obligation.

Bluesky Launches Drones for Aerial Surveying

COALVILLE, England, May 23, 2012 /PRNewswire/ --

Aerial survey company Bluesky has launched a fast response aerial survey service using state of the art unmanned aerial vehicles (UAV) or drones. The technology, originally developed by the military, includes Artificial Intelligence (AI) guided autopilot, high resolution integrated camera and environmentally friendly rechargeable propulsion system. Autonomous take-off and landing ensures the system is easy to use and with a wingspan of less than a metre it can be easily transported without the need for complex assembly.

"Using UAV's we can respond quickly to demands to collect site specific images and data in a very cost effective way," commented James Eddy, Technical Director at Leicestershire based Bluesky. "The integrated camera captures high resolution photogrammetric images that can be used to create map accurate aerial survey data including height models. The system is compact and lightweight making it easy to store and transport and can be launched by hand from virtually any location. Flight planning software and an Artificial Intelligence guided autopilot make it easy to control and the system will gently and safely return to the ground with a single touch of a button."

Potential applications of Bluesky's UAV solution include open cast mines or quarries or even landfill sites where large volumes of material are extracted or moved on a regular basis. The geographically accurate imagery would provide a record of activity at a given point in time and the highly detailed height models could be used to measure stockpiles, cut and fill volumes and for facilities management and safety monitoring.

Large scale construction sites can also be surveyed, at regular intervals or predetermined points in time, providing data for project management, reporting and funding. The height data can be used for line of site calculations to ensure compliance with planning applications or cut and fill calculations for project invoicing and for the creation of realistic 3D images for marketing or KPI reporting.

With an option of additional sensors mounted on the UAV Bluesky is also exploring agricultural applications monitoring crop growth or irrigation and identifying locations for higher value crops or high yield areas. Additional applications include golf courses where the map accurate images and height models could be used to create yardage books, feed digital caddy systems and used to develop stroke manager solutions.
