A centre for 'terminator studies', where leading academics will study the threat that robots pose to humanity, is set to open at Cambridge University.

Its purpose will be to study the four greatest threats to the human species - artificial intelligence, climate change, nuclear war and rogue biotechnology.

The Centre for the Study of Existential Risk (CSER) will be co-launched by Lord Rees, the astronomer royal and one of the world's top cosmologists.

Rees's 2003 book Our Final Century had warned that the destructiveness of humanity meant that the species could wipe itself out by 2100.

The idea that machines might one day take over humanity has featured in many science fiction books and films, including the Terminator, in which Arnold Schwarzenegger stars as a homicidal robot.

In 1965, Irving John Jack Good and wrote a paper for New Scientist called Speculations concerning the first ultra-intelligent machine.

Cambridge University to open 'Terminator centre' to study threat to humans from artificial intelligence

Will artificial intelligence be the end of us?

LONDON Could computers become cleverer than humans and take over the world? Or is that just the stuff of science fiction?

Philosophers and scientists at Britain's Cambridge University think the question deserves serious study. A proposed Center for the Study of Existential Risk will bring together experts to consider the ways in which super intelligent technology, including artificial intelligence, could "threaten our own existence," the institution said Sunday.

"In the case of artificial intelligence, it seems a reasonable prediction that some time in this or the next century intelligence will escape from the constraints of biology," Cambridge philosophy professor Huw Price said.

When that happens, "we're no longer the smartest things around," he said, and will risk being at the mercy of "machines that are not malicious, but machines whose interests don't include us."

Fears that machines could overtake humans have long been the subject of science fiction the computer HAL in the movie "2001: A Space Odyssey," for example, is one of film's best-known computer threats.

Price acknowledged that many people believe his concerns are far-fetched, but insisted the potential risks are too serious to brush away.

"It tends to be regarded as a flakey concern, but given that we don't know how serious the risks are, that we don't know the time scale, dismissing the concerns is dangerous. What we're trying to do is to push it forward in the respectable scientific community," he said.

While Price said the exact nature of the risks is difficult to predict, he said that advanced technology could be a threat when computers start to direct resources towards their own goals, at the expense of human concerns like environmental sustainability.

He compared the risk to the way humans have threatened the survival of other animals by spreading across the planet and using up natural resources that other animals depend upon.

Price is co-founding the project together with Cambridge professor of cosmology and astrophysics Martin Rees and Jann Tallinn, one of the founders of the internet phone service Skype.

Will artificial intelligence be the end of us?

Is artificial intelligence a threat to humanity?

By Dan Satherley

In the year 2029, humanity is almost completely obliterated, and the survivors of a nuclear holocaust are at war with an artificial intelligence network and its army of cyborg killing machines.

That's the premise for the fictional movie Terminator, but could it become a reality? That's what academics at Cambridge University want to find out.

"It seems a reasonable prediction that some time in this or the next century intelligence will escape from the constraints of biology," says Cambridge philosophy professor Huw Price.

To prepare for this, the university is setting up a Centre for the Study of Existential Risk, which will look into the "four greatest threats" to humanity, reports the Huffington Post: artificial intelligence, climate change, nuclear war and rogue biotechnology.

It hopes to bring together philosophers, astronomers, biologists, neuroscientists and economics experts to look into scenarios which could end the human race.

"It tends to be regarded as a flakey concern, but given that we don't know how serious the risks are, that we don't know the time scale, dismissing the concerns is dangerous," says Prof Price.

"What we're trying to do is to push it forward in the respectable scientific community."

He says humans' spread across the globe has been a disaster for many other species, and the same thing could happen to us in the next century, if computers somehow become self-aware, and start directing resources for their own benefit.

British astronomer royal Lord Martin Rees and Skype founder Jann Tallinn are also involved in the new centre, which aims to launch next year.

David Buckley
PhD student David Buckley on "Adapting Video Games to Players": Over the past couple of decades, video games have seen improvements in their visuals, gameplay and Artificial Intelligence. However, games are still unable to distinguish between players, behaving in exactly the same way for each user, despite their differing styles of play. One area of Machine Learning explores how existing techniques can be used to detect these differences in order to adapt video games around their players.From:UoMCompsciViews:1 0ratingsTime:24:48More inEducation
